Welcome Program Directors, Chairs, Coordinators and Academicians,

I am very happy to see all of you in Las Vegas for the 4th Annual SAU Program Directors, Coordinators & Academicians Meeting. As in years past I anticipate a lively and informative educational gathering. Each year our attendance has increased owing to the success of each previous year. This Annual Meeting serves as a forum to address the complexities of residency training, educating the educators on state-of-the-art thinking and providing a forum for us, the experts in our field, to formulate solutions that address the unique pressures of academic practice. The SAU’s mission is to uphold and evangelize the ideology of academic urology: fostering values leading to best patient care. Our organization is comprised of all the academic teaching programs

across the United States who are responsible for educating trainees as well as practicing urologists with the most up to date information and surgical techniques. Importantly, our constituents are the engine of advancing knowledge in our field.

I want to give my deepest thanks to Dr. Joseph Basler (Program Director, UT San Antonio) and Dr. Leonard Gomella (Chairperson, Thomas Jefferson University) for constructing this year’s program. They have constructed an incredibly robust interactive curriculum that will educate, entertain and move our mission forward. The program includes important updates from sibling organizations including the ABU, AUA, RRC, and ACURe. I want to express my gratitude to Heather Swanson and Monica Bertz of WJ Weiser & Associates whose work and logistical magic made this meeting a reality.

A crucial part of our meeting involves workshops where all our members weigh in on policies that effect future practice. This year’s topics focus on methods to increase medical student interest in urology, encourage practice in rural America, developing universal resident assessment tools, and creating tools to obtain objective information regarding resident candidates. Note that topics for the workshops at the 2021 Annual Meeting will be solicited from the general membership. Opportunities to serve on committees and workshop panels will also be made available.

With the corporatization of university medicine, the importance of the SAU in expounding the ideals of urological academicians is more important than ever. Academic institutions are the stewards of education that forge the metal of our practitioners and the generator for research that defines best practice. I am grateful to all our participants who dedicate their experience, time and values to create the fabric of our organization. Through your efforts, the SAU will continue to minister and promote collaborative best practices that will impact the future generations of urologists.

I look forward to a successful meeting and spending time with all my colleagues.

Educational Needs Urological education continues to evolve and, as such, continuing education is required for program directors and program administrators. Since 2011, the Next Accreditation System (NAS) has managed to introduce several new requirements, such as the common core requirements as well as a possible restructuring of the intern year for incoming urology trainees. Most program directors and coordinators are unfamiliar with these developments and will need help in understanding and modifying the structure of their residency training programs.

The development, evaluation, and assessment processes for resident training in urology requires continuous learning and involves a team approach, including faculty, residents and fellows, other healthcare colleagues, and administrators. Program directors and program coordinators are not only responsible for teaching these stakeholders, but they need to be updated on the relevant material for improving their programs. The SAU Program Directors, Coordinators & Academicians Meeting is a forum for networking and sharing best national practices. Each member of the team needs to be a “learner” in these evolving processes and to understand the concepts behind and discover practical and thoughtful tools to develop a dynamic program for their trainees approach. Program administrators are essential to understanding the concepts and assist in implementing the new policies and concepts. Collaborative discussion among the attendees will foster an understanding how to develop an individualized approach to the implementation of best practices and flexibility for future advancements.

Educational Objectives At the conclusion of the 2020 SAU Program Directors, Coordinators & Academicians Meeting, attendees will be able to:

1. Identify the current and future changes to the Urology Milestones as described by the Urology RRC.

2. Further discuss the future of urology educational curriculum as well as new educational tools that can be employed to improve the feedback & evaluation process and refine urology residency education.

3. Explain new approaches to residency assessment including available tools.

4. Identify the challenges that have been encountered with the the PGY-1 curriculum and its implementation since urology residencies transitioned to controling PGY1 residents.

5. Analyze and describe the strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities for improving residency training in the United States.

6. Discuss the challenges of getting urologists to practice in rural areas.

7. Develop awareness of the need for medical school level training in urology and how to develop urology curricula at that level.

8. Recognize the challenges of bias and harassment in the training environment.

9. Discuss how to develop a culture of patient safety and quality improvement in residency training.

10. Identify the need for and development of Urologic ultrasound training in residency.

11. Discuss the big picture of funding of training programs including salary support through the school and departmental fiscal commitment.

Humphrey O. Atiemo, MDHumphrey O. Atiemo, MD is a urologist at the Vattikuti Urology Institute, Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He has been in clinical practice for over 10 years with specialty certification in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland as a Benjamin Bannekar Scholar and competed as a wrestling student athlete. After graduating with distinction as an ACC scholar athlete, he matriculated to the University of Maryland for Medical School and Urology Residency. This was followed by fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic. He currently serves as the Urology Residency Program Director and strives to train the future leaders in Urology.

Timothy D. Averch, MD, FACSDr. Averch graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and went on to complete his urology training at New York Medical College. Following his residency, he completed a fellowship in Endourology at Johns Hopkins Hospitals. Dr. Averch was faculty as the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Department of Urology for 18 years ago but recently transitioned to the Chief of the Division of Urology at Palmetto Health - University of South Carolina Medical Group. He is certified by the American Board of Urology.

Gina M. Badalato, MDDr. Badalato is an Assistant Professor in Urology and Director of Medical Student Education as well as the Associate Program Director at Columbia University Medical Center.

Joseph W. Basler, MD, PhDDr. Joseph Basler, MD, PhD is currently Professor and Urology Program Director at UT Medicine (UTHSCSA) in San Antonio. He serves as attending physician at the University Hospital and the Santa Rosa Medical Center Hospital. He received his PhD in Molecular Biology from the State University of New York in Buffalo in 1983 and MD from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1984. Urology residency was completed at Washington University in St. Louis, MO in 1990. He has served on the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis from 1990 -1998 as Assistant Professor of Urologic Surgery. After moving to San Antonio, Texas in 1998, he has served as Associate and Full Professor. He became Program Director in 2006. Academic interests include teaching surgical skills, Urologic Oncology and Endourology.

Timothy C. Brand, MDCol. Timothy C. Brand, MD, MS, FACS is the Director of the Urology Residency at Madigan Army Medical Center and the Urology Consultant to the US Army Surgeon General. He currently manages a busy surgical practice, specializing in robotic assisted surgery for urologic malignancies. Education and research are his priority. He was president of the Biomedical Engineering Honor Society at Tulane University, where he received his Engineering degree. Additionally he completed a Master’s of Science in Clinical Investigation, and has used this expertise to fuel a career in robotic surgery, resident education, and research. Dr. Brand has received numerous honors, including Board Certification in Urology, Society of Urologic Oncology Membership, admission to the American College of Surgeons, a Meritorious Service Medal for the education of Army surgeons on the robotic surgical platform, and several award winning research presentations. His current research includes looking at standardizing curricula and certification for robotic assisted surgery, surgical simulation, and assessing how oncologic outcomes after intervention for urologic malignancies are affected by preoperative clinical characteristics.

Elisa K. Brantly, MDDr. Brantly completed her urology training at the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio, graduating in 2011.. Immediately afterwards, Dr. Brantly began working as a general urologist in San Angelo, TX. She is currently employed by Shannon Clinic with two other partners.

Timothy P. Brigham, MDiv, PhDTimothy P. Brigham, MDiv, PhD, is the Chief of Staff and Senior Vice-President, Department of Education at the ACGME. Dr. Brigham’s responsibilities, as head of the Department of Education, include the ACGME’s Annual Educational Conference and the development of new educational programs for the ACGME.

Dr. Brigham holds a PhD in psychological studies in education from Temple University, a master’s degree in counseling and human relations from Villanova University, and a master’s of divinity from Palmer Theological Seminary.

Gary W. Chien, MDGary W. Chien, MD is the Program Director of Urology Residency at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center. He attended UC Berkely undergraduate, SUNY Downstate Medical School, urology residency at LAMC, and Fellowship in Robotics and Endourology at the University of Chicago. Dr. Chien has been on the faculty of the Urology Residency Program at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles since 2004. He is also the Vice Area Research Chair at his medical center, Chair of the Annual Kaiser Permanente Urology Symposium since 2010, Associate Editor of The Permanente Journal, Program Planning Committee Member of the American Urological Association, Western Section 2019-2021, and the current Treasurer of the Los Angeles Urological Association. Dr. Chien is passionate about urological upper tract oncology, robotic surgery, and urological education.

Peter E. Clark, MDDr. Clark received his undergraduate degree in Biology from Cornell University and went on to complete his medical degree at Harvard Medical School. He completed his urologic residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and subsequently did his urologic oncology fellowship training at the University of Southern California. He is currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology at Atrium Health and Chair of Urologic Oncology at the Levine Cancer Institute in Charlotte NC, having moved from Vanderbilt University where he was also the Residency Program Director. Dr. Clark has an active clinical practice focused primarily on bladder and kidney cancer as well as an active interest in the basic sciences, particularly the role of MAPK’s and canonical Wnt signaling on kidney and bladder oncogenesis. He is serving as the representative for the Southeast Section of the AUA to the Research, Education, and Communication Committee, the Judicial and Ethics Committee, the Practice Guidelines Committee (which he currently Chairs) and is on the editorial boards for the Journal of Urology, BJUI, Urologic Oncology, and UROLOGY. Until very recently he served on the Examination Committee for the American Board of Urology. He is also an active member of the Society of Urologic Oncology (where he was past chair of the Fellowship Committee), The Society of Academic Urologists, and the Society of Basic Urologic Research. He has served as Chair of the Bladder/Penile cancer guidelines panel for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) in the past and was a member of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer and small renal mass guidelines panels for the American Urologic Association (AUA). He has over 190 publications in both the clinical and basic sciences.

Michael Coburn, MD, FACSDr. Coburn is Professor and Chairman of the Scott Department of Urology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He is a graduate of Cornell University, and obtained his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine in 1982. He completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine, and then pursued fellowship training also at Baylor as an American Foundation for Urologic Disease Scholar.

Dr. Coburn served as Chief of Urology at Ben Taub Hospital from 1990 until 2012, focusing his clinical and research interests in the areas of urologic trauma, genital and urethral reconstructive surgery, and sexual and reproductive dysfunction.

Dr. Coburn serves as the Urology representative on the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, where he also Chairs the Advocacy Pillar and is a member of the COT Executive Committee. He is Past President of the Society of Genito-Urinary Reconstructive Surgeons, and is a former Chair of the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Urology.

Dr. Coburn is the recipient of many awards for his educational and clinical work, including the Robertson Presidential Educator Award for lifetime achievement in educational leadership at Baylor College of Medicine.

Ali A. Dabaja, MDDr. Dabaja completed medical school at Wayne State University, MI, and did his residency training at Henry Ford Hospital, Urology, MI, in 2012. Dr. Dabaja completed his fellowship at Weill Cornell Medical College in Male Reproductive Medicine. Currently, he is the Director of Male Reproductive Medicine and Sexual Medicine, and the Associate Program Director of the Residency Program at Henry Ford Health System in the Department of Urology.

Scott E. Delacroix Jr., MDDr. Delacroix is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urology at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine. He serves as the Program Director for the LSU New Orleans Urology Residency Program and the Director of Urologic Oncology. He is an active researcher through the Gulf South NCORP, SWOG PI, holds a directorship in the Stanley Scott Cancer Center, and is a member of the NCI GU Steering Committee.

Laura Edgar, EdD, CAEDr. Edgar is the Vice President for Milestone Development. She previously served as the Executive Director for Milestones Development and the Review Committees for Medical Genetics and Genomics, Pathology, and Radiation Oncology. In her current role, she leads volunteers and staff members through the development of Milestones and related materials. She has been influential in the development of Milestones for more than one hundred specialties. Dr. Edgar is a frequent speaker on topics related to the Milestones, Clinical Competency Committees, assessment, education, and accreditation.

Prior to joining the ACGME, Dr. Edgar worked in a clinical laboratory for 10 years, and then moved on to direct certification, education, and accreditation programs for various domestic and international medical and scientific organizations. Dr. Edgar earned her doctorate in organizational leadership after obtaining a baccalaureate degree in medical laboratory sciences and a master’s in business administration. She is a certified medical technologist and a certified association executive.

Bradley A. Erickson, MD, MS, FACSDr. Erickson is an Associate Professor at the University of Iowa and the Chief of Urology at the Iowa City Veterans Administration Hospital. He received his MD at the University of Iowa, a surgery/urology residency at Northwestern University and a fellowship in Genitourinary Trauma and Reconstruction at the University of California-San Francisco. He earned a Master’s of Science in Health Services Research at the University of Iowa in 2012.

Dr. Erickson’s clinical interests include functional urology (stricture disease, pelvic radiation disease, neurogenic bladder, lower urinary tract dysfunction) and transitional care. His research interests mirror his clinical interests, specifically in the domains of surgical outcomes and health services.

Dr. Erickson is a founding member of the Trauma and Urinary Reconstructive Network of Surgeons (TURNS) and currently (2019) serves as its President. Dr. Erickson is an active member of the urologic surgery outcomes research group at the University of Iowa and he is currently a PI on an R21 NIH grant evaluating the role of inflammation in urethral stricture disease, and a co-investigator in two large National Institutes of Health collaborative studies: the Multiinstitutional Approach to Pelvic Pain (MAPP) and the Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction Research Network (LURN).

Leonard G. Gomella, MD, FACSDr. Leonard Gomella is the Bernard W. Godwin, Jr. Professor of Prostate Cancer and Chairman of the Department of Urology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College. Originally from New York, Dr. Gomella completed medical school, general surgery and urology training at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. After a Urologic Oncology Fellowship in the Surgery Branch of the NCI in Bethesda, Maryland, he joined the Jefferson faculty in 1988 and was appointed Chair in 2002. He serves as Senior Director for Clinical Affairs for the Sidney Kimmel Cancer at Jefferson, and Urology Chair for RTOG (now NRG). From 2008 until 2019 he was Clinical Director of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center Network.

Dr. Gomella is involved in translational basic science and clinical research developing new diagnostic tests and treatments for prostate, bladder and kidney cancer through the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center where he serves as the Co-Leader of the Biology of Prostate Cancer Program. Dr. Gomella's team was first to use molecular techniques (RT-PCR) to detect circulating prostate cancer micrometastasis (now called “circulating tumor cells”), a discovery that led to a new field of investigation in this disease. Dr. Gomella is also recognized as an early contributor to urologic laparoscopy, starting Jefferson’s program in 1990. He led the urology effort in the 2017 and 2019 Philadelphia Prostate Cancer Consensus that provided the first multidisciplinary guidance on the genetic testing for prostate cancer.

Eric Gourley, MDDr. Gourley is a chief resident in San Antonio, Texas at UT Health. He is originally from Kansas and graduated from University of Kansas School of Medicine.

Jessica GreenJessica Green is the Education Program Manager in the Department of Urology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. For the past decade, she has worked in the program administrator role in both ACGME-accredited and non-ACGME accredited programs in Graduate Medical Education (GME) across multiple specialties. Further, she has served on multiple GME committees, participated in scholarly activity with residents and faculty, and was awarded ‘Staff Member of the Year’ by the residents in the Urology Department. Ms. Green is certified by the Training Administrators of Graduate Medical Education (C-TAGME) and holds a Project Management Certificate. Lastly, Jessica is the Immediate Past President of ACURe (Association of Coordinators in Urologic Residency Education).

George E. Haleblian, MDDr. George Haleblian is an associate surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Haleblian received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, his medical degree from the University of Southern California, and completed his urology residency at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center. He subsequently completed a fellowship in endourology and laparoscopic surgery at Duke University Hospital. Dr. Haleblian’s clinical interests include metabolic and surgical management of kidney stones and the minimally invasive management of prostate, kidney and bladder malignancies. Dr. Haleblian’s research focuses include dietary manipulation for prevention of urinary tract stone formation and the development of new technologies for management of kidney stones. He is actively involved in optimizing value in care of acute stone disease.

Misop Han, MD, MSDr. Misop Han is David Hall McConnell Professor of Urology and Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees at Johns Hopkins University. He received his residency training at Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He currently serves as the Program Director for Urology Residency Program and the Chair of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Credentials Committee.

Thomas Hardacker, MD, MBADr. Hardacker was born in Buffalo, NY and grew up outside of Indianapolis, IN. He attended Kenyon College for his undergraduate studies, where he was a four year starter and a captain of the baseball team. He received his MD and MBA degrees from Indiana University in 2015 before beginning his Urology residency at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He lives in Center City, Philadelphia with his wife, Sarah, and their dog, Morton, where he enjoys traveling and photography in his spare time.

Scott G. Hubosky, MDScott G. Hubosky, MD graduated Cum Laude from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in 1999 and completed urology residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 2005. He successfully completed a fellowship in Endourology and Laparoscopic Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA, and returned to join the staff of the Department of Urology at Thomas Jefferson University in July of 2006. Dr. Hubosky’s research interests include endoscopic management of upper tract urothelial carcinoma, nephrolithiasis, radiation safety and ureteroscopic instrumentation. He is Co-director of the Endourology Fellowship Program in the Department of Urology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He has helped contribute to the endourological training of numerous fellows across the country as well as others from Israel, Japan, Puerto Rico and Singapore. He is also the Vice Chairman of Quality and Safety for the department and has published multiple manuscripts on safety issues involving flexible ureteroscopy.

Stephen V. Jackman, MDDr. Stephen Jackman is Professor of Urology and Residency Program Director at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He has led the residency since 2004.

Clinically he specializes in minimally invasive surgery for cancer and stone disease. Research interests include kidney stones, imaging and surgical treatment of cancer.

Jean V. Joseph, MDDr. Joseph received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Boston University in 1988 and his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1992. Dr. Joseph completed his Residency in Urologic Surgery at the University of Rochester/Strong Memorial Hospital in 1998. He completed his fellowship training in reconstructive urologic surgery at the University College London in England in 2000, and completed a Master Class in laparoscopic prostatectomy in Paris in 2001. Dr. Joseph also earned his Master’s in Business Administration from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2004. Dr. Joseph's specializes in robotic surgery for urologic diseases, particularly prostate cancer. His areas of clinical and research interests have been on improving outcomes of men treated surgically for prostate cancer. He is known nationally and internationally for his work in this area. He is a pioneer in the field of robotic surgery, and recently served as President of the Society of Urologic Robotic Surgery. He has authored numerous medical journal articles on topics related to robotic and minimally invasive surgery. He serves as editor for "Doctor's advice," a patient oriented magazine focused on preventative health. He is a board-certified urologic surgeon. He is Professor of Urology and Oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he also serves as director of the Center for Robotic Surgery.

Jamie Kanofsky, MDJamie Kanofsky, MD is an Associate Professor of Urology and the Program Director for the NYU Langone Health Urology Residency Program. She also serves as the Urology Clerkship Director for both NYU and visiting medical students. She graduated with honors from Duke University and attended medical school at the George Washington University School of Medicine. She completed her residency training at NYU Medical Center and then served as the Director of the Urology Resident Clinic at Lenox Hill Hospital and as an attending at New York Hospital/ Weill Cornell College of Medicine before returning to NYU. Louis R. Kavoussi, MDDr. Kavoussi is a world-renowned surgeon recognized for his expertise in minimally invasive approaches. He has helped pioneered several new operative techniques which have become standard of care. He has also helped train many academic urologists around the world.

Dr. Kavoussi completed his undergraduate degree at Columbia University and medical degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He obtained his urologic training at Washington University of St. Louis and directly following residency was named Chief of Urology at the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis. In 1991 he was appointed Assistant Professor at Harvard School of Medicine and Director of Endourology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In 1993 he joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he was Vice Chairman of Urology and Patrick C. Walsh Distinguished Professor. Dr. Kavoussi is currently the Chair of Urology for the Northwell Health (Formerly North Shore-LIJ Health System) and the Waldbaum-Gardiner Distinguished Professor of Urology at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine.

He was part of several first teams that developed many of the minimally invasive approaches we use today including the laparoscopic nephrectomy, laparoscopic donor nephrectomy and laparoscopic prostatectomy. His contributions to the field of urology earned him the Golden Cystoscope Award of the American Urological Association and The Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Kidney Foundation.

Stephanie J. Kielb, MDDr. Kielb is an Associate Professor of Urology and the Residency Program Director in the Department of Urology at Feinberg School of Medicine. She is a recognized expert in voiding dysfunction and incontinence, having performed sacral neuromodulation and botulinum toxin injections for urinary leakage procedures since 2004. Dr. Kielb was awarded research funding to investigate the effects of sacral neuromodulation on urinary and bowel symptoms and pain, and has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in this area. She also performs minimally invasive procedures for stress incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, including robotic surgery as well as native-tissue and mesh slings. Dr. Kielb is the urologic director of the multi-disciplinary adult spina bifida clinic at the Rehabilitation Institue of Chicago and has extensive experience treating both men and women with neurogenic bladder. She is a founding member of the American Urological Association Working Group on Congenitalism and has published extensively on the needs and outcomes of this patient population. She manages adults with many other congenital genitourinary conditions, including cloacal exstrophy, sacral agenesis, urogenital sinus conditions, vaginal agenesis/atresia, and disorders of sexual differentiation. Additionally, Dr. Kielb specializes in the treatment of urinary symptoms related to spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurologic conditions which affect urination. Dr. Kielb is a respected clinician with surgical experience in complex reconstructive procedures, including bladder augmentation, mitrofanoff/monti procedures (catheterizable channels), ureteral reconstruction for ureteral strictures or injury including robotic ureteral reimplant, boari flap, psoas hitch, and ileal ureter construction for extensive ureteral strictures from radiation therapy. She also treats genitourinary fistulas, including vesicovaginal (between bladder and vagaina), ureterovaginal (between the ureter and vagina), and enterovesical (between bowel and bladder). Dr. Kielb regularly travels to Africa on women’s health mission trips, repairing genitourinary fistulas in Rwanda.

Jessica Kreshover, MD, MSJessica E. Kreshover, MD, MS is a fellowship trained specialist in minimally invasive urologic surgery. She is an Associate Professor at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, the Chief of Urology for Long Island Jewish Hospital, and Associate Program Director for the Urology Residency Program.

Dr. Kreshover came to medicine after a short but successful career in engineering. She started undergraduate school at the University of Pennsylvania and subsequently transferred to the University of Virginia where she was awarded a scholarship for the outstanding woman in engineering. She then pursued graduate studies and completed a Master’s of Science in Systems Engineering on a full scholarship before shifting her emphasis to medicine. Dr. Kreshover earned her MD from the University of Virginia in 2007. She completed residency in urology at Boston University Medical Center which included training at the Boston Children's Hospital and the Boston Veterans Affairs Hospitals.

John M. Lacy, MDDr. Lacy was raised in Clarkesville, GA and received his undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. He subsequently completed his surgical internship and urology residency at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY. Following residency, he took a clinical fellowship position in Male Genitourinary Reconstruction and Prosthetics at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH.

Dr. Lacy is Board Certified by the American Board of Urology and now works at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, TN, where he is the Urology Residency Program Director and Medical Student Clerkship Director. He is the past Chair of the American Urological Association (AUA) Residents and Fellows Committee and currently serves as a faculty member on the AUA Oral Board Review Course.

Chad A. LaGrange, MD, FACSDr. LaGrange serves as the Edward and Sally Malashock Chair of Urologic Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. LaGrange completed his fellowship at the University of Kentucky. His current work focuses on laparoscopic and robotic surgery as well as oncology.

Costas D. Lallas, MD, FACSDr. Costas Lallas is a Professor of Urology and Vice Chair for Academic Affairs at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. He currently holds leadership positions in both UME and GME realms, serving as the Director of Medical Student Education, the Associate Program Director for the Urology Residency, and the Co-Director for the Endourology Society-recognized fellowship in minimally invasive urologic oncology. He was responsible for creating the urology courses of study for the new case-based undergraduate medical school curriculum at SKMC, JeffMD, which initiated in July, 2017. Urology is currently the only surgical subspecialty that is represented in the first phase of this curriculum.

Clinically, he has focused his early career on the minimally-invasive surgical management of urologic malignancies. He performed the first robotic surgery at Jefferson and has served as the Director of Robotic Surgery for the institution since 2005. He has also served as the Co-Director of the Small Renal Mass Clinic in the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center since its incipience in 2009. Finally, he has served as the urology liaison to the renal transplantation team at Jefferson since 2005, performing laparoscopic donor nephrectomies, managing the outpatient transplant candidates and recipients, and participating in the weekly renal transplant interdisciplinary selection meetings.

Dr. Lallas completed medical school at Sidney Kimmel (Jefferson) Medical College before completing general surgery and urology training at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. He next completed a one year fellowship in minimally invasive urologic oncology at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona before coming back to Jefferson in 2005.

Gary E. Lemack, MDDr. Lemack is Professor of Urology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and Director of the Urology Residency Program. He has a secondary appointment in the Department of Neurology. He is also the Program Director for the Fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at UT Southwestern. After graduating from Cornell University Medical College, he completed his urologic residency at The New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center, and then a two year fellowship Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at UT Southwestern, where he has been on the faculty since 1999. His clinical practice focuses on care for women with incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and other refractory bladder disorders. His clinical research has focused on improving incontinence care for men and women with neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury. Much of his work has involved collaborations with the NIH/NIDDK-sponsored Urinary Incontinence Treatment Network.

Lara MacLachlan, MDLara MacLachlan, MD is a fellowship-trained Female Urologist who is currently an Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine practicing at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center. She completed her undergraduate studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine. She then completed her residency in Urology at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center followed by a fellowship at Medical University of South Carolina. Her clinical interests include the treatment of urinary incontinence, pelvic floor disorders and neurourology.

Robert Marcovich, MDDr. Robert Marcovich is Associate Professor of Urology and Residency Program Director at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He completed undergraduate and medical school at Brown University, residency at the University of Michigan, and Endourology Fellowship at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. His primary clinical and teaching interests are in the treatment and prevention of urolithiasis.

Ranjiv Mathews, MDDr. Mathews is a Professor in the Department of Surgery, as well as the Director of Pediatric Urology at Southern Illinois University. His specialties include pediatric urology, and his research interests include urinary tract infections, vesicoureteral reflex, and bladder exstrophy. He received his medical degree from U.T.E.S.A. School of Medicine, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republican.

Kurt A. McCammon, MDDr. Kurt McCammon is the Devine Chair in Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery and Chairman and Professor of the Department of Urology at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He is the Program Director of the Urology Residency Program and also the Program Director of the Adult and Pediatric Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship Program at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio and then went on to his urology residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School followed by a two year fellowship in genitourinary reconstructive surgery also at EVMS. Dr. McCammon received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Toledo in October 2011.

He is the current president of the Society of Genitourinary Surgeons and is the Chair of the Board of IVUmed. He is a member of the American Urological Association, the American College of Surgeons, the, IVUmed and Societe Internationale d’Urologie. Dr. McCammon is Diplomate of the American Board of Urology.

Dr. McCammon lectures both nationally and internationally on the topics of male and female reconstruction and has also authored numerous chapters and publications on pelvic reconstruction. His clinical interests include female urology, pelvic reconstruction, urethral reconstruction, and male incontinence.

Brian K. McNeil, MD, MBA, FACSBrian Keith McNeil, MD, MBA, FACS is the Vice Chair of the Department of Urology and Urology Residency Program Director at the SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. He also serves as the Urology Chief of Service at the University Hospital of Brooklyn. He completed a clinical fellowship in urologic-oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center following research fellowships in urologic-oncology at the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute and James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Similar to the "Doughnut City" concept, previously used to describe booming economic centers surrounded by concentrated pockets of poverty, some patient groups have access to state-of-the-art treatment while other more vulnerable populations lack access to standard of care therapy. This is not only an issue in urology but also most fields of health care. His focus is urologic care in medically underserved communities, a dilemma international in scope, which he strongly believes we must “think globally and act locally.”

Suzanne B. Merrill, MDSuzanne B. Merrill, MD is currently an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Urologic Oncologist in the Division of Urology at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. She also serves as the program director for the urology residency. Dr. Merrill graduated summa cum laude from The University of Delaware where she received a bachelor of arts with honors in biology and chemistry. She attended The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Medicine where she graduated with AOA honors. Dr. Merrill completed her urology residency at Duke University followed by a SUO accredited urologic oncology fellowship at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. While at Mayo she also received a certificate in clinical and translational research science. Dr. Merrill’s clinical practice focuses on utilizing open, robotic and laparoscopic techniques to treat all primary/recurrent urologic cancers. By joining Penn State Urology, she has brought the unique skill of performing a radical cystectomy robotically (removing the bladder for treatment of invasive cancer). She is the only one in this region currently using this technique.

Allen F. Morey, MDIn 2007, Dr. Morey came to Dallas as Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Department of Urology, where he currently holds the Distinguished Chair in Urologic Reconstruction in honor of Allen F. Morey, MD and the Paul C. Peters, MD Chair in Urology. He established and directs the successful UTSW fellowship program in Urologic Trauma, Reconstruction, and Prosthetics.

Dr. Morey received his undergraduate degree from Lafayette College in Easton, PA in 1983. He earned his medical degree in 1987 at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD., where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. After his internship and urology residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, he completed a fellowship in urologic trauma and reconstruction at the University of California, San Francisco, in 1997.

Victor W. Nitti, MDVictor W. Nitti, MD, is Professor of Urology and Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Shlomo Rax Chair in Urology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He is also the Chief of the Division of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery and is the Fellowship Director for UCLA's ACGME accredited program. He is a graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and did his urology residency at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, NY. He then completed a fellowship in female urology, neurourology and reconstructive urology at UCLA. Dr. Nitti served on the faculty at SUNY Brooklyn before joining the faculty of NYU in 1995. He is an authority in urodynamic techniques, medical and surgical therapies for urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, female pelvic reconstructive surgery and voiding dysfunction. He has presented his research at national and international meetings and has been invited as a visiting professor and participated in postgraduate courses throughout the world.

Jay D. Raman, MD, FACSJay D. Raman, MD has been Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Urology at the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center since 2015. He received his undergraduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and graduated AOA from Cornell University Medical College. Dr. Raman completed his Urology Residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Cornell Medical Center followed by a Fellowship in Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Dr. Raman’s clinical practice focuses on robotic-assisted surgery for upper and lower tract urologic cancers, having completed over 2,000 cases. His basic science research centers on infectious complications following prostate needle biopsy, while his major clinical research efforts revolve around staging and therapy for upper-tract urothelial carcinoma as well as complications of urologic surgery.

Lee Richstone, MDLee Richstone, MD is the Chief of Urology at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center and is Vice Chairman of Urology for the North Shore - Long Island Jewish Health System.

Dr. Richstone completed medical school at the Cornell University Medical College in New York City. There he won early acceptance into Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), the prestigious national medical honor society. He pursued his urologic training and chief residency at New York Presbyterian (Weill-Cornell) and Memorial Sloan Kettering hospitals. Dr. Richstone completed his fellowship training in urologic laparoscopic and robotic surgery and joined the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System in 2007 as Director of Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery.

Dr. Richstone is the first to perform robotic radical cystectomy on Long Island and regularly performs neobladder reconstructions completely robotically through small incisions. He has perfomed hundreds of robotic surgeries for prostate, kidney and bladder cancer, with a focus on preserving urinary continence and sexual function. Dr. Richstone has also pioneered Laparoendoscopic Single Site Surgery (LESS), where entire laparoscopic operations are performed only through the belly button, with no other scars. In fact, Dr. Richstone is one of only a few surgeons in the United States to have performed single site partial nephrectomy and prostatectomy.

Stephen B. Riggs, MD, FACSDr. Steve Riggs is a board-certified Urologist and fellowship trained Urologic Oncologist. He is currently an Associate Professor of Urology and Residency Program Director at Atrium Health in Charlotte, NC. In addition to his clinic and resident program responsibilities, he chairs both the Robotics’ Committee for the main hospital as well as the system wide Commission on Cancer Committee. He is active in clinical research focusing on quality improvement within Urologic Oncology through protocol driven care, iterative analysis, transparency and feedback. He completed his Medical Degree at the Medical University of South Carolina, internship at Vanderbilt, residency training at the Medical University of Mississippi and fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles. He enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, embracing anything outdoors.

Chad W.M. Ritenour, MDDr. Chad W. M. Ritenour is currently Vice Chair of Education and Faculty Affairs and Professor in the Department of Urology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. He is also the Chief Medical Officer for Emory University Hospital. He is the current Chair of the ACGME Review Committee for Urology. As Director of the Division of Men’s Health/Infertility and General Urology, he has worked to develop efficient care processes, including use of video-assisted consents for the urologic patient. He previously served as Interim Chairman for the Emory Department of Urology in 2010-2013 and Program Director from 2002-2019.

Dr. Ritenour attended the University of Virginia as an Echols Scholar and subsequently received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia before completing his urological surgery training at Emory University. In 2010, he was a Fellow in the American Urological Association-Japanese Urological Association Academic Exchange Program. He was also a Fellow in the Woodruff Leadership Academy in 2005.

Daniel B. Rukstalis, MDDr. Rukstalis is a urologist in academic practice at Wake Forest University School of Medicine who is interested in the development of novel devices and therapeutics for both benign and malignant disorders of the genitourinary tract with a focus in urologic imaging. He is currently involved in the development of clinical applications of high frequency diagnostic ultrasound, targeted ablations and the prostatic urethral lift.

Kristen R. Scarpato, MD, MPH, FACSDr. Scarpato is an Assistant Professor of Urology at Vanderbilt University where she completed her fellowship in Urologic Oncology. She is the Program Director for the Urology Residency. In addition to urologic cancer, she has active interests in residency education, surgical simulation and global health.

Michael Schwartz, MD, FACSMichael J. Schwartz, MD is Residency Program Director and Director of Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery for the Smith Institute for Urology at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. After completing medical school at Brown University, Dr. Schwartz went on to his urology residency training at the New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Medical College of Cornell University and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Following residency training, he completed a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery under the mentorship of Dr. Louis Kavoussi at North Shore University and Long Island Jewish Hospitals.

His practice encompasses urologic oncology including surgical treatment of prostate, kidney, bladder, adrenal, and testicular cancers. He has additional expertise in benign urologic disease such as treatment of kidney stones and in laparoscopic reconstructive surgery of the kidney, ureters, and bladder. He has particular interest in prostate cancer screening, diagnostics, and treatment and has one of the largest experiences in transperineal fusion biopsy in the country.

Current research focuses mainly on urologic malignancy with a special interest in developing innovations in detection of prostate cancer. He has published numerous peer reviewed articles on kidney, bladder, prostate, and testis cancer. He has also authored several textbook chapters including chapters on renal surgery and intraoperative consultation which appear in Campbell’s Urology.

Patrick J. Shenot, MD, FACSDr. Patrick Shenot is Associate Professor of Urology and Deputy Chair of the Department of Urology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College. He has served as Residency Program Director since 2003. Dr. Shenot received his undergraduate degree from the Pennsylvania State University and is a graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Medicine. He completed general surgery and urology training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He completed a fellowship in Neurourology and Voiding Dysfunction at Jefferson in 1999.

His major clinical interests are in neurourology and voiding dysfunction, particularly in the care of spinal cord injured patients. He has been actively involved in clinical research in the development of new therapies for the management of neurogenic bladder dysfunction and has been principal investigator for more than thirty funded clinical trials.

Mathew D. Sorensen, MD, MS, FACSDr. Sorensen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urology at University of Washington. In 2012 he was named the Director of the Comprehensive Metabolic Stone Clinic at the Puget Sound VA Hospital. He is a surgeon, educator, and researcher with a specialty interest in advanced laparoscopic surgery, endourology and the medical and surgical management of kidney stones.

Dr. Sorensen is a dedicated educator and is the Urology Residency Program Director. He is primarily responsible for the oversight and management of the residency training program. This innovative training program is focused on training the next generation of leaders in urology.

Dr. Sorensen's research interests have focused on epidemiologic, outcomes, and health services-related projects, as well as basic science and translational ultrasound research. Through a strong collaboration with the Applied Physics Laboratory, they are working to improve the detection and sizing of kidney stones with ultrasound. The group has also developed two ultrasound-based therapies, using ultrasound to relocate or push kidney stones transcutaneously and a novel device that fragments stones with ultrasound bursts.

Heidi A. Stephany, MDDr. Heidi Stephany is a board certified urologist with a subspecialty certification in pediatric urology. Dr. Stephany received her medical doctorate at the University Of Kansas School Of Medicine, and completed her residency training in urology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She subsequently matriculated to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, where she completed her pediatric urology fellowship. Prior to joining CHOC Children’s in August 2017, Dr. Stephany was an Assistant Professor and the Associate Clinical Director for the Division of Pediatric Urology at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, from 2013-2017.

Dr. Stephany’s clinical interests include complex reconstructive surgery, specifically hypospadias and disorders of sexual differentiation. She participates in clinical outcomes research with an interest in voiding dysfunction. Resident and fellow education is also a primary focus in her academic career both locally and internationally, and she volunteers with International Volunteers in Urology (IVUMed), which includes traveling to Africa biannually to conduct workshops with local urologists.

Martha K. Terris, MD, FACSMartha K. Terris, MD is Professor and Chief of the Section of Urology, holding the Witherington Distinguished Chair in Urology at the Medical College of Georgia/Augusta University. Dr. Terris strives to maintain resident and student teaching as a priority in tertiary urologic care and takes great pride in the quality of the urologic training program at the Medical College of Georgia. She received her general surgery training at Duke University and urology residency and fellowship at Stanford University. She served as Assistant Professor of Urology at Stanford University until joining the Medical College of Georgia in 2002 as Professor and Program Director as well as Chief of the Augusta VA Urology Service. Dr. Terris assumed the role of Section Chief at the Medical College of Georgia in 2012 where she provides the full spectrum of urologic oncology patient care. She has published over 300 scientific articles including some of the seminal articles on urologic cancer diagnosis and risk factors for poor cancer outcomes. She is past president of both the Society of University Urologists and Society of Urology Chairs and Program Directors, has served on the urology Residency Review Committee, and is currently Trustee of the American Board of Urology.

J. Brantley Thrasher, MD, FACSDr. J. Brantley Thrasher is Professor Emeritus and former Chairman of the Department of Urology and Co-Director of Operative Services at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. A native of South Carolina, he completed his Medical Degree at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina, an internship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C., and his urology residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. He subsequently completed a urologic oncology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. He served for three years as Program Director for the Urology Residency Program at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, and after completing his military obligation, he was appointed as Chair in 1998.

Erica J. Traxel, MDErica Traxel is an Assistant Professor in Urology at Washington University in St. Louis, where she has been a practicing pediatric urologist since 2009. Dr. Traxel graduated from Texas A&M University in 1998 and from Baylor College of Medicine in 2002. She completed her Residency in Urologic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 2007 and her Fellowship in Pediatric Urology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in 2009. She has been the Urology Residency Program Director at Washington University and the Patient Safety Officer for the Division of Urology since 2014. Her professional passions lie at the intersection of Patient Safety/Quality Improvement and Medical Education. Her personal joys include her husband Mike, her boys Lincoln (age 7) and Beckett (age 3), and St. Louis sports (Let's Go Blues!).

Mary E. Westernman, MDDr. Mary E. Westerman is a Urology Specialist in Houston, TX. She graduated with honors from University Of Texas Southwestern Medical School At Dallas in 2014. Having more than six years of diverse experiences, especially in urology, Dr. Mary E. Westerman affiliates with many hospitals including Mayo Clinic Hospital Rochester, University Of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and cooperates with many other doctors and specialists in many medical groups including Mayo Clinic, Physicians Referral Service.
