about the authors

Alan Jay Lerner (Book & lyrics) and Frederick Loewe (Music) After Rodgers and Hammerstein, the duo was the most successful and beloved Broadway musical team of the post-World War II decades. Alan Jay Lerner (1918-1986) was born into a wealthy New York family, the owners of the chain of retail clothing stores called the Lerner Shops, and educated at Harvard, Juilliard, and Oxford Universities, writing librettos and lyrics for campus shows and then working in radio as

a scriptwriter. Frederick Loewe (1901-1988) was born in Berlin, Germany, to a musical family and was a child prodigy on the piano, playing with the Berlin Symphony at the age of thirteen and two years later writing the hit song “Katrina.” He studied with celebrated music teachers in Europe before emigrating in 1924 to America where he could not make a living with music and for ten years worked as a boxer, a busboy, a cow puncher, and even a gold prospector. Loewe finally had some of his songs interpolated into the Broadway reviews Petticoat Fever (1935) and The Illustrators’ Show (1936) and then his full score was heard in the short-lived operetta Great Lady (1938). Lerner and Loewe met in 1942 and collaborated on the admirable but unsuccessful Broadway musicals What’s Up (1943) and The Day Before Spring (1945) before having their first hit with Brigadoon (1947). Lerner worked with composer Kurt Weill on the experimental musical Love Life (1948) and then reteamed with Loewe for the modest success Paint Your Wagon (1951) and the giant success My Fair Lady (1956). During this time Lerner was also active in Hollywood, scoring the movie musicals Royal Wedding (1951) with composer Burton Lane and writing the screenplay for the classic An American in Paris (1951). Both Lerner and Loewe had a mammoth Hollywood hit together with Gigi (9158) and then returned to Broadway to score Camelot (1960). Loewe retired in the 1960s, only returning to the stage to write some new songs for the 1973 Broadway version of Gigi and to score the ill-fated movie musical The Little Prince (1974). Lerner continued on with other collaborators but rarely found success on Broadway again. His late stage credits are On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1965), Coco (1969), Carmelina (1979), 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (1976), and Dance a Little Closer (1983). Loewe’s music is rich in variety, has strong melodic lines, and blends the operetta and Broadway sound with very pleasing results. Lerner always wrote or co-wrote the librettos for his musicals, which vary in quality, although the script for My Fair Lady remains one of the finest musical adaptations in the American theatre. His lyrics are consistently literate, witty, and elegantly memorable.
