“This gift is a game-changer for our hospital, one that will shape the future of the health care we provide to the communities of the South Bay for generations,” Craig Leach, president and CEO, Torrance Memorial, said. “The Lundquists have generously supported our hospital for many years, but this gift is simply transformational for us and the community. We express our most sincere thanks to the Lundquists for their vision, support and generosity.” The Lundquists have requested that the new Main Tower be dedicated to the memory of Richard B. Hoffman, MD, a long-time radiologist and visionary for the hospital. The hospital’s Main Tower construction began in March 2011. The 390,000 square-foot facilities will include seven stories, 256 private rooms, and 18 surgical and interventional treatment rooms with state-of-the-art technology. The Lundquists, well-known philanthropists in Southern California, supported the new building from the beginning through sup-port of the “Growing for Our Community” fundraising campaign, and serve as capital campaign co-chairs. Over time, the Lundquists have given nearly $70 million to Torrance Memorial. They also give their support to other educational and health care initiatives in the area. To learn more about the new Lundquist Tower visit www.torrancememorial.org/LundquistTower.

Starting December 10th – 5 Tower Pilot

Complete Implementation February 25th – Inpatient Units / ED / TCU

1. Barcoded Medication Administration This is the administration of medications by scanning a barcode on the patient and the medication.

2. Nursing CPOE

This is having the nurse enter telephone or verbal orders directly into the computer. Benefits to the Patient, Physician & NP:

Decreased medication errors during administration Decreased order transcription errors Increased efficiency as the orders are entered immediately into the computer

Changes the Physician or NP may notice:

CPOE Physicians will notice a cleaner, simpler Medication Alert Override Reason drop down list. Physician will be contacted by RN if any Telephone or Verbal orders for medications trigger an alert (ex. allergy or drug-

to-drug interaction). Physician will assist the RN in clarifying the Alert. If the alert is confusing to both the RN and Physician there is a new override reason “Unable to determine: MD requests

call from Pharmacist“ to allow the Physician to address the alert directly with a Pharmacist. For more information contact the Clinical Informatics Department at (310) 325-9110 ext. 4988.
