An angel tires of overseeing human
activity and wishes to become human
when he falls in love with a mortal.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093191/
Wings of Desire, 1987, Director Wim
Wenders
The rst project of the new year a chronogram of the lm Wings of Desire and the library sequence in particular, the objec -
tive was to map a lm clip and begin to question the way in which movies are shot and then displayed, the relevance of thecamera movements and what effects these have of the viewer.
Personal Outcome:
Looking at moving image and breaking this down into a drawing in which represents the lm and my views on the scenes
shot and the relevant/ important sequences highlighted throughout, the drawing above maps the movement of the cameraand the line of movement across the short clip, the lm is split over two levels with many camera angles to emphasize an
emotion or a scene, switching from 1st and 3rd person perspectives, the lm audio is highlighted in a voice recording draw -
ing with the high intensity of the music highlighted in the orange overlay and the low audio outputs in blue.

Abandoned factory left in disrepair
shows the remanence of a life beforethe city land prices increased and
pushed smaller business away.
The modern Swiss re building looming
high in the skyline with its clean slickglazed facade, just a short walk away
from the abandoned factory but leagues
away in its current condition.
The modern sight of the glazed skyscraper high above the surrounding buildings with the height of these buildings growing
as the developers wish to build higher and higher to show the buildings power in the city, glazed facades are the design of
the future in the city, this buildings lacking character and rapidly changing into a single palette of materials glass and steelto represent the modern design.

Observations during the site visit
The City of London borders directly onto one of the poorest boroughs in LondonTower Hamlets, where diversity has a strong current within the borough and the
community an area which has a mix of 45% white British and Asian or Asian
British 35% being the strongest populations, the area has a heavy culture of Asian
inuence infused into what was known as a traditional British culture with Petty
Coat Market being a prime example.
Petty coat lane is like many markets found in London in recent years where the
diversity amongst the stalls varies, with inuence in Tower hamlets housing
many backgrounds and cultures the market has adjusted over the years to create a
rich colourful market, which is showing how the market can adapt over time, the
market almost stand shoulders with that of the investment traderpowerhouses.
The photo shows the view from the market stall with the powerhouses of Heron Tower,Natwest Tower and the Gherkin to the left had side towering above the run down streets of
tower hamlets, the stark contrast in materials are evident the tower hamlets brick render and
concrete against the modern fully gazed facades and structural exposed materials.
Tower hamlets dark brick housing estate against thetowering back drop of the new student housing block,
which has been clad in modern materials, dwarng the
housing estate, representing the solid standings between
the two communities.
A modern refurbishment showing the if treatedrespectfully the building can be restored and
improved this building is on a street with new builds
to the left and abandoned shops to the right, the party
wall suggests the buildings have crashed together
The site is steeped in history andwondering around the area stumble
across such gems as above, this
was originally a building which
would feed the Jewish poor, now
refurbished into plush apartments
opposite a social housing block

What do the walls say about the city..
Shoreditch is one of the most diverse areas in London, the area focused on is the on the boundaries between the City of London and Tower Hamlets.
The two boroughs differ in many areas the strongest being the nancial differences one being one of the superpowers in the world and the other one of the poorest
boroughs in London.
The divides are evident in the architecture as highlighted on this page, the City is full of modern crisp clean buildings which are well maintained and highlight the
areas wealth, Tower Hamlets houses many of the poorest people in London and the architecture is in stark difference with dark brickwork, less glass and poorly
maintained external skins which breed negativity in the area.
Upon these trip around the site the feeling for personal safety changed as the architecture changed the feeling of security and safety of the city was more than
adequate in the tower hamlets borough sometimes literally across the street had a very different feel more people taking interest in you and as I wondered into areaswith the abandoned street the local became suspicious, creating a unwelcoming presence in the community
The open glazed facades of the ofce
buildings allow for maximising light
penetration and also maximising the
transparency to the outside world,
the glazed facades also reect there
environments which in turn leave a print
of there selves onto the skin of these
curtain walls
Modern usage of expensive materials to the external skins to
the ofce buildings giving the streetscapes a modern wealthy
exterior, the reective materials reect natural illuminating the
facades
The traditional
courtyards
refurbished and
modernised to
become the new
places to go
and places for
investments, the
oor space becomes
more desirable
creating a new
income and wealth
within the area
The poorly lit walkways and dirty stained
concrete make for a uninviting external skin,
the pathways look unsafe and unwelcoming, the
slight illumination to the right of the picture give
this photo a deserted feeling to the building
The picture shows the differenc
and existing commuting and the
students in their modern block,
the negativity and poverty stree
student block which provides m
the location of the area, mixing
communities
Petti coat lane market traders keep the
traditional markets going and local tradingproviding amenities to the local communities
while the modern share trading dominating
the skyline in the backdrop of the picture, the
overpowering modern buildings beginning to
shade the less wealthy areas of surrounding
boroughs, the market is a historic market and
keeping jobs to the local commentates and
providing cultural needs

Film
In this lm I wish to explore the area
and record a short lm which en
captures the transformation the area
is going on and how the walls are theonly last artefacts of this as developers
and communities don’t not interact.
Shoreditch are is a place of great
transformation and redevelopment with
the city bursting and spilling into thesurrounding areas improving amenities
an facilities within their surroundings,
what if any is left on their walls which
describe the area that once was and is
now and the current limbos in betweenthe ruined and the modern.
Artillery Lane
This is a historic route through London where the artillery used
to pass, the lane now still keeps the traditional lane appear-ance with the narrow passageway with timber fronted shops,
this space is a very popular cut through in the area the shops,
hairdressers, pubs and restaurants this small lane has turned into
a place of interest with amenities again remember its past butbring into the fore front like the rest of the city, the lane is a cut
through form the city into Tower Hamlets
Spitalelds Light wall
This part of the market is on one of the entrance/ exists of the market
the wall displays colour through a glazed framing system which alter-nates through the cycle, the creates a interesting connecting between
the vibrant transparent new and the traditional brickwork shops to the
external boundary of the market, this wall creates a visual connec-
tion between the historic market and the bright vibrant internal t out, keeping the principles of the market but bringing the market up-to-
date to match the surroundings.
Spitalelds Light cube
A colourful cube artwork remembering the
history of the market and the colour changesrepresents the changes over time with new
products but keeping its core as a market.

would be the effects if the Chinese superpowers begin trading to but iconic

It is a place of vast immigration, from countries of overpopulation and poverty. While immigrants crowd the city, the
indigenous petite bourgeoisie moves to the suburbs or to the “off- world” as the case may be. Abandoned buildings and
neighbourhoods in decay adjoin highly populated, crowded old areas, themselves set next to new, high- tech business
districts.Ramble City: Post modernism and Blade Runner, GIULIANA BRUNO, October, No. 41 (1987), pp. 66

Project Idea 1 - Blade Runner
The blade runner set would be glowing, slightly run down constant ran and external retro ts to the
existing structure with a dense population, the market place already exists.
The site already has a lot of the infrastructure in place for a blade runner lm, the high skyline in the
backdrop a heavy diverse inuenced population with the local area and hive of activity markets and the
Gilano Bruno quote describing the blade runner city is almost like for like on the area.

millions murdered and families left in isolation the government set
up a series of districts where a concentration of people could live on
