HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYINGTHIS PROBLEM?

A research was done following a number of gender basedviolence (GBV) cases that were increasingly reported, and

often long after the time the offence is committed. It wasdiscovered that a lot of people shunned away from help

facilities because of stigma and also incapacity in health and

police staff to be able to handle the gender based violence

    cases.

A number of people spoken to revealed that in most hospitalsor clinics or even police stations, survivors of GBV were

laughed at, stigmatised as well as intimidated that they wouldend up losing and getting embarrassed.

    IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?

The increase in the number for people who shunnedseeking help as soon as they were violated is animportant issue to address because in cases suchas rape, the evidence when presented as soon as a

person is attacked creates an easy platform forprosecution of the perpetuator

IMPACT (BASED ON THE SADC PROTOCOLTARGETS)

In line with a goal to halve the levels of GBV by2015, Lifeline Zambia has been running a livephone-in radio programme on Zambias nationalradio stations which aims at discussing and

educating the listeners on GBV issues.

On the other hand, the helpline has recorded anincrease in the number of GBV related calls a signthat more people are being informed through this

sensitisation as well as the distributed IECmaterials.
