MCG & Co. is a traditional medium sized accounting firm located in the inner eastern suburbs of Melbourne. It is a third tier firm with a staff of 20 and 3 Partners with strong history dating back to the 1920’s and a proud tradition of providing excellence in financial services and accounting.
MCG & Co has a few overseas/multinational firms as its clients. These currently firms account for less than 10% but are an increasing source of revenue for MCG. Also many overseas companies want to do business in Australia. This report targets to increase revenue from such clients and attract more such clients for MCG.

2 . M A R K E T A N A L Y S I S
Morris Cohen Glen & Co offers expertise in all areas of accounting, bookkeeping, and financial-based planning. The firm has a solid customer base in a market that has experienced constant but slowing growth in the past years. However there is increasing competition from a variety of sources. The firm is highly dependent on revenues from tax planning and payroll services for businesses and individuals. These areas account for significant amount of revenues. This presents a long-term threat to the firm due to competition and changes in the market.
There are tiers in the Accounting industry. The first tier comprises the big four accounting firms. The second tier that comprises of multinational accounting firms of large size. The third tier comprises the national level accounting firms followed by numerous regional level firms. MCG & Co. is a third tier firm that caters to the national level market, although most of its clients are based in Victoria.
The big four dominate the market of large Australian companies and MNCs. The second tier also particularly targets multinational and large national firms. The third tier generally caters to smaller firms and MCG & Co has been able to garner a few small and mid-size companies in addition to a few large customers.

7S FRAMEWORK
The 7S model can be used in a wide variety of situations where an alignment perspective is useful, for example to help you:
• Improve the performance of a company • Examine the likely effects of future changes within a company • Align departments and processes during a merger or acquisition • Determine how best to implement a proposed strategy
The Seven Elements The McKinsey 7S model involves seven interdependent factors which are categorized as either "hard" or "soft" elements:
Morris Cohen Glen & Co.
Page 8
Hard Elements Soft Elements
Strategy
Structure
Systems
Shared Values
Skills
Style
Staff
"Hard" elements are easier to define or identify and management can directly influence them: These are strategy statements; organization charts and reporting lines; and formal processes and IT systems.
"Soft" elements, on the other hand, can be more difficult to describe, and are less tangible and more influenced by culture. However, these soft elements are as important as the hard elements if the organization is going to be successful
Strategy The current strategy of the firm is targeted towards both individuals and businesses and it mainly services mid-size firms. The firm however has a few overseas large customers. These firms typically have an accounting department who understand ‘accounting’ and present less hassles. It would be beneficial to add more large volume less hassle customers given the capability.
Recommendation:
• Lure Overseas Customers - The Firm should target more large overseas customers wanting to register in Australia. They should advertise more about the business advisory services and typically render this service for free against an accounting contract from the client or for a nominal fee. The trust built in the initial phase can go a long way in establishing a long term contract with the prospect.
• Increasing revenue from growing clients – Typically the firm gets a fixed fee/rate from a client throughout the term of the contract. This does not take into account the increasing workload caused by the increase in number of transactions as well as employees of the client. The contract should account for the increasing workload or should be revisited frequently.
• Tie-up with a Management Consultancy – The Firm can also plan to tie-up with a consulting firm to recommend MCG & Cos services to their clients. Thus the consultancy firm can be paid certain amount of commission for its recommended clients.
• Steal from other accounting firms – The firm should target viable prospects in the vicinity and visit them to present the firms services to these prospects personally.
• Client Referral program – The firm does reward firms that bring in a referral client, however it does not have a formal program. It may be a good idea to introduce such a policy in order to rope in more clients.
Morris Cohen Glen & Co.
Page 9
• Rapport with clients - They should also host informal parties to the current clients to build an excellent rapport with them, so that they even recommend the firm’s services to other companies.
Structure The structure of the firm is based on the partner’s clients. Typically employees work with a partner for the clients. Although this set-up gives maximum efficiency poses the risk of employee turnover.
Recommendation:
• We recommend shuffling of resources between various clients so that teams learn from other teams and there is a general sharing of best practices.
Systems The processes followed within the organization are very informal taken from its small company culture. The employees work with spreadsheet tools with much efficiency.
Recommendation:
• As the firm grows larger it should formalize certain processes to enable smooth functioning of the firm. • Website - The website of the firm is rather archaic and needs to be enhanced. Please refer section 6
for recommendations on improving the website.
Morris Cohen Glen & Co.
Page 10
Style The firm currently has an informal culture where people are not asked many questions. Being a small firm, this kind of management works well.
Recommendation:
• The firm can declare incentives in case employees bring in a few clients, in order to encourage ‘entra-preneurship. ‘
Staff The staff of the firm is highly motivated and enjoys friendly policies and an easier approach towards work. There is also a good diverse mix of cultures within the team and they gel together very well
Recommendation:
• The firm could also use the diversity to its advantage. For e.g. by meeting with a prospective Indian company with its Indian employees.
• The firm could on pushing the importance of explaining the tax documents to the clients. Since most individuals do not comprehend the tax filings, emphasis on explaining the documents will ensure trust amongst the clients and also give them a feeling of importance.
Skills The skills of the firm are the competent employees & knowledgeable partners. The firm however has poor marketing skills.
Morris Cohen Glen & Co.
Page 11
Recommendation:
• The firm should try to build a competency in marketing its services by either hiring a marketing consultant or signing up an employee.
Shared values The partners stress upon establishing long standing relationships with their clients by ensuring the firm’s reputation for excellent service is maintained. It also stresses on qualified people who keep abreast with the latest developments.
Recommendation:
• The firm should promote higher qualifications for its employees. • It should keep stressing on building relationship with the clients by ensuring high-quality service.
4 . W A Y S T O L U R E O V E R S E A S C U S T O M E R S
NEWSLETTER The firm does have a monthly and quarterly newsletter for its clients but it does not actually target overseas customers. The firm should include pointers and information about starting a business in Australia on its website.
TRADE SHOWS The firm should attend international trade shows such as CeBIT that bring in many customers to improve networking. Some of such conferences are mentioned below.
Expo/Conference Website Venue
Asia-Pacific Incentives & Meetings Expo http://www.aime.com.au/
17-18 Feb, 2009 Melbourne

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION The firm should optimize the search visibility of its website so that anyone searching for starting a business in Australia would see the website in terms of helping the prospective client in the initial set-up of the business. It can also place the website as a sponsored link on such a search.
REGISTER ON GOVT WEBSITES The firm should register the website on websites that give information about various companies so that anyone searching for an accounting firm in Melbourne should be able to see the website. E.g. websites listed below
http://services.business.vic.gov.au/findanadviser/ http://www.business.gov.au/Business+Entry+Point/How-to+Guides/
HIGHLIGHT ASNAF ASSOCIATION The firm should emphasize on its association with the ASNAF on its newsletters, website, mails, etc.
ADVERTISE IN THE REGIONAL NEWSLETTERS The firm should advertise in local newspapers, newsletters serving the particular target community. For e.g.

TARGET PROSPECTIVE COMPANIES INDIVIDUALLY • The firm should target prospective clients by setting up a meeting with them and presenting the
services of the firm to them. In case the client is already registered then in that case the firm can try to rake in a part of the accounting services such as audit services from this client to build initial rapport. It can make use of social networking websites such as ‘linkedin’ to contact such prospects.
• Tie-up with accounting firms overseas - The firm can also tie-up with accounting firms overseas, so that when their clients expand into Australia, these firms recommend Morris Cohen Glen & Co. for accounting services.
• Tie-up with specialized Business Advisory firms – The firm can also tie-up with specialized business advisory firms in Australia so that when they do get a new client in Australia, they would recommend MCG & Co. as accounting partners.
Please find a list of prospective and current Indian IT companies in Australia that the firm can target by portraying its competency in handling such companies in Appendix A.
