Project STEAM MD is dedicated to building future leaders and entrepreneurs through exposure to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math).

We immerse student in The Design Process and by doing so we prepare them to be the inventors, entrepreneurs and job makers of the future. Students in Project STEAM MD learn to use traditional and digital media such as:

• Drawing

• Painting

• Sculpture

• Animation

• Ceramics

• Circuits

• Computer Science

• Robotics

• 3D sculpting and modeling

• 3D Printing

• Game Design

• Engineering

Exploration and Exposure

What is Project STEAM MD?

One of the most important aspects of Project STEAM MD is collaboration. The students collaborate with peers and teach each other to explore a wide range of tools in traditional and digital media. Students in Project STEAM MD begin the week with a theme such as cityscapes. They research, paint and draw cityscapes. Next, the students will use Blender 3D (modeling software) to design cityscapes. Finally, students will use what they've learned and their to design and program interactive media. Project STEAM MD students use a single problem to inspire creativity within a wide range of tools.

year we will compete in Lego

League Robotics and join the National Society of Black Engineers.

Looking Back

During the 2014- 2015 school year students were introduced to 3D Printing for the first time. We made 3D printing part of our design process.

Year End Overview

During the 2014-2015 school year students were able to use problem solving skills and collaboration to:

• Compete in Destination Imagination

• Design, model, sculpt and Print in 3D

• Design Murals

• Learn the basics of an Electrical Circuits

• Design and use beginner and advanced robotics

• Program robots to perform a task

• Use design and programming skills to design games

• Research, design and use simple machines (pulleys, levers, catapults, wheel with axle etc.)

• Design interactive media projects

• Develop drawing and painting skills

Destination Imagination Destination Imagination is a competition in which students compete against other students throughout the state to solve challenges in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art, and math. The students choose and solve challenges creatively through teamwork and problem solving skills. This year we supported students in two Destination Imagination challenges:

• Creature Feature – Build a creature that uses technical methods to perform team-chosen actions. – Present a story of adventure with the creature as a character. – Use technical methods to demonstrate features of a world where the story is set. – Create and present two Team Choice Elements that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents.

• Brand Aid - Use the creative process to identify, design and carry out a project that addresses at least one real community need. – Use graphic arts and sounds to create an effective brand to help meet the project goal(s). – Create a live presentation that highlights the project and project evaluation. – Design and create a project puzzle to be put together during the presentation. Create and present two Team Choice Elements that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength and talents.

The students did an amazing job of competing and having fun. None of this could have been accomplished without parent commitment and support.

3D Sculpting Modeling and Printing3D sculpting, modeling and printing gives students the opportunity to build objects in a 3D digital environment and immediately have physical real-world results to view and interact with.Project STEAM MD. introduces students to a wide range of open-source software. We encourage parents and students to download the free and highly versatile software at home. Project STEAM MD currently uses:

• Blender 3D - students design 3D models, sculpture, and interactive media.

• Inkscape: a free adobe illustrator alternative.

• Gimp: a free photoshop alternative

• Scratch: teaches students basic to advanced computer science.

• Cura - free 3D printing software

Computer Science, Game Design and Animation

Project STEAM MD exposes students to a wide range of problem solving tools. This year we introduced students to computer science, game design and animation using Scratch, Pivot, Inkscape and Blender 3D. We've learned that if we teach students the artist/creative process they can freely flow through multiple mediums and tools to explore their creativity and solve real world problems. Often, real world problems mean combing different skills and tools to solve the problem.
