Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey andlaunched in July of that year.

Twitters origins lie in a day long brainstorming session thatwas held by board members of the podcasting companyOdeo. While sitting in a park on a childrens slide andeating Mexican food, Dorsey introduced the idea of anindividual using an SMS service to communicate with asmall group.

The first Twitter prototype was used as an internal service forOdeo employees and the full version was introducedpublicly on July 15, 2006.

The original project code name for the service was twttr,an idea that Williams later ascribed to Noah Glass, inspiredby the name of the social media image website Flickr andthe five-character length of American SMS short codes.

The team finally settled on the name twitter, which meanschirps from birds in essence a short burst ofinconsequential information.

The tipping point for Twitters popularity was the 2007 Southby Southwest (SXSW) festival. During the event, Twitterusage increased from 20,000 tweets per day to 60,000.

When using the Twitter platform, there are a few thingsto keep in mind:

Listen. This is especially important if you are new to the game. Get to

know your audience before you start lending to the conversation. Youwill not only be smarter, but your conversation will be more insightful.

Converse Dont Sell. No one wants to hear a sales pitch each timea conversation is engaged. Tweet about relevant topics, news in theindustry, tips in the tradeif you sound smart and have interestingthings to say, clients will naturally gravitate.

Stay relevant. Its way too easy totake your conversations inadirection that is unnecessary. Keep your followers expectations inmind (they follow you for a reason) and make sure your tweets stay

relevant to the brand.Be helpful. Your tweets need to offer people something whether itsinformation or entertainment. Take the time to answer questions, solvean issue or provide feedbackbeing helpful will pay itself forward.

In addition to ensuring that your Twitter promotion follows Sweepstakes LotteryLaws, Twitter has extended a set of guidelines surrounding their platform. Theseguidelines make sure that your followers dont violate any of Twitter's rules:

Discourage the creation of multiple accounts. The Official Rulesshould clearly disclose that the creation of multiple accounts to gainadditional entries will not be tolerated.

Do not encourage the repetition of posting the same Tweet

to gain additional entries. Posting duplicate, or near duplicate, updates or links is a violation and jeopardizes search quality. The OfficialRules should set a clear rule stating that multiple entries in a single day willnot be accepted.

Have users include an @reply (along with a hashtag) in theirTweet.By doing this, you will be able to clearly access all entries receivedin the promotion. Just doing a public search may not be enough andsome entries may be filtered.

Encourage the use of hashtag topics that are relevant to the

Promotion.Requiring users to add your hashtag to totally unrelatedTweets might cause them to violate Twitter rules.

Engage a qualified promotions agency that knows what theyare doing. Not only is it important to understand Sweepstakes LotteryLaws, but actually having a clear understanding of the Twitter platforms iskey. When you successfully combine the two worlds, a beautiful thing canhappenclient happiness.
