Conference Review: Thailand’s Food Regulation Landscape A t the 21st Food Innovation Asia Conference 2019 held on 13 June, the Food Science and Technology Association of Thailand (FoSTAT), along with the Agro-Industry Academic Council Association (AIAC), Khon Kaen University, Suranaree University of Technology and AOAC Thailand Section, launched a discussion on the future of food innovation to boost health and wellness in Thailand. The day-long conference aimed to highlight innovation as a key growth strategy for the food industry, not only in Thailand but Asia as a whole. The emphasis was placed on food safety and security, green food processing, and how big data is being adapted to meet the demands of the future food value chain. As an important networking event, the conference also provided opportunities for researchers and international food scientists from private and public domains to engage in knowledge sharing with members of the Thai food industry. “It is undeniable that consumers today are more aware of their health,” commented Asst. Prof. Dr. Anadi Nitithamyong, President of FoSTAT, in an exclusive interview with the Show Daily team. “They would like to live long and live well. From this consumer- driven perspective, healthy foods or “clean” foods in the food processing and service sectors will increase in demand tremendously in the next few years. At the same time, the government’s campaign for healthier foods—less fat, sugar and salt—is fuelling this trend.” Dr. Nitithamyong continued: “This conference provides a forum for knowledge sharing between the international and local experts. We focus on health and wellbeing because it is a core concern in Thailand and the region. The research shared in this event creates an important dialogue on food safety as well. Students, especially, will benefit from open knowledge sharing sessions like these so they can receive feedback regarding their work from experts in the field. This will help Thailand’s food industry create safer and more innovative foods for the population of tomorrow. “In the next five years, I believe the functional foods section will see tremendous growth. I expect to see more choices in this category, due to research and development currently taking place in categories like protein and dairy. Furthermore, elderly nutrition is also an upcoming trend in this industry; foods for chronic diseases are also on the rise,” she concluded. Health and wellness are common trends in the region but Thailand in particular is embracing them enthusiastically. Due to rising incomes, urbanisation and government-backed health messages, Thai consumers are “increasing their efforts towards self-betterment—be it physically, mentally or emotionally” (Mintel, 2018). Thai food manufacturers and processors can take advantage of this trend to customise their offerings to make them healthier and more nutritious. A student attendee of the conference commented: “The FIAC was very informative. I learned about the significant developments in research and innovations in food science and technology, especially food safety. Specifically, I liked the presentations on innovative food technology and clean foods.” If you’d like to attend Day 3 of the Food Innovation Asia Conference, details are on fostat.org/food-innovation- asia-conference/ 14 June Friday DAY 3 Number Of Visitors On DAY 2, 13 June 14,978 Discover one of the biggest ranges of closures in the Food, Beverage and Industrial markets. Integra: Pasteurisation Technology From Thailand

Innovative Capping Options From UNITED CAPS

G rowing from word-of-mouth recommendations alone, Integra

is an engineering company that is engaged in the design, supply and installation of liquid processing equipment. They cater to the dairy, brewing, drinks, pharma and cosmetics markets in the region. At ProPak Asia, Integra is exhibiting their UHT pasteurisation machine, which ensures safe finished dairy and juice products.

Sumittra Khemthong, Project Engineer for Integra, comments: “The UHT Pasteurisation Unit on display here has a capacity of 7 tonnes per

hour. The machine is fully automated, and is operated through a touchscreen surface. Operators can also remotely turn the machine on and off through Team Viewer on their mobile phones.”

“We are a group of engineers who have worked in process engineering industry for many years and we understand that in order to have a plant running efficiently, manufacturers need good engineering design that can produce reliable output. That is what we strive to provide,” she concludes.

UNITED CAPS offers various innovative, sustainable and user-friendly plastic caps and closures for the packaging market.

The company has released a range of greener solutions—eco-friendly closures that are made from plant-based plastics rather than petroleum-based plastics such as sugarcane which consumes a significant amount of carbon dioxide, leaving a negative carbon footprint.

UNITED CAPS has also developed innovative advanced solutions for the edible oil market. For example, the DOUBLEFLOW closure is a precision pouring instrument which features a unique droplet shape that provides control and security.

The main innovation developed by UNITED CAPS this year are the SMARTER closures. The market for counterfeit goods in the world can amount to US$ 460 billion and the company has developed anti-counterfeiting closures—using holographic engraving and QR+ technology, to protect brands from counterfeits. The holographic nano-engraving integrated into the closure forms an intrinsic and irremovable security feature to provide immediate verification without the need for additional equipment. While the QR+ technology, a combination of a QR code and secure fingerprint helps brands enhance consumer confidence.

With the opening of the new manufacturing plant in Kulim, Malaysia, UNITED CAPS will be able to better serve the Asian market by bringing its solutions closer to their customers. The new facility will focus on solutions for the booming agrochemical and infant nutrition market in the region.

igus Hall 101 BE22 Anritsu Infivis (Thailand) Co., Ltd. Hall 101 BD01

i gus, the leading manufacturer of energy chain systems and polymer

plain bearings is presenting a range of plastic solutions for the packaging, beverage and food industry. It focuses on providing lubrication-free, maintenance-free and chemical resistant plastic solutions for customers.

“igus is the expert in motion plastics and we have the formula to improve on this material. We can take advantage of the beneficial properties of plastic as is it chemical resistant and corrosion free, unlike metal which corrodes when in contact with water,” said Chadchanon Pathumworachat, Terr itor ies Sales Leader, igus.

One of the highlights at Propak Asia 2019 is igus’ drylin drive technology, featured in the drylin delta robot. This automated pick-and-place robot can be self-assembled and it is self-lubricating, maintenance-free, lightweight and allows users to engineer at a low cost. The delta robot can be used in various applications from belt transfer stations to small parts handling. Sustainable Packaging With Sealed Air

S ealed Air Food Care uses innovative technologies to help food packaging companies create solutions that keep foods fresher and increase

operational efficiency.

“We call ourselves the sustainability company and we showcase various smart, innovative packaging solutions for the food and product industry,” Surendra Soni, Senior Director, Sealed Air FoodCare shared. “Our solutions are driven by our four value drivers—operational efficiency, brand building, food safety and shelf-life extension. We also focus on how to make the world a better place,” he added. Sealed Air Hall 98 AH31

With increasing consumer awareness for the environment, the company is focusing on solutions for sustainable packaging. Each solution has an impact on the environment in terms of sustainability, packaging waste reduction, and food safety.

One solution featured at Propak Asia 2019 is the Cryovac Simple Steps packaging which uses vacuum skin packaging technology to preserve freshness and steam-assisted technology to heat food evenly for ready meals. This vacuum skin packaging technology doubles the shelf-life, which would reduce food wastage for consumers. Furthermore, the extended shelf-life creates new opportunities in distribution for food manufacturers.

Darfresh vacuum skin packaging technology for fresh meat and poultry also helps to optimise transportation costs and retail storage space as more can be packed with lesser volume.

Another packaging technology featured is the shrink back solution, Cryovac Optidure packaging for fresh meat. The technology offers a 30 percent downgauging of shrink bags, without affecting the final end use application. With reduction of packaging waste, packaging footprint production is also reduced. Furthermore, shrink bags helps to reduce retail shrink—weight loss that occurs in a retail outlet during storage, from 10 percent to two percent.

“Propak Asia 2019 represents not only Bangkok, but Asia Pacific as well. This is a good platform to be associated with and we are able to showcase our latest innovative offerings during this event,” concluded Soni.

Light-weight Closures With Better ConvenienceT he last few years witnessed a significant drive

towards reduction in packaging cost for all beverages, alongside improvement in carbon footprint. On the other hand, consumer convenience has become more important as they differentiate between preferred products alongside cost considerations. Not only should beverage packaging now be lighter in weight but packages must also be easier for consumers to open and reseal.

Reducing package weight and costs is important for bottlers selling their products either to discount markets or in countries with low purchasing power. Responding to such market requirements, Bericap has developed an ultralight-weight closure for the 29/25 PET neck finish (Hexalite 29/11 SFB UL2 3T – above left). Compared to the former 30/25 PET neck/closure combination, weight saving is almost 38 percent!

This light-weight closure variant has now been introduced successfully in countries such as Turkey, Egypt, Malaysia and Thailand. I t offers major brands a new initiative for better consumer convenience and achieve their goals towards environmental responsibility.

Another new light-weight closure by Bericap is the Hexalite 29/13 (above right). This offers a superior grip experience for the consumer for easer opening/resealing. The closure weight is only slightly higher compared to the standard Hexalite 29/11 closures.
