  • 2. Why is hand washing important?
    Remove dirt and germs
    Prevent the spread of disease
    Its required, by law, in all service industries (food, retail, schools, etc.)
  • 3. When should you wash your hands?
    Before you eat
    After using the restroom
    After sneezing, blowing your nose or coughing in your hands
    Before handling food
    After any activity that will make your hands dirty
  • 4. Step 1: Wet Your Hands
    Warm water is best if it is available
  • 5. Step 2: Get Soap
    Any kind of soap will work
  • 6. Step 3: Scrub Hands for 20 seconds
    1-1000, 2-1000, 3-1000,.
    If working with children, have them sing the ABCs
  • 7. Step 4: Rinse Hands for 10 seconds
  • 8. Step 5: Dry Hands
    Pat hands dry with paper towel
  • 9. Now that your hands are clean
    Be sure to turn off the water with the paper towel so you dont contaminate your hands again.
    If you have to pull a door open to leave a restroom, use the paper towel on the door handle.
    Throw your paper towel away.
  • 10. What if no soap and water are available?
    You can use a hand sanitizer or alcohol rub.
    The most effective sanitizers have 75 to 95% alcohol.
