EVERYTHING THAT SURROUNDS US IS

MATTER.

Page 3: Propeties of Matter

WHAT IS MATTER?

Page 4: Propeties of Matter

Matter-anything that occupies space and has mass-it is made up of particles such as molecules and atoms-it is generally classified into three basic phases/states: solid, liquid and gas, with plasma sometimes added as the fourth state for scientific purposes.

Strengths Weaknesses

Properties of Matter1. Physical Properties- this can be observed or measured without changing the substance into another substance.2. Chemical Properties-properties that can only be identified when one substance reacts with another substance.

Page 7: Propeties of Matter

Physical Propertiesa. Intensive Properties- properties that depend on the kind of matter regardless of the amount

- whether the amount is smaller or bigger, these properties do not changeEx. density, boiling point, melting point, color, texture, solubility, metallic properties like malleability and ductility, hardness

Page 8: Propeties of Matter

Density- the ability of an object to float or sink in water due to its mass and volume

Page 9: Propeties of Matter

Boiling, Melting and Freezing Point of an object is fixed.

Page 10: Propeties of Matter

Ductility- the ability of metals to be turned into wires.

Page 11: Propeties of Matter

Malleability- the ability of metals to be hammered into thin sheets.

Page 12: Propeties of Matter

Brittleness- the ability of matter to be broken easily.

Page 13: Propeties of Matter

Physical Propertiesa. Extensive Properties- properties that depend on the amount of the matter

- it means that if the amount of matte is small, its quantity is small too.Ex. mass, volume, length, height, area

Page 14: Propeties of Matter

Chemical PropertiesExamples:a. combustion/flammability- the ability to burnb. corrosion- the gradual destruction of metals like

rusting of ironc. oxidation- combination of substance with oxygen

such as the browning of fruits when exposed to the air.

Activity:Identify what property of matter is involved in the following situations. Determine if the property is physical of chemical.

a. The victims of a shipwreck hold tight on their floaters so that they will not sink in the water.
