    Background

till reaping the repercussions of the Asian financial crisis, Indonesia has in recent years

struggled with numerous difficulties ranging from social unrest, political instability, and

serious economic challenges, such as unemployment and poverty, until environmental

threats. To solve those problems arise and help our nation to achieve the Millennium

Development Goals (MDG), proper solutions are needed. In addition, world is changing

fast, making the efforts of developing countries to level up in some areas, more

specifically in economic, innovations and social care much difficult to be delivered.

Moreover, the international relationship has become key point to facing the challenge

that each nation and world has, unexceptionally Indonesia.

Therefore, leadership skills with an ability to define problems, deliver solutions, along with

educational and comprehensive look at a diverse range of pressing issues, and good

negotiation skills are highly needed for ensuring Indonesias future. To create leaders with

characteristics mentioned above, Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN) 2008

provides unique and rewarding experience that will meet the goals.

In addition, until recently, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) has been widely known as

the best university in Indonesia, creating many expertise and producing high-quality

graduates that has been coloring this nations development in almost any sector. With

the global challenges that lies infront, and the hope that Indonesias society uphold

toward ITB as an agent of change, such as promoting innovations in technology and

developing enterpreneurship as well as leading towards solutions for the financial crisis

    and others issues.

The opportunity for ITB delegations to take part in Harvard National Model United Nationalso comes with another opportunity: to observe the best universities in the world. Giving

a deeper understanding of what drives Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of

Technology which has affecting development of United States of America, not only in the

term of technology itself, but also in terms of law, economics, and industry. Both of the

institutions are at the core of what makes United States in its position now. By visiting them

directly, we can learn and observe properly in order to notice what should be done to

bring ITB as a world class university, and more importantly, to deliver innovations and

    solutions needed for this nation.

    HNMUN

Participating in HNMUN has several objectives :

    a. participating gives students the chance to learn about international relations and

experience the challenges diplomats face first-hands

    b. gathering new ideas, information, various international perspectives and critiques,

to develop new solution for Indonesias tomorrow

    c. understanding the global issues, and problems facing by Indonesia and other

    speaker in HNMUN 2008

    f. bring ITB to become the world class university, making ITB in line with best

universities in the worlds, and Indonesia

    g. visiting Harvard university, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology to gather a

deeper understanding of how the best university activities are, along with what

innovations are made in their daily activity campus-life. But most importantly,

knowing factors that make both universities on the frontier of US development.

    h. developing a global network community for Indonesia through the ITB delegations

    on HNMUN

    i. visiting Trump Tower and UN office to get deeper understanding of business

activities in US and international issues.

    j. increasing the leadership skills of ITB students to develop our nation in the future

True to the mission of the United Nations as declared in its 1945 charter, HNMUN serves asa forum in which students from colleges and universities around the world can meet to

discuss the greatest challenges facing the world today, in fields ranging from international

peace and security to economic and social progress and human rights. In this spirit, the

    Why HNMUN

HNMUN strives to ensure that the committees they offer provide an educational and

comprehensive look at a diverse range of pressing issues. Their directors work throughout

the conference to make debate as realistic as possible, so that each delegates get a

sense of the complexities of real-world international negotiation, and, as with the real

United Nations, place an unequalled emphasis on cooperation and compromise rather

than on the supremacy of any one countrys position. In this way, delegates get a

chance not only to learn about current international affairs and to discover and represent

one countrys position, but also how to stick to that position while working with hundreds

    of other delegates.

HNMUN brings to the conference over fifty years of experience and always exhibit the

highest levels of enthusiasm and professionalism both in committees and behind the

scenes. For both Model UN veterans and delegates new to the circuit, HNMUN provides a

    unique and rewarding experience

here are several reasons that make ITB decides to participate in HNMUN :

    a. HNMUN 2008 has the most well informed, up-to-date, comprehensive study guidesand research materials possible. Each delegate is given a solid foundation of

knowledge so that they will have rewarding intellectual experience in committee.

High premium are placed on professionalism and preparedness.

    b. HNMUN is founded only a decade after the creation of the United Nations,

therefore its the oldest simulation of its kind and the product of years of gradual

refinement. It is founded upon a solid tradition but never ceases to innovate.

    c. With over 2,600 participants, HNMUN draws delegates from colleges across the

United States and the globe. HNMUN 2007 attracted delegates from 26 countries.

Their commitment to internationalism breeds a cultural diversity that is considered

one of their proudest achievements, as each new perspective contributes to

    richer debate.

    d. HNMUN is also dedicated to providing a fantastic experience outside of the

    committee room.

more realistic crises, improved social events, expanding guest speakers program, and

    he Conference Structure and Agenda

HNMUN 2008 will provide delegates with a look at the functions and responsibilities of the

United Nations and other intergovernmental organizations by simulating various different

committees within the organization. Each committee will address two topic areas of

international significance, and the wide range of committees offered will give every

delegate a chance to pursue a topic of interest. In addition, HNMUN offers several

continual crisis committees, as well as innovative Non-Governmental Organizations

    program.

From Thursday to Sunday, delegates will meet for six sessions of three or four hours each.

During the first session on Thursday night, the delegates will set the agenda by deciding

the order in which to discuss the two topic areas for the committee. Then, the committee

will move into general debate on the chosen topic area. This general debate will take the

form either of formal debate, following the HNMUN rules of parliamentary procedure, or of

a caucus, where these rules are suspended to allow informal discussion .

Over the next three days, brainstorming and discussion will yield working papers, which

express the opinions of a delegate or a group of delegates on specific aspects of the

topic. As delegates negotiate and compromise, these working papers will form the basis

of draft resolutions, possible solutions the committee could adopt to deal with the

problem at hand. After resolutions are drafted and introduced to the committee,

delegates will debate, combine, amend, and vote on the drafts to pass one all-

encompassing resolution to address the problem.

Beside committee activities, some special events are held to make HNMUN participants

get to know others. HNMUN will provide delegates with the opportunity to take guided

tours of Bostons most famous tourist attractions, and tours of Cambridge and Harvard

    campuses will be offered.

    The Committees

    THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Every member state of the United Nations has a seat in the General Assembly. With 191 voting members, the

committees of the GA let all nations have a voice, and allow large and small countries to compete andcooperate on equal ground. The debate process in GA committees is designed to produce compromise and

consensus by w hich the nations of the world work together to find solutions to complicated problems. Thecommittees of the GA tackle military, political, social, and economic issues through a truly multilateral

discussion. Negotiation and public speaking will be the way to success for delegates who take their seats in the

GA, where no one country, no matter how powerful, can dominate.

    THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL

The Economic and Social Council (EcoSoc) serves as the primary forum for the discussion of economic and

social issues of primary importance to the global community. The issues germane to the committees within the

Council make the incorporation of NGO specialist delegates, faculty and expert guest speakers, and special

    presentations particularly rewarding.

    THE REGIONAL BODIES

Regional Bodies allow delegates to focus onimportant international issues as they relate to particular areas of

the globe. The relatively small size of Regional Bodies committeeslike the 25-member ASEAN Regional Forum

and the 26-member North Atlantic Treaty Organizationgives delegates the opportunity to discuss important

issues in a more intimate setting and allows for greater flexibility in negotiation.

    THE SPECIALIZED AGENCIES

The Specialized Agencies p rovide delegates with the opportunity to combine the experience of traditional

Model UN diplomacy with the challenge of resolving unconventional crises. Each delegate will have a unique

role in shaping these committees and the chance to impersonate some of the greatest personalities in history. Inaddition to the exciting continual crisis committees, delegates in the SA can participate in the present-day or

    historical Security Council.
