Why are we here?• VDOT Summer repaving includes several roads in Springfield

District. Opportunity to review pavement markings and street design. Project limited to restriping existing pavement.

• Opportunity to add bike facilities, connect neighborhoods to transit stations, and improve pedestrian safety

• Low to no cost for the County

Lane Diets

• A Lane Diet is generally described as narrowing travel lanes from a roadway and utilizing the space for other uses and travel modes. Does not involve reducing the number of travel lanes.

• Benefits– Providing transportation alternatives and options

– Increasing safety for non-motorized users– Reduce speeding

• Lane diet– Existing: 68’ curb to curb– One lane in each direction and a center turn lane– On street parking heavily used on both sides of street

• Reallocate space without removing parking

• Proposal includes buffered bike lane

• Project # 23: Spot Improvement • Fix the sharp curve on Burke Road to improve safety.

• Raise profile and provide new stream crossing.

• Modify Heritage Square Drive alignment, and provide adequate sight distance.

• Provide 5' concrete sidewalk on one side, 10' trail on the other, and on-road bike lanes.

• Project is currently in scoping phase. Design work to start Summer 2015.

• Conceptual design underway

• Not proposing to remove travel lanes, so no negative impact to vehicle traffic

What are the next steps?• Gather community input tonight and over

next two weeks– Comment Period: Open until March 13 th

• Redesign plans as necessary

• Design completion: April 2015

• Projects go to construction Summer 2015
