Why are we here?• VDOT Summer repaving includes several roads in Springfield

District. Opportunity to review pavement markings and street design. Project limited to restriping existing pavement.

• Opportunity to add bike facilities, connect neighborhoods to transit stations, and improve pedestrian safety

• Low to no cost for the County

Bicycle Master Plan



Lane Diets

• A Lane Diet is generally described as narrowing travel lanes from a roadway and utilizing the space for other uses and travel modes. Does not involve reducing the number of travel lanes.

• Benefits– Providing transportation alternatives and options

– Increasing safety for non-motorized users– Reduce speeding

• Lane diet– Existing: 68’ curb to curb– One lane in each direction and a center turn lane– On street parking heavily used on both sides of street

• Reallocate space without removing parking

• Proposal includes buffered bike lane

• Optional sharrows from Burke Lake Drive to Meadow Brook Drive

• Bike lane from Meadow Brook Drive to VRE Station

• Optional sharrows from VRE Station to Rolling Road

• Add bicycle wayfinding signage

• Trail currently exists from Ridge Ford Drive to Rolling Road

• Project # 23: Spot Improvement • Fix the sharp curve on Burke Road to improve safety.

• Raise profile and provide new stream crossing.

• Modify Heritage Square Drive alignment, and provide adequate sight distance.

• Provide 5' concrete sidewalk on one side, 10' trail on the other, and on-road bike lanes.

• Project is currently in scoping phase. Design work to start Summer 2015.

• Fairfax County Park Authority Project• Connects Burke Lake Road to Burke Road

via Pohick Stream Valley Park• Connects additional neighborhoods to Rolling

Road VRE Station• Design, NEPA documentation, and state

Where are we in the Process?

• Conceptual design underway

• Not proposing to remove travel lanes, so no negative impact to vehicle traffic



What are the next steps?• Gather community input tonight and over

next two weeks– Comment Period: Open until March 13 th

• Redesign plans as necessary

• Design completion: April 2015

• Projects go to construction Summer 2015
