INTRODUCTION

A language has always been a decisive tool of Communication. From the very beginning of our history, we have known that living in a society means, among other things, need of communication.

Along the history of the mankind, the indispensable tool to understand and to be understood is called Language; this is why anyone who wishes to spend his or her life among humans needs to learn the language which is known by the one to whom we wish to address.

Nevertheless, all over the world, we have a great number of languages spoken by so many groups of people (cities, regions, countries, and so on), that it would be impossible to know or to learn all of them. This is the reason for us to decide to learn just some of those languages which are mostly spoken by people with whom we wish to work or, at least, to interact.In our world there is a language which has become a kind of an international language because this one is spoken almost everywhere. This language is called English.

Nowadays, wherever it is necessary to consider a foreign language as part of the list of courses or subjects to be studied to become a professional, they almost always choose English; the reasons are widely known, so I think it would be useless to insist on talking about it.

Talking about the Tourism Field, I am convinced that all of those who expect to work in tourism have to know, at least, the English Language. It would certainly be excellent to learn more foreign and native languages. The more languages one may know, the better chances he or she will have to communicate with a wider and wider varied range of people.The content of the text I decided to include in the following pages is very limited; but, at the same time, it is a good and a challenging reason for the readers to start a serious and intensive study of the topics considered here.

The text is divided in units. Each unit introduces one grammar topic by means of a very short dialogue called Basic Conversation. Here, the goal for the student is to get familiar with different sentences which express complete ideas which are combined in such a way that they can form complete conversations. The next part is called Grammar Structure which is nothing else but the explanation about how it is built and how it works. Then, we have Pattern Examples. In this part the student is asked to notice, analyze, and learn how the Pattern works and practice pronunciation and fluency. The fourth step is called Response Exercises. Here the student is required to understand questions and get logical answers built with his or her own words. Afterwards we have Reading which is a step to show and teach the student how to make a narrative out of a conversation, and Conversation in order to give the student a chance to use the grammar topic taught in realistic dialogues. Finally, we have Additional Activities to cover the related topics which are necessary to be reviewed if any.Through these steps, I am convinced, if covered appropriately, that the student will easily get the basic mastery of each grammar topic introduced here. Nevertheless, the student must never forget that learning is a result of a very hard, serious, and constant practice. In order to be successful, a student should always do his or her best.

Let us not forget that study and education are the key to freedom and, therefore, to happiness. Besides, we have to bear in mind that, in order to offer a better and better professional service, we have to get used to working towards a better and better preparation. The sky is the bound, and responsibility is the way.

Finally, I invite the reader to study the text, learn the text, and, if possible, make a better text in order to help the next students to have a better knowledge about the topics and to cooperate with the development of the field.

GRAMMAR STRUCTURE 1The Present Perfect tense is formed by the auxiliary HAVE or HAS and the Past Participle of the Head Verb. This tense is used to refer to:

a. How often an action is repeated.b. An action which started in the past and still continues in the present.(There are other uses of this pattern, but they are not considered in the Syllabus).

The frequency adverbs are used to express approximately how many times a customary or habitual action or condition is repeated.

The students have often practiced English.

She has always succeeded.

We have sometimes committed mistakes.

GRAMMAR STRUCTURE 2The Simple Past tense is formed by the auxiliary DID and the simple form of the verb in Negative statements and Questions, and by the Preterit of the head verb in Affirmative statements. This rule dos not work with BE and the MODALS. This tense is used to refer to:

a. An activity which happened sometime in the past.

(There are other uses of this pattern, but they are not considered in the Syllabus).

She agreed and told him that the plane had taken off at eight oclock. It means that they have been flying for about one hour. Lady told Joe that she had never taken a trip like that. Joe asked her how often she had traveled by plane, and she replied that she had never done it.CONVERSATION

GRAMMAR STRUCTURESTILL indicates that a situation continues the same as before. It is used in affirmative and negative statements and in questions. It goes before the verb and after BE.ANY MORE is the opposite of still. It indicates that a situation which used to exist does not exist now. It occurs only at the end of a negative statement.

ALREADY indicates a time sooner or earlier than expected. It is used in affirmative statements and in questions. It occupies the same position as still.

YET indicates a time later or longer than expected. It is used in negative statements and in questions. It is placed at the end of the sentence.PATTERN EXAMPLES

GRAMMAR STRUCTUREWe call Reported Speech to the way we communicate someone an idea told by someone else. When we need to change a direct quotation into an indirect one, we have to use the past tense of the verb (word or phrase). When changing sentences with modals from direct to indirect quotation we have to consider that:a. Can becomes Could.

b. Will becomes Would.

c. Shall becomes Should.

d. May becomes Might.

e. Must becomes Had to or remains Must.

f. Should remains Should.

g. Ought to remains Ought to.

(There are other uses of the modals, but they are not considered in this part of the Syllabus).

Almost all of them are phrases that, in some ways, must not be changed to express the idea correctly. The most common ways to express a request are:

(Note that almost all of these expressions related to requests include a Modal; so, it is necessary to check them).

* In formal English Can is not used to express a request, although many authors consider the contrary.

PRACTICEThe point here is to let the students have a complete practice of all the grammar topics taught so far. The students are going to be asked to work in couples a conversation which must include Simple Past, Present Perfect Simple, Present Perfect Continuous, Frequency adverbs, For, Since, Ago, Still, Yet, Already, Any More, reported speech, and requests. FIRST GRADED PRACTICEThis examination called First Graded Practice will be given in the second class of the fifth week and it will consist on both a written quiz and a dialogue in couples.UNIT 2 LESSON 6BASIC CONVERSATION

GRAMMAR STRUCTUREThe verb BE becomes AM, IS, and ARE in Present Tense. AM is only used with the first singular person; IS, with the third singular persons; and ARE, with the second singular person and plurals.In Basic English, BE is used to express some situations which are expressed by different verbs or by no verb at all- in other languages. Use BE to tell about: Profession, Trade, Occupation, Nationality, Age, Characteristics, Condition, Size, Shape, Color, Place, etc.To refer to the existence of whatever is mentioned in the rest of the sentence, BE usually follows THERE. The form of the verb agrees in number, singular or plural, with the subject, which comes after it. Most simple statements beginning with the expletive THERE require a place expression to complete them.

T: Because it is a rule, since it is run by a private company.GRAMMAR STRUCTUREThe Simple Present Tense is not at all simple since it requires the use of S-FORMS as well as SIMPLE FORMS (the ones you find in a dictionary). It does not express present activity, either. Sentences with present tense verbs express repeated, customary, and habitual actions. They also express general truths.

To make negative statements or questions, we need the AUXILIARY DO or DOES, depending on the subject of the sentence. The forms of DO combine with NOT into contractions.(There are other uses of DO, but they are not considered in the Syllabus).

Dates are expressed in a very singular way. Joe and Lady thought that it was time to have lunch and they decided to look for a restaurant. When they were entering Misky restaurant, a host met them at the door. Joe asked for an outdoor table, but the host apologized and said that since they had a very small area, they only had indoor tables. Then, he asked the host to show them the way to the non-smoking area. The host got embarrassed because he had to apologize again, but he managed to say that they only had a few tables and they werent set in areas.

They decided to take a table next to a window because Lady said that they had a beautiful view from that table. Joe also liked the place because they had a very fresh atmosphere. They were talking when they were interrupted by the host saying that he was ready to take their order.

J: Mike, your accent is very singular. Arent you from here?W: Yes, I am, Sir. But my father was working for DHL and when I was 5 years old, his company sent him to work in the US.

L: I understand it. Your parents had to take you with them to live in the States, right? W: Yes, Sir. I have lived among Americans; that is why I learned their accent.

J: Ok Mike. Let me tell you that you remind me my father. His name is also Mike.W: Oh! What a coincidence!GRAMMAR STRUCTUREPossessive adjectives are words that qualify nouns and, at the same time, express possession. In English we have 7 possessive adjectives and all of them always occur before non-qualified nouns. They may also occur before another adjective which might qualify the referred noun.(There are other forms to express possession, but they are not considered in this part of the Syllabus).
