Trinity School is a caring and supportive
environment which provides exceptional
opportunities. The quality of teaching
allows them to excel in many areas as
they develop intellectual curiosity and
independence of mind, concern and
respect for others, a sense of compassion
and high standards in a range of interestsIndependent Schools Inspection Report
Trinity 2012 Prospectus (FINAL) 16/12/11 11:23 Page 2
Trinity has an excellent reputation for combining
an intellectually rigorous and challenging
academic environment with outstanding pastoral
care and support. The School’s aim is:
“The rigorous pursuit of excellence balanced
by compassionate concern for individuals.”
Our approach provides a positive and friendly
atmosphere in which pupils thrive, not simply by
achieving excellent examination results, but also
by developing a wide range of interests and skills
outside the classroom.
Although each child will have a unique journey
through the School, we want to inspire everyone to
take advantage of the breadth of opportunities
available both inside and outside the classroom.
We are fortunate to have superb facilities and, more
importantly, excellent teachers and support staff,
dedicated to working together to offer the balanced,
all-round education to which we are committed.
Being a school just for boys up to Year 11 means we
can concentrate on boys’ interests and on building
their confidence and self-esteem. We can design
teaching that specifically meets boys’ learning
needs and preferences, but in many areas we also
work with our local girls’ schools, allowing the
boys to benefit from this social and academic
interaction. The introduction of girls into the Sixth
Form in 2011has proved a hugely positive step,
enabling us to offer, to both boys and girls, all the
educational and social advantages of a co-
educational environment.
I want to ensure that all our pupils acquire not only
new knowledge and skills, but also a strong set of
values so that when they leave Trinity, parents can be
proud of their child’s achievements at school and be
delighted by the sort of person they have become.
I would very much like to welcome you to the
School so you can experience for yourself Trinity’s
positive, purposeful and friendly atmosphere.
Mark Bishop

Trinity School is part of the Whitgift
Foundation, founded in 1596 by John
Whitgift, Archbishop of Canterbury.
His legacy provides the School with
outstanding facilities and an
exceptionally extensive range of bursaries
and scholarships, allowing pupils from a
wide variety of backgrounds to benefit
from an education at Trinity. It also
established the Christian foundation on
which the School is built. Today, Trinity
warmly welcomes those of all faiths and
of none, although Christian values still
inform and underpin all we do.
We value each pupil as a unique
individual and work to ensure that all
relationships in the School are based on
mutual respect. We expect high
standards of behaviour, founded on
personal responsibility and self-discipline
combined with genuine concern and
compassion for others.
The outstanding pastoral care offered at
Trinity means that children will receive
carefully considered advice at every stage
of their school career, tailored to his
individual needs and circumstances.
Your son or daughter will have a Tutor,
someone they will see at least twice a
day, who will listen, advise and help
them to make and understand their own
choices. It is our firm belief that
confident and happy individuals are
those most likely to achieve their full
personal and academic potential.

We aim to make the transition from one
school to another as smooth and enjoyable
as possible for boys and for parents.
As well as a highly experienced pastoral
team of teachers, older boys and girls are
closely involved in mentoring new pupils.
Together, they make sure every boy settles
in to school life quickly and feels that he
is part of Trinity. With relatively small
year groups teachers soon get to know
every new boy and can quickly start to
help your son reach his full potential,
both in terms of his studies and how he
develops as a person.
Trinity places great emphasis on an all-
round education where boys can develop
intellectually, socially, physically, morally
and spiritually. Boys are encouraged to take
part in as many sports and activities as
possible, try new hobbies and explore new
interests, thereby developing their talents,
their sense of self and their confidence in
themselves and their fellow pupils.

Every pupil at Trinity enjoys the very
best in academic teaching across a full
and balanced curriculum. Examination
results rank the School as one of the
top schools in the country, and with
highly qualif ied and motivated staff,
many students emerge as some of the
top academic performers in the
country. Trinity places great emphasis
on providing pupils with the skills to
learn for themselves and to think
critically in an intellectually vibrant and
academically stimulating atmosphere.
We also aim to foster the individual
resourcefulness and entrepreneurial
skills that will allow our boys and girls
to f lourish in the highly competitive
modern world.
Academic clubs ranging from literature,
philosophy and debating to astronomy
and electronics allow students to take a
lead in promoting an atmosphere that is
scholarly and openly enthusiastic about
learning. Trinity has built and continues
to enjoy strong cultural and academic
links with other countries and regions,
including China and Eastern Europe.

Trinity’s Design & Technology and
laboratory facilities are modern and well-
equipped. Every department in the
School uses the most up-to-date ICT
facilities, in addition to our six dedicated
computer suites. Our extensive library
provides a valuable academic resource
and an environment which encourages
independent, scholarly work. The School
has developed its own portal which
allows staff and pupils access to our
intranet and its extensive range of
materials at all times, whilst the internet
offers a gateway to many other higher
education resources around the world.
Trinity recognises ICT as an important
part of learning and it is incorporated in
every pupil’s education across the
curriculum from an early age, rather than
being treated as a separate skill. Students
at Trinity become confident, competent
computer users, more than ready to make
the best use of the latest technology in
their studies and their future workplaces.

The School is rightly proud of its
reputation for sporting excellence. Top
level coaches - both current and former
internationals - have enabled an
impressive number of pupils to be
selected to compete at national and
international level. Rugby, cricket, hockey
and football are the major sports for
boys, whilst hockey and netball are the
main team sports for Sixth Form girls. The
School’s sports programme is extensive
and across all sports all students have
access to high quality coaching from the
start of their time at school.
While many Trinity pupils excel at sport,
it is important to remember that every
student, no matter what their ability, is
encouraged to take part in and to enjoy
as wide a range of sports as possible.
The facilities at Trinity are superb and
include extensive playing fields
surrounding the School, two all-weather
astroturf pitches, five indoor cricket nets,
a 25 metre six-lane swimming pool, an
indoor climbing wall, five squash courts,
four multi-purpose all-weather surfaces
for 5-a-side football, tennis and
basketball, two large sports halls and a
fully equipped fitness centre.

For many, Trinity offers their first
experience of learning an instrument,
singing in a choir or performing on stage.
More than five hundred individual music
lessons are timetabled each week and,
supported by highly experienced tuition,
many pupils have gone on to become
accomplished composers, conductors
and musicians.
Students can discover and take part in a
variety of musical forms from choral to
classical, from jazz to rock. Our choirs
and orchestras enjoy a worldwide
reputation and perform frequently at
leading national and international events
and venues. The renowned Trinity Boys
Choir is regularly booked to sing in
professional engagements at
Glyndebourne, The Royal Opera House,
The BBC Proms and overseas. They have
recently performed with a variety of stars
on prime time national television
programmes including The Royal Variety
Show and The One Show.
The Mitre Theatre is a dedicated theatre
space providing the flexibility needed for
staging both large scale and studio
productions, whilst the Trinity Concert
Hall is equipped for use as a
professional standard auditorium.
We have thriving Junior and
Senior Drama Clubs
performing plays regularly,
often in conjunction with
local girls’ schools and
Trinity Old Boys.
For pupils who prefer a
more behind-the-scenes
role, our purpose built
TV studio offers
opportunities in
scriptwriting, film-
making and other
technical aspects of
performance art.

”Creative expression is an important
aspect of any well-rounded education.
Trinity has one of the best-equipped Art
departments in the country. Traditional
skills and techniques are taught across a
range of disciplines including pottery,
sculpture, painting and drawing - all in
purpose-built studios.
Alongside the traditional, we also
incorporate the latest technology with
our photography studio benefitting from
a state-of-the-art digital editing suite.
Our creative facilities are extremely
popular, with many students using them
during their lunch break or after school
to develop their interests and pursue
their own projects.
To provide pupils with a valuable insight
into the life of a professional artist, Trinity
supports artists-in-residence and has
regular exhibitions in its own outstanding
gallery space. The result is work of
remarkable quality, and boys and girls
may go on to study Art, Photography and

Trinity pupils have an incredible array of
opportunities to travel the world
throughout their school career for
academic, sporting, cultural and personal
benefit. There are annual language
exchange visits to Beijing, France, Germany
and Spain, and regular departmental visits
to, for example, Geneva, Rome, Vienna,
New York and Tunisia.
There are also frequent sports tours as
far afield as Australia, Fiji, the Caribbean
and South Africa.
Closer to home, academic trips are
organised for every year group, every term.
Consequently, pupils can benefit from a
huge array of experiences throughout
their time at Trinity.

Learning Beyond the ClassroomAt Trinity, a first class academic
education is only the beginning of what
your child can expect. As well as
offering a wide choice of subjects at all
stages of the School, we focus on
helping every pupil develop as an
individual, in a friendly, caring
environment where self-discipline,
integrity and a good-humoured
willingness to be a part of a team are
constantly and consistently encouraged.
Above all, our aim is to give your child the
confidence and skills they need to be
happy and successful, both while they are
with us and throughout their lives. To
complement learning, the School aims to
develop a sense of adventure, as well as
cultural and social awareness. There are
numerous clubs and societies, often run
by the pupils themselves, to satisfy a wide
range of interests such as sub-aqua,
ecology, bridge, creative writing, chess
and Trinity Racing where boys design,
build and race their cars.

So much learning takes place through
powerful experiences outside
classrooms: encouraging boys to explore
different activities in a variety of settings
is therefore a priority. This includes trips
for the most adventurous such as
camping, trekking, diving and climbing
expeditions. As well as destinations in
the UK, overseas expeditions have
included Canada, Peru and South Africa.
There is an extensive range of outdoor
pursuits as well as more formal activities
such as The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
and CCF, encouraging teamwork,
resourcefulness and the development of
leadership skills.

”Learningto CareTrinity recognises that it has an
important part to play in the wider world
and that we are in a unique position to be
able to give something back to the
community in which we live. Playing an
active part in our community not only has
a positive impact locally, but it also gives
students a wider perspective of their
individual responsibilities to society.
Through assemblies, Religious
Education, Personal and Social
Education and a range of other subjects
and activities, pupils are encouraged to
reflect critically on their own values and
to develop a moral code.
A particularly
important part of
this is the role the boys
and girls play in the local community
through a variety of activities such
as neighbourhood care projects,
links with local schools, and working
with children with special needs.
Trinity has also developed a strong
relationship with Mtweni School,
situated in an impoverished rural
part of the Eastern Cape and,
through fundraising and visits,
provides on-going financial and
educational assistance.
