Car Park & Loading Bay Description

The car park & loading bay is on a single level with a single entry/exit ramp. The ramp along with fresh airinlet vent shown on the drawing will provide the fresh air inlet

Basis of System Design

A fully mechanical ventilation system compliant with Approved Documents B & F of the current BuildingRegulations and designed in accordance with British Standard BS7346: Part 7: 2006 is to be installed. The system is to be designed to provide smoke control in accordance with BS7346: Part 7: 2006 Clause11 in the event of fire.

The following drawing has been used in the preparation of the system design:

System Overview  Quote Ref: PSBUK1122/11

System Operation

Fresh air will be drawn into the car park and loading bay as described above. Contaminated air will beextracted via four main extract fans mounted in parallel. The fans will be located in the plant room shownon the drawings (top left hand corner of the car park).

CO monitoring will be adopted to reduce energy consumption and to reduce the running costs for day today ventilation by varying the rate of ventilation according to the level of traffic movement.

Daily Ventilation Under “normal” ventilation conditions, air will be drawn through all parts of the car park and loading bay at arate equivalent to approximately 3 air changes per hour and selected impulse fans will operate at low speed.

CO pollution levels will be continually monitored. On detection of CO levels rising beyond 20ppm, additional

impulse fans will operate at low speed to mix and dilute the CO gases for extract via the main fans. Shouldthe CO level continue to rise to 30ppm, the air change rate will increase to 6 per hour.

The main extract fans will vary in speed according the exhaust pollution levels within the car park andloading bay, thereby providing the 3 to 6 air changes per hour.

Fire Condition A fully addressable fire detection system that would be installed using multi-criteria fire detector heads whichwould monitor both smoke and temperature.

On detection of fire, the main fans will operate at full speed increasing the airflow to at least 10 air changesper hour. Selected impulse fans will activate at high speed dependent on location of the fire.

Control System Control of the ventilation system will be via a master control panel located within a compartment separatedfrom the main body of the car park and loading bay. The control panel will incorporate all necessary starters, overloads and control functions necessary to ensure that the ventilation system responds appropriately tothe conditions within the car park and loading bay.

Control of the system will achieved using a programmable logic control system on to which the detailedcause and effect for the ventilation system will be mapped. All functions in relation to daily ventilation and firemodes will be controlled from this panel. A separate wall mounted CO Detection and Smoke Detectionpanels will be installed adjacent to the master control panel.

The panel will contain:• Idec PLC• single socket service outlet protected by a 10A MCB

• Fire override (Run to destruct) where inverters are used.

• Any system fault will be indicated on front of panel and by a 22mm sounder/beacon, which will alsoindicate any service requirement.

A fireman’s override switch will be installed to enable the attending fire service personnel to switch thesystem off if required. The fireman’s switch will be wired back to the main control panel.

Cause & Effect Table

The following table provides a summary of the system function under various environmental and fireconditions within the car park and loading bay.

CO > 20ppmMain extract fans at low speed plusselected impulse fans at low speed 3

CO > 30ppmMain extract fans at mid speed plusselected impulse fans at low speed 6

Fire

Main extract fans at full speed plus

selected impulse fans at full speed. 10

Equipment Rating

All main extract fans are rated to withstand a temperature of 3000C for a period of at least 60 minutes andthe impulse fans 3000C for 120 minutes. All fans are tested in accordance with BS EN 12101-3 to verifycompliance with the time/temperature criteria stated.

The main fans have been selected on a nominal pressure drop, which will need to be confirmed at detaildesign stage.

Attenuation

We have received no information on sound criteria relevant to this project and, therefore, no attenuation hasbeen allowed for in our proposals.

Approvals test employing cold smoke generation to demonstrate the performance of the systemwitnessed by the appropriate regulatory authorities, specifiers and client representatives andcompleted to their satisfaction.

J CablingThe following table provides information on the specification of cable used for theImpulse Ventilation System.

Item Cable Specification

Power cable to main fans Prysmian FP400 or equivalentPower cable to impulse fans Prysmian FP400 or equivalent

Signal cable to smoke detectors Prysmian FP200 or equivalentSignal cable to CO detectors PVC Screened

Please note that we have not included for enhanced cables as referred to inBS7346: Part 6: 2005 as we consider these excess to requirements.

The maximum cable length allowed for from the main control panel to the main extractfans is 20m

K Electrical SupplyThese proposals are based on the assumption that a power supply, meeting the requirements ofcurrent national and local Building Regulations, and terminating within the PSB main control panel.

Please note that the cabling included within these proposals specifically excludes containment unless stated otherwise.Where containment is included, or is provided by others, it is based upon all fan cables being laid within cable trays.Should cables trays be inverted additional costs will be incurred due to the additional labour required, and we reserve theright to adjust our price accordingly.Similarly our quotation includes for the running of cables via the most practical and shortest routes. Should the installedcable trays take diverse routes to the locations of the respective equipment then additional costs will be incurred due tothe additional parts and labour required, and we reserve the right to adjust our price accordingly. Please note that we doNOT include for “clipping” cables directly to the soffit or walls.
