What is a mental disability?
• In the Oxford dictionary, mental mean, “of or relating to the mind,” and disability means, “a deficiency in an area of something.” So if you put those together, you get…
How does it affect everyday life?• It is not easy to say how a mental
disability affects everyday life. They can be very complex or very simple. For example, Autism just causes you to be slower and not quick on information. But, Alzheimer’s causes you to forget things easily. People with Alzheimer’s can easily get lost and must be closely monitored.
What is PTSD?
• PTSD stands for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD is an anxiety disorder, causing the person to have breakdowns, even long after a tragic event.
• PTSD is caused by a tragic event, such as a car crash, sexual assault, or the threat of death.
Dr. Who cares for these people?
• Most of the time, the family of the victim ends up taking care of them.
• In some cases, nurses are available to help out.
• For PTSD, a Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse is the most common aid
Is it easy to care for these people?• Some diseases are much easier to care
for than others• Alzheimer’s Disease has to be watched
carefully, as it leads to memory loss, and the victim can do serious damage to him/herself or others
• Social Anxiety on the other hand is a lot easier to handle. Occasional therapy and sometimes medication is all that is necessary.
Do caregivers receive benefits?• Nurses receive payment for attending to
these people. • The family of these people often qualify
for therapy
Mental Disabilities in OMM
• In OMM, Lennie has mental retardation. This means that Lennie learns a lot slower than other people. He may not pick up on other skills, and he often has to be reminded of things.
• Lennie ends up killing people and is eventually hunted down and shot.
