With fee reporting changes coming soon, now is the perfect time for a second opinion.

Like many Canadian investors, you may be concerned about the cost of the advice you are receiving from your financial advisor. By mid- 2017, investors in Canada will receive two new reports with details on the cost and performance of their investment account(s). This is excellent news for investors as these new reports will result in more information and enhanced transparency,

Here at RBC Dominion Securities, we support additional transparency about fees and performance or any reporting framework that allows our clients to have a clear understanding of how we are helping them achieve their financial goals. Thanks to the vast resources our clients have access to—such as award-winning research, cutting-edge trading technology, and wealth management specialists in estate planning, Wills, financial plans, business owner planning and more—we are confident in the value they receive for the fees they pay.

Has your current financial advisor been abundantly clear with you about fees? If so, do you feel you are receiving true value for these fees? If not, I’d be happy to offer a complimentary review of your financial affairs. Our fee-based discretionary investment and planning strategies are suitable for portfolios of $1 million or more.

Even if you are satisfied with your advisor, a second opinion can highlight new opportunities and tax-efficient solutions. With a second opinion, you’ve got nothing to lose – and everything to gain.

To help achieve your retirement goals, minimize taxes or boost your investment cash flow, act now to arrange your

complimentary personalized financial snapshot.

Please contact us at (403) 299-6564 or email [email protected] for more information.

Jeff Bergen is a Portfolio Manager with RBC Dominion Securities Inc. Member-Canadian Investor Protection Fund.

How much are you paying for financial advice?

RBC Dominion Securities Inc.

To get the value you deserve for your fees, you need to ask the big questions.

• Do I know exactly what I pay for investment guidance?

• Am I getting good value?

• Do I have access to estate and tax planning experts?

If you answered “no” even once, contact me for a complimentary second opinion on your portfolio – and put my 24 years of experience to work for you.

lying around etc., taking a quick second to toss it into the bins is greatly appreciated and helps to keep our wonderful facility and community as beautiful as ever.

February is AGM month for the DRCA so we look forward to seeing you then. Are you interested in joining the Board or working with a Sub-Committee? We need some additional help to move through 2017 so please contact us at [email protected] to let us know if you can assist or discuss any areas of interest.

February also holds our largest fundraising event in some time. We have been granted a Casino on February 10 & 11. This brings tens and tens of thousands of dollars to our community for our events, facilities and other DRCA community requirements. Volunteering to work at the Casino is a one-time commitment and we have few areas that the time invested brings such reward. And they are fun to work at too! Please help as the Volunteer Board cannot do it all…it takes a community!

Thanks to all of our volunteers past, present and future! We live in a very special neighbourhood!

~ by Jacquie Hansen-Sydenham

Questions?Do you have an interesting (or boring!) question for your DRCA Board of Directors that others may have too? Please email your questions to [email protected] and we’ll try to answer them in an upcoming edition of the Ridge Review.

When in the midst of a cold winter, make the most of it! While the weather has been frigid and snowy, our ice rinks have never been better. The

use of both the hockey rink and the leisure ice has been fantastic and our community volunteers that invest their time again and again, braving the artic like temperatures to clear snow and flood the ice, are true community heroes, who cannot be thanked enough. When you see any of them around the facility, please take a minute to say hello and pass along your family’s thanks for all that they do for our recreational fun!

We hope you and your family have had the chance to check out the new skate change area and benches. We’ve had plenty of great feedback on the new additions! It is being enjoyed by many but there is no magical “cleaning fairy” that comes to tidy up so please remember to pick up after yourselves and if you are at the Rec Facility and see trash

Get outside and enjoy the rink!

Many hardy souls made it out to another Discovery Ridge New Year’s 2017 Day skate. It was great to see so many family and friends gather to welcome the new year.

A huge thank you to our special guests, Canada’s own gold medalists Meaghan Mikkelson and Natalie Spooner (also from Amazing Race Canada), as well as Rebecca Johnston from the Canadian National Women’s Hockey Team. Together they showed us how the great game of hockey is to be played! We’d also like to extend a thank you to Meaghan for letting us see and hold her gold medals from both the 2010 Sochi and the 2014 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games. It was our pleasure having their expertise and community spirit shared at our event.

Their time with us will serve as an inspiration to all.

Dog owners please take note!Responsible dog ownership is an important part of maintaining a happy, healthy dog and avoiding dog-related disputes with your neighbours. Part of being a responsible dog owner is complying with Calgary’s bylaws related to dogs. There are 150 Off Leash Dog Park locations in Calgary. Griffith Woods and the Discovery Ridge community is not one of them so please keep your dog on a leash at ALL TIMES.

As a dog owner, you must ensure your dog does not:• Bite anyone• Injure anyone• Chase, threaten or attack a person or animal• Bark, howl or disturb anyone• Cause damage to property or animals• Scatter garbage

While on a pathway, your dog must:• Be on a leash no longer than two metres• Remain on the right hand side of the pathway• Not interfere with or obstruct other users• You may not cycle, skateboard or in-line skate with a dog on a leash while on a pathway.

How to file a complaint and what happens to itIf you know of a bylaw infraction and would like to report it, please call 311 (from within Calgary) or 403.268.CITY (2489) (from outside Calgary).

Help Prevent CrimePrevent crime in our neighbourhood and lock up your things!

STOPPING CRIME IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY! If we make it hard for thieves to steal maybe they will stop. Please make sure to lock your cars (garage door openers can be used to gain access to your home), homes, arm your security systems, anything to deter crime!

It was a Dilly of a Dip. The 8th Annual Old Guys in Action ‘Calgary Icebreaker Polar Dip' was a great success! Thank you Discovery Ridge for your great support! According to

Old Guys in Action co-founder and DR resident Bernie Potvin, “We had 83 Dipsters in the water out at Elbow Valley…and another dozen Distance Dipsters in far off places like England and Barbados. Most importantly, generous people donated over $75,000 to support the great work of the SA Foundation. It’s a record for us and great news for SAF…and donations are still coming in!” (You can donate at www.calgaryicebreaker.com). Ross Weaver, also from DR, is the other co-founder of Old Guys in Action. “For this year’s Dip we decided to ‘re-purpose’ our grilled cheese costumes from the community fundraiser we did at Javino in November. You can decide if after the Dip we are ‘big cheeses’ or just two ‘soggy sandwiches’. Either way, we are really excited to organize this annual event for the SA Foundation. SAF is a great organization that started in Calgary 25 years ago and now works in eight countries around the world providing recovery programs and housing for survivors of human trafficking and sexual exploitation (and their children). It’s a huge issue, and SAF is making a difference.” Other DR participants included Ann Potvin who positively sparkled in her toothpaste costume…and Ruby Murji of Javino who, participating in her 4th Icebreaker Polar Dip, won first prize (again) for the most funds raised outside the organizing committee. From Weaver and Potvin: “Thank you to Ruby and all the great DR folks who supported her and us Old Guys this year. Now…why not Do the Dip with us next year? “It’s Cool to be Cold.”

The Calgary Board of Education is excited to be building Griffith Woods School for the communities

of Springbank Hill and Discovery Ridge. The new school is expected to open for September 2017.

Kindergarten registrations will be accepted at the schools listed below starting on Jan. 9, 2017.

• Jennie Elliott School, 3031 Lindsay Dr. SW, for Discovery Ridge residents.

• Battalion Park School, 369 Sienna Park Dr. SW, for Springbank Hill residents.

Registration at CBE schools is not determined on a first come, first served basis, so it is not necessary to register on the first day registration opens. However, registering your child as soon as possible helps our principals plan and prepare accordingly for the new school year.

Griffith Woods School will offer kindergarten to Grade 8 in its first year. Current students who live within the new school's designation area and are currently attending Jennie Elliott School, Battalion Park School or A.E. Cross School will

Registering for Griffith Woods Schoolautomatically be transferred to the new school.

Student transfers from other CBE schools or registrations from other school districts will

be accepted after the principal is in place, which will be at the beginning of April. Information on where to take transfer and registration forms will be communicated closer to that time.

We expect that the new school will have enough space for all of the students in its designation area.

The documents that you need to register your child include: the registration form (available at the school or at cbe.ab.ca/registration); your child’s proof of age and legal name (birth certificate or passport); and proof of your address (driver’s licence, offer to purchase, offer to lease or utility bill) to the school. Your preference for morning or afternoon kindergarten can be made at the time of registration and will be considered, but not guaranteed.

For information on the designation area, walk zone and construction status, please visit cbe.ab.ca/schools. If you have questions about kindergarten, we encourage you to visit cbe.ab.ca/kindergarten.

In June 2013, Calgary experienced heavy rainfall that triggered catastrophic flooding described by the provincial government as the worst in Alberta's history. Discovery Ridge has too been

affected.

To prevent or at least minimize the impact in the future, the City of Calgary strives to build resiliency and flood mitigation for the city. Last year, the City conducted public involvement sessions to get residents input and DRCA Environment committee participated in one them.

Due to criticality of the issue to the community starting from this Ridge Review we will be publishing several pieces on flood mitigation, preparedness and actions to be taken during the flood.

In 2015, The City of Calgary undertook a research to assess potential damage that floods could do to the city. Total impact was calculated, which included buildings & interior as well as other adverse impacts: people displacement, business interruption, traffic disruption, loss of life, stress and health effects, loss of recreation, loss of community services, environmental damage and other.

The resulting conclusion was that if no measures are implemented an average annual damage of $170 million per year is to expected based on forecast of floods in the next 100 years.

Since 2013 the City has been implementing number of immediate structural and non-structural measures decreasing the impact by 30%. They included: emergency response plans, improved forecasting, land use regulation, repairing and protecting river banks (one of them was in Discovery Ridge), raising gates on Glenmore Dam, stormwater outfall gates to prevent river backup into communities, improvements to storm and sanitary lift stations, studies of the rivers changes, and erecting of permanent barriers (Bonnybrook, Centre Street Bridge, Heritage/Deerfoot, West Eau Claire, the Zoo).

A more medium- and long-term strategy is now contemplated. Advisory group had been created, which devised several options. In October-November 2016 public discussions were held. In January-March 2017 measures recommendation to the City Council.

Feasible options that are under discussion include structural (building reservoirs, flood barriers) and non-structural measures (policy and land regulations). With them City aims to protection itself from “1 in 100-200 years” flood; 2013 was “one in ~70-100 years”. Cost effectiveness, social/environmental impacts,

enduring nature of solution, reflection of citizens’ perspectives are among the major factors for decision making.

Three structural options:

1. Dry Springbank off-stream reservoir and Bow river reservoir Location of Springbank reservoir - ~18.5 KM upstream Glenmore reservoir. The project has received approval form Alberta government, and now under federal environmental assessment review. Together the reservoir and new gates at Glenmore Dam are intended to be able support 2013-sized flood without overland flooding along the Elbow river.

Bow river reservoir is under conceptual review - no commitment, funding, or location identified for it as of end 2016.

The cost of the option is $2.6 billion, cost-benefit ration - 1.4.

Drawbacks: It is estimated that reservoirs will take no less than 10 years to build.

2. Barriers along Elbow and Bow rivers Most of the barrier locations are conceptual and detailed design has not been undertaken, with the exception of 4 barriers underway.

Barriers – either berms, concrete or metal walls of ~2 meters high.

Cost - $1.8 billion, cost-benefit ration - 1.1. Time to erect – several years.

Drawbacks: length and height of barriers are significant; barriers may fail; esthetical influence; least protection and most physical change in the city outlook. Note: no barriers are along the Discovery Ridge Elbow river part in the conceptual preliminary design.

3. Springbank Reservoir + Barriers along BowDry Springbank reservoir on Elbow river + Barriers from Concept 2 only on Bow river

Cost - $1.01 billion, Cost-Benefits ration - 2.4, best cost benefit ratio.

Non-structural measures include policies, by-laws, land use regulation, building codes, operating procedures, emergency response plans, river forecasting models.

The DRCA will be in contact with the City to monitor further decisions and will inform the residents one new information is received.

Spring cleaning tipsAfter a long winter of hibernating inside, follow these five steps for cleaning your spaces and welcoming spring:

WORK FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. It may seem obvious, but when starting from the ceiling down, dirt is forced downward and reduces the need for you to clean the same space twice. Remove cobwebs from lights and ceiling fans, clean your furniture, and only then clean your floor.

CLEAN YOuR WINDOWS ON THE OuTSIDE. Bring out the garden hose and a sponge and work out the spots and smudges that have accumulated over the winter from snow and dust. If you wash your windows on a cloudy day, the sun won't dry the cleanser before you're finished washing..

MOVE APPLIANCES CLEAN AND VACuuM uNDER THEM. While you're in the kitchen, clean the outside of appliances, clear out the fridge, and wipe off any buildup that has accumulated on the outside of cabinets.

ORGANIzE YOuR CLOSET. Get rid of unused clothes and accessories and organize things according to occasion — work, casual and formal. Make sure you have pieces that are easy to wear and pair well together.

WASH YOuR WALLS, cabinets and trim. Even though your floor may look like it picks up the most dirt, don't forget about your walls. Use a wet sponge to wash your vertical surfaces in sections. If you have particularly tough spots, use a very gentle cleanser diluted with water. Ensure you spot test inconspicuously prior to washing the entire wall to confirm that paint is not affected.

In February, with the celebration of Valentine’s Day, thoughts turn to love and other kind feelings. February 14th is also International Book Giving Day which is a volunteer-led

initiative that aims to get books into the hands of as many children as possible.

Three ways you might celebrate International Book Giving Day: • Gift a book to a child in your life • Leave a book in a waiting room or at a bus stop for children to read (and keep) • Donate a new or gently-used book to a local hospital, shelter or to Calgary Reads Book Bank that helps get books into the hands of Calgary children who have few or none of their own at home.

Our Favourite Book of the MonthThis book is a beautiful way to help children understand their feelings. Borrow a copy from your school or public library and get cozy with your family and talk about and share your feelings.

IN MY HEART: A Book of Feelings by Jo Witek (Author), Christine Roussey (Illustrator)

Sometimes my heart feels like a big yellow star, shiny and bright.I smile from ear to ear and twirl around so fast,I feel as if I could take off into the sky. This is when my heart is happy.

Happiness, sadness, bravery, anger, shyness . . . our hearts can feel so many feelings! Some make us feel as light as a balloon, others as heavy as an elephant. In My Heart explores a full range of emotions, describing how they feel physically, inside. With language that is lyrical but also direct, young children will be empowered by this new vocabulary and able to practice articulating and identifying their own emotions.

Calgary Reads helps children learn to read with confidence and joy. This includes helping children in Calgary to have their own books at home; supporting parents and caregivers to help their child develop literacy skills; and engaging businesses and the community to make reading a priority.

Sharing books and loving feelings!

Mike Ellis, MLA Calgary-West

As this is my first message to you for 2017, I want to wish you and your family a belated Happy New Year! I hope that this year brings much happiness and prosperity to

your family.

Before the legislature adjourned, I put forward a draft of a Private Members Bill – which I called “Serenity’s Law”. This law was drafted about a year ago. Once I heard about Serenity’s story, I recognized the urgency to get it passed. This story is the one where a child died in the care of our Government. If you haven’t already read Paula Simon’s article from November 18th of last year in the Edmonton Journal, I would encourage you to read it. It is not for the faint of heart.

The Private Members Bill would require any adult Albertan

that is aware of a child requiring intervention to disclose that information to police. It is a common-sense adjustment to the current framework and it would help children all around the province. I had hoped that the Premier would allow for this important law to be debated right away prior to adjournment, however she decided not to do so. I am hopeful that when the law comes up for debate it will pass so we can ensure that no cases like Serenity’s are seen again.

I would appreciate your thoughts at any time on matters of concern to you and your family. I can be reached at [email protected] or 403.216.5439.
