MESSAGE

(Continued on page 16)

Usually I never worry about whatI will be putting down in this quar-terly message to you. Somehow, someway, through divine interven-tion I am inspired and I have a topicworthy of your time.

This time I have drawn a blankand the only thing on my mind ispreparing for the onslaught of Year-End Reports I will be receivingfrom every local commandery in thisGreat Order. Right?

By the time you read this, thosereport forms will have made it toyour local president, and your es-teemed secretaries will be complet-ing them once your December elec-tions have been decided. If any ofyou do not have the forms, I suggestthat you contact your Grand Secre-tary and/or your Supreme Subordi-nate Secretary to report the omis-sion and request the forms.

While this is not new, I repeatthat it is vital that they be com-pleted and received by my office nolater than January 15, 2019. Thedata that you provide me is criticalto the preparation of your PerCapita Tax Invoices, which I am sureyou are all anxious to receive. Ifyou have any confusion regardinghow to complete these forms, calland ask for help from your GrandPresident/Secretary. They willoblige you. Be sure to include a copyof your current roster along withthat report.

The Password for 2019 has alsobeen sent to your Local President. He has been directed to share itwith you at your January 2019meeting and not sooner.

I am counting on all of you tocomplete these reports and send acopy, along with your current ros-ter, to both your Grand Secretaryand Supreme Subordinate Secre-tary as soon as possible. Let’s makean effort to get them in and experi-ence a year where no loca lcommandery is fined for not beingin compliance.

Dear Brother Knights, May Jesus Christ, who is always

present to our every need, be withyou!

One of the themes that reso-nates in scripture is faith. If we liveour lives based on faith, so much canhappen and even our spiritual livescan deepen. Maintaining faith inour lives can lead us to the fulfill-ment of eternal life. Praying withsincere faith can also make a changeon our life journey.

There have been many eventsthat occurred in our areas. Thoseevents include government elec-tions, on-going wars, violence, sick-ness, and personal issues. Some ofthese events are beyond our control, whi le others can be reso lvedthrough prayer, faith, and action.Let us use our faith, and prayer, tomake a change in these areas for thegood.

We will be entering two wonder-ful seasons of grace where faith, hope, and action will engage us toparticipate in. The seasons of Ad-vent and Christmas will call us todeepen our faith in God, and to putour faith into action. Be open towhat these seasons of grace can dofor us and everyone around us.

Always ask God to increase yourfaith, then put it into action. Dothis to glorify him and to mark ourplace in the eternal kingdom.

You remain in my prayers in aspecial way, especially during theseseasons of Advent and Christ Christ-mas. Be blessed.

Happy Advent, Merry Christ-mas, and Happy New Year!

Peace and blessings,

Msgr. Federico Britto

Supreme Spiritual Director

Greetings my dear Brothers.Another year has just about passed, and we continue to push to progressand move our great organizationforward. I wish to thank all the of-ficers and, most importantly, themembers that understood the di-rection I have attempted to lead ourorder. As much as we have pro-gressed to be capable of sustainingthe changes needed to survive andprosper in the 21st Century, we stillhave much more work ahead of us.Fighting within has never resolvedany problems and we need to em-phasize that every member has theconstitutional right to express theiropinion. We may agree, but if wedon’t, we should discuss a commonground for the betterment of ourorganization, just as the Lord taughtus by His own actions. We will dis-cuss some of these issues as we moveforward in the New Year.

At this time I personally, and onbehalf of your entire Supreme Ex-ecutive Board of Directors, wish allof our members and their families,a very Merry Christmas and ahealthy and prosperous New Year. This holiday season should be atime that we thank our Lord forwhat he has given us, but more im-portantly, what we can give to thosein need. As I sit down with my fam-ily to enjoy our dinner for the holi-days, I can’t help but think of somany that do not have a meal, clothing, shelter, and more so, thosewith no family or support in life.We will continue to reach out tothose in need as a family, and wepray that you and your families willjoin us. May God Bless you all, andagain, Merry Christmas and HappyNew Year. May the Lord grant usthe health and strength to practicethe faith of our order ~ FAITH,HOPE, AND CHARITY.

The theme of this year’s Retreatis Let our actions define who we are,as Knights.

The Los Angeles Commanderyheld its annual Retreat on Satur-day, September 29th, at Saint Eu-gene Cathol i c Church LosAngeles. We had a very successfulretreat on Saturday the 29th of Sep-tember 2018. It gets better eachyear and continues to be a very spiri-tually fulfilling experience. Theturnout was also very impressive.

The Retreat was facilitated byRev. Fr. Nwokocha. He started witha brief history of the Knighthoodand the reason the order is calledancient and noble order. Around1118 AD a group of men came to-gether as Knights, they came fromrespected families with importantconnections. The roads leading toJerusalem and other holy sites wereinfested with brigands and muslimraiders that would rob, rape, mur-der or abduct many of those mak-

ing the journey. The Christian rul-ers of the city needed help in pro-tecting travelers. The men hadtaken vows of poverty, chastity, andobedience to the Patr iarch o fJerusalem. And their first task, un-

der the obedience, was to patrol theroads.

The Holy See approved the ruleof their religious community, thepoor brothers of the order of theTemple of Solomon - the KnightsTemplar. The Templars went on tobecome the most effective Christianfighting force in the Holy land fornearly 200 years. Father Nwokochaalso talked to members about thehistory of KSJI and its roots in theState of New York in the 1800s. Andeventually spread to so many partsof the world today, is one of the onlyKnighthood that is worldwide.

The Retreat had a very good turn-out of brother Knights and theLAUX sisters. Father Nwokochachallenged the brothers’ Knightsand ladies to understand what it isto be a Knights. To let our actionstell the outside world who we are. That the choice is ours whether tolet people say “No wonder or I won-der” when they come in contact witha brother Knight. We should en-deavor to let the outsider say Nowonder based on our behaviors andactions, instead of people saying Iwonder how he became a knight. Wemust continue to be Christ-like inour actions.

Brother Nicodemus N. NwudaHistory and Publicity

Michigan Grand CommanderyMichigan Grand CommanderyMichigan Grand CommanderyMichigan Grand CommanderyMichigan Grand CommanderyClosing the Deal: TheImportance of Being Ready

For the first time in recentmemory, the Michigan GrandCommandery’s St. Joseph Command-ery #239 will finish the year withmore members than it began with, and isn’t by accident or luck. TheDetroit Regiment’s efforts to recruitnew members in a deliberate, mean-ingful way has grown the audience ofthose who know the Knights, what werepresent, and what we do signifi-cantly. The three new members ini-tiated into the Commandery in 2018are all from this pool, men who hadn’tknown of the Knights before and, when they learn about our order, wereinvited to join.

The bridge among our perspectivemembers from enthusiastic interestto receiving the first degree, though, can be too far. This is a place wherewe can have a real impact immedi-ately and with very little effort, andwithout pestering a perspective mem-ber with phone calls and repeatedattempts to re-engage. Follow thishandful of guidelines the next timeyou’re at a turnout (and every time, Ihope!):

1. Always have applicationsready. If possible, give a blank ap-plication to all of your members turn-ing out and ask them to keep it in-side the uniform’s jacket pocket witha pen. In Detroit, we lose the great-est majority of perspective membersbetween collecting contact informa-tion and following-up through e-mailor telephone calls. With an interested

applicant, there’s no commitment infilling out the application, but it’s asignificant barrier out of the way, right away. With a completed appli-cation in-hand, that’s one fewerhurdle you’re asking an otherwise en-thusiastic new member to clear.

2. Know how your applicantcommunicates. All of Detroit’s newmembers this year find it easiest tocommunicate through Facebook mes-senger. Some men prefer e-mail, whileothers prefer phone calls or face-to-face interaction. As an applicationproceeds through your Com-

mandery’s acceptance process, thiswill be important as you’re keepingyour perspective new member in-formed. Which leads us to:

3. Keep your new applicantinformed through the process. The process to join the Knights isn’tcumbersome—an application, fol-lowed by an investigation committee, then a vote at a regular meeting.Depending on the frequency of yourmeetings, however, this could poten-tially be a two-month process (ormore), so keeping your applicant in-formed as to where their applicationsits is crucial. Aside from remindingthem that their application isn’t for-gotten (and that it is, indeed, impor-tant to us), they gain important in-sight into how your Commandery op-erates—an important step as you seekto bring them into the fold.

Communities that don’t grow willdie, and the Knights of St. John is tooimportant to the future of the Churchand the role of everyday men in theChurch to allow us to stand by idly. Ifyou’re having difficulty with your re-cruiting efforts (or just want a fewmore tips), please reach out:[email protected].

Fraternally,General Dale Gossiaux
