ASCE POLICY 465, ITEM 6ASCE Policy 465 states that the Body of Knowledge (BOK) should be fulfilled by obtaining a Bachelor’s plus either a Master’s or approximately 30 acceptable credits & experience (“B + M/30 & E”).

“B + M/30” represents several different, but related methods to fulfill the formal educational component of the BOK.

Purdue is known for many things. Amelia Earhart planned her last flight while employed at Purdue. We’re known as the Cradle of Astronauts with 23 astronaut alums, including the first and most recent men to walk on the moon. Service organizations have played an important part in Purdue Engineering’s history. In addition to the first Women in Engineering Program beginning at Purdue, the EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) program also began at Purdue. NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) was founded in 1971 at Purdue by 6 engineering students and now has over 36,000 members worldwide.

Purdue is a tier-one research institution with over 40,000 students on the West Lafayette campus alone. Purdue has 3 regional campuses in addition to the main one in West Lafayette. We have the second largest population of international students of any public universities, so it is a very diverse campus with many cultural events and celebrations. The College of Engineering is the largest college on campus, and about 50% of the engineering graduate students are international. Also, the split between the Master’s and Ph.D. student population in Engineering is divided about 60-40.

Living in a small, Midwestern community has many perks. The community is safe and easy to navigate. Many apartments and restaurants are within easy walking distance of campus, and rental rates and utilities are reasonably affordable. The international populations afford Purdue students a wide variety of events, menu choices, and cultural experiences. The Lafayette-West Lafayette bus service is reliable and free with a Purdue ID. With so many organizations on campus, there is something for everyone, from belly dancing to bass fishing, from fencing to the Argentina tango club. In addition, the Black Cultural Center, the Asian American and Asian Resource and Cultural Center, the Latino Cultural Center, the Native American Education and Cultural Center, the Muslim Student Center, and over 28 religious organizations offer students other options for participation.

Unlike many institutions where the tuition and fees are combined, Purdue separates tuition and fees. Tuition is included in the offer of support for Research Assistants and Teaching Assistants; however, some fees are paid by the student. The cost to attend Purdue has historically been an affordable amount; usually it is neither the most expensive not the least expensive among other similar universities. For some schools, the amount paid for Teaching Assistants and Research Assistants varies depending upon the type of assignment, as does the amount paid to a Master’s and a Ph.D. student as an RA or a TA. Civil Engineering current salary rates are $1900 for MS and $2050 for PhD.
