The Christ Candle

Presbyterian Women are committed to a ministry of worship and work based on the understanding that all we do is a response to the glory and goodness of God. The Christ Candle burns as a visual reminder of God’s presence as we acknowledge that we worship God in business decisions we make, the prayers we offer, and the programs we plan. Today, let this light speak to us as recorded in Matthew 5:14-16, as Jesus spoke to the crowd of followers, informing them that they are the light of the world, calling them to let their light so shine that glory may be given to God. We encourage PW to use the Christ Candle as a constant reminder that all we do is done in His name.

The PWP of New Hope Symbol

The dominant symbol on the banner of the Presbyterian Women of the Presbytery of New Hope is a descending dove over the open Bible. This shows the inspiration of the Holy Spirit founded on the Word. Centering their lives on the guidance of the Spirit and the Word, three women, representing varied races and backgrounds, interlink hands to show unity through cooperative effort. The Cross represents forgiveness. The descent of the Dove leads into the crossed keys of the Kingdom of God, which are surrounded by the olive branches of peace toward which all Presbyterian Women work and aspire to achieve.

New Hope Presbytery Presbyterian Women Histories 2016 Bear Grass Presbyterian Church Bear Grass, NC 27892 The Bear Grass Presbyterian Women has one circle (Nossie Lee Beacham) with 12 active members, which meets monthly using the Horizons Bible Study. They meet every month, but instead of Bible study in May, November and December, they have the special programs held in those months. Their missions include the Birthday, Thank and Least Coin Offerings. Other missions are: Children’s Hope Alliance; sponsoring a child in India; collection of toiletries for the Interfaith Prison Ministry; holding a Share Fair event which gave community citizens the opportunity to collect items for free; donated $100 to the Blessings in a Backpack ministry administered by the Memorial Baptist Church, and made a monetary donation to Samaritan's Purse to purchase chickens, a goat and a sheep.

Submitted by Bobbie Hodges, HistorianBethlehem Presbyterian Church Rocky Mount, NC 27803 The number of Presbyterian Women attending our monthly Circle Meeting increased to 16 in 2016. Home Circle member, Alice Hancock Bradley, died on February 5. We collected the Birthday, Least Coin and Thank Offerings and created "Sunshine Baskets" for our homebound in the church and community. We sent over 769 cards, made over 187 visits, sent flowers and served meals to members following hospital stays and the deaths of loved ones. We participated in "Operation Christmas Child", "Toys for Tots," and the "Shop and Share" program for Children’s Hope Alliance. On-going projects included furnishing toys for the children’s nursery, collecting books for the NCDPI’s "Give Five-Read Five" reading program for Coopers Elementary School. The PW took the lead in the fellowship event of Bethlehem’s 100th Anniversary Celebration held in October, decorating the church, creating displays and keepsakes, and serving a delicious meal. Submitted by Sandy Tharrington, Moderator Brookston Presbyterian Church Henderson, NC 27537 The Presbyterian Women of Brookston has one circle with twelve members. We meet ten times per year with an average attendance of seven. We use the Horizon Bible study which is led each month by Candice White of Warrenton Presbyterian Church. We made contributions to Joy Gift, Mission Pledge, Birthday Offering, Relay for Life and Rebuilding Hope. We again gave a $100.00 donation to the Salvation Army instead of taking a needy family. Throughout the year, we remembered the sick, caregivers to the sick, bereaved and nursing home residents of our community and church with flowers, food, cash or transportation depending on individual needs. We continue to support ACTS with a collection of food and cleaning supplies, depending on their needs. The women provide flowers for the sanctuary during the year. With the help of the men, we decorated the Chrismon Tree and the church sanctuary for Christmas. With God’s Blessing, this small group of dedicated women has accomplished much and looks forward to continued service in his name.

Providence Presbyterian Church Angier, NC 27501 Providence Presbyterian Church is blessed to have a multigenerational and diverse membership. This year, we had to say goodbye to special folks who went home before us. We also welcomed new members to the flock. We have enjoyed the use of our new building for activities involving youth, older adults, general membership and community members. This building, housing our Sunday school and a large kitchen, provides space for community programs such as Boy Scouts, Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, Gospel Groups, LOGOS, and Vacation Bible School. Presbyterian Women are involved in many of these community outreach activities. The Presbyterian Women-sponsored 2016 Chicken Pastry Supper & Silent Auction/Bake Sale Fundraiser was conducted to support our mission goals and to help support our mission goals and to help support operation of these facilities. PPC is the home of solid Bible-based Christian education, fun fellowship, bonding across generations, and caring for one another in good times and in bad. Presbyterian Women are at the heart of so many activities at PPC. We are Spirit-led, and ready to serve. God continues to bless us. We strive to be faithful to Jesus, mindful, humble and grateful.

We have five circles and 104 members who actually participated in the monthly PW meetings. Our two general meetings, catered dinners, were very well attended by circle ladies and others. To heighten excitement and emphasize the reason for the spring dinner, drawings were made for "birthday gifts" donated by members of the PW Council. Circles continued to take turns providing lunch once a month at the Community Kitchen and volunteers also served at the local Women’s Shelter Home Start. Due to the generosity of our members, over $5000.00 was shared through the PW Birthday Offering, Least Coin Collection, UPC-PW Benevolence budget, and circle Christmas gifts. Sharing resources, joys, concerns, time and Bible study are hallmarks of University Presbyterian PW. One of our members, Eileen Weatherly, walked for the 25th year in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro CROP Hunger walk. We honored her with flowers in the sanctuary on April 10th. Nine members who passed away are: Louise Behrman, Betty Caldwell, Sue Kent, Barbara Roth, Sue Wilson, Helen Boatman, Lucie Johnson, Margaret Moore and Phyllis Searle.

Submitted by Anne Bromby, Historian White Rock Presbyterian Church Kinston, NC 28501 The White Rock PW have confronted several challenges during the 2016 year. We lost one of our leaders, Alva McNeal, who was our PW Treasurer and an Elder. In addition to acting in those activities, she was a choir member and choir director. Another challenge that we confronted was how we could better serve our local children in the community with enriching activities. That challenge is still in progress. The challenges we’ve met are that we have continued to Celebrate the Gifts of Women, portray Women of the Bible by inviting women from the community. We thank the Lord for our member who celebrated her 100th birthday. She was awarded a Lifetime Honorary Membership Pin. We have started a Scholarship Program in her name. We are so thankful for the work that this group does.

Minutes of the 2017 PWP Spring Gathering April 8, 2017

The Annual Spring Gathering for Presbyterian Women of New Hope Presbytery was held April 8, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church in New Bern, registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the program ending around 12:45 p.m.

Sharon Godard, PWP Moderator, called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. at which time the program began with Carole Koi, Spiritual Enrichment leader, lighting the Christ Candle and opening with devotion and prayer.

The PW Moderator of First Presbyterian, Nancy McAden, gave the welcome, followed by the invocation by the Rev. Whitney Bayer.

Those taking part in the program and business were Sharon Godard — recognition of guests and the PWP-CT; Mary Watson — Litany of Purpose; Barbara Nellis —In Remembrance; Janice Smith — recognition of Honorary Life Memberships, at which time, a surprise was in store for Sharon Godard as she was presented with the HLM by Janice.

Mission speakers were Renée Overton, representing Church World Service and Lori Fees, representing Children’s Hope Alliance.

Because the church is celebrating its 200th anniversary, member Sally Maestripieri, dressed as 1700s Sarah Webb, gave a brief history of the women who participated in the founding of the church.

Business reports were given by Sharon G., Sharon Fairchild, Karen McCauley, Millicent Fauntleroy, Martha Strayhorn, Frances Turner and Delores Johnson. The roll calls were led by area representatives.

The installation and recommitment of the PWP-CT was administered by Carol Winkler, Moderator of PW Churchwide. The position of moderator was passed from Sharon G. to Millicent F.

The keynote address was presented by Carol Winkler at which time she gave information about Presbyterian Women nationwide and shared some of her experiences.

The communion was served by intinction led by the Rev. Whitney Bayer.

The Christ Candle was extinguished, and departing prayer was given by Carole Koi.

Statistics: there were 95 registered women in attendance with 22 churches represented.

Three display tables were set up for viewing and receiving information from the Resources for PWs; Children’s Hope Alliance and Church World Service.

The offering for scholarships totaled $529.93.

Respectfully submitted,

Delores Johnson, PWP-CT secretary
