Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

Cover PageThe first thing I used to attract my audience is by using my front cover, I did this by using the minimalistic style that my research indicated that my audience wanted. I went with the idea of using a thin font to be inline with the minimalistic style of the magazine, I did however, make the ‘O’ in ‘Motion’ bold so that the potential reader is attracted to my magazine on the shelves. My audience prefer simplicity which is the primary reason why I chose to make my cover simple and not crowded. Another way in which I attracted my audience is that my artists reflect the genre of music (indie/alternative) that my TGM like, their clothing is also based upon what the audience are likely to wear and buy, this will allow them to feel like the artist is similar to them and thus, may draw them in. The price will also attract my audience as, based on my research that is the amount that they would pay for such a magazine. Another element that is used to attract audience is the content, it includes things that they are interested in reading about. The key focus for the magazine is indie and alternative but, I feel as though the ‘indie scenesters’ group is open to various genres, these may appeal to mainstream buyers as well. The way the ‘Mainstream’ group is targeted is by again using simplicity to make the magazine stand out and also there fashion on the artists, some of which will be liked by both of my TMG groups. Based upon research I did in the planning stage. I made the decision that my magazine should use an informal tone. this is because the age range and markets I am aiming my magazine are likely to prefer this tone, it is also the way that they will speak so it may help them relate to the magazine and its content more, which should in turn attract them to it. an aspect that helped me with this designs is that my magazine is for people who are interested in music and it is not a professional magazine.

Contents PageFor the contents page, attracting the audience is less of a focus as chances are they have already been attracted to the magazine by the elements mentioned on the previous slide. I therefore believe that the focus shifts to keeping the reader interested in the magazine so that they keep reading. I believe that my magazine’s contents page does this due to the consistency in the design and layout, it allows the reader to be able to easily navigate and gives them a more complete experience. I have also used artists that are modelled based around what the audience like, in order to make them feel as though reading this magazine is ‘for them’.

Double Page SpreadFor the double page spread, as with the contents page, attracting the potential readers is less of a key focus. However I have a firm belief that it is important to maintain the same visual style as the other pages, this is completed partially by the black bar that runs along all pages in the magazine including this one. This gives a consistent element for the readers to look at and instantly recognise that the magazine is the same. Again, as with the other pages the models are dressed based upon what the audience likes and will therefore make it easier for them to relate to the artist and encourage them to continue reading.
