What Another Study, What Do I Do Now? SJust a few weeks ago it was reported that maybe whole milk was best after all. I also get confused, is
coffee good this month? Now, there are reports that process meats and possibly red meats cause
cancer. These medical reports always seem to get traction until another study is completed.
In TOPS we know that moderation is the key. But what can we do to cut through all the
information that is out there. How can we stay on track and not get confused with all these theories?
On the TOPS website in the Members Area there is a link to the Krames Library. This site
allows for a medical Q & A session that has extensive resources with the most up-to-date medicalinformation.
What I like about this resource is that it clemly lets you know that the information provided is foreducational use. Too often people react quickly to the latest fad or will take something said by acelebrity as gospel. The Krames site reminds us we should always consult our healthcareprofessionals for sound medical advice. We are all unique individuals and we should get the one onone care we deserve.

A message from Area Captain, Pat Smith who is celebrating 25 years as Field StaffWhen Rick asked me to write about my twenty five years as Field Staff and the changes I
have seen over the years, my mind went to the quote, l)'The rnore things change the more theystay the same"by Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr. He was writing about the politics of his time.I guess so am I?
Thinking of the changes I have seen I can't help but remember the Field StaffI have workedfor and with. There have been several TOPS Presidents, fi.ve Regional Directors, four Coordina-tors, and eleven Area Captains. Esther Manz was the current president and chairman of theboard when I became an Area Captain on June 1, 1990.The rule changes are more than I can remember, but include KlW, (KOPS in waiting), GEM,using a members highest recorded weight for their starting weight, allowing members to be-Iong to other weight groups, and term limits for offi.cers to name a few. That Iast one comes andgoes.
I can't think of the changes in TOPS without thinking of the changes in me and my familyduring those many years. When I began I was a mother of four trying to raise three of thosechildren who were still at home. I also was a grandmother of two and beginning to experiencethe empty nest syndrome. During the years, my children joined the service, went overseas, andmoved far away, graduated from high school and two from college. I also went to college andgraduated with an associates and a bachelor's degree, and moved several times. I finally got aposition as a teacher in Waldoboro and bought a home there. I now have frfteen grandchildrenand six great grandchildren. I can show you pictures.
However, when I remember back over the twenty five years, it's not the changes that come tomy mind; it's what has stayed the same. It's what has kept me in this job for twenty five years. My chapters, workshops, rallies, and SRD's. Because that's where the members are, and it isand always has heen the members that have kept me in TOPS. I cant even begin to explain thejoy I've felt watching you reach your goals, helping you to become what you desire to be in life, having that opportunity to guide you, celebrate with you, teach you, honor your successes, andshare your joys along the way.
Though the years when the thoughts of giving up this position have crept into my head, Iwould think of you the members. And remember those from workshops telling me how muchworkshop has helped. Or I would look at one of the many cards or notes or gifts I had been giv-en from someone who was grateful that I had been there for them, and I would put thosethoughts away.
Don't think for a moment that this has been a one way street, it hasn't. Someone said theother day that, D'It's usually the teacher who learns the most.' E Ain't that the truth?Thank you all for loving me and putting up with me for the past twenty five years.
With Gratitude and Love,Pat
