Here are some quotes from our latest Ofsted report:
It is at the heart of the college's good arrangements to advise and protect learners in
relation to radicalisation. Learners' behaviour is good and disciplinary processes are
based on positive behaviours and restorative justice. The college offers a very
supportive learning environment for learners with learning difficulties and/or
disabilities."
“Leaders and managers have developed an innovative and far-reaching strategic
plan. They work highly productively with local, regional and national partners. They
ensure that skills needs are met, and a wide curriculum is developed and well-
resourced, to the benefit of learners across Gloucestershire and West of England
local enterprise partnership areas. They have skilfully built on expertise and
accomplishments from the merged colleges, replicating best practice and
established networks and extending strengths, such as community provision around
Stroud and sports provision in Bristol.”
"Community learning is very good. Learners gain huge confidence and essential
performing and exhibiting skills through the diverse and inspirational opportunities
the college and community partners provide. These include Halloween
performances, art exhibitions in Stroud Museum and the displaying of work in a local
hospital. Learners confidently utilise 'smart' technologies to share work electronically
through 'blogs' and sharing platforms."
“Arrangements for learners to contribute their views and influence developments are
extensive and inclusive. The views of learners and employers were used effectively
to improve teaching and learning, and learners speak positively about the quality of
teaching, being treated like adults, taking control of their own learning and the
respectful atmosphere fostered at the College.”
"Sports provision is outstanding; the College is very successful at local, regional and
national level and even international success is not uncommon.
Learners make a very positive contribution to the College, the local community and
are well prepared to achieve economic wellbeing. Students on all full-time
programmes develop skills that contribute to their future economic wellbeing by
taking part in work experience.
All our full-time learners are expected to complete a minimum of 36 hours of work
placement. The majority of these placements are with external employers. The Work
Placement team support learners in sourcing placements and promoting the many
benefits of employer engagement. The team will ensure that the learners are placed
in safe working environments and objectives are set to ensure learners improve their
employability skills.
Leaders and managers work highly productively with local, regional and national
partners. They ensure that skills needs are met, and wide curriculum is developed
and well-resourced, to the benefit of learners across Gloucestershire and West of
England local enterprise partnership areas.
There is a strong sense of belonging and respect among staff, learners, stakeholders
and the community, since learners enjoy themselves, are successful and speak
enthusiastically about the College and the positive impact it has on their lives.

HIGHER EDUCATION
Commentary
SGS College is one of the largest providers of vocational education in the South West.
Our reputation and standing with the regulators, across many subject sectors, has
propagated and supported the development of our innovative and vocationally
relevant Higher Education (HE) provision. We have worked directly with our validating
partner, The University of Gloucestershire (UoG), to develop a range of degree
courses to address ‘cold spots’ in the higher education landscape of our local area.
Higher Education at SGS has increased over the past three years, developing locally
responsive curriculum in four core subject areas: Sport; Performing Arts; Art & Design
and Creative Industries. However, we also run Foundation degree courses in
Education and Learning and Early Childhood Studies and HNC/D courses in
Computing, Business and Public (Uniformed) Services. Each of our degrees have a
specific vocational focus and some operate in partnership with local organisations (e.g.
our degrees in Zoological Management and Conservation are delivered in the unique
environment of Bristol Zoological Gardens). Our curriculums are very responsive to

their specific subject industry sectors and our teaching staff are specialist practitioners
who remain active in their chosen fields. We offer a combination of full degrees,
foundation degrees and higher national qualifications on a full-time and part-time
basis.
We currently deliver 30 degree-level programmes to over 350 students; support a
further 40 students on higher level apprenticeships and provide over 200 students with
higher level (Level 5 and above) professional qualifications (e.g. Level 5 CIPD HR
Consultant/Partner, CIPS, Accounting, Counselling).
Achievement remains consistently strong with no gaps in success for different groups
of students (e.g. those with a declared disability). The Destinations of Leavers from
Higher Education Survey (DLHE) conducted in 2018 reflected a positive destination
average. The data shows that within six months of completing their course 98.6% of
students were either continuing with their education or in employment. This was an
extremely positive outcome, moving SGS College into the top 10% of all HE
institutions in England for destination outcomes. In 2018-19 National Student Survey
(NSS) Overall Satisfaction results have increased from 83% to 87% on all College
taught provision (enrolled with our University partner), and from 82% to 90% for SGS
registered students (those students who enrol directly with the College). Satisfaction
with the teaching on the course has risen by 4% to 87%; this is 3% above the sector
average. For SGS registered students the result was 91% for overall satisfaction for
teaching on the course. Satisfaction in academic support has improved 7% to 88%;
this is 8% above national benchmark and students are happy with the advice given on
the chosen course of study. These results are amongst the highest in the region.
