Morethan1500students,mentors,andjudgeshaveparticipatedsince2011.
TheBIOMODcompetitionwasbegunatHarvardUniversitybytheWyssInstituteforBiologicallyInspiredEngineering,whichconductedthecompetitionduringtheyears2011to2015.Themissionofthecompetitionwastoinspireagenerationofstudentstolearntoengineerbiomoleculesatthenanometerscale.In2016,BIOMODFoundationassumedmanagementofthecompetition.From2011–2015,theleadeventscoordinatorattheWyssInstitutewasJermaineReid,whowasinstrumentalinmakingBIOMODasuccess.JermaineworkedcloselywithMaryTolikas(DirectorofOperationsandformerBIOMODFoundationboardmember),alongwithAlisonReggio,MaryWozniak,andCaitlinWells.TheBIOMODwebsiteandCompetitionManagementSoftwarewereoriginallydevelopedbyKristianSt.GabrielandByronHinebaugh.TheBIOMODFoundationiscurrentlyrunbyitsboardofdirectors:ShawnDouglas(UCSF),SatoshiMurata(TohokuUniversity),PaulRothemund(Caltech),KevanShokat(UCSF),andShelleyWickham(UniversityofSydney)andissupportedbyRebeccaWheeler(leadorganizer)andMomKeo(volunteer),RobertPierce(legal),andAkemiIizuka(accounting/bookkeeping).ThisyearmarksthefourthtimethatBIOMODisbeinghostedinCalifornia.
