Exercise #1: Sales by City, Job Type and Customer Dashboard

Objective – Create an interactive dashboard that allows you to explore how different

cities, job types, and customers are performing together.

Step 1: Create Sales Revenue pivot table

1. Click on Report List.

2. Open the Start from Scratch template.

3. In the Library, click Text & Utility.

4. Double-click to add the following:

a. Current Selection

b. Report Title

5. In the Library, click Date. It may be at the bottom of the Library because you opened

Text & Utility.

6. Double-click Transaction to add that date ribbon.

7. Right-click on Report Title and select Properties.

8. In the General tab, enter Sales by City, Job Type, and Customer Dashboard in Text.

9. Right-click on the white space and select New Sheet Object > Chart.

10. In the General window, enter Sales Revenue in Window Title.

11. Select Pivot Table for Chart Type.

12. Click Next.

13. In the Dimensions window, look at the list of Available Fields/Groups. Tip: Either

scroll through the list or use Show Fields from Table to narrow down the fields

you want to add as dimensions (the next step has the specific ones we’ll use for this

exercise).

14. Add the following dimensions, label the column, and specify that you don’t want to

see anything that doesn’t have a value:

a. Transactions.Bill Address State.

i. Enter State in Label.

ii. Select Suppress When Value is Null.

b. Transactions.Bill Address City.

i. Enter City in Label.

ii. Select Suppress When Value is Null.

c. Job Type.Full Name.

i. Enter Job Type in Label.

ii. Select Suppress When Value is Null.

d. Customer.Parent Full Name.

i. Enter Customer in Label.

ii. Select Suppress When Value is Null.

e. Transactions.Txn Type.

i. Enter Txn Type in Label.

ii. Select Suppress When Value is Null.

f. Transactions.Ref Number.

i. Enter Txn Number in Label.

ii. Select Suppress When Value is Null.

15. Click Next.

16. In the Edit Expression window that pops up, type the following expression:

a. sum({<$(vExprSales)>}[Transactions.Amount With Sign])

17. Click OK.

18. Enter Sales Revenue in Label.

19. Click Next twice to get to the Presentation window.

a. Tip: If you click Finish to see your chart before it’s fully finished, you can

access Properties again. Just right-click on the chart and select Properties.

Then choose the Presentation tab to get back to this step.

20. Check Always Fully Expanded. This applies to all Dimensions and Expressions.

21. Select Customer in the Dimensions and Expressions list and check Show Partial

Sums.

22. Click Next three times to get to the Number window.

23. Under Number Format Settings, select Money.

24. Click Finish to see your new table. Note that this table will have your own data in it,

so the amounts will be different.

Step 2: Edit existing pivot table to create Sales by City and Job Type bar chart

1. Right-click on the Sales Revenue pivot table and click Clone.

2. Drag and drop the cloned table below your existing table (or any open space).

3. Right-click on the pivot table and select Properties.

4. In the General tab, enter Sales by City and Job Type in Window Title.

5. Change the chart type to Bar Chart. In the Fast Type Change section, also select

Funnel and Block Chart as options.

6. In the Dimensions tab, use Remove to delete some dimensions. Keep only the

following dimensions:

a. Transactions.Bill Address City

b. JobType.Full Name

7. In the Sort tab, select City.

8. Uncheck State.

9. Check Expression.

10. Select Descending.

11. Click […] in the field to expand it and enter the following in the text:

a. sum({<$(vExprSales)>}[Transactions.Amount With Sign])

12. In the Style tab, select Stacked.

13. In the Axes tab, select the Primary Dimensions Label /.

14. Click OK to see your new bar chart

Step 3: Edit bar chart to create new pie chart that shows Sales Revenue for the top 15

customers.

1. Right-click on your bar chart and select Clone.

2. Move your cloned bar chart to an open space.

3. Right-click your cloned chart and select Properties.

4. In the General Tab, enter Sales by Customer in the Window Title.

5. Click the Pie Chart icon.

6. In the Dimensions tab, remove the existing Dimensions and add the following:

a. Customer.Parent Full Name.

i. Enter Customer in Label.

ii. Select Suppress When Value in Null.

7. In the Dimensions Limits tab, click Restrict which values are displayed using the

first expression and show only the largest 15.

8. In the Sort tab, click Expression.

9. Click […] in the field to expand it and enter this expression:

a. sum({<$(vExprSales)>}[Transactions.Amount With Sign])

10. In the Style tab, choose any style for your pie chart. We think this one is pretty cool,

but pick the best one for your business.

11. In the Presentation tab, uncheck Show Legend.

12. In the Number tab, select the expression Sales Revenue. Then set Money as the

Number Format.

13. Click OK to see your pie chart.
