N E W Y O R K C I T Y grant recipients 2008 This summer, 87 teachers from 55 New York City schools are traveling and learning, thanks to a grant from Fund for Teachers. By following their passions, these teachers will be ready when they return to the classroom to help students follow their dreams. Agnes Y. Humphrey School for Leadership Laura Jackson — Science In China, study the habitat and life-cycle of indigenous birds through coursework and fieldwork. Jo Ann Porter — Literacy In San Francisco, take an intensive one-week course in book arts for K-8 teachers for ap- plication to literacy curriculum. All City Leadership Academy Melissa Alvarez — Visual/Performing Arts Study shadow puppet theater in Indonesia through an apprenticeship with a master puppeteer while documenting this rich artis- tic tradition. Astor Collegiate Academy Kim Hummel — Literature/Writing At the American School in London, partici- pate in its Shakespeare and London Theater Program for high school students to pro- totype curriculum for use in urban school settings. Banana Kelly’s School for Learning Through Community Building Carly Reiter — Science Explore two of Bolivia’s unique ecosystems, the High Desert and the Amazone, in order to create a curriculum on global ecosystems. Baruch College Campus High School Carolyn Castagna, Diana Di Rico Literature/Writing In West Africa, study storytelling and literary traditions as vehicles for exploring identity and society. Danielle McDonald — Visual/Performing Arts In Vietnam, investigate and document wartime perspectives, including traditional and contemporary imagery of persuasion, conflict, and healing. Bronx High School for the Visual Arts Mary Horgan — Literature/Writing Work on a novel as writer-in-residence at a retreat in Ireland. Bronx International High School Liana Maris — History/Social Studies Observe and document the participatory role youth play in community and civic action within the changing political climate of Caracas, Venezuela. Bronx Latin Katharine Cebulski — Literature/Writing Follow in the footsteps of the Buddha through India, China and Southeast Asia in order to study the links between Buddhism and the novel Siddhartha.
