E C R E W O E E

To the Class of 1937:

It has been your lot to be in high school during four fast-moving and uncertain

years. You have watched the adults of your generation talk peace and at the

same time prepare for war with a fatal inability to do anything about it. You

have watched a capitalistic society on trial with communism and fascism as its

world competitors. One of the most vivid impressions you must have received is

that all is not well with the world. Alexander Woolcott quoted a few years ago

an ancient motto on a sun-dial, "It is later than you think." To you I would say

"It is earlier than you think." I hope you will not have the arrogant optimism of

which Americans have been guilty, but I hope also you will not have the pessim

ism so noticeable in the four years you have been in high school. It is earlier than

you think because America has not yet come into her own, and you shall have

the chance to help in building a more humane and equitable economic order.

It is earlier than you think because you shall have a chance to build a warless

world. All I can hope is that in high school you have realized that a fair, democratic

society is a value for which you'll fight, but that we'll never get peace by fighting;

rather we shall get it by surrendering some things which we do not want to give up.

Fancy a teacher saying farewell to a class and not giving advice! I cannot give

you any advice, but I do want to tell you the things in life which I think give

most permanent satisfaction. There is permanent satisfaction in a sense of honor,

in the consciousness that you can pay back some of the sacrifice and good-will

you have received from others. There is permanent satisfaction in fine workman

ship, in knowing that you have really done your best. There is permanent satis

faction in acquaintance with the best that the world has known in literature,

music, and art. There is permanent satisfaction in sportsmanship, in having it

said of you that in any situation you play the game fairly. It is m y sincere wish

that each of you may lay hold of your share of these permanent satisfactions.

Rochester, New York—1945

You are listening to Station MHS, Monroe High School Auditorium, Rochester, N. Y.

The first speaker on our program will be Mr. John Chamberlain, who will give a short talk on "Why I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles." Mr. Chamberlain came to Monroe an amateur bubble-blower, although Mr. Wiles didn't know it, but now, is giving private lessons to the blue-bloods on Park Avenue.

* * * * * * *

Thank you, Mr. Chamberlain! We now present our own "blues" singer Miss Roshelen Morgan-lazer, who will chant the charming "My Man." Miss Morganlazer graduated Monroe in '37 and is still looking for "her man."

The next number on our program will be a skit titled "Restricted Silence." This is the modern version of "Free Speech," which was presented for our enjoyment and graduation the night of January 20th, eight long years ago. To add to the atmosphere we will have a cast of three men and three girls, instead of the original all male production. The scene is laid in the courtyard of Sing-Sing prison, Ossining, N. Y. The warden is played by Floyd Weiss, who is speaking to the prisoner, LaVerne Horton. LaVerne's childhood gal Helen Watson is waiting for a tete-a-tete with the culprit as usual. The other member of the original cast is Art Davis assisted by Betty the Paul, and Doris the Weaver.

We pause now for station identification

The sponsor of our program, Mr. Robert Wiley, the motorcycle manufacturer, has a little treat for us, in the form of Miss Buzzy Van Arsdale and Miss Carol McDonald, who will tell you the secret to their success as America's most sought-after dress models.

*******

Thank you, girls; I am delighted to hear that you attribute your success to the daily riding of

Wiley's Noiseless Motorcycles.

Now we have those "Rasping Rascals of Rhythm", Paul Schweid, Thomas McHugh, and Carlton Webster singing "We Ain't Got Rhythm." Immediately after this number Miss Doris

Sedgwick will "go to town."

It is also a great privilege to have here the All-American, All-Scholastic, All-Star basketball player, Mr. Paul Bansbach, and his charming stooge Miss Barbara Van Demark. Years ago at Monroe, Miss Van Demark wrote sweet notes to Mr. Bansbach, but today she is publicity agent

and manager.

* * * * * * * Well, thanks for listenin'—and remember for greater comfort and satisfaction ride Wiley's

Noiseless Motorcycles.

This is station M H S signing off, your announcer has been Setag Tenaj (reading from right to

left).

JUNE P C C P H E C y FIRE ROUTS MANY CELEBRITIES FROM ROSENBLATT APARTMENTS

Last night at about 11:26 one of the greatest fires in the history of Hawleyville was reported to Fire Chief Quentin Remein. The Rosenblatt Apartments, owned by Edward Sweeney, burned to the ground. From a temporary investigation by Chief of Police, Captain John Connolly, it is thought to have been caused by Prof. Ellis Hormats trying to discover a chemical compound suitable to take the place of oil of peppermint which Prof. Hormats says "is a bane to all high-school pupils and I feel it my duty to abolish it."

First on the scene of the disaster was Charles Odenbach, noted photographer of the Town

Tooter, with his candid camera. Mr. Richard Brooks also was one of the first to be present. He offered assistance by volunteering to take any of the girls anywhere they might wish to go. Under the excellent supervision of Capt. Connolly, who took matters in hand, everything was kept under control. He asked that some stirring music be played to keep the crowd from being panicky.

The Misses Alice Munson, Janet Armbrust, and Constance Merwin rushed forth with their cellos and violins and obliged the Captain by playing "Spring You Have Left Us and Taken Our Hearts."

Among those who were residing at the apartment and were carried out unharmed were Hawley-ville's outstanding debutante, Miss Anne Marcellus, and her protege, John Wachtel. Mrs. J. J. Plushbottom, president of the Parent Teachers' Association, who was formerly Miss Alice Taylor of this city, ushered out her eight children while her husband, J. J. Plushbottom, prominent banker, followed carrying their favorite book, "Pilgrim's Progress." Other notable residents were: Senator Jack Weaver and his campaign manager Robert Lewis; Robert Springer, screen idol of millions; Gordy Parkswing, famous orchestra leader who is being featured at the Houseworth Hotel; Selden Fisher and Veronica McFarland, well-known radio comedy team; and Juliet Pearson, "America's Darling." Also the mysterious Veena Vooz, Hotcha Girl, was a resident of the apartment and through the investigation of Detective Howard Samuels her identity was revealed. She is Alice Conheady, Irish peasant girl, who came to the big city and made good—

very good.

Miss Jane Lowe, famous model for Glamour-Goldy Hair Rinse advertisements is voicing a complaint to the owner of the apartment for personal damages. Miss Lowe reports that her hair has been singed beyond repair and demands that the owner, Mr. Sweeney, support her or find

someone else to.

Among other valuables burned in the fire were Miss Bettie Mason's (reknowned divorcee) sixth trousseau. Also burned were the famous portraits of Richard A. Williamson—"Happy Child," portrait of Miss Mary Cook; and "Horse and Rider," portrait of Miss Lois Dale and her horse Gurgling Gertrude.

Because two of the residents refused to cooperate and file out in an orderly fashion, it was necessary for several firemen to risk their lives in order to save them. Firemen were forced to invade the study of Prof. Melvin Arsove and compel the Professor to leave an unsolved mathematical problem. The firemen report that there was quite a struggle as the Professor insisted the

flames he saw were only optical illusions and he desired to be left alone with his life work. It was necessary for another fireman to enter the burning building and carry out Miss Elizabeth

Wallace who had been overcome by the smoke while staying behind to get some food to "tide her over." As Miss Wallace recovered she exclaimed to the fireman carrying her, "My daddy's

awful cute. Will you marry me?"

Several other residents caused a great commotion which greatly distracted both the police and fire force. The well-known communist leader, Roger Blank, took advantage of the crowd that had

gathered and enticed many of the people to listen to him as he exhorted them not to "stand by and watch that maniac Paul Norman take away our rights and ruin our government."

Miss Sally Pearlman, another resident, had to be held down by several policemen who kept her from running into the flaming building. Miss Pearlman repeatedly screeched at the top of her voice, "Books are our friends. Books are our friends. W e must love them. W e must save our friends."

Amid the confusion Mr. John Ostrander, salesman for the Schoenburg Insurance Co., attempted to sell fire insurance to the former inhabitants of the apartment. As Mr. Ostrander caused considerable trouble by keeping the fire-victims from an orderly procedure, Captain Connolly asked the two women of the police force, Miss Anges Landers and Miss Jeanne Uffelman, to side-track Mr. Ostrander and keep him from causing any more trouble. The Captain reported that as usual Miss Landers and Miss Uffelman did an excellent job.

Reporters were unable to get a statement from the owner of the apartment, Mr. Sweeney, concerning the total to which the damages amounted, as he could not be located. It is believed by Mr. Sweeney's friends that he has escaped to Hollywood in one of the Archer transport planes to play opposite Ruth Kahn in the picture "I Loved a Lady."

The police have put the matter of immediate relief into the hands of Miss Hetty Jean Barth, Leader of the Red Cross.

Que votre vie soit sincere, contente, et complete. Renee Claire Dumas

It is quite possible that there is in the graduating class of 1937 future governors, statesmen, presidents, and I should add, famous scientists. W e can predict great things for those students who have struggled to attain the best the school has to offer. At all times in life may you be able to say "I have done m y best." Q ^ Acklev

As you leave Monroe to enter upon a new course of endeavor, whether for further education, or for the field of work, may the changes in your plans which are made necessary by the adventure of life, always turn out to be adjustments which give you richer experiences, increased satisfactions and fulfilled hopes. c h a s D. AVE ATQUE VALE

In classroom and in study hall I've seen you, winter, spring, and fall,

And now farewells have come. M a n y will whisper in your ears Advice to guide the coming years,

And mine is: Don't chew gum. Jennie F. Stolbrand

These are strange days—eight year old brides receive dolls for wedding gifts; Italian army officials use Spain as a practice-field; Americans "stand up" for their rights by "sitting down" to them. Even Maine has ceased being dependable as a political barometer. Apparently all has changed; actually things—significant things—are the same as ever. Classes are graduated in the same old way; new tasks await them as always; there are the same mixed emotions at parting. And there are the same good wishes to those who leave, from us who stay behind. M a y you find work to do that you relish doing. M a y you be a success to yourself irrespective of whether your neighbors dub you success or failure. M a y your days of happiness be as long as an assembly paint-job. And finally, even though your pay-check may not look like a P. W . A. grant, may

health and wisdom be yours. Harold G. Sliker

The basketball team passed a fairly successful season this year, winning ten games while losing six. High spots of the season were two games, that with Jefferson and the second game with Washington. If the team had displayed the calibre of basketball shown in those two games throughout the season, an even better record might have been gained. After the midterm examinations the team lost Red Zelter and Dave Conklin which materially weakened the team in the following few games which resulted in Monroe defeats. One game was dropped to Hornell, the Steuben county champion, the cause of which was mostly due to poor officiating. In league play the Monroe team won five games while losing four and ending up in fifth place by virtue of their record.

Due to the extremely unseasonable weather experienced toward the end of the season, Monroe

did not play its scheduled game with Canandaigua. Had our team successfully won the proposed

encounter, Monroe would have ended the season tied for second place. High scorer for the team

for the season was Ames Curchin.

TEAM Lawerence Young, Ernest Robertson, Charles Toor, Cary Brown, Glen Davis, Ernest Sherman, Charles Hamilton, Ivar Lundgaard, Mason Pearsall, Joe Dygert, Wiliam Bagley, Robert Seelye, Frank Cummings, Harold Blohm, Paul Kendall, William Mendenhall, Herman Norton, Robert Randall, Robert Wallace, Raymond Koehler, Robert Curry, Robert Scheck. The team Coach Ackley fashioned out of the material on hand in the fall of 1936 turned out

to be superior enough to tie the powerful team of Edison Tech for second place in the final ratings of the Interscholastic League. The men of the team who earned their senior " M " this season numbered six: Larry Young, Ted Davis, Ernest Robertson, Cary Brown, Ernest Sherman, and Charles Toor. While these men were influential in attaining the second place position for Monroe, they were backed up by a strong reserve team who were eventually granted their Reserve "M's". Those receiving reserve team awards were: Charles Hamilton, Ivar Lundgaard, Joe Dygert, William Bagley, Robert Seelye, Frank Cummings, Harold Blohm, Paul Kendall, William Mendenhall, Herman Norton, Robert Randall, Robert Wallace, Raymond Koehler, Robert Curry, and Robert Scheck. The setup will be a little changed next year all over the city. It has been decided to have a

regular reserve team to run in meets for reserve teams only. This adds a new angle to the outlook, for, heretofore, everybody ran in the same race and the best men came out on top, thus leaving the important reserve runners in complete obscurity. The new setup will open up a new field of opportunity for the average runner, and all signs points to its turning out for the best. The results of the meets run were as follows:

Friday, October 2, 1936—Monroe 39, Edison 39, East 45. Time 11 min. Friday, October 9, 1936—Monroe 32, Madison 33, West 66. Time 11:05:02 Friday, October 16, 1936—Marshall 27, Monroe 40, Jefferson 69. Time 10:58:02 Friday, October 23, 1936—Monroe 20, Charlotte 44, Franklin 76. Time 10:58:02

Third place was the place the Monroe bowling team achieved in league play and this about sums

up the results for the season. A Monroe bowler, John Rogers, won the interscholastic singles

championship with a piece of excellent bowling.

BASEBALL

Since the first practice of the season hasn't even been held as yet, the comments made herein can

only be considered as prophesies. The majority of the team which won the Sectional title in 1936

is returning, but there are several noticeable absences. Tony Cagnazzo and Ike Doty, mainstays

of the championship pitching staff have both left school. George Gamble, league's heaviest hitter

last year, has been declared ineligible while Charley Phillips, stellar shortstop, has graduated.

Jerry Curran, up from the reserves, and Paul Fromm, a transfer from West who may be eligible,

are the only hurlers who seem up to the standard of interscholastic baseball. The makeup of the

rest of the team is highly problematical although most of it will be made up of holdovers from

the previous season.

Although no predictions can be made as to final standings of the league, the Monroe team

should give a respectable performance.

With the return of many of last year's veterans, the Track Team, under the coaching of Lewis

Michelsen, is looking forward to another championship in the Interscholstic League. Several new

candidates are giving serious competition to the regulars, thereby assuring Coach Michelsen the

best of the school's runners.

TENNIS

Mr. Ackley, Coach

Monroe's tennis fans can look forward to another season with high hopes for their third straight

championship tennis team. Despite the loss of four letter-men; LaVerne Horton, Roy Roberts,

Bob Lovell, and Lester Klein, the team prospects seem bright with letter-man Howie Samuels

returning to act as mainstay of a team likely to be composed of Ernie Frank, Bob Payton, and

two or three other players to be chosen from a group including Flint, Cooros, Kalb, Thompson,

Rogachefsky, Maxwell, Kilborn, Rosenthal, and Kaplan. Coach Ackley started practice soon

after the Easter holidays. The matches this year will, as usual, be played on the courts of the

Rochester Tennis Club and the Maplewood "Y."

GOLF

No too much can be ascertained about the golf prospects at this point. From past standards,

the Charlotte team rates the top spot. However the Monroe team looms up to be the dark horse

of the league. Stan Collier is the solitary veteran returning from last year's team. Ray Weisler,

a substitute who gave a very creditable performance in tying Stan for fourth place in the Inter-

scholastics last year, is expected to receive another of the berths on the team. The winning of

places by even these two is not assured, all four places being open for competition at this point.

From among the other golfers of the school enough good material should be found to at least

finish in third place, the spot occupied by last year's team.
