HANDED OVER IN LOVE It usually takes about three months for someone to ask, but instead of waiting, I thought I would bring it up now. Inquiring minds may want to know. You may have noticed when I preside over Holy Communion and recite the Words of Institution I use the words “handed over” instead of “betrayed.” The Greek word, paradidomi, which is used in this case, can be translated as “handed over” as well as “betrayed”; however, there is an important theological message regarding our rela-tionship with God that is conveyed by using “handed over” in place of “betrayed.” I imagine most of us, when hearing of Jesus being betrayed, immediately think of Jesus’ betrayal by his disciple, Judas Iscariot, which led to his ar-rest, trial, and eventual crucifixion. Such a thought process also naturally leads us to place our focus on the human involvement in this defin-ing event of the Christian faith. It places singular importance on the action of humankind in making this possible; yet, it leaves out the most important player of all—God.

In assigning Judas and thus humankind with the central role of providing the gift of Jesus and his death for our redemption, we do not allow our hearts to focus on the true giver of the greatest gift ever given. It was God, not Judas, who gave His only son as the once and for all gift that takes away the sin of the world and provides all God’s beloved children with unceasing forgiveness and abundant grace. This stated, it is not wrong or improper to use the word “betrayed,” for God was present in Judas’ action. It is simply one’s personal choice where to place the emphasis. Either way, as we gather each week at the Lord’s Table and reflect upon our brokenness and the re-deeming power gifted to us through the gift of Je-sus Christ to heal us, let us focus our minds and hearts on the One who handed His beloved son over to death, so we would have new life despite our betrayals and trespasses. With thanksgiving for God’s goodness,

Pastor Mark

Stewardship Special Giving for SEPTEMBER:

United Lutheran Seminary at Gettysburg WHAT IS UNITED LUTHERAN SEMI-NARY? In 2017, exactly five hundred years after the Protestant Reformation, the Lutheran Theo-logical Seminary at Gettysburg and the Lu-theran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia joined their two historic institutions as United Lutheran Seminary (ULS). A SCHOOL FOR CHURCH AND WORLD As a premier graduate professional school, United Lutheran Seminary offers theological education and leadership formation that is both academically rigorous and practically ori-ented. Students engage in the study of scrip-ture and biblical languages, church history, theology and philosophy as well as practical disciplines such as preaching and pastoral care. Graduates are equipped to move in many directions as leaders in church and soci-ety, including parish ministry, chaplaincies, and as leaders in arenas of human service and justice, or after additional study, as scholars and professors. A SCHOOL FOR YOU Whether your interest is the Bible, steward-ship and ecology, urban ministry, politics, food (or the politics of food), the pastoral arts of ministry, public leadership, social justice, worship, faith & science, ecumenism or the study of Lutheranism; United Lutheran Semi-nary offers a theological education that will prepare you to serve the needs of the world today wherever your passions may lie. We of-fer courses for people who wish to become rostered leaders in the church, academic schol-ars, or for the curious who love to learn more about Jesus, the church, and the world. For additional information please check out the display table in the gathering area. A representative from the seminary will be giving a temple talk on Sunday, 9/15.

To support the United Lutheran Seminary, you can use your Special Giving envelope during the month of September. Thanks in advance for your support.

Our main task is to help the resi-dents find their lucky numbers on the card. Some resi-dents even win while dozing off! After Bingo, we help the residents back to their rooms. We are finished around 3:15 PM. Volunteers needed to deliver the altar flowers to sick/shut-in/hospitalized members following the 2nd liturgy. All deliveries will be local. If interested con-tact the Pastor or the church office. Additional Nursery volunteers are needed to assist with child care on Sunday mornings. If interested, contact the church office.
