Sound Wall

This sound wall was commissioned by a client who lived close to the local highway. Foundations had been built by a different contractor, along with several stone pillars. We filled in the gaps with rammed earth and turned the project into an opportunity to teach the rammed earth process to 12 students from the USA, Thailand and Mexico.

I was responsible for teaching people 1-on-1. There are many aspects of rammed earth building that are difficult to be found in books or online, such as how to create a desired finish on the wall by correctly shoveling the dirt or the exact soil moisture content and mixing procedure.

Residence

This house was nestled into the hillside and oriented to the south for maximum solar gain. The insulated rammed earth walls would provide excellent thermal mass, greatly reducing heating and cooling needs while fitting in to the landscape. We were responsible for building the first floor of structural rammed earth.
