Monaco, 24th October 2006. Selecting materials is both an art and ascience, and an essential aspect of luxury goods. DuPont™ Surlyn® offers aunique combination of design freedom, glass-like clarity, functionalperformance, appealing tactile properties and ease of production. As aconsequence the material continues to find recognition amongst leadingbrands from the world of fragrances and cosmetics as it enables them tocreate packaging with maximum design freedom and consumer appeal.

Whether replicating the intricate shape of a petalled flower, or creating aminimalist, thick-walled closure with differing thicknesses from one side toanother, Surlyn® allows the production of fragrance caps and closures thatare as elegant as the glass bottles they adorn. In perfect harmony with thebottle, caps and other parts made of Surlyn® are crystal-clear, without sinkmarks or voids. Furthermore, surface textures and effects, such as frostedor polished effects, can be created – often in one single process.Alternatively, matching colour between the cap, the bottle and its contentscan be achieved with the simple use of a masterbatch. Further room forcreativity is enabled by the material’s excellent compatibility with laserwelding, facilitating the simple integration of additional design elements intothe cap.

Upon comparison with alternatives such as aluminium, PMMA orpolyethylene terephthalate (PET), Surlyn® has convinced many premiumfragrance brands: beyond its aesthetic appeal it provides scratch- andabrasion-resistance, stiffness, chemical resistance as well as ease-of-processing, and therefore offers an overall cost-effective solution.

“The capability of Surlyn® to reinvent itself and help fragrance brandscreate successful packaging concepts is endless,” said Danielle Blomert, global business manager at DuPont Cosmetic Solutions. “Caps and closuresmade of Surlyn® lend a premium quality appearance to luxury packaging, yet they are tough enough to meet the requirements of this global industryin terms of production, transportation, distribution and daily use.”
