President’s Message

At Randwick Rugby Club we expect a lot. That’s for sure!

But, even by our demanding standards, 2017 has been a successful year – on and off the field.

That’s for sure!

Not ultimately successful. I doubt that we’ll ever reach that level.

But successful. That’s for sure!

There were many highlights:

We reached the playoffs in all seven teams – the only club to do so.

Our 3rd Grade Colts were Premiers and played very well indeed.

We were second in both the Club Championship and the Colts Club Championship.

We launched the Randwick Magic Women’s Sevens team at many home games. They are

a hugely impressive team and will continue to grow. A huge thank you to Fidel Tukel.

Ned Hanigan made his Wallaby debut and Sekope Kepu and Kurtley Beale continue as

important members of our national team (20% of our Wallaby starting team!!!).

Our ex-Colt, Lukhan Tui, now a Queensland Red, also made his Wallaby debut.

Our Super Rugby players are too numerous to mention individually, as are our Sevens

players, our U20 players and our Australian Schoolboys. A special mention though to our

Australian Schoolboys captain, Will Harrison.

A successful year on the field. Not ultimately successful, but we continue to head in the right

direction.

Our training facility at Latham Park now boasts the best training pitch in any football code in

Australia. I do not exaggerate.

Our partnership with Randwick City Council, led by Simon Poidevin, supported by Jeff Sayle and Nick Ryan, over a two-year period, has resulted in this wonderful facility – a massive boon to all players, senior and junior, in the district.

Off the field, we had a successful year also.

We aim to develop people – players, coaches and administrators – and we continue to do just

that. We have Michael Cheika, of course, and Morgan Turinui and Shaun Berne, all at elite level

coaching.

Nick Ryan has been appointed as General Manager, Professional Rugby & Pathways at the Melbourne Rebels.

Michael Stephen has been appointed to the Physical Development staff at the Waratahs.

Nick Ryan says frequently that “better people make better rugby players”. This remains foremost

in our minds and consequently forms the basis of our culture.

7

Our strategic partnership with UNSW forms a vital cog in this machinery. We value it highly – and so also does Uni.

Likewise our relationships with other tertiary education organisations give options for players.

Employment opportunities continue to be developed with people who value the qualities being developed here.

In a very difficult environment, sponsors continue to be attracted to the Club – our name, our

culture, our pathways for young Australians, all strike a chord with business leaders.

Suttons City is our new ‘front of jersey’ sponsor and, importantly, active supporters at Coogee Oval.

The Randwick Club - formerly the Randwick Labor Club - has begun a strategic partnership with us and, following the upgrading of their premises at the former Coogee Sports Club, will provide a home for both Randwick Rugby and Randwick Petersham Cricket Club. They are also active supporters at Coogee Oval.

We aim to lead the way – in every way.

Under Dr Adrian Cohen’s leadership, our Concussion Research & Management initiative, with world-leading Catapult Technology, is without peer in Australian sport.

Our junior organisation also continues to grow – something many sports, in many parts of the

world, are struggling with.

Our Junior Rugby Academy is the jewel in our development pathway. Led by Jim Dubos and staffed by an army of ex-Wicks players and volunteers, it is the envy of other Sydney Rugby Clubs.

The Randwick Warriors offer the first vital step up from Juniors towards Colts Rugby. Congratulations goes to Jamie Johnson for an excellent job steering this.

We value our relationship with our junior clubs and, after a few years of struggle, now provide a massive step forward in support and focus from the senior club. We now see many more junior players and their families at home games.

I hope that I have given members and supporters a reasonable summary of our year. A successful

year, for sure.

More importantly, the summary describes who we are –

The Randwick District Rugby Union Football Club.

We support all who wish to play rugby in our district.

Bob Dwyer

LIFE MEMBERS ASSOCIATION REPORT

On behalf of all the current Members of the Life Members Association, I congratulate and

acknowledge the achievements of the Playing Group during Season 2017. All seven teams were

successful in qualifying for the Major Premiership Series, well done. A special acknowledgment is

recorded for the Colts Third Grade side who were successful in winning the Third Grade Colts

grand final by defeating Sydney University 29-12 and being awarded the Bill Simpson Shield.

The Playing Group is also congratulated in finishing in second place in both the Grade and the

Colts Club Championships.

Once again the Life Members Association acknowledges the contribution of all Members including

but not limited to players, coaching staff, on field support staff, medical assistants, administrators,

sponsors, volunteers in any capacity and the Rugby Board who collectively enabled the Club to

participate competitively and successfully in the Sydney District Competition in season 2017.

Association Activities

During 2017 the Association held meetings on 17 May 2017 and 27 September 2017. The

Association is a Sub-Committee of the Randwick Rugby Board. The Association from time to time

performs such tasks as directed by the Board.

Pursuant to the Board’s By-Laws, the Association has been tasked to identify and recommend to

the Board the names of Club Members who the Association considers worthy nominees for the

Club’s prestigious awards including Life Membership, the Wally Meagher Trophy, Meritorious

Service Awards and inductees to the Randwick Hall of Fame. The Board has the final say on any

recommendations.

15

During the course of the season there occurred a vigorous exchange of ideas and opinions

between the Association and the Board on particular issues which the Association considered

worthy of debate.

The Life Members were guests of the Board in the Sponsors Arena for the game against Penrith.

The Life Members who attended were very grateful and had an enjoyable afternoon.

Vale Terrence (Terry) Reid

On the 29th April 2017 Terrence William Reid died following a long illness. Terry was elected a

Life Member of the Club in 2001. He had a long association with the Club both as a player and

coach.

Terry played Randwick Juniors and entered Grade in 1953 and played until the end of 1962

season. He played 150 games for the Club, 103 in First Grade. Terry represented NSW ten times

and appeared in five test matches. He was a speedy and devastating breakaway. Terry

successfully coached 4th Grade for four years and 2nd Grade for two years. In 2016 Terry Reid

was inducted into the Randwick Rugby Hall of Fame. Terry, a tremendous Randwick and rugby

man, will be missed.

New Life Members

At the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Club, long term Members, Ross Curtis and Jim Dubos were

elected as Life Members of the Club and became immediately Members of the Life Members

Association.

Ross Curtis

Apart from a stint with the Randwick Golden Oldies Team in 2000, Ross Curtis did not play at any

level for the Club. He did, however, serve Randwick for more than two decades. In 2009 his

contribution was acknowledged when he received the Meritorious Service Award.

Playing Record

Following a schoolboy experience in Rugby League, Ross joined the Bondi Boys Rugby Club

spending his first three years with them in the Under 16 to Under 18 in Sub-District Competition.

In his final year with the Bondi Boys he was a member of their Premiership winning under 21B

Team which was awarded the Ian Clarke Cup.

Managing Record

Retiring from active rugby, Ross Curtis later joined the Club and started a 24 year period as a

Manager to Senior Grade sides. In 1989-1990 he started as Manager of the 4th XV who were

Premiers in both years. He next managed the 3rd XV 1991-1993 and 2013. They were Premiers

17

in 1992. As Manager to the 2nd XV 1992-1996 he saw them through to 4 Premierships losing in

the Grand Final of 1995. A return to Third Grade in 2010 saw another Premiership in his

successful career as a Team Manager.

Other Rugby Service

For more than a decade Ross Curtis managed the kiosk in the Jeffrey Sayle Pavilion at Latham

Park dispensing his services with unfailing cheerfulness and courtesy up until he retired from this

post in 2010. As well, he gave regular support to the team that provided the Thursday night BBQ

for players, coaching staff, other officials and visitors.

Ross is renowned as a generous and reliable volunteer as well as a true believer in the Randwick

Brand of Rugby. Furthermore, like others before him, he is one whose performance and

commitment provide a model for others and a worthy recipient of Life Membership.

Jim Dubos

One of the best known names south of the harbour in schools and junior rugby is that of Jim

Dubos. For his services to rugby, at these levels, he has received the award in 1976 of Life

Member of the Coogee JRU Club; inducted into the Randwick Juniors Hall of Fame 2010; received

the Randwick City Council Australia Day Community Service Award 2014; and the Sydney

Archdiocesan Primary School Sports Council Award 2010 for services to rugby.

The Senior Club has also recognised his work with feeder schools and junior clubs by presenting

him, in 2012, with its Meritorious Service Award. This Award is made to a non-playing member

who has rendered outstanding service to the Randwick Football Club.

Playing Record

Attended Randwick Boys High School where he played in the Under 13-15 Teams of 1962-1964.

Played locally with the Coogee JRU Club 1961-1968 representing East-Randwick Representative

Teams in each of these years. Also a rep in the Southern Zone 1967-1968. In the Senior Club

Jim was graded in 4th Grade in 1969 but later that season dropped out due to Saturday work

commitments. Returned to 6th Grade in 1996 at age 46. Previously, Jim played with the Coogee

Rugby Club in Sub-District Competition on and off over the years 1970-1985. With the Juniors

and Subbies he totalled an impressive 350 games.

18

Coaching and Managing Record

At Junior level, Jim Dubos was a Coach for the years 1975-1992. He coached the Coogee

Juniors 2013-2015 and saw the Coogee Club into 14 Grand Finals, winning 8 Premierships. He

coached the Sydney Catholic Primary School Representative Teams 2004-2014; the 3rd Grade

Colts 1992, First 1993 and Fourths 2002-2003; 6th Grade 1995 Premiers, the 1996 Runners-Up

and was Assistant Coach and Manager in 1997; and also coached the Randwick Representative

Teams Under 11 to Under 15 at 5 State Finals of which two were State Champions in the period

2010-2014.

Administration

Jim served on the Management Committee of the Senior Club for 2 years in the 1990s; Secretary

of the Coogee Juniors 1975-1979; and President 1984-1986. He was Foundation President of the

East Gardens JRU 1999-2003; President of the Myrtle Green Warriors 2014-2015; and helped

form the Eora Warriors, Sydney’s first indigenous rugby club. Jim has also served as Founder and

President of the Coogee Netball Club 1986-1990 as well as Life Member. He is also a Life

Member of the Coogee Huskies of which he was President 1981-1984. More recently he has

served as the Development Officer for the Randwick Rugby Junior Academy 2013-2016.

The work that Jim Dubos performs with local feeder schools and junior clubs is vital to the future of

the Randwick Football Club especially since their graduates come to our Club steeped in the

culture of the Randwick Brand. Jim also is a worthy recipient of Life Membership.

Conclusion

Once more on behalf of all the Life Members, I record and acknowledge the support and

recognition of the Life Members Association received from the Rugby Board.

The Life Members are only a small component of the Randwick Rugby Community, the

Association endeavours, with others, to ensure the history, traditions and customs of the Club are

not diminished. The Association endorses the philosophy of a former commentator on the style of

rugby inherent in the Club.

19

“Here is a Club that primarily enjoys its football, enjoys the freedom and creativity of

spinning a rugby ball from one pair of hands to another, relishes the chance to race pell-

mell from one side of the field to the other until the opposition goal is breached and

plundered.”

The Association congratulates Owen Finegan on his appointment as head coach for the next two

seasons. The Association extends its best wishes to Owen and the whole of the coaching staff for

season 2018.

DIRECTOR OF RUGBY REPORT – Nick Ryan

Reflecting on Season 2017, it is one when there was no doubt the Club consolidated the gains

that have been made over the preceding three seasons. The evolution of the playing group, the

maturity and experience that was gained through numerous pre-season sessions and games

played started to manifest on the field with some very strong Club, team and individual

performances.

This was shown on the competition table with the Club finishing second in both the Club and Colts

Championships, the only club in the Shute Shield to secure all seven teams a place in the finals

series, a deserved 3rd Colts premiership and a number of players being exposed to representative

rugby.

At the core of the ‘rugby programs strategy’ is the statement that we are unashamedly a

development Club, a “destination club” where aspiring and hardworking individuals join in the

pursuit of excellence. There is no doubt the cultural and structural changes that have been

implemented across the Club have seen many young men grab hold and take advantage of some

life-changing opportunities.

To run a holistic program requires enormous support both in manpower and commercial

partnerships and it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the incredible support of our

volunteer coaches and managers across all seven teams. Their sense of purpose and unity they

set to the players was exceptional. To the medical and physical performance team, our players

could not be in better hands. This department has grown massively in the last few years. We wish

Mick Stephen all the best in his new role at the Waratahs.

To the Board members who are forever in the background but never removed from supporting the

players and staff, the turnaround in this Club is a legacy to which you all should be proud. To Bob

Dwyer, Simon Poidevin and Ian Bonnette, you have been relentless in setting a standard and

attention to detail that is unmatched in the Shute Shield. To John Tuxworth, who has stepped

down from the board, your strategic vision to achieve success is something that will be difficult to

replace and your personal support has been very humbling.

The Club is now entering a new era under the direction of new head

coach, Owen Finegan. Owen is a proud Randwick man who will

ensure that the standards and traditions of the Club over many years

will be upheld as we seek to bring the Shute Shield back to Coogee.

Together with Travis Partridge they will drive the rugby program

forward to great success.

Personally, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved

with the Club for their incredible support. It is difficult to put into words

what the Club means and has done for me. To the playing group who

have been a pleasure to work with, to see your development on and off

the field over the past four seasons has been one of the thrills of this

job and I look forward to continuing to watch and assist in your

development over the coming years. I will forever be a servant of the

Club and I look forward to maintaining my association with the Club going forward and seeing the

Randwick Rugby Social Media including WicksTV

WicksTV was initially started in 2009 when a couple of Randwick players took it upon themselves

to direct and produce WicksTV. Only two episodes were created. It was resurrected in 2010 by the

Rugby Club’s then General Manager and a volunteer which laid the foundation for the outstanding

production it has become in recent seasons. Together with the Galloping Green and Randwick

Rugby Club pages on Facebook, @GallopingGreen on Twitter and Instagram every effort is made

to reach our supporters and followers.

First Grade Report

Coach: Shannon Fraser

Assistant Coaches: Owen Finegan and Matt Carraro

Manager: Saxon Bowles

Captains: Sam Croke and Andrew Deegan

The 2017 Shute Shield campaign began like previous years with a group of men bound together

by aspiration, determination and a commitment to fulfill individual and collective potential. The first

passes thrown, tackles made and metres ran were on an unmarked and slightly overgrown top

field at Latham Park, overlooking the freshly turned soil of the bottom field’s transformation to

synthetic turf .

The group, buoyed by the arrival of new coaching duo Owen Finegan (forwards) and Matt Carraro

(backs), set about undertaking the challenge of improving self and team. The early training focus

27

remained on skill development through the establishment of a ‘game style’ to underpin the

specifics of the weekly game plans to come.

The skill development program was once again tightly integrated with the physical performance

program, ensuring players developed the capacity to meet the training and competition demands

of the upcoming season. Through the use of the Catapult GPS and the Baseline Athlete

Management System, Michael ‘Lebo’ Stephen individually managed the training loads of each

player, ensuring maximum performance capacity and reducing the injury risk associated to

overload.

After almost a month of torrential rain, the season started with a confidant performance against

Wests Harbour (53-20) in front of a healthy Coogee crowd. The following month saw mixed

performances against Southern Districts (14-39), Sydney University (28-27) and Parramatta (48-

22) before claiming bragging rights over ached rivals Eastern Suburbs (26-6) in front of what may

well have been the largest crowd at Coogee Oval since taking on the All Blacks in 1988.

While the loss of key players Sam Figg (Japan), Will Munro (injury), Seamus Frost (injury), Mark

Baldwin (employment), Mitch Short (Western Force) and Harrison Goddard (Melbourne Rebels)

during the second month of competition presented some challenges, it was also a chance to

develop the squad and provide others the opportunity to play in the top grade including Jack

Hayson, Lewis Taie, Ed Kennedy, Jesse Harris, Latu Latunipulu and Devon Stoltz as well as the

return of Club legend Patrick Phibbs.

Out-muscled by a powerful Manly (27-46) team, the group bounced back with a 24-all draw

against Eastwood before knocking over reigning premiers Northern Suburbs (29-22) at North

Sydney Oval and Gordon (74-12) at Coogee.

The weeks that followed not only produced the desired wins against Penrith (71-26) and Eastern

Suburbs (28-19) but also provided the group some much-needed rest with the bye weekend and

also the cancellation of the Warringah game under tragic circumstances.

The final six rounds produced three wins against Eastwood (32-14), Parramatta (52-12) and

Gordon (43-29) and three heart breaking loses to Warringah (29-30), Wests Harbour (29-32) and

Southern Districts (30-34) resulting in a fourth-place finish at the conclusion of the regular season.

28

Having scored 611 points at an average of 33.94 per/game and conceding 425 points at an

average of 23.4 per game, the final act in this production was not a true reflection of the effort, the

commitment and the raw talent of this group and as our season ended prematurely, the stature of

this group and this club remain elevated and of strong moral fibre.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed in our final three performances; however I am also

extremely proud of what this young group has achieved and excited at the prospects of 2018. Our

year is close.

In what was possibly the most competitive Shute Shield season in recent history, the Club

provided 19 players the opportunity to make their First Grade debut while a total of 53 players

represented first grade throughout the season.

I am an advocate that success of a player, team and club is more than just the measure of winning

or losing and that analyzing these peripheral successes is just as important.

Throughout 2017 the Club has celebrated numerous achievements outside the Ws column of the

competition table including the Wallaby capping of Ned Hanigan, a further three players making

their Super Rugby debut including Mitch Short (Western Force), Harrison Goddard (Melbourne

Rebels) and Esei Ha’angana (Melbourne Rebels), while 7s guru Henry Hutchison has joined David

Horwitz in signing with the Melbourne Rebels for 2018. Sam Croke and Ben O’Donnell debuted for

the Aussie 7s, Captain Andrew Deegan has signed with Connacht in Ireland and back rowers Will

Munro and Sam Figg have pursued professional contracts in France and Japan respectively. The

Club was also well represented in the Australian U20s at the Junior World Cup through Harrison

Goddard, Simon Kennewell and Henry Hutchison.

A special mention must go to our fourteen players who were selected to play NRC in 2017. These

include Lachlan Anderson, Jock Armstrong, Cameron Betham, Adam Freier, Harrison Goddard,

Esei Ha’angana, Henry Hutchison, Andrew Kellaway, Nick Kellaway, Latu Latinipulu, Reece

Robinson, Sonny Satuala and Mitch Short.

I’d like to also acknowledge those players who wear jerseys 16 – 23 and who standby weekly to

support and contribute to the success of the First Grade team. The role you play is significant and

a vital component to the team’s performance. Thank you.

29

The leadership of new co-captains Sam Croke and Andrew Deegan provided stability and

consistency in an environment that unavoidably kept changing.

Off the field there has been a great team working to get the players in a position to perform. To my

fellow coaches, Owen Finegan and Matt Carraro, thank you for your highly valued assistance

throughout the season. I’d also like to acknowledge the fantastic job Michael Stephen has done in

getting the players physically prepared on a weekly basis. Additionally, the support provided by the

Second Grade coach Damion Ryan, along with lower grade coaches Matt Buckland, Ben

Rutherford, Joe Picone, Lucas Bradbury and Jeffrey Sayle has been outstanding.

Thanks goes also to team manager Saxon Bowles, the medical team led by Dr. Paul Raftos and

Di Long, as well as gear steward and photographer Ric McLallan.

Thank you to Declan Ooloff for driving the video analysis within the team and who, through the use

of the newly purchased Hudl analysis system, was able to ‘code’ and make game footage

accessible to each and every player and coach.

Last but certainly not least, I’d like to acknowledge and thank Director of Rugby Nick Ryan for his

continued passion, energy and support throughout the season.

Second Grade Report

Coach: Damion Ryan

Manager: Peter Meagher

Captain: Nic Andrews

Another Aussie summer will soon be here; hot sunny days at the beach, spending time with family

and friends and then before you know it back to pre-season training. It is time to reflect and look

back at the year we had as a team and the contribution we made to the club.

It was a disappointing to all involved that Second Grade did not defend the Premiership win from

2016 with our season coming to an unexpected early end in week one of the finals.

The second grade competition was a close affair. Seven teams vying for a position in the top six

coming into Round 18, no less than two wins separating that of 1st to 7th on the ladder. The

statistics show that we lost six games, four in a row and then losing only one of our last eleven

games before our semi-final defeat to Eastwood (our bogey team).

The disappointment of losing our semi still lingers, the self-belief and confidence of the team

derived from an increase in skill, fitness and knowledge was pleasing to witness. There were many

qualities shown over the year and not just with the rugby played. The standards attained through

accountability to the team including honesty to each other together with the style of rugby played

helped shape our team identity.

To Captain Nic Andrews thank you for your leadership and perseverance throughout this year. Nic

did a great job, a good listener always looking for improvement and new challenges. A young

senior group surrounded Nic; they were influential always seeking improvement, getting the best

of the playing group and the coaches.

Credit must go to all players that played in the team during the year, the contribution of all players

whether a consistent starter of the team, coming up the grades or even some colts, your impact

was enormous. Likewise, to the players who played many First Grade games, it is always difficult

going up and down but all you handled yourselves exceptionally and were a positive influence to

the team. Chapeau!

The mix of the team resembled the UN! A real melting pot with all players getting on extremely

well on and off the field with friendships formed that will last a lifetime including players from

Ireland, England, United States, Tonga, Samoa, New Zealand and Australia.

I encouraged the team to play fifteen man attacking rugby. I stressed many times over the year the

importance of improvement, process and execution. Results will take care of themselves if we

execute with a high level of skill.

34

What impressed me about the team over the year was the players’ willingness to accept change,

something that is sometimes hard to do. The team developed an ability to sustain pressure from

opposition teams and then convert that pressure into points at the other end of the field. This was

the turning point of the year.

The players acknowledged that other teams could play good rugby; our ability to reduce the time

they played well was defining; well done boys. Notable games where this occurred resulting in

wins were against Easts in Round 12, Warringah round 13 and particularly Southern Districts in

round 18.

The skill level of the playing group continued to increase throughout the year allowing the team to

play a more expansive style of play; we even had the introduction of a couple of “old school”

moves in the backs resulting in some good attacking raids.

The team play between backs and forwards developed, improved, and saw the boys play their

best rugby scoring length of the field tries with great support lines and passing through many sets

of hands, it was entertaining and a pleasure to watch.

Unfortunately scoring points was not an issue when we held onto the ball, upon three occasions

we nearly scored 100 points and had a healthy attacking record. Our defence at times by either

lack of organisation, poor execution or awareness was our nemesis and led to momentum swings

costing us at critical times.

As mentioned previously, the fitness of the players was very good, thanks goes to Mick Stephen

and Michael Pratt. The work was endless but ensured the players were always at their optimal.

Nick Ryan was integral to the Club’s stability and success this year, a great soundboard and

always willing to see the big picture. Thank you!

Our team coaches Shannon Fraser, Owen Finegan, Matt Carraro, Matt Buckland, Ben Rutherford,

Joe Picone, Lucas Bradbury and Jeffrey Sayle and all colts coaches, thank goes to each of you for

friendship and assistance in coaching the players and giving your all.

Mark Giacheri and Mario Ledesma for your line out and scrummaging sessions, we are very lucky

to have such a high calibre of coaches at our calling, thank you.

Dr Paul Raftos, Dr Adrian Cohen, Di Long and Louisa McGuinness every game many training

sessions your work is invaluable.

Ric McLallen for all of your work, as always cheers mate!

Special thanks goes to manager Peter Meagher for his assistance and also to Billy Davies for

stepping in when required.

Next year will bring new opportunities and challenges, look forward to, enjoy the journey, and

control your destination.

Third Grade Report

Coach: Matt Buckland

Assistant Coach Ben Rutherford

Managers: Tom Wallace and Tom Fahy

Captain: Patrick Hodgetts

This is the season “that could have been”. To be eliminated when the team did not lose our final

game was heartbreaking. I still can’t get over it.

The team started the season well with two resounding wins over West Harbour 32-13 and

Southern Districts 52-17. Our third game was against Sydney University. The team let them race

to a two try lead early in the game. Our team then warmed up. However, the early scores killed the

team and the team lost 19-12.

The team then hade two good wins over Parramatta away 31-7 and Eastern Suburbs 33-24 at

home. After five rounds the team had won four games and lost one game.

The team’s next game was against Manly. The team won 24-14 with Manly scoring late to make

the score look more respectable. After six rounds, the team had won five games and lost one

game. We were exactly where we wanted to be coming into a tough fixture against Eastwood. The

team played some amazing rugby against Eastwood in the first half, and led 24-10 at half time.

However, the half time break stopped the team’s momentum and Eastwood gained their

momentum winning the game 25-24. Northern Suburbs in the next game leapt to a 21-nil lead. We

eventually lost 28-21 after storming back into the game. At this stage of the season we had three

losses – two games by 7 points and one game by 1 point. Another 1 point lost to Gordon in the

next game left the team reeling. In that game, the team was leading 18-13 when the bell sounded.

Gordon put a long kick through. All we needed to do was to dive on the ball and the team wins.

However, our player tripped over whilst chasing the ball and left the Gordon winger with a clear

run to the line. We lost the game 19-18. Ouch!

Two wins against Easts and a draw against Warringah got us back on track. With six rounds to

play it was now or never. The team went down to Warringah and Eastwood in the next two games

but then things clicked. The team put a mammoth score on Parramatta running out winners 92-nil

at home. Many players regained their confidence and the plan was clear – win every game and

the team is guaranteed finals football. Next up was Gordon away. The team won on the bell in a

rollercoaster 36 points to 31. The boys played brilliantly. The team smashed West Harbour in the

next game and won against Southern Districts at home 44-17.

The team finished the season in joint fourth position on points but sixth on games won. Those

dropped games we lost by 7 points or less cost the team.

We played Eastwood in game one of the finals. The boys played brilliantly and the game ended in

a 29 all draw. We were eliminated as we finished lower on the ladder. There was not any extra

time. Nothing. It all ended so quickly.

39

With a team with no one older than 24 things are looking bright for these boys and they will be

back for more next year, going two steps further, and take out the title.

The best and fairest player was Sam Connor with honourable mentions to Patrick Hodgetts, Toby

Johnston, Luke Rowntree, Darren Rowntree, Darren Ahkoui, Keiran Knight, Charlie McKay, Joe

Whitelock and Hame Tali.

Fourth Grade Report

Coach: Joe Picone

Assistant Coaches: Lucas Bradbury and Jeffrey Sayle

Managers: Ian Holder and Billy Davies

Captain: Tom Weber

All things considered, sixth place and leading by 2 points at half time of the elimination final

against the eventual premiers Sydney University, to go down swinging 12 – 21 showed how much

guts this Fourth-Grade team has and how well this side performed this season.

Our preparation for the start of the season was severely hampered by bad weather which only

gave us 40 minutes of trial time. The combinations for the team were under developed and as a

result had the team behind for the start of the season.

We rallied after a number of losses and began a run home from Round 10 to only drop one game

to grab sixth spot. It makes me wonder what could had been if we had a better preparation but for

the poor weather.

So when things were looking grim I thought some expert help wouldn`t go astray so to be able to

call in the likes of Bob Dwyer was certainly welcomed. In one session with the players we had

them in the right Randwick frame of mind to run the ball and it worked. To Bob I extend a hearty

“thank you”.

The 2017 group of players come from the great tradition of Randwick men of being tough and with

a never give up attitude. The sight of seeing Alex Peterson throwing his jockey-sized body

defending his goal line against a very large Eastwood forward pack while playing flanker for us

that day, because of the injury toll the club had on that day. I will never forget it. Alex`s body being

bounced back and then him coming hard back at them was quite a sight.

It is an interesting process to go through when you are down and look out of it and to see how

certain people conduct themselves, who stands up and fights on and who stands and points

fingers of blame and gives up on you. Only when you are down, do you know who you can depend

on, not when you are doing well and people are patting you on your back.

Tom Weber led this side with great conviction all year. To Tom goes a huge hand of thanks. All at

the Club wish you good luck with your bright future and upcoming nuptials.

I would like to thank Lucas Bradbury, my co-coach, who was one who worked at it all season and

never turned it up when things got tough.

Also, a big thank you goes to Nick Ryan for all your hard work for the Club.

Many thanks go to my personal “slaves” Ian Holder and Bill Davies who, as managers, put in an

enormous amount of work, dealing with over 45 players over the course of a season. This is at

times extremely hard work. My grateful thanks goes to these great Randwick men.

44

Also, thanks go to Marty Kiernan who, when he could, helped out taking the backs for training

sessions and running the water on game days. His general advice was always welcomed – cheers

mate.

Thanks also goes to the Club’s first rate medical staff of Dr Paul Raftos, Di Long and Louisa

McGuinness. You lot are absolute saints in having to deal with at times adult toddlers.

Also to Dan Dowe the master of match day and general dogs (whippet) body, thank you for your

hard work.

Jeffrey Sayle, I like to personally thank you for your support and advice and help and

encouragement you give me every season. Having that sort of rugby knowledge on any given

training night and match day gives my side a great advantage. All the other coaches at the Club

should do themselves a big favour and tap into him.

Director of Colts Report 2017

2017 was another successful season for the Randwick Colts program. Leading from the front was

the Third Colts squad that took out the Bill Simpson Shield and were crowned premiers for 2017.

An amazing achievement by a squad of fully committed players who were a true reflection on the

success and depth of our program.

The squad of 2017 was mainly first year players with about 30% returning from the 2016 season.

The first-year players had an energy and enthusiasm that was infectious and the culture amongst

the players was terrific. From November through to August the squad of 80 players gave 100% for

the coaching staff and were a pleasure to work with.

Having players involved in representative programs (Gen Blue 19s, NSW 20s, Australian 20s and

Australian 7s) always makes the start of the season difficult with players coming in and out, and,

teams changing from week to week. However, our players managed to get through the transition

period well and find their stride.

Second Colts led by example in the regular season finishing premiers and averaging a massive 53

points per game. Cruising through the first week of the finals the team faced a Sydney University

team that was keen to get payback for the grand final loss the year before. Leading 22-19 late in

the game, Randwick turned over possession and Sydney University scored in the corner with the

last play of the game. A solid season none the less by a very talented team.

The First Colts made in through to the second week of the finals, however, were outplayed by a

very determined Eastern Suburbs team who managed to get ahead early and maintain their lead.

Finishing the regular season second on the table the First Colts team never really hit full stride

with injuries and dips in form at crucial times of the season. However, the boys never took a

backward step and continued giving everything they had on the training pitch and on each

Saturday.

The Third Colts were the shining light this year by winning the premiership with a dominant display

over Sydney University in the grand final. One of the consistent teams in the competition all year

the boys continued to improve and continued to work hard for each other. Their efforts were

rewarded and full credit to all 60 players who played Third Colts through the year and made the

season so successful.

A big thank you must go to the volunteers that make the program so successful; to the coaching

staff, Nick Hensley, Peter Dumbleton, Tom Hart, Tom Kellaway, Tim Clifford, James Lancaster

and Michael Clarke, that you for your countless hours that you give to the program to ensure the

boys have the best platform for the boys to succeed; to the volunteer S&C staff, Jack Philp and

Tim Lee who were instrumental in the players being physically prepared week in and week out and

lastly a big hand of thanks goes to our managers, Angus Simpson, Grahame Angles and Graham

Neville. A great platform has been set with a large number of first year Colts back in the Colts

program for season 2018.

First Grade Colts Report

Coach: Nick Hensley

Manager: Sam Williamson

Captain: Christian Poidevin

2017 proved to be a frustratingly inconsistent season for the Colts 1 team. Some excellent

performances during the regular season were unfortunately nullified by a poor performance in the

preliminary final against Eastern Suburbs. Notwithstanding this disappointment, a number of

points provide one with a reason to reflect fondly on 2017.

We often spoke to the playing group that (apart from enjoyment) colts rugby wasn't solely about

winning competitions, but rather improving and preparing for grade rugby. I commend the players

for embracing this notion, and I could list several categories of improvement but I'll place a limit on

just one.

The prime example is communication and leadership, arguably two critical skills to a developing

rugby player. The Colts 1 players began the year speaking to and leading one another in a quiet

and passive manner, but finished the year as grade players would be expected to- proactive,

assertive and vocal. It was an area that the players worked extremely hard on, and it really was

something to watch them develop through the year.

54

From a rugby perspective, we are sending some good players to grade which is great news for the

club, and retaining over half of the team with many in key positions. The team received a hiding

early in the year that would've derailed many campaigns, but through their development as men

and their attention to several key areas (e.g. set piece), they managed to put themselves in a

position to move into a grand final. Unfortunately, we had a poorly timed poor performance and

were eliminated.

I hope the players employ the above disappointment as the powerful learning tool it can be, as the

Club will be all the richer for the knowledge they obtain. That, I suppose, will be the true test of

how much they have really developed as individuals.

On behalf of the coaching group I wish them all the very best.

Second Grade Colts Report

Coach: Tom Kellaway

Assistant Coach: Tim Clifford

Manager: Grahame Angles

Captain: Tom Nowlan

After the elation of breaking the shackles off the longest held trophy in Sydney Premier Rugby by

winning the Shell trophy in 2016, the Second Grade Colts team set out to repeat the success of

the prior year. This trophy defence started in mid-November with gruelling pre-season sessions

pushing boys up and down the field and looking to find another gear which was always going to be

required given the target we had painted for ourselves.

Round One came about sooner than anticipated and kicked off in brilliant style with a comfortable

style with a romping 51 point victory over West Harbour. Rounds 2 and 3 were always going to be

a litmus test for the playing group with games against Southern Districts and Sydney University,

both destined to be finals opponents. Southern Districts was a hard-fought slog at Coogee Oval in

blazing sunshine which was won in the closing stages, with classy flyhalf Will Harrison slotting a

late penalty to take a one point victory. This slight moment was carried forward into the Sydney

University clash, where the side put on arguably their best performance of the year, battering the

University team into submission, claiming an emphatic 12-7 victory. The first half of the season

would pass by with no major hurdles, reaching the mid-point undefeated and with one hand on the

minor premiership.

Shortly after crossing the halfway point, the team encountered their first true ambush of the

season on a windy, bleak day at Queens Park. A spirited Eastern Suburbs side pushed the boys

all the way eventually breaking the dam wall late to take the cake 34-19 in the team’s first loss of

the season.

Up to this point in the season, the team had recorded thumping victories across every team in the

competition playing with flair and sheer strength to push teams into submission. The team was led

by an aggressive and sizeable forward pack and backed up with traditional Randwick flair and

style in the outside backs. Winger Jaya Yaonnidis to this point in the season was the club’s

leading try-scorer playing across the Second and Third colts teams, a reflection of the intention of

the side to go forward with power before looking to go wide in search of points.

Following the loss to Eastern Suburbs, the team set about re-establishing the side as the premier

team in the competition. Wins against Warringah, Eastwood, Gordon, West Harbour and

Parramatta saw the team pile on 327 points for with only 39 points scored against.

The minor premiership came down to a last round showdown with Southern Districts at Forshaw

Park. After a rough start, where Souths showed great spirit, particularly in the set piece, the flood

gates opened and the outside backs poured on the points. The end result was a 40-7 hammering

and wrapping up of the Second Colts minor premiership.

57

The finals series, which had been the sides target all year, began with a quarter final clash against

Gordon, at Chatswood Oval. The boys went in with a strong mind set looking to target the set

piece and play a strong field position game. This resulted in a rousing 33-7 victory, with prop

Callum Quinn crossing for his first try of the season in the dying stages off a planned set piece

move. Flyhalf Will Harrison, returning to the side after a lengthy layoff from a fractured ankle

incurred in round 3 was solid leading the team around the park, while the backrow of James

Macaskill, Christian Poidevin and Latham James were immense in piling on pressure and points.

The Semi-final was a rematch of the 2016 decider again at Chatswood Oval. From the outset

Randwick asserted their dominance with bruising hits, and complete annihilation of the University

scrum. Despite this dominance and some questionable decisions from the referees, we were

behind on the score board at half time 12-7, following a late try to Steve Gibson on the stroke of

half time.

The second half started with great momentum following a charge down and try to lock Pat Clifton.

The game would continue to see saw, with another try to No.8 Christian Poidevin after some

strong lead up work by the tight 5. With only seconds remaining, flyhalf Morgan Steyn piloted a

drop goal over to take the lead for the first time in the match 20-17. From the kick-off however,

hearts were broken as University strung together numerous phases after a clever steal and would

score a controversial try after the final siren to take the victory 22-20.

The result was one of the hardest losses to try and swallow particularly given the dominant display

shown by the boys. Despite the result, this side accomplished something that no Randwick

Second colts side has accomplished in many years, claiming the minor premiership and coming

within a whisker of taking the title back to back. The boys should be immensely proud of what they

achieved, particularly the leadership group of Judd Kerrison, Tom Nowlan, Ron Streeter-Mason,

Matt Orpen and Jack Upton. These boys were regulars in the side all season and provided

constant leadership and guidance to the group as they moved up and down each week. Without

their constant support, effort and input the group would never have been able to achieve what it

did.

Particular congratulations go to Steve Gibson who was given the best and fairest award for 2017.

One of the returning team from 2016, Steve was ever consistent and arguably the most reliable

person in the side, turning out the same strong performance week in week out. Also, Will Harrison,

who missed a large portion of the season through injury was a late call up the Australian

Schoolboys squad for the 2017 test series against Fiji and New Zealand. Will is the second player

to have been called into the Australian Schoolboys squad from the Randwick Second Colts side

after Esei Ha’angana achieved the same result in 2016. Esei has since gone on to sign a full

playing contract with the Melbourne Rebels for 2017. These are enormous achievements from

these two boys and something that the coaches and playing group are immensely proud.

Final thanks must go to all of the parents and supporters as well as the Colts coaching team.

These groups of people make the playing and training environment something that the players and

coaches love and make giving up our time an extremely easy decision. The coaching team has

achieved some incredible results over the year and as a group offer one of the premier playing

and learning environments in Sydney Colts rugby. The culture of the group is arguable the best we

have ever been a part of and much of this credit must go to Travis Partridge and the senior playing

group.

58

2018 promises to be a season full of challenges, yet offers up the tantalizing prize of reclaiming

the Shell Trophy and bringing it back where it belongs, on the sidelines of Coogee Oval.

Third Grade Colts Report

Coaches: James Lancaster and Michael Clarke

Manager: Graham Neville

Captain: Darcy Searl

A lot of new faces arrived at the Club this year. They were well required after last year’s

graduates left to play grade for the Club. The bench of players was not getting any smaller and for

some weeks Michael Clarke and myself were scratching our heads as to how we were going to

get everyone fair game time. I do not think we missed a week where we did not use all ten

substitutes during a game. Since Michael and myself started coaching last year the talent we had

to work with every week amazed us. Players last year like Joe Whitelock who played almost all

season in Third Grade Colts is now playing Second Grade. I also believe Joe sat on the bench for

First Grade during the season. The flow of talent inevitably resulted in the best attack and defence

record in the competition, with a +365 points difference. This difference is larger than any other

team in the entire competition in any grade.

Last year the team fell short in the semi-final. This year we were determined to go one step

further. A tough draw against Eastern Suburbs in week one was enough to get the team in the

semi-final against Eastwood where everything just clicked into place. We won the game

convincingly 36-14, and, we all knew we were ready to take down Sydney University in the

following week. Unfortunately, we had Latham Park to ourselves that week. It was not ideal as the

boys in all grades get on so well and love hanging out with their mates at training. The boys from

First and Second Grade Colts who were eliminated the week before still turned up to training with

the Third Grade Colts and run oppose work with the team. That is the Colts culture that Travis

Partridge, Nick Hensley, Peter Dumbleton, Tom Hart, Tom Kellaway, Tim Clifford, Michael Clarke

and myself worked so hard to put together.

On grand final day, I arrived at Concord Oval around 9am. I could sense today was “the day”. The

players, Michael and myself were nervous, but, at the same time we were doing all the usual

joking around and enjoying a bit of banter to keep ourselves relaxed.

There were bits of the game that stood out more than other parts of the game, but watching Max

Rivers run 95 meters to score an intercept try was very special. (Max make sure you thank Tim

Lane for ensuring you run all those coat hangers this year). The final score in the grand final was

29-12 against Sydney University. The team literally blew Sydney University off the park. I actually

think the team could have hung around and played Sydney University Second Grade Colts team

and pick up another premiership on the day. That is how good everything felt.

“Randwick Third Grade Colts Premiers in 2017”

Special thanks goes to Di Long and the physio team for sticking the boys back together again

when they needed it, and to Tim Lee and Mick Stephen for making them fitter and stronger each

week.

See you in 2018.

Reports from Randwick Junior Village Clubs

Clovelly JRFC Report

As the weather warms, another season passes into history and, once again, in our own little way,

the Clovelly Eagles continue to contribute to the fabric that makes up the foundations of the game

called Rugby. Through the efforts of the Coaches, Managers and helpers that give their valued

time to the Club, almost 300 kids have commenced or continued their journey along the rugby trail

that will take them in so many different directions. Some will go on to higher levels, some will

continue to play for enjoyment and some will pursue other things but, at the least, I hope it has

given our kids access to lasting friendships and a feeling of what it’s like to be part of a team. As

an example of those who have gone from the Eagles to achieve higher honours we had the

incredible news this year that the Australian Schoolboys team contained, not one, not two but four

former Eagles players with Finn Wright, Ben Donaldson, Will Harrison and Marco Bell all selected

for the most prestigious honour in Junior Rugby. This is an incredible reflection on the calibre of

coaching and support those boys received during their own development journey, along which the

Club can proudly say it played its part. I challenge anyone to deny it as unprecedented

representation from any Club remotely near our size. Congratulations also to those players in our

66

older age groups who enjoyed representative honours for Randwick this year and thanks for those

who helped with the organisation at this level. On the field, the Club enjoyed mixed success

across the age groups with some teams featuring at the pointy end while others had a year that

could best be described as ‘character building’. While the kids will learn from both scenarios we do

strive to make the game as enjoyable as possible for the players as we collectively balance

competitiveness with access for all abilities. The Club exists to facilitate and encourage enjoyable

participation in Junior Rugby for the maximum number of kids possible. Our only measure of

success should be the percentage of players who want to come back and play with us next year

and, I hope, whatever we do as Committee, Coaches and parents continues to keep this as a

cornerstone value at the Eagles. As always, when handed a pen or microphone, I cannot help but

emphasise the appreciation for the dedication our Coaches and Managers put into our kids. On

behalf of all the parents, please believe your efforts do not go unnoticed. You may be surprised by

how long you will be remembered by the players and I like the picture of one or two of them, by

way of thanks, shaking your hand in the street in a dozen years’ time, or maybe even buying you a

drink. On that note, as our Under 12s go on to other rugby paths, the season will likely see the end

of a chapter as a couple of our longest standing Coaches and Managers complete this dedicated

service to the kids under their charge for so long. Josh Smith and John and Maureen Andrews,

ably assisted by Ben Larsson through the later years, have taken their charges from 6 or 7 years

of age through their entire Eagles career and much gratitude is owed for the many hundreds of

hours you have given so freely to the boys. Many thanks also to all of our Committee members

who work behind the scenes to allow the season to ‘just happen’. A particular gratitude from a

generation of parents must go to long-term Committee member, Deb Johnson. With the youngest

of Deb’s three sons, Sam, finishing in Under 12s this year, she will complete her remarkable

contribution to this Club in various capacities over a period of 12 years. The sheer number of

devoted hours, mostly out of the limelight, would equate to months and months of work over this

time. Deb has always been a ‘safe pair of hands’ for anything she undertakes, she can be relied

on as a ‘keeper of knowledge’ when questions arise about the Club’s recent history and she will be

missed. We appreciated the return of long-term sponsors in Shane Vincent, from Belle Property

Randwick, and the Clovelly Hotel and gratefully welcomed a new major sponsor this year in Foster

Finance. What was even more pleasing was to have it be someone from within the Eagles family.

Many thanks to Will Foster for making the game more affordable for all and for saving us from

endless chook raffles. In closing, I sincerely hope everyone involved with this great Club had fun

this year (if any parents didn’t, you must not have been at the Social Night) and I hope to see you

all back next year after a safe and enjoyable summer.

Coogee Junior Rugby Report

2017 has been a great year for the Coogee Seahorses, both on and off the field. We fielded 14 teams in

total from U6-U12 with approximately 170 kids playing for the Seahorses every weekend. Games were

generally played in good spirit with no major incidents reported. Coogee continues to play the game of

rugby the way we believe it is meant to be played, with the emphasis being on participation and the kids

having fun.

The Minis enjoyed a great year at Nagle Park on Saturday mornings with everything running very smoothly

thanks to the great efforts of Dave and Jane Caple as well as all the referees. Special thanks also need to

go to John Kennedy for his assistance with referees at Nagle throughout the year.

Coogee had a team from all three Junior age groups, U10, U11 and U12 play in semi-finals with U12’s

making it into the Grand Final and losing narrowly. All our teams are to be congratulated on their

achievements this year with enormous improvement being shown across all age groups.

An area the club paid particular attention to in 2017 was our connection with Randwick seniors. Attendance

at Randwick home games was encouraged and resulted in a great number of Seahorses at Coogee Oval.

This is an area we will look to build on in 2018.

Our 45-year tradition of rotating tours with Souths Brisbane was continued in 2017 with Souths coming to

Sydney in late September. Everyone enjoyed a great weekend of socialising and rugby with 120 Souths

players and supporters coming to Sydney for the weekend. We look forward to touring Brisbane in 2018.

Off the field Coogee is in good shape. We had a good year of fundraising and sponsorship and have

healthy financials. We are very happy with the spirit in the club and have established a good committee for

2018. Coogee will be looking to build the club going forward and hopefully field more teams in the coming

years. 2018 marks the 60th anniversary of Coogee Junior Rugby Club and we will be looking to celebrate

this throughout the year.

Maroubra Juniors Report

The Maroubra Missiles Junior Rugby Union Club enjoyed a fun 2017 season fielding eight teams

in the U6, U7, U8, U9, U10 and U12 age groups. That’s an increase of four teams in the last two

years, which has been a great result for the Club.

The Club is fortunate to have a number of sponsors and their continued support enables the club

to allow Maroubra Missiles to provide an opportunity for kids to play rugby. The financial support

given allows the Club to acquire the uniforms, match balls and training gear that is vital to the

running of the club. The Club continues to provide an equity fund which is used to support kids

who, if not for the fund, would not be able to play the game they love. A big thank you to all our

sponsors, Benny and the Pets Veterinarian Service, Eastern Suburbs Smash Repairs, NSW

Contracting and Nicholson & Saville Food Purveyor.

The Club hosted their traditional annual trivia night at South Maroubra Surf Club. The night is an

occasion for the parents of the Club who support their kids every training night, every game and

every injury to socialise and let their hair down. It is a tradition worth keeping.

At the end of the season the U12s travelled to Canberra for a Rugby Gala Day. The kids acquitted

themselves well, winning more games than they lost, and had an opportunity to get together away

from the rugby field.

Last, but not least, a big thank you goes to the coaches and managers who put so much in every

week and to the committee and parents who have helped with canteen and BBQ duties. Life-long

friendships are formed and giving back is worthwhile. With most of the committee having their

boys moving onto U13 with Myrtle Green Warriors and school commitments, a new committee is

forming for future years. We wish Maroubra Missiles in 2018 all the best!!!

South Coogee Junior RUFC “Red Devils” Report

Firstly I would like to thank the South Coogee Committee. The support they have given the Club and me over the year has been amazing, this is not just limited to canteen duty and game days but all that is involved in running a successful junior rugby club. A big thankyou also to the Coaches, Managers and helpers of all our teams from U6s to U12s inclusive, who have helped make this year a success. It is such a rewarding experience being able to help our up and coming sporting superstars. This year we had four of our teams make the final series with our U11s Red team taking out the premiership in a wet hard fought game against Coogee Seahorses, it was a great game from both sides and I was very happy to be there to watch our boys all come together as a team and take out the cup. I would also like to say a big thankyou to our two major sponsors this season who were Marnie Seinor McGrath Real Estate and Don Small Goods, we are very thankful for your continued support over this year and all the previous years also. We look forward to having you on board next year. I am looking forward to another great season in 2018 and I am sure that our little club will keep growing and building in numbers. Heather Marshall South Coogee President

72

Randwick Myrtle Green Warriors

The Club is the only club in the Randwick District offering teenage club rugby, which is only played

on Sundays in Sydney. Transition from Under 12 to Under 13 club rugby was always hit and miss

over the years and this led to the development of the Club in 2013 as a club dedicated to teenage

club rugby.

A lot of hard work goes into the Under 12/13 transition particularly educating the parents and

players at the four junior clubs that there is life under Under 12 rugby. This year’s transition was

successful as we fielded two Under 13 teams, a Green team in A/B Division and a White team in C

Division. Both teams reached the final series.

In 2016 the Club only fielded one Under 13 team, which played in C Division. 2017 saw an

explosion of interest in rugby as that year group fielded two teams in Under 14s: a Green team in

the B Division and a White team in C Division. The Green team won the B Division Grand Final

against Blacktown in front of a very healthy crowd at Nagle Park. In fact, the Club hosted the

Under 14 Divisional Grand Finals for the Under 14s. A watershed moment for the Club.

The Club fielded a team in the Under 15s which played finals footy. Teams were also fielded in the

Under 16s and Opens.

A major issue for the Club is recruitment and the Under 12/13 transition is, to a certain extent, the

lifeblood of the Club: two healthy squads in the Under 13s will lead to strong numbers going

forward. Another issue is widening the net of recruitment. A telling statistic in the 14s is that out of

the 46 players registered, only two were from local state schools. So, the Club and Randwick

Rugby can definitely work towards fulfilling the potential offered by the state schools in the area.

All in all, it was a very successful year as player numbers were up from 70 to 150, teams

increased from three in 2016 to seven this year and it was the first time the Club fielded an Opens

team.

Of course, many of the Club’s players represented the district and beyond in the representative

scene, which no doubt will be covered in the Randwick Juniors report.

The Club works closely with the Randwick Seniors, Randwick Academy and Randwick Juniors

and the Club would like to thank them for their continued support.

I would like to thank the sponsors: Mellick Wealth Management, Your State Agency, McGrath Real

Estate Agency, Addisons Advisory and Bakker Built.

Last but not least, I would like to thank the players, parents and coaches/team management for

their dedication and passion for our great game.

Randwick Juniors Report

2017 was another fantastic year with an increase in numbers of juniors taking the fields in a variety

of competitions across age groups 6-18 years. Randwick Juniors are extremely appreciative of the

presence of each and every volunteer across all village clubs who man the BBQ each week.

Without their generous support the clubs would need to find other means to raise funds to help get

our kids on the field each week. A special thanks is sent out from all junior village clubs, parents

and players to the Randwick Rugby Foundation. Without this specific ongoing support we would

not have any kids playing rugby in our district.

Minis: The Randwick / Easts combined minis comp was once again a fantastic success. All age

groups from U6 through to U9 were well represented by all clubs.

U6 featured a mighty 14 teams, U7 had 13 teams, U8 had 19 teams and U9 had 14 teams. As

trialled in 2016, each age group was permitted to have an additional two players on the field at any

time which in turn gave all of the players more game time and most teams took up the opportunity.

(All teams were still forced to match the opposition numbers so there were no advantages). A big

thanks goes to the SJRU team for doing the draw to get these kids on the field.

Minis Gala Day: RDJRU hosted a minis carnival this year at Nagle Park. All age groups were

represented strongly and we welcomed out of district clubs coming over to play as well. The day

was fantastic and all feedback was positive. Well done to all of our volunteers for hosting and

arranging a very successful day.

Juniors: The juniors truly are a Sydney-wide competition consisting of a Friday night and Sunday

comp. The Friday comp is mostly played out of Latham and Nagle parks as both locations have

two grounds. The Friday night comp consists of teams from the Randwick, Easts, Canterbury,

West Harbour and Petersham areas and most age groups consist of more than eight teams

allowing for both cup and plate finals. Randwick District hosted the finals series at Latham Park

and Grand Finals for the U14s at Nagle Park.

Sunday Comp: With the huge effort put into recruiting by the Randwick Warriors coaching staff

and office bearers we witnessed the Club grow by more than 100% in 2017. This year the

Warriors had teams in the following age groups: U13 x 2, U14 x 2, U15, U16 and Opens.

No-one I speak with around the grounds can recall the last time Randwick Juniors fielded an

opens team. This is a great testament to the current people working across the Randwick District

in recruiting players. Thank you to these outstanding supporters and enablers of junior rugby.

Special congratulations here must go to Heather Marshal who single-handed recruited a team’s

worth of players for the U15s. This team ran short on players for most of the year but were able to

76

make the semis only to fall short at the end of the game to miss out on the grand final. Our U14B

division team performed well all year and were successful in taking out the Cup in this division.

Well done to all coaching staff and of course the players for a successful year.

All other age groups performed well across the year with almost all on show during the semis.

Representative Teams: We were fortunate enough to again submit 2 x U10 and 2 x U11 teams to

this year’s NSWJRU development competitions. All four teams went through their respective

comps almost undefeated. If we can keep these players in rugby we will have strong showings for

the future. With Jim Dubos’ hard work and the current crop of talented coaches coming through we

are very excited for the future.

At the NSWJRU State Championships on the June long weekend we were able to field teams in

the U12, 13, 14 and 16 age groups and also an U17 team combined with players from the

Illawarra District. The U12 went all the way this year, appearing in the final only to go down after a

very strong showing. Well done to all involved. Our U16 team was our Randwick Warriors U16

team. With no other clubs carrying a team the boys switched gear from RW to Randwick and

although beaten by obvious rep teams in all games the boys put up a mighty effort.

Randwick Junior Rugby Academy: Now in its sixth year the Academy is a benchmark for all

other districts. No one can compete with ours. With Jim Dubos’ commitment and hard work we

have a range of coaches from clubs to ex-Wallabies coaching our kids on the finer points of rugby.

The real mark of success for this development program is that we have seen academy members

graduate to all levels of the Randwick Colts program and also to the Australian Schools Barbarian

team in 2017. The Australian School Boys team recruited three of our junior players this year with

Will Harrison captaining the side throughout the tournament. Will was a Randwick Junior and was

an inaugural participant in the Academy.

2016 saw the introduction of our girls into the academy training alongside the boys. The girls

trained well and their numbers have increased for 2017/2018.

There are a number of people and businesses that have contributed to the Juniors this year and I

would like to acknowledge their support as without it we would not have a juniors program.

To Chris Dunn, Juniors Treasurer, for keeping us afloat and the books balanced. Also for your liaison with the Foundation and seniors.

The Randwick Foundation for ongoing investment in our juniors with every cent going directly into running costs for the juniors participation.

To our young band of junior referees turning up every Saturday morning to give our minis the best experience possible. Some of our referees come down to referee just one game and then go off to play school sports. Without that effort our coaches would be reffing in addition to coaching on a Saturday morning.

To our sponsors, which include Bakker Built, Traffic Plan Professionals and Mambo.

Jim Dubos for his tireless efforts with our rep and development program, and also the summer Junior Academy.

And lastly but not least to all of the Clubs and their band of merry volunteers for making the season such an easy one for me personally.

Randwick Magic U12s

Randwick Magic Girls 7s Rugby

The Club offers a full time program for all year round training in 7s rugby and competing in local,

national and international competitions. The Club is also partnering with local high schools

Matraville Sports High School. Recruitment has been mainly word of mouth.

Following success at the Las Vegas 7s, a good number of those girls have graduated to the NSW

7s teams with the Club supporting 8 junior members and 9 seniors in the state squads. The

excitement continues as following a 10 week break the girls return to training to prepare for the

Hong Kong 7s where they team will be competing by invitation.

The Club trains at Latham Park and Nagle Park, Maroubra. In 2017 we had nearly 125 registered

players ranging from under 10s to opens, forming 2 x U10s teams, 2 x U12s teams, 2 x U14s

teams, 2 x U16s teams and an U18s team.

Teams were entered in the following tournaments, Southern Highland 7s, (U16s Plate 2nd Place,

U18s Plate 2nd place, Opens Plate 2nd place), the NSW U15 NSW State Cup, Winners U17s and

Opens NSW State Cup (U17 was 5th Place, Opens Plate 2nd place) Central Coast 7s (U17 5th

Place, Opens 9th Place – with a tough draw against international teams). The girls also competed

in the Sydney Sizzling 7s and also played exhibition games at Coogee Oval prior to First grade

fixtures.

78

The opens team is travelling to Dubai in December to compete in the Dubai International 7s event

and will face teams including England Development, Ireland Development, Russia, Belgium,

Germany and Denmark.

Thanks goes to all the players, their families and supporters, our volunteers, coaches and

managers. Bring on 2018!

Randwick Junior Rugby Academy

The Academy was formed at the end of 2012 season. A committee comprising Wade Kelly, the

2013 First Grade Coach, Wallabies Simon Poidevin and Steve Hoiles with Jim Dubos the

Randwick Junior Development manager.

We recruited former Randwick players Geoff James, Stu Donaldson and Rod Willey to help the

above with the coaching. Geoff, Stu, Rod plus Simon are still coaching at the Academy.

The first year we had 60 boys training. In the second half of the program Randwick senior club

supplied training shirts for the boys. We have come a long way in the last 6 years. This year we

will have 220 players in the Academy including 26 girls. We have a pool of 30 coaches.

The Academy is self-funded with every squad member and coach receiving a training top and

Randwick District Rugby Union Football Club Inc

2017 Treasurers Report

The attached Profit & Loss report and Balance Sheet for the financial year ended 30 September 2017

continues the improved financial consistency developed by the club over the past four years. The Club

results show an operating profit $29,828 (2016 $15,664) an improvement of 90%. Driven by improved cash

sponsorship income of 18% while gate and concession income increased by 20% & 27% respectively.

The Club produced a Net Financial Profit after depreciation ($10,000) of $19,828 (2016 $5,664) an

increase of 250%. The Club continues to improve its strong financial position with cumulative retained

funds including reserves standing at $194,660

As mentioned previously the improved performance in 2017 is primarily a result of increased sponsorship.

The Club introduced a new major naming rights sponsor in Suttons City Hyundai and Suttons has agreed

to extend sponsorship of the Club for a further two years.

The renewal of this sponsorship between two great brands, Suttons City Hyundai and Randwick Rugby

is testimony to the support our patrons and members have brought to the partnership.

Other new sponsors in 2017 including Royal Randwick - Australian Turf Club, The Randwick Club and

Rohrig Builders also contributed to this increase.

Without the ongoing contribution, from these new sponsors and existing sponsors University New South

Wales, Maloney Grocers, ADCO, Cartwright Insurance, ESV Accounting, Bendigo Clovelly

Community Bank, FTI Consulting, Coates Hire, Girvan Waugh, Bell Potter, Victor Sports Tapes,

Building Partners, KMB Business Advisors, Paddington Prestige Motors, Nura Gili (UNSW), Walsh

Pharmacy, and Sphere Communications, we would not be able to represent the Randwick District with

such distinction.

A special mention must go to the Randwick City Council for valuable ongoing support at Coogee Oval

with the rebuilding of the Senior Citizens’ Centre which has provided us with a first-class facility to service

our sponsors and the re-development at Latham Park with an all-weather synthetic surface.

A special mention must also go to sponsor and leading sports medical team lead by Dr Paul Raftos,

Eastside Physiotherapy Di Long and Neck Safe Rugby Doctor Adrian Cohen who are tireless in their

support and efforts to provide a safe playing environment for the players and the development of a world-

leading concussion testing and treatment program.

Gate and Concessional income continued to improve in 2017 especially with the increased interest patrons

are showing in “Club” rugby. Revenue from Coogee Oval increased from $117,748 to $145,757 (+24%).

Special thanks goes to Field to Fork (Paula and Gary Horwitz and Paul Miller) for their tireless efforts in

ensuring quality provision of food and beverages on grade and colts match days. Their efforts along with

the support from Coogee Bay Hotel as our beverage sponsor has played a large part in the Club providing

a improved experience for all our patrons. Their support and dedication is very much appreciated.

Costs have generally been held to budget and are in line with the previous year after taking into account

the rugby development strategy implemented over the last four years.

83

The following table compares key financial data.

2017 2016 2015 2014

RR Foundation $65,000 $65,000 $100,000 $200,000

Grants ARU/NSWRU Nil Nil Nil $39,000

Net Fundraising Profit $65,117 $73,119 $57,759 $31,847

Operating Profit $29,828 $15,664 $(88,234) $11,934

Net Profit $19,828 $5,664 $(78,234) $6,934

We thank the Randwick Rugby Foundation for its continued support and contribution throughout the

district in 2017.The RRF provided the seniors with $65,000 and the junior body with $35,000. The

Randwick Rugby Club also assisted the juniors in providing 50 footballs and 5 new marquees, one for each

junior club and for use during representative matches.

The Board thanks our loyal sponsors and donors for their continued financial support. Special thanks go to

those who contributed monies to the scholarship fund and to those who individually donated money to the

Club’s “Tax deductible” Randwick Rugby Development Fund administered through the Australian

Sports Foundation. Without this ongoing support, the club would not be able to invest in the development

of our colts and the future schools program. The Board also thanks all our loyal volunteers, coaching staff,

support staff, representative players and supporters. Whether coaching Juniors, managing grade players,

photographing colts or simply flocking to Coogee Oval, your efforts and support is invaluable.

I recommend to you for approval the attached Profit and Loss report, Balance Sheet and Annual report for

Comments: The above guidelines can be found in By-law 6 of the Club’s By-laws. The Life Members

Association must vet and make recommendations to the Council of members considered worthy for

election as a Life Member pursuant to Rule 5(4) of the Club Rules. This Rule refers to the power of the

Club to elect Honorary Life Members. The Association is aided by its own Awards Subcommittee which

carries out preparatory work and reviews nominees for consideration as Life Members. The

Subcommittee, where possible, makes its recommendations to the Life Members Association which, in

turn, forwards its advice to the Randwick Rugby Council. The Council then decides, based on a three

fourths majority vote of Councillors, which names, if any, are put to the Annual General Meeting for

election by Members where, again, a three-fourths majority is required by secret ballot.

The Wally Meagher Memorial Trophy

The recipient shall be a player possessing the qualities of sportsmanship, courage and modesty. He

should display a willingness to subordinate his personal interest to those of his Fellows and his Team

and generously others along the pathway of Rugby and along the broader highway of life.

RDRUFC Annual Report 2017

102

Comments: Any member may nominate a player for this award though, in practice, such nomination

usually comes from a group of senior players referred to as the Player Committee. The nomination(s)

are put to the Life Members Association which makes a recommendation to the Randwick Rugby

Council. The Council is the final arbiter with respect to this award and does so based on a three fourths

majority vote by Councillors. As with the Life Member nominations the Association’s Awards

Subcommittee plays an intermediary role in terms of preparatory work and reviews with respect to

nominees for this award. The Wally Meagher Memorial Trophy is not necessarily awarded annually.

Randwick Rugby Hall of Fame

The criteria for consideration and inclusion in the Randwick Rugby Hall of Fame are:

The inductee must have been a distinguished Randwick First Grade Player

The inductee must have made a considerable contribution to the game of Rugby and to Randwick

The inductee must have enhanced his and Randwick’s reputation by his ability, sportsmanship

and character

Comments: Any member may nominate a potential inductee. In practice, however, such nominations

are usually considered by the Life Members Association and forwarded to a Hall of Fame Committee

comprising the Club President, a Convener appointed by the Randwick Rugby Council, the Club

Archivist and two other Council appointees. The final decision regarding inductees rests with the

Council. The inductees are selected by a vote supported by three fourths of the Councilors.

Meritorious Service Award

The criteria for the presentation of the Meritorious Service Award are that the recipient should be a non-

playing member who has rendered outstanding service to the Randwick Football Club.

Comments: Any member may nominate another member for this Award. Nominations are then put to

the Life Members Association which makes recommendations to the Randwick Rugby Council. The

Association is assisted by its Awards Subcommittee which gathers information on the nominees and

conducts preliminary reviews. The Council makes the final decision on this Award based on a vote by

Councilors requiring a three fourths majority. The Award is not necessarily presented annually.

The WT (Bill) Outterside Memorial Trophy

The recipient shall be a player acknowledged by his team-mates for his commitment to fitness,

willingness to learn, loyalty to his fellows and to his Club and dedication to mastering the fundamentals

of the Randwick Brand of Rugby.

Comments: Unlike all other awards this trophy is judged by the Player Committee and not by the

coaches or other Club officials. The Committee includes the Club Captain and the Player

Representative on the Randwick Rugby Council. The Trophy is awarded annually.

RDRUFC Annual Report 2017

103

The Ron Don Memorial Trophy

The Ron Don Memorial Trophy is awarded to the most improved player in the Club.

Comments: This Trophy was introduced in 1967 to honour Ron Don for his dedicated service to the

Club and his continuous support of the players. He was Honorary Timekeeper 1955-59 and Assistant

Honorary Secretary from 1957 until his death in April, 1967. Ron Don served in both positions 1957-59.

Each year the winner of this Trophy is decided upon by the Club Coach and Assistant Coaches.

The Dick Quinlan Trophy

The Dick Quinlan Memorial Trophy is awarded to the best clubman in Fourth Grade.

Comments: Presented to the Club by Dick Quinlan in 1962 this Trophy is awarded annually.

The donor did this in order to focus attention on the players in the, then, lowest grade. He, himself,

never played above this level but was proud to be a former Randwick player. Following his retirement

Dick Quinlan gave many years of service to the Easts-Randwick JRU as a coach with the Randwick

Central Club and later as its President. The recipient of this Trophy is decided upon by the Fourth

Grade Coach and Manager. Dick Quinlan passed away in 1975.

The Laurie Argue Memorial Trophy

The Laurie Argue Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Grade Team that scores the most number of tries

in a season.

Comments: Promoted by the Life Members Association, the establishment of the Laurie Argue

Memorial Trophy was endorsed by the Randwick Rugby Council. The Trophy serves to perpetuate the

memory of Laurie Argue, a long-time and enthusiastic devotee of the running game. It is designed to

recognise the team(s) that scores the most tries in a season and the respective coach(es). The

selection of the team(s) is determined from the Team Sheets completed by the Managers and the

cumulative records of the Club Statistician.

The Aiden Wilson Memorial Trophy

The Aiden Wilson Memorial Trophy recognises the best Colts Clubman of the year.

Comments: This Trophy was designed to honour the memory of Aiden Wilson, a talented inside centre

who played in the Randwick Under 19 Colts Team of 2006. Tragically, he was killed in an unfortunate

incident on Sydney Harbour on 25 November 2006. The recipient is decided annually by a joint decision

made by the Colts Coordinator and Colts Coaches.

The remaining Club Awards are determined on the basis of the following two criteria:

Statistics kept on Manager Team Sheets and the records of the Club Statistician

Committees: the Club Coach and Assistant Coaches for Seniors and the Colts Coordinator and

Team Coaches for the Colts.
