2 AREA OF APPLICATION

The development of internet applications has risen dramatically in recent years. In the digital age, the workplace is connected, mobile and decentralised. New data-intensive applications such as cloud storage, IP telephony, video streaming or smart home services are also increasingly in demand and use in the residential sector. However, such models can only function with fast internet connections. The availability of powerful broadband connections has now established itself as a location factor for families, trade and employers. When choosing a location, 95 % of all companies place particular importance on the availability of high-speed networks. Timely data transfer is particularly essential for medium-sized companies and for private individuals. The quality of life and location within cities and communities today crucially depends on fast data lines.

With an optical fibre connection into buildings, transfer speeds have reached up to 1000 Mbit/s and have created new possibilities for use. No other technology is more future-proof or currently offers such high unshared and symmetrical bandwidths as optical fibre.

The majority of today's networks are based on DSL and VDSL connections, which will no longer be able to cope with the extreme increase in data volumes in future. The worldwide exponential rise in IP traffic makes investment in optical fibre-based networks inevitable.

As part of development programmes, undersupplied areas in the industrial sector and residential sector will be equipped with powerful broadband connections over the coming years.

Before providing complete supply with optical fibre cables, there are several intermediate stages involving a combination of copper cable and optical fibre cable:

FTTC – Fibre to the Curb"Fibre to the Curb"Fibre optic cables are installed up to the distribution point (cable branch). The connections to customers are then established using copper cabling. The greater the distance between the distribution point and house connection, the smaller the bandwidth due to the high damping rate of copper. Conventional VDSL2 infrastructure.

FTTB – fibre to the Building"Fibre to the Building" Fibre optic cable ends within the building at the TP (termination point) – normally in the basement.Copper cabling is implemented on the last few metres to the subscriber connection.

FTTH – Fibre to the Home "Fibre to the Home/to the subscriber connection"

KVz/MFG

KVz/MFG

The RAUSPEED microduct system for the FTTX sector provides the best opportunity to develop what is known as the "last mile".

Microducts protect the delicate Fibre optic cables and therefore create the foundation for a broadband network. In addition to the duct programme, the RAUSPEED microduct system offers an intelligent system solution for constructing broadband networks with its well-engineered range of fittings and moulded parts as well as wall entry, identification technology and dedicated tools.

The ingenious, coordinated complete system together with maximum quality standards guarantee long-term operational safety and a system that can be relied upon for many years to come.

3 MATERIALS

3.1 Microduct

The microducts are made using RAU-PE 3204.

Material properties at 23 °C:- Average density: > 0.94 g/cm³- Coefficient of linear expansion: 0.2 mm/m x K- Thermal conductivity: 0.41 WK-1m -1

- Modulus of elasticity: Short term: min. 800 N/mm² Long-term: min. 160 N/mm²

- Specific surface resistance: > 1012 Ω- Internal pressure test: 170 h/80 °C/4 N/mm2

- UV resistance: 3 years central Europe climate according to EN ISO 4892-2

Fire behaviour:- RAU-PE has normal flame-resistance according to DIN 4102, class B2

3.2 Duct bundle sheathing

The sheathing is made of RAU-PP.

Material properties- Average density: > 0.9 g/cm3

- Coefficient of linear expansion: 0.14 mm/m x K- Thermal conductivity: 0.2 WK-1 m-1

- Modulus of elasticity: Short term: min. 1250 N/mm² Long-term: min. 310 N/mm²

- Specific surface resistance: > 1012 Ω- UV resistance: 3 years central Europe climate

according to EN ISO 4892-2

Fire behaviour:- RAU-PP has normal flame-resistance according to DIN 4102, class B2

Why PP as sheath material? The material Polypropylen (PP) provides more than

50% higher yield stress (PP: 33 N/mm²) than a PE-HD with only approx. 20 N/mm². This means that a thinner wall thickness can be used for the same tensile strength of the material. This makes it easier to open the duct bundle sheath for house connections and reduces the risk of damage. In case of RAUSPEED Xtreme the extra thick sheath contributes considerably to the tensile strength and the protection of the micro ducts during HDD drilling.

4 IDENTIFICATION

4.1 RAUSPEED microduct

The identification of the microducts made from PE-HD is carried out using permanent, abrasion-resistant inkjet printing at 1 m distance with the following information:

- Manufacturer and range of use: REHAU RAUSPEED- Material: HDPE- Outer diameter / inner diameter in mm: 7 / 4- Production date (day, month, year): e.g. 15/01/2020- Shift- Machine- Meterage: e.g. 001 m

Translucent colour to identify occupation, with coloured stripes.

The microducts in duct bundles are marked with two coextruded, opposing coloured stripes and with the corresponding duct number at intervals of 10 cm for identification. In doing so, each microduct can be clearly allocated to a building in the design and installation process. For identification the microducts within duct bundles are extruded with two opposing coloured strips and for additional security with the respective duct number signed at every 10 cm intervals. Thus, during design and installation each microduct can be assigned to the respective building.

4.2 RAUSPEED duct bundle

PP microduct bundles are identified using permanent inkjet marking at intervals of 1 m with the following information:

- Manufacturer and range of use: REHAU RAUSPEED- Number of ducts x outer diameter / wall thickness in mm: 12 x 10 / 6- Production date (day, month, year): e.g. 15/01/2020- Shift- Machine- Meterage: e.g. 001 m- Additionally every 10 cm the corresponding duct number

4.3 Colour coding

The following tables show the two possible colour codes for the individual duct numbers in the bundle. This colour sequence applies to all duct bundle variants. To guarantee clear assignment and documentation during planning and on the construction site, please refer to Documentation for microduct house connections on page 52.

RAUSPEED empty optical fibre cabinetAboveground optical fibre cabinets are the starting point for the last mile and easy-to-access distribution points in passive optical networks. An optical fibre cabinet contains both the incoming feeder cables and the outgoing duct bundles or microducts which branch out to the customer. The individual fibre optical cables are generally blown in from the optical fibre cabinet.

The optical fibre cabinet can be first used as an empty housing if a passive duct network is built without installing any fibre optical cables initially. Duct management and splice cassettes can be easily retrofitted to the cabinet at a later stage. The empty cabinet ensures a clean termination and protects empty ducts until they are occupied.

Characteristics of the empty cabinet:- Weather and corrosion-resistant- IP54 protection rating (dust- and water-tight) with roof waterproofing- Finish coating in RAL 7038 (agate grey), anti-graffiti paint- Base with defined breaking point (to protect against impact from a

vehicle)- Housing can be easily replaced if damaged - Sleeves to absorb tractive force from the duct bundles in the base- Door with lever locking system - Fully separable and recyclable- Deutsche Telekom AG approved

Advantage of an empty optical fibre cabinet:- Clean termination for duct bundles above ground

- Tidy streetspace- Easily accessible for subsequent network operators/blow-in- No head hole required at a later stage- Easy to feed the ducts into the housing thanks to the open

trench during installation of the cabinet.

8 INSTALLING MICRODUCTS

8.1 General information

RAUSPEED microducts are to be installed by suitable specialists under qualified supervision. It is particularly important to only use personnel to install and fit RAUSPEED microducts and accessories who have been trained on how to handle the material correctly. REHAU offers complimentary installer workshops and additionally on-site training to ensure correct installation.

During installation work, it is essential to observe trade association and work safety regulations, road traffic

regulations, general technical construction regulations and all applicable laws and ordinances.

8.2 Transport, storage and uncoiling

Transport- The drums should be transported on suitable vehicles and loaded

and unloaded correctly. - The duct bundles are sealed with heat-shrink caps and the

microducts with transport caps to prevent them to become dirty.- Point loading and contact with sharp objects must be avoided during

transport.- The drums should always be transported on the supplied drum

support frame. Thanks to the special drum support frame with a protective guard, forklift forks can be inserted under the duct bundles on both sides without damaging the ducts.

Storage- All materials must be stored so that they cannot become

contaminated or damaged. - The ends of the microducts in duct bundles must always be securely

sealed during storage to prevent water from penetrating and dirt from entering (RAUSPEED transport caps or heat-shrink caps for temporary, sand-tight enclosure; RAUSPEED end caps for longer-term, pressure-tight seal).

- The drums should be stored on the supplied drum support frame on level ground or suitable supports to prevent the ducts getting into contact with the ground.

- You must prevent any damage and deformation to the ducts as this may reduce the blow-in lengths and performance.

RAUSPEED microducts are UV-stabilised and can be stored outdoors for three years in Central Europe. The duct bundles are delivered with a white UV-protection film, which guarantees full UV protection for ducts when the film is removed and means they can be stored outdoors longer until installation starts.

34

The drums come with an information sign when delivered, which displays the guidelines for transport, storage and drum handling in a clear way.

TemperaturesThe following temperatures are to be observed:Transport and storage: –10 to +50 °CInstallation: –10 to +50 °CBlowing-in: – 5 to +35 °COptimal installation and blow-in: + 5 to +20 °C

- The individual ducts should be protected against direct sunlight, despite the integral UV protection, if they are stored outdoors for several months (e.g. by covering with light-coloured foil or UV protection film).

- At temperatures >50 °C, low mechanical loads could result in deformations; the material must not be exposed to any impact loads at < -15 °C.

- At temperatures below zero, it is more difficult to handle ducts and greater bending radii must be used. It is recommended to store the ducts in heated rooms until immediately prior to installation.

- The temperature-related length variation in ducts must be taken into account when cutting ducts in length. A HDPE duct expands or shrinks 0.2 mm per metre of length if the duct wall temperature rises or falls 1 Kelvin (1 K = 1 °C). The duct shrinks by 1 mm per metre of duct length when the temperature drops by –5 °C.

Unwinding from the drum- The duct bundles must be uncoiled from the drum in a controlled

manner to ensure they are installed in a straight line.- You must not roll the drum on the ground to uncoil a duct bundle. A

drum trailer or installation trolley should always be used. When uncoiling the microduct bundle, ensure that the bundle is pulled in a straight line and from beneath the drum. It is not permitted to pull the bundle from the side via the flange. The bundle must be under traction during the unwinding process from the first metre to prevent a spiral shape. At least two people should carry out uncoiling

and a drum brake should be used.- Once uncoiled, the duct bundle can be held in position in the trench

with piles of sand to ensure an optimum installation arrangement. - During warm weather, ensure that the duct bundles are not

stretched too much during unwinding and installation. - The duct lengths should be left in the trench for some time before

back-filling to prevent tension forces in the duct system, particularly in the summer months, so that the microduct bundles can contract to their original dimensions.

8.3 Installation methods

Installation in duct (direct install) DIThin-walled microducts with walls less than 1.5 mm thick cannot be laid directly in the ground and are therefore only suitable for installation in a duct. The same applies to duct bundles with thin-walled individual ducts. If there are existing ducts already installed can avoid the expense of excavation.

The diagram below shows possible numbers of RAUSPEED 10/8 microducts in HDPE ducts:

ø 50

7-fach 5-fach 3-fach

ø 40ø 32

Blowing in RAUSPEED of microductsMicroducts can be blown into HDPE ducts with interior grooving using conventional blowing-in devices and a compressor. The manufacturer's instructions are to be observed during the blowing-in process.

Compressed air needs to be applied into the microducts to increase rigidity shortly before the microducts are blown into the ducts. This prevents the microducts lying on top of each other and twisting when being blown into the ducts, which would reduce the blow-in length. Furthermore, the applied air pressure reduces microduct ovality. For this purpose, the microducts are subjected to an air pressure of about 10 bar on the inside of the microducts while the microducts are still on the drum. The ducts remain on the drum in this condition for one hour. The ends of the microducts are sealed with RAUSPEED end caps to ensure pressure can be applied.

A number of microducts can be blown into a duct at the same time. To do so, the drums for the microducts are placed on a suitable drum support frame. The optimum occupancy value for the duct is 40% to ensure high blow-in lengths are achieved (see separate datasheet on duct occupancy available on request). It is not recommended to blow in more microducts into a duct, which already contains ducts or cable.

Only individual microducts can be blown into ducts, not duct bundles. Duct bundles can be pulled into ducts.

Pulling in RAUSPEED microducts and duct bundles into existing ductsPulling in thick-walled microducts and duct bundles is especially suitable for existing ducts without interior grooving. Microducts and duct bundles can both be pulled in using a cable grip or individual pulling head.

- Ensure that you always seal the ends of the microducts.- Ensure that you do apply not too high tractive forces when pulling in the microducts (see Section 6.1 on page 11) for maximal pulling forces.

Experience has shown that the pull-in length is generally less than the blow-in length.

Example of cable pulling grip Example of pulling head (source: Vetter)

Installation in an open trenchAll thick walled microducts (wall thickness equal or more than 1,5 mm) can be installed as single microducts or as a duct bundle directly in the ground (direct bury DB) in sand bed to be used to ensure that coarser soil components cannot migrate to the microducts.

- You must not pull the microducts over sharp edges or kink them during installation.

- Always keep the microduct ends sealed during installation to ensure that no dirt or water get inside the microducts. Always use the transparent RAUSPEED end caps for installation and not the yellow transport caps to ensure a long-lasting, air- and watertight seal.

Professional duct bedding:

1. Levelling out the trench bed Microducts should be installed on a level, compacted, stone-free sand bed of at least 10 cm at an appropriate depth while taking account the structural requirements. If the subsoil is rocky or stony, the sand bed should be increased to 15 cm (sieved sand or compactable material with max. 2 mm grain size in the pipe zone – no crushed sand). If rippling in the trench base is not levelled out, this rippling is transferred to the duct bundle, which causes a reduction in the blowing-in length. Sudden steps in height are to be avoided. Light-weight compacting equipment is to be used for compaction.

2. Laying duct bundles Install the duct bundle into the trench under traction. You may need to secure it into position with piles of sand.

3. Lay sand covering At least 10 cm cover when compacted; in the same way as Step 1; compact by hand.

4. Back fill Back fill at least 30 cm with compactable, mixed and coarse-grained soil as per DIN 18196:2006-06 (stone-free,grain size< 63 mm). It is only permissible to use machinery for compacting from 30 cm back fill. Lay onwards warning tape at 20 cm above the uppermost layer of the duct system.

Road structure: overall cover of microducts as per KRV A 535: 0.5 m up

to 1 m (traffic-free surfaces up to truck loads of 60 tonnes).

Ploughing in duct bundles

Standard duct bundles are approved for ploughing into compactable, mixed- and coarse-grained soil as per

DIN 18196:2006-06 (stone-free, grain size < 63 mm). RAUSPEED Xtreme duct bundles should be used in soils with larger constituents or a sand bed must be added at the same time.

As a general rule, a cable-laying plough can be used to lay duct bundles in unpaved road surfaces.

The drum is placed on a cable-laying plough with a traction unit to plough in microducts. A plough blade ploughs a furrow in the unpaved surface while the duct is fed into the ground through a guide track on the plough. An integrated sand hopper or vibration plough compacts the surface immediately afterwards.

- Only use this method if the local conditions are known and there are no obstacles in the soil.

- Ensure that the duct bundle is always sealed during installation.

Installing duct bundles using the horizontal directional drilling method (HDD)

The thick-walled RAUSPEED Xtreme bundle must be used for directional drilling since powerful tractive forces

are applied.

A RAUSPEED Xtreme bundle can be attached to a cable pulling grip on the traction head to pull it in once horizontal directional drilling is complete. The achievable pull-in length depends on the bundle's maximum tensile strength, the soil conditions and how the drill hole is made. As a general rule, a drill hole reaches several hundred metres and is usually used to cross under water bodies, nature reserves or high traffic roads.

The horizontal directional drilling system drills an underground channel from the start pit to the pit. When the drillhead is pulled back one or several duct bundles are pulled in to the channel. Horizontal directional drilling systems use tractive, propulsive and rotating forces, flushing and dynamic impact force.

- Comply with the maximum permissible tractive forces.- Ensure that the duct bundle is always sealed during installation.

Trenching methodRAUSPEED duct bundles and microducts are generally suitable for micro, mini and macro-trenching. However, it must be noted that changes may arise in the surface structure on asphalted surfaces.

It is recommended to follow the German Research Institute for Roads and Transportation (FGSV) instruction sheet "Instructions on using the trenching method to lay fibre optical cables in asphalt road surfaces (H trenching)" to ensure maximum safety with regard to preserving structure and conditions on footpaths and roads. As of yet, there is no Standard for trenching methods such as those for conventional civil engineering.

Because the trenching process does not usually entail use of a sand bed, the use of the thick-walled

RAUSPEED Xtreme duct bundle is recommended.

Impact mole methodHouse connection microducts can be installed using the impact mole method (soil displacement) to avoid civil engineering works for the last few metres to the building.

A rocket-shaped lance contains a piston driven by compressed air. This piston continually strikes against the lance tip like a hammer, driving it forwards and displacing the soil as it advances. The microducts are pulled through the hole that the lance has created when the lance is pulled back.

A impact mole has an average range of about 15–30 m, which is why it is commonly used to connect microducts to homes. This method enables gardens and terraces to remain untouched and do not need to be restored.

8.4 Basic principles of installation

Bending radiiAs a basic rule, the greater the bending radii, the greater the achievable blow-in length.

Duct bundlesGeneral recommended minimum bend radius: > 2.5 m

MicroductsGeneral recommended minimum bend radius:

20 x Outer Diameter OD

Example 7 / 4 = minimum bend radius 20 x 7 = 140 mm

No connectors may be used in bends since the fibre optical cable may snag on the interior edge when it is

blown in.

DistancesThe horizontal distance to microduct bundles installed in parallel should be at least 3 cm to ensure sufficient sand filling.

Duct bundles can be installed in parallel in various sheathing colours or coloured RAUSPEED duct bundle marker can be applied at intervals of about 1 metre to ensure they are clearly assigned.

Connecting duct bundlesWhen connecting two duct bundles, the sheathing is stripped back and the microducts are connected with RAUSPEED connectors.

Connectors should always be installed offset to avoid damage.

To avoid incorrect assignment during the blow-in process, only microducts which have the same colour stripes/duct numbers should get connected.

The RAUSPEED connection tray can be used to protect the connection point against mechanical loads or dirt and provide strain relief and stability (data sheet available on request).

Cutting microducts and duct bundlesThe following basic principles apply to trimming:

- Do not use of any chip-producing tools such as saws to cut ducts as chips produced on the inner edge of ducts and crushed ducts could impair the blow-in process.

- You must ensure that the duct cutter blades are sharp, so that the microducts are not crushed.

- Trim perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of ducts.

When the tool is used correctly, the microduct will not need to be deburred or pressed back into shape.

When cutting bundles with larger microducts (16-20 mm) to size, the ducts can become oval-shaped at the cutting point. These need to be pressed round again prior to installation.

43

Page 44: RAUSPEED MICRODUCT SYSTEM · 6 RAUSPEED microduct system 11 6.1 RAUSPEED microducts and duct bundles 11 6.2 RAUSPEED Inhouse microducts 15 6.3 RAUSPEED accessories 17 6.4 RAUSPEED

8.5 House connection

The number of microducts in the bundle should correspond to the planned number of properties/buildings in the section (at least 1 duct for each building).

1. Open sheath Use a suitable RAUSPEED sheath opener. Press sliding block blade forwards into the sheathing and pull sheath opener along the groove between two microducts while applying slight pressure. Ensure that the microducts on the inside do not get damaged! Open approx. 60-120 cm depending on the duct bundle.

2. Cut house connection microducts The microducts are easily accessible in the opened bundle. Cut though the microduct to be branched off using a suitable RAUSPEED duct cutter. It can be identifed by its coloured stripes and duct number.

3. Installing connectors Mount RAUSPEED Connectors onto microduct branching off and connect to the prepared house connection microduct. The second end of the unassigned microduct which remains in the bundle must be sealed with a RAUSPEED end cap. Offset connector and end cap by trimming the microduct.

4. Install RAUSPEED Easy Fix Ensure that the connector is not placed in the bend area of the house connection duct. The RAUSPEED Easy Fix can be used to provide duct guidance in the branch. The plug connector must be posinioned before or after the branch support. The house microduct connection and duct bundle need to be fixed with cable ties to the branch support to ensure it is securely positioned. The branch support must to be fitted at a sufficient distance from the bundle to prevent pressure marks on the duct bundle. In the case of a double connection with optical fibre, a second branch is established with the other end of the cut microduct. This redundant installation minimises downtimes once in operation in the event of unexpected damage to the network.

4

4

5. Seal the house connection ducts pressure-tight.- In case no house connection is installed immediately, the house

connection microduct can be left at the property boundary or on the property plot and stored in a bundled coil containing adequate reserves of about 10 m length. The microduct must be sealed with a RAUSPEED End Cap and can be optionally protected against mechanical damage underground with the RAUSPEED excess length protection.

- Inside the building, the microduct must be sealed with a RAUSPEED End Cap or a RAUSPEED Divisible Gasblock (see Page 47).

44

Page 45: RAUSPEED MICRODUCT SYSTEM · 6 RAUSPEED microduct system 11 6.1 RAUSPEED microducts and duct bundles 11 6.2 RAUSPEED Inhouse microducts 15 6.3 RAUSPEED accessories 17 6.4 RAUSPEED

Undo RAUSPEED ConnectorsA high-tensile connection is created by the clamping

teeth located inside the connectors.

It is not possible to undo the connection accidentally (e.g. such as pressure caused by sanding) due to the pre-fitted magenta safety clip.

- Undo the safety clip by hand or pull it out at the corresponding notch with a screwdriver to unfasten the connection.

- Then press down the green release ring, so that the teeth are pulled back.

Wall entriesRAUSPEED wall entries are used to feed microducts into the building ensuring the connection is secure and leak-tight. Inside the building (normally in the subscriber's basement), the house connection microducts are installed with a grid elbow at the end of the wall entry.

The version with foam tube can be used for the subsequent foaming process in the drill hole in the event of adverse masonry conditions.

The RAUSPEED trenchless wall entry can be used for house connections using displacement hammers.

Follow the supplied instructions to install the wall entries.

8.6 Blowing in fibre optical cables

Fibre optical cables can be blown into RAUSPEED microducts with conventional blowing-in devices. The manufacturer's instructions are to be observed when doing this.

The microducts feature interior RTR grooving to improve the blow-in behaviour. The graphic below shows the difference between a non-grooved smooth duct and a duct with interior grooving during the blow-in process. Whereas turbulent currents can reduce the blowing-in length in a non-grooved duct, the interior grooving generates a laminar air flow that holds the cable in the air securely. The special and flattened REHAU interior grooving (RTR technology) also prevents cable friction and achieves optimal blow-in results.

* Fibre count is dependent on fibre optic cable design, fibre diameter and manufacture.

The cable diameters recommended in the table are based on the achievement of long blowing in length.

The achievable blow-in length depends on several factors and project-specific conditions.

- With smaller annular clearances, only reduced blow-in lengths can be achieved. The exact values of cable diameters and fibre count depend on the relevant cable manufacturer.

- The cables must be free of side impact to avoid knocks to the interior duct wall during the blow-in process. The friction created by this would severely impair the blowing in performance.

Sealing between microducts and fibre optical cablesThe RAUSPEED Gasblock is used to seal between the microduct and the fibre optical cable. A seal is normally applied both at the optical fibre distribution point (KVz/MFG) at the beginning of the route and at the end of the route in the building. The sealing in the building is essential to prevent water and creeping gases from penetrating.

The sealing can be achieved using a Gasblock or Divisible Gasblock. The Divisible Gasblock consisting of three parts has the advantage that it can also be used when a fibre optic cable has already been blown-in to the microduct. To do this, the internal rubber seal is pulled apart and applied over the end of the microduct and wrapped around the fibre optic cable. Then the housing is closed around the seal and securely fixed with the green clamping rail to achieve gas- and watertight seal.

Follow the supplied instructions to install the RAUSPEED Divisible Gasblock.

At the optical fibre distribution point, the Divisible Gasblock can be fitted to identify with the supplied label tag of the house connection. Alternatively, RAUSPEED identification plates can be positioned on the microducts.

Subsequent connection of microductsThe Divisible Connector allows microducts already fitted with fibre optic cables to be connected at a later stage (e.g. for repairs).

Sometimes, cables are not blown in at the start of a route; they are blown in from the centre of the section to achieve long blow-in routes without splicing. Divisible Connectors can also be used here to subsequently connect the microducts. The Divisible Connector is not suitable for blowing in itself.

Gasblock variantIn addition to the RAUSPEED Divisible Gasblock, the Divisible Connector can also be used with a Gasblock to provide a gas- and watertight seal. It can be distinguished from the version without Gasblock when closed. Using the Divisible Connector instead of the Divisible Gasblock provides the seal in front of the wall terminal.
