Neighborhood Associations have been invited to participate in the March 24th Festival of States
Evening Parade. Our float won 1st Prize last year and we will be entering a float again this year. Details are still being worked out at this time. If you would like to participate, please call Dave or Donna Hoover at 727-579-3644 and leave us a message. We are looking for riders and walkers. We threw over 2,100 beads last year and they are the major expense for this event, so we want to thank those people who have dropped off beads at our door since last year’s parade. We really want to thank Toni Michalove for her very generous contribution of a lot of the beads we will throw that night. If anybody has any beads they would like to donate (think recycling), you can bring the beads to the next meeting or drop them off at the Hoover’s house at 163 87th Ave N.

It’s that time of year again where we all come together to clean our neighborhood. We once again received a grant from the South West Florida Water Management District (formally known as “SWFWMD,” currently as “The District”) to help enhance our efforts for the cleanup on April 9th. This is an educational grant to help teach our residents how to conserve and preserve the quality of our most precious asset, the water in our canals and the areas surrounding our canals. This is a 3 part grant: 1. A Pre-Cleanup Meeting at our March 31st General Meeting with speakers, literature and surprise give-a-ways. If you know an area of concern, please use this opportunity to bring it to our attention. Come take our pre-clean-up questionnaire and pledge to help protect our waterways.
2. Our annual canal and street clean-up will be held on April 9th. (details below)
3. A Post-Clean-up Meeting at our May 26th General Meeting with speakers, literature and more surprise give-a-ways. Come take our post clean-up questionnaire and pledge to help continue to protect our waterways. The speakers will be from “The District”, “Keep Pinellas Beautiful”, and the “Sierra Club”. The literature covers every aspect of Water Conservation, Water Quality, Recycling, Fertilizing, Red Tide, etc.
On April 9th at 8:15 AM, we need as many volunteers as possible to meet us at the boat ramp located at 234 Sunlit Cove Drive to pick or be assigned a clean-up. Free
COFFEE and DONUTS will be supplied to get the day off to a great start and LUNCH will be provided at the end of the event around 12 noon. Last year we had 75 people
volunteer and helped remove over 2.35 tons of trash and debris from our canals and surrounding land areas, which we also separated the recyclable material and disposed of correctly. We are calling all Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Brownie and Girl Scout troops, Church Groups, Schools, etc. everyone is asked to come join us on this clean-up effort. This is also a great opportunity to get those high school community service hours! If you or your company would like to donate food or

We will have 2 large dumpsters, a Port-O-Let/Spot-A-Pot, and fresh water for hand washing at the boat ramp and we will supply all the bags, gloves, pickers, etc, and all that is needed for a very productive day.
We have to submit before and after cleanup area pictures and pictures of the volunteers working to “The District” as a requirement for the grant, but we can’t be everywhere, so please feel free to take any pertinent pictures yourselves to submit to us. Some of them will definitely end up in our newsletter!!
You don’t need a powerboat, canoe, kayak, paddleboat, or even an inner tube to help, just bring along a desire to help the neighborhood become a better and cleaner place
for everybody to live. If you can’t be involved in the clean-up, but want to do something to help, maybe bring by some homemade goodies for our volunteers throughout the day. Every little bit helps.

St. Petersburg for all to enjoy. By doing our part to minimize our impact, they will remain healthy and productive. Help Keep Our Bays and Waters Clean! • Never dump anything down the storm drains• Sweep up driveways, sidewalks and roads to avoid material washing into the canals.• Don’t blow leaves into the street or storm drains• Wash your car on the lawn instead of roads and driveways.• Check your car for leaks and dispose of waste oil properly.• Pick up after your pets and dispose in trash cans.• Use fertilizers and pesticides sparingly.• Do not throw cigarette butts on the ground.
Unfortunately, litter in our waterways and on our beaches lasts a long time, often years. Litter, especially plastics, takes many decades to several hundred years to break down, thereby threatening wildlife and public health for generations. Consider how long it takes for these items commonly found
in our waterways to breakdown: • Cardboard box, 2 weeks• Orange peel, 2-5 weeks• Banana Peel, 2-5 weeks• Newspaper, 6 weeks• Apple core, 2 months• Wool sock, 1-5 years• Cigarette filter, 1-5 years• Plastic bag, 10-20 years
As you can see, the natural items take a shorter time to decompose, and the manmade items (often the more pervasive and abundant) take much longer.
Easter Egg Hunt/ Ice Cream Social - April 14th

Doors open 6:15 pm, hunt begins at 6:30 sharp. The Easter Bunny will be hiding plenty of
goody filled eggs inside the hall for us again this year and all you need to bring to join the hunt is your own Easter basket or something to collect your eggs in. The number of eggs you get to collect will depend on the number of kids that will be hunting, AND, you get to keep the cool Bunny ears we give you.
The Hunt will be followed again this year by our Ice Cream social with Chocolate and Vanilla Hagen Dazs ice cream generously donated by RBCA residents Christine & Mark Prendagast and coffee (hopefully donated) or bought from Dunkin Donuts (and possibly a chocolaty surprise donated from The Melting Pot.)
The RBCA will provide all the fix’ins so all ya gotta bring to this event is a sweet tooth, however, your family must be current RBCA members to participate, so if you aren’t already a member, you can either mail your info along with $10 per family to 9890 2nd Street N, St Pete, FL 33702, before that night or pay the night of the event. This event is a lot of fun and not just for kids, so please feel free to come on out and join us for dessert along with all the “organized” chaos.
Community ServiceHours
Our canal cleanup is the perfect opportunity for a lot of kids to
work a long side their family and friends to get those Community Service hours needed to graduate while actually seeing the positive difference they make in their community. We are also looking for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Girl Scout Troops that may want to participate for badges. Please call me at 579-3644 if you have a child that needs to complete some community service hours at other times of the year, we can always come up with ideas for help. Whether it’s walking the streets picking up trash in the neighborhood, helping to deliver newsletters or flyers, helping stuff Easter eggs, helping at a neighborhood event, researching the history of the neighborhood, or even providing help for one of our Christmas candle distributors, we’ll find something for them to do to earn those hours.

Another successful Neighborhood Yard Sale has come and gone. Again, we got a few calls wanting to know why
some roads didn’t have the big sign’s marking their road. If no one calls to be on the map for your street, we won’t be putting a sign up to direct people down a street with no yard sales, so please remember to call to be put on the maps.

St Pete Code ViolationsYard Parking & Trash Container Times
These are two of the code violations that the city is going to really start cracking down on.
Please help the neighborhood not look “trashy” by only parking your vehicle in your driveway or on the road (not in your yard) and only putting your trash can out at the curb after 7pm the day before trash pickup and placing it beside or behind your house no later than 7pm on the day of collection.
Sec. 27-283. - Time of container placement. (a) Prohibited hours. Approved bulk garbage containers placed near the curb or alley shall be placed there no earlier than 7:00 p.m. of the evening preceding the collection day and must be removed to a point at the side or rear of the structure not later than the later of 7:00 p.m. of the day of collection or when the container has been emptied.__________________________________________________

83RD AVENUEADOPT A MILE PROGRAM
We had our third 83rd Ave N Clean-up on February 26th.
With only 7 people we managed to pickup 3 bags of trash and recycled the glass & aluminum cans. We want to Thank Cyndy, Justin & Austin Glynn, Ingrid Busselle, Nancy Kehler along with Dave & Donna Hoover for taking the time out of their busy schedule to help clean up the 83rd Avenue corridor. Hopefully we will get some additional volunteers show up at our fourth clean up on April 9th along with our canal clean-up._______________________________

believe we don’t have more residents participating in the voluntary Curbside Recycling program. It only costs $2.75 a month, payable annually. (If you really can’t afford that amount, but would still like to participate, please contact me and I’ll see if we can arrange a neighborhood grant or something.) Throwing Out Is Out! -
St. Petersburg residents can place newspapers, cardboard, metal and aluminum cans, glass and plastic at the curb for weekly recycling. The curbside recycling program, provided by the city through a contract with Waste Services of Florida, Inc., is voluntary. WSI will provide residents with all labor, equipment, containers and administration. Contact WSI at 727-572-6800.
St. Petersburg was designated as the first city in the state to become a “Green City” by the Florida Green Building Coalition!
Florida generates over 29 million tons of solid waste per year. If you’re the typical Florida resident, you throw away 10 pounds of trash a day. Now, you can recycle some of that trash, and help mother earth.
Don’t just throw your old batteries in the trash to end up in our landfills. We will have a collection bucket at each RBCA General Meeting to collect old batteries for recycling.

Unsold software is disassembled and separated into paper, plastic and disks. The disks, with are effectively brand new, are erased, formatted, tested, labeled, and reused. GreenDisk of Redmond Washington sells reclaimed disks as GreenDisk Recycled Diskettes. For more information, link to GreenDisk, Inc. To clear all old data and even viruses from a floppy you just need to do a “full” or “unconditional” disk format.
Collected eyeglasses are matched to people with need. Many of the glasses are sent to other countries, as laws in the USA make it difficult to re-dispense a prescription product. Another option is to have your old glasses tinted to turn them into sunglasses. The Lions Clubs collect glasses from opticians. LensCrafters, For-Eyes and Pearle collect glasses chain-wide. Several organizations accept eyewear by mail: New Eyes for the Needy, 549 Millburn, PO Box 332, Short Hills, NY 07078.

Many packing, shipping and moving stores will take used peanuts. Just pack them up in plastic bags, and drop them off. Mail Boxes Etc. and The Postal Annex take them. For a list of local collection sites, try the Plastic Loosefill Council at 1-800-828-2214 (24 Hours).
Damaged CD’s can be repaired. Repair small numbers of scratches with a mild abrasive such as toothpaste. If you just don’t like the CD’s, give or trade them at a music store or donate them to charity. Obsolete or unrepairable CD’s and cases can be recycled. The most common type of smoke detector contains a small amount of Americium 241, a radioactive material. Detector companies accept returned radioactive detectors for disposal as hazardous waste. Detectors have a limited life span, usually specified at ten years. Most smoke detectors are made by First Alert Corp. Send old detectors to First Alert, Radioactive Waste Disposal, 780 McClure Rd, Aurora, IL 60504-2495, 1-800-323-9005. Send detectors by surface mail or UPS Ground so they don’t end up in an airplane.
Despite claims on the boxes, less than
half of disposable cameras are ever actually recycled. Not all parts of the cameras are recyclable. Inexpensive fully-automatic 35mm cameras can be purchased for about $20. These cameras will give better results and cost less to use than the disposables.
Unfortunately batteries contain metals, acids and other compounds that can be bad when released into the environment.
