53rd YEAR • JULY / AUGUST, 2013 ISSUE www.rbcanews.com

Wow! Take a summer break and all hel..ck breaks loose in the

neighborhood. First a 9’6” gator that was hanging around getting too close

for comfort was removed from the south side of Sunlit Cove. (Article inside)

Next, a tornado made the national news by causing quite a bit of havoc in Riviera Bay. A house on 87th Ave N lost a large screen room and their 14 X 12 ft dock weighing 1,000 lbs was torn from the pilings in one piece and thrown against the kitchen window next door.

Several roofs and boats were damaged. A large wooden playhouse was tossed upside down across a fence and a trampoline was picked

up from 89th Ave N and tossed across the canal landing on the south side of 87th Ave N.

We lost a table & a chair with great sentimental value and one of our trees fell on our neighbor’s trampoline. (please see Lost & Found article in this issue.) Several

of our residents have posted funnel cloud/tornado videos on YouTube (glad nobody caught me running

around yelling, “Auntie Em, Auntie Em, where’s Toto) and I don’t know how long it will stay posted, but the CNN link is: edition.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/us/2013/06/25/dnt-fl-waterspout-tornado.wtsp.html

We are all very fortunate that there weren’t any injuries, this time, but this should serve as a really good wake-up call that we all need to be ready for WHEN this happens again. (See article inside.) Don’t wait till you’re face to face with the Wizard of Oz to do your research and get prepared for the worst.

Now that I’ve scared everybody, hope to see you all on Aug 15th, not just for great Paisano’s Pizza & Dessert, but also to grill...I mean talk with our District 2 candidates about the Pier, our new park and maybe the new bridge and a neighborhood car show.

Thanks for your support, and Donna & I hope everybody has a great summer, Prez Dave

Council Member Kennedy’s CornerThank you for the privilege to contribute to your newslet-ter. In this issue, I have the following updates:

83rd Avenue/San Martin BridgeThe City met with County staff in early May to discuss

the preliminary plans development for the replacement of the bridge over Riviera Bay and the trail connections that are a part of our CityTrails program to the north and south of the bridge. The County has hired a consultant to review the opportunities for the bridge’s replacement while also considering how the trail connections can be made. The consultant is working to develop conceptual plans that will include a wider profile for the bridge that maintains the same number of vehicle lanes, though adds a trail facil-ity on one side and a sidewalk on the other. We expect to receive the consultant’s preliminary findings in August. We will then need a few weeks to review and tweak those plans with the County and then we will conduct a public meeting or workshop to bring this exciting project to the community. The County has programmed funding for the bridge design in FY13/14 with construction likely to be funded in FY17 depending on the cost estimates that are developed during this planning process.

Canoe LaunchThe City of St. Petersburg will soon construct acces-

sibility improvements to the Blue Ways canoe/kayak launch at 80th Avenue N.E. and Riverside Drive as part of the City’s Blue Ways program. This area has previously been identified as a trail and this amenity will now allow individu-als with physical limitations to access the waterway. The launch site will allow for four (4) parking spaces including one accessible space, and a ramp that will allow access over the existing concrete retaining wall.

Construction is slated to begin later this year. The work-ers will do their best to work in a manner that minimizes impacts to your property and schedule. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Cher-yl Stacks at 892-5328 or [email protected].

If l can be of assistance, please feel free to call me at 727-893-7117.

New StormwaterVaults Status

There are currently 9 Stormwater retention vaults to be installed in the neighborhood. (see map)

From City on April 3, 2013: The bidding is expected to take place by June 2013, with construction to com-mence in September 2013. Completion of the Work is expected in December, 2014. The purpose of the Proj-ect is to reduce routine tidal flooding along low-lying streets, and provide water quality improvement benefits to Tampa Bay. Each reinforced concrete vault contains a sediment sump, trash screen, and backflow preven-

tion check valve. The backflow prevention check valve allows the drainage pipe to flow only in the direction of the Bay. The locations of the proposed vaults are indi-cated on the attached map.

The installation process will take approximately one month at each location.

Restoration of roadways, driveways, and sodded ar-eas will be performed as part of the vault installation activities. The contractor will be required to maintain access to residences and businesses in the construction area.

Stop Canal Pollution

DON’T THROW ANYTHING IN THE WATER AND TRY

TO KEEP AS MUCH GRASS & LANDSCAPE CUTTINGS OUT OF THE WATER! Trash in the water is not only unsightly; it can injure or kill marine life and/or damage wa-tercraft. If that isn’t enough to stop you, most of what is being thrown in such as grass and tree cuttings, fruit & pet waste removes oxygen from

the water as it degrades and whatever is left sinks to the bottom, adding to the silt that has to be removed to

keep our canals navigable. It always amazes me when I see somebody throwing anything in the canal and then complains to me that our ca-nals are too shallow! Whenever you go outside follow the rule: whatever you take out, bring back!

Here are some tips for preventing pollution:• Pet waste, just like human waste, contributes harm-

ful bacteria that can make people & pets sick and ruin our precious waters. The rain will also wash it into the waterways if it doesn’t get picked up. Always carry a baggie or newspaper and pick up after your pet and dis-pose of it in your trash can.

• Proper landscape practices are important for pro-tecting waterways. You or your lawn service should blow any cut grass out of the street and off your seawall back onto your lawn. Visit www.pinellascounty.org/fer-tilizer for more information.

• Be Floridian! Visit www.BeFloridian.org to learn how to truly Be Floridian by protecting the natural re-sources that make Floridian life awesome!

New San Martin Bridge Status

From the County:I just spoke with Paul Bellhorn and Tony Horrnik

and confirmed that the scope and fee proposal (that will include schedule) is being worked on by the consultant HDR and is anticipated to be completed by the end of August for review. At that time, we will have a schedule to share regarding proposed completion of preliminary/conceptual phase (which will provide conceptual draw-ings).

Also from the county:The proposed CIP plan shows the Project Develop-

ment & Environment (PD&E) Study taking place in FY14 & FY15, with design process in FY16 & FY17, and construction phase in FY18 & FY19. However, the construction phase timing is anticipating that the com-pleted PD&E study will result in the county being able to obtain 50% grant funding for the construction phase from federal and/or state sources. If 50% grant fund-ing is not approved/obtained, then timing of construc-tion will be impacted. The PD&E process will include a public information meeting where residents will be able to provide their input. If citizens wish to speak with the county project manager, they can contact Tony Horrnik, P.E., at 727-464-3640.

This gator had been hanging out in our water for a couple of weeks. He was been getting too close

for comfort. So, we called the trapper after deciding it wasn’t safe for us, our dogs & the boys that were on their paddle boards, playing in the water right where the gator was hanging out a few hours before. ( I called to them & warned them — they got out really fast, be-fore I could say another word.)

So, the trappers from Fish & Wildlife came out and played a CD of gator sounds and cast out a line to catch him. Finally, after dark, he was hooked. We called the trapper to come back and get him. It was a long process, an all day event. They left here at midnight. Oh, they measured him to be 9.6 feet long!

SPOTLIGHT ON....

by Prez Dave

We’re starting this column to help promote the people that have busi-nesses within the neighborhood. Each issue we will highlight one

neighborhood business and invite them to speak about their company for a couple minutes at our next general meeting. Some already pay to adver-tise in our newsletter and some we barter with donating their services or product(s) as door prizes.

This issue we highlight Mama’s Whoopie Pies, owned by Danielle Ross & James Barber from 2nd St N. (Donna & I have tasted several flavors of these hamburger-sized pies and they were all delicious.) They will be pro-viding samples at our Aug 15th meeting. They have 15+ flavors printed on their flyer, more on their website, www.mamaswhoopiepies.com, and will also do custom flavor orders. Like them on Facebook, and you can also email Danielle & James at [email protected] or call (727) 278-3534.

Facts from Bottom Line/HEALTH

You’ve heard that green tea and red wine are powerful

cancer fighters. But, there’s something that is more pow-erful than both of them com-bined. One glass of wine and 1 cup of green tea has 715mg of antioxidants, but 1 cup of hot cocoa has 1,175mg of antioxidants. When you switch

to cocoa, you get the chocolate taste and less than 1 gram of saturated fat.

• Think you’re having a heart attack? After calling 911 chew a 325mg aspirin tablet and swallow im-mediately. To help prevent future heart attaches and cardiovascular problems, you should know about the all natural nutrient called Nattokinase, made from fer-mented soy beans. It can dissolve clot causing fibrin and break down existing blood clots.

• Next time you have a cut that requires stitches ask the doctor to “Super Glue” it instead. Research shows doctors closed lacerations faster with less pain than with sutures. Glued cuts healed just as well as the cuts closed with sutures and it didn’t leave any track marks on the skin. Also, another benefit, most sutures need to be removed after several days. The glue requires no follow up care.

Please Send Emails To County Commissioners About Raising, Lengthening, & Widening The San Martin Bridge

The single most important thing you can do right now to increase your future property values in this

entire area is to send emails ASAP urging the County Commissioners to replace the existing “Functionally Deficient in need of replacement” San Martin Bridge with one that is taller, wider, longer and safer. (email addresses are provided below.)
