“It’s another great day in Riviera Bay!”

I’m tellin’ ya, we should really be called the SBRBCA for

“SUPEREST BESTEST Riviera Bay Civic Association.” You should be very proud of your neighborhood association, ‘cause we TOTALLY ROCKED St Pete in March and April.

First, at the Festival of States night parade, everybody had a blast tossing out over 3 gazillion beads and we won First Prize for having the best float in the parade (for the 2nd year in a row btw, tyvm),

We gave away lots of door prizes and had great speakers at our general meeting.

City Council set aside money for an excit-ing, fantastic new park to go in on the Rio Vista school property.

At 3pm, our District 2 Council Chair Jim Kennedy will publicly recognize the Riviera Bay Civic Association

for turning 50 years old and for many other accomplishments. If you can attend this televised ceremony to show pride in your community, please do. The more the merrier. Talk With City Officials

Got a question, problem, or need help getting something accomplished with any City Dept or the Police Dept.?

Here are two more upcoming opportunities to talk with the Mayor, City Council, Codes, Storm Water dept, Police, Engineering, etc. If you have any concerns or need assistance in any way in St Petersburg and you don’t use one of these opportunities to find a solution, you really can’t say they didn’t try to listen to you or try to help. Even though 3 boats, a Corvette, and a dance troupe fell through for us at the last minute, we still managed to

borrow a deck boat and trailer from Les Buchanan at 9:30 pm the night before the parade, decorated it and rented a Honda generator from Quality Mowers the afternoon of the parade, and then found a driver to pull it with his truck only hours before the parade, our float still won 1st Prize ($300) this year.

With Cyndy, Justin & Austin Glynn proudly carrying our banner out front, it was TOTALLY AWESOME the way we ROCKED St Pete with all our lights and music, and I would bet anybody that we threw well over 3,000 beads during the entire parade. By the way, at no cost to the RBCA this year thanks to a very, very generous donation of most of those beads by Toni  Michalove from Legends Plumbing, as well as a box of beads donated by Kim Triplett from Cameron Termite & Pest Control, and Jennifer Miller (DJ Delish) donated the fantastic music – Thanks Guys!)

Another N/A president that was sitting next to the judges said the announcers were still talking about Riviera Bay’s Party float even after 2 other floats had gone by after us.

We Need Volunteers For Sat, May 21Festival Of States Day Parade Float

We haven’t figured out what we’re going to do for the parade yet, but please contact Prez Dave asap with any ideas or if you want to help us with the float, or if you want to drive your nice vehicle, or if you just want to walk or dance along in the parade. I’m hoping to also have music and throw beads again on another “tropical themed” float/boat/flatbed, but any new ideas or help planning would be welcomed.

It’s so much more exciting and way more “bester” to be the thrower than the catcher of the beads.

Thanks to all who helped us win that night: Les Buchanan, Toni Michalove, Chandler Harper, Jennifer & Lacy Miller, Kevin Burke, Stacey Gollinger, Kim Tripplet, Joe Cox, Cyndy, Justin, & Austin Glynn, Legends Plumbing, Cameron Pest Control, Quality Mowers, and Prez Party people Dave ‘n Donna Hoover.

If anybody has any beads they would like to donate and recycle for future events, please bring them to any RBCA event/meeting or drop them off anytime on the front porch at the Hoover’s house at 163 87th Ave N.

As you can tell from the pictures, every child and adult that participated had a great time searching for eggs

and eating all the goodies we had. Once again we were fortunate to have some really great people step up to help with this event. Thanks once again to Christine Prendergast for donating all that fantastic Haagen Dazs Ice cream and to Chris Wilson from the Melting Pot for donating all those wonderfully delicious chocolate covered strawberries. Thanks also this year to Lori Intravichit for donating all the candies and the labor to put together 196 plastic eggs all by herself, and to Jenny Healy for helping to hide all those eggs, and to Kathy, Zack & Josh Crow for helping to dish out all the goodies. Maybe next year we can hold this event outside in our new Rio Vista Park??

, District 2

Council Member Kennedy’s CornerThank you for allowing me the opportunity to

contribute to your monthly newsletter. It is my civic duty to keep you informed on new and existing developments in District 2 and throughout the city. In this month’s issue, I would like to update you regarding the following:

It is my pleasure to inform you that the members of City Council approved the proposal to develop a park at the former Rio Vista Elementary School, located at 8131 Macoma Drive Northeast. During the April 21, 2011 City Council Meeting, Council Members voted to designate $1.6 million from the Weeki Wachee Fund for the purchase, development and maintenance of Rio Vista Park. The idea of taking advantage of this prime property will only enhance the quality of life for area residents. In addition, the two remaining buildings on site will afford the community an opportunity to address before and after school child care needs. Your support of this initiative made the difference. Thank you!

The Fiscal Year 2012 Budget is underway and tough

decisions will be made in this difficult economic climate. Your participation at a Budget Summit will ensure a better understanding of the budget process with an opportunity to convey your ideas, interest and concerns. The schedule is as follows:

Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Azalea Recreation Center, 1600 - 72nd St. No.- 6:OO pmWednesday, June 22, 2011 at Lake Vista Recreation Center, 1401 - 62nd Ave S. - 6:OO pm

It is indeed an honor to serve as your Council representative. If I can be of assistance, please feel free to call my office at (727) 893-7117.

pickers, water, gloves and trash bags and everybody did a great job filling 2 industrial dumpsters with a total of 5,751.4 lbs of trash & debris. Si Intravichit and I then separated and recycled 126.6 lbs of plastic, 154.8 lbs of glass, & 910 lbs of metal, keeping 1,191.4 lbs of recyclables out of the landfill and sent the remaining 2.28 tons of trash to be burned for energy at the incinerator. WSI loaned me 20 recycle bins and then picked up all that glass & plastic at my house on my regular curbside pickup day, and I made 3 trips to Big 3 Metal Recyclers to recycle all the metal.

After the cleanup, everybody really enjoyed the subs donated by Subway and the pizza donated by Anytime Pizza. I’m sorry I don’t have

all the info to thank everybody by name here, but we truly couldn’t have done such a good job without all the help from the Phipps, the Crows, the Intravichts, the Kandzs, the Smiths, the Wysongs, the Lamberts, the Amsallems, the Busselles,  the Kehlers, the Hoovers, and the never-stopping help from Luke Davidson, grandson of Jean Gibson. I know I’m missing people that helped that day, but please know that THE ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD DOES SAY THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR MAKING IT A BETTER PLACE FOR EVERYBODY TO LIVE.

2011 Healthy Water Canal Cleanup

Follow Up

Thanks in part to another educational grant from “The

District” this year, a smaller group than usual (but still over 40) of our residents came together again by foot, bike, roller blade, little red wagon, Hoveround, skateboard, kayak, canoe, boat, golf cart, motorcycle, car and truck to cleanup and preserve the

quality of our most precious asset, our waterways and the land areas surrounding our canals.

Many kids used this event to work alongside their friends to get their community service hours. As you can see from the pictures, everybody had a lot of fun and still managed to collect and remove almost 3 tons of trash and debris that day. We all got off to a great start thanks to McDonalds donating Breakfast Biscuits and Orange drink and Starbucks donating Coffee and their new Petite desserts. Keep Pinellas Beautiful supplied

Post Canal CleanupGeneral Meeting

Thurs, May 26th

Every resident should attend this meeting. From the great donated pizza from Anytime Pizza at 6:30 pm, we

will also have plenty of giveaways (maybe even a rain barrel) and a lot of info to share about future improvements in the neighborhood, such as the new Rio Vista park (or the new Prez Dave Park, lol) new RBCA storm drain markers, renewed Crime Watch, and new area cleanups.

We will also have speakers from “The District”, “Keep Pinellas Beautiful”, and from St Pete’s Water Conservation dept. As always, we will collect any used batteries and recycle everything we can to keep it out of the landfill.

Page 8: RBCA News May/June, 2011

Crime Watch

Pat Petro has volunteered to be our

Crime Watch Coordinator and we are very close to launching our new website that will allow everyone to access the local area crime reports easier. We have a few volunteers, but do not have all areas covered. If you walk in the neighborhood for exercise or have any free time at your computer, please get involved with our Crime Watch group. Come out to our May 26th RBCA General Meeting or contact Donna Hoover 727-579-3644 or [email protected]. More to come in the next newsletter._______________________________

RBCA Break-In/Robbery Scam

A neighbor in the Cul-de-sac on Oak Street was the victim of a

robbery scam recently. At around 5:30pm she heard a knock at the door but ignored it. She saw, through a

window, a heavy-set man return to a light colored mini-van in her driveway. Instead of leaving, he came back to the door and knocked again, much harder, and more insistent. The homeowner answered the door and the man stated he was from H&H Seawall Repair and had been hired by the city to repair cracks in seawalls in the neighborhood. He insisted that she accompany him to the back yard to view the seawall, which she reluctantly did.  Feeling uneasy, and suspecting that the man was not on the level, she returned to the front door, and the man got back into the mini-van. Upon looking around the house, she noticed that many of her things were ransacked and many valuable items missing. She notified police and they arrived to take a report and have the forensics tech check the place for evidence.

Witnesses say the van was a late model Dodge mini-van, cream or silver color. The scammer at the door was about 5’9” tall, white male, heavy

set, clean facial hair, and the hair was a short buzz cut. He had a tattoo on his forearm about 3 or 4 inches in diameter.

Everyone please be alert to anyone that seems suspicious to you, and anything unusual in your neighborhood.______________________________

The RBCA is looking for a Carefest project in the community to

partner with assistance from the city of St Pete. If you know of an area concern or a neighbor who needs help in some way, maybe in their yard or cleaning or painting, please bring it to our attention. Call Donna Hoover at 727-579-3644 or e-mail [email protected]  Keep an eye on the newsletter for more info as this date gets closer. We will also be looking for volunteers to help with these  projects.

Community Service Hours Opportunity

Our canal cleanup was the perfect opportunity for a lot of kids to

work alongside their family and friends to get those Community Service hours needed to graduate while actually seeing the positive difference they make in their community. We can always come up with ideas if you have a child

that needs to complete some community service hours at other times of the year. Whether it’s walking the streets picking up trash in the neighborhood, helping to deliver newsletters or flyers, helping at a neighborhood event, researching the history of the neighborhood, or even

providing help for one of our Christmas candle distributors, we’ll find something for them to do to earn those hours. Call Donna Hoover at 727-579-3644 or e-mail

Sunday May 15 –  www.FLROADRACES.com

These events are being established by Lorraine Yaslowitz in memory of

Jeff, Tom, and Dave. Lorraine and Jeff often ran

together and competed at local races. That, combined with Lorraine’s desire to memorialize Jeff in a positive way, to thank the Tampa Bay

community for their support during this tragedy,

and to thank police officers everywhere, motivated Lorraine to establish the Partners for Life Foundation.

ALL proceeds from the race will be distributed by Lorraine and her

Partners for Life Foundation to area non-profits in Jeff’s name.

Of all the fundraisers/memorials that have taken place, this is the first that Lorraine is creating on her own to remember her husband Jeff and his partners, Tom and Dave.

All courses are in downtown St. Petersburg and will feature the downtown waterfront and other unique aspects of St. Petersburg. They are mostly flat and aesthetically varied. Courses are being finalized, so please be patient.
