LIMITED WARRANTY FOR THE LIFE OF THE MERCHANDISETiming belts are a critical part of any engine maintenance program and must be replaced at the specified interval determined by the belt manufacturer or original equipment vehicle manufacturer . Failure to do so may result in catastrophic engine damage . Replacement with a premium quality belt that meets or exceeds original equipment specifications is your best assurance of continued trouble-free performance . Gates Corporation is the worlds leading designer and manufacturer of timing belts . Gates belts not only meet OE specifications, they are an exact OE replacement on many vehicles .

All Gates timing belts are manufactured under tight quality controls . In the event of failure due to defects in materials or workmanship, however, Gates will replace timing belts that are proven to be defective if failure occurred within the timing belt replacement interval recommendation specified by Gates or the original equipment vehicle manufacturer . (See www .gates .com/tb for required replacement intervals .) Gates will also, at its option, repair or replace vehicle engine components damaged due to proven defects in timing belt materials or workmanship, if the damage occurred within the specified belt replacement interval . Timing System OperationThe crankshaft drives the camshaft(s) and actuates the valves via a belt or a chain. The timing belt is widely used by car manufacturers because of its advantages over a chain, namely reduced space, as well as lighter and quieter running.

Important:In order to achieve safe and thorough servicing of the engine, we recommend the belt, belt tensioner pulley, and idler pulleys of the timing system or the auxiliary drive, all be changed at the same time. It is highly probable that the source of damage to the belt (too much or too little tension, vibration, high temperature, belt misalignment, etc.) will also have affected the other rotating components of the system including the belt tensioner and idler pulley. If they are not changed together with the belt, early breakdown may be encountered, resulting in serious damage to the engine. It is highly recommended that belt tension be measured using a timing belt tension tester (#91000).

Engine timing systems utilize one or more of following four types of components:

Pulleys Fixed and/or TensionerPulleys can be either a fixed idler or a replacement for a tensioner bracket. They can be constructed of metallic or plastic material and there are two basic surfaces smooth and notched (also called a sprocket):

Manual TensionerManual tensioners use a tension spring to apply the initial tension. Hook one end of the spring to the tensioner and the other end to the engine and tighten the tensioner bolts to the proper torque. (See Service Manual for torque specifications.) It is recommended that the belt tension be checked with the proper tool once the tensioners are installed. See page A10 for details.Tension springs not included.

Hydraulic Damper Pivot ArmSeveral engine manufacturers use a pivot arm in correlation with a hydraulic damper to tension the belt. This damper uses a piston that pushes a pivot arm with apulley,providingtherequiredtension.Whenre-usingthehydraulicdamperthepiston will need to be driven back into its cylinder and locked in place. A vice can be used to retract the piston. Simply remove the damper from the engine, place it between vice jaws and slowly compress the piston. Once compressed, line up the holes in the piston with the holes in the cylinder and insert a pin to hold the piston in place. The Hydraulic Tensioner Pin Set is and the only tool, created just for this purpose. See page A10 for details.

Automatic Spring Loaded TensionerAlsoknownasfrictionaltensioner.OEManufacturersareincreasingtheirusageeach year because this type of tensioner provides a more consistent belt tension that can react and adjust to todays high revving engines. Gates carries several of these tensioners, many of which were only available through the OE until now.

Proper installation of these tensioners is critical and installation instructions must be followed. Once installed, belt installation is generally very simple. In most cases a hex-headwrenchisusedtorotatethetensionerintoapositionthatpermitsthebeltto slip into place. Once the belt is in place the tensioner is allowed to return to its relaxed position, applying the necessary tension.

When replacing any timing component always refer to the vehicles Service Manual for the most complete timing belt replacement instructions.

Arm Torque from the spring is transmitted to the pulley through this precision aluminum component, providing a constant belt tension. Includes operation range stops that impede kickback.

Spring Designed with a specific torque for each application, this essential component provides the critical belt tension.

Spring Support This highly wear resistant, engineered polymer provides secondary damping for an efficient timing belt system.

Pivot Shaft Sustains alignment between the tensioner arm and pulley.

Base Plate Assures proper positioning on the engine while providingthesecondaryanti-kickbackelement.

NOTE: PowerGrip Automatic Tensioners are not serviceable and should never be disassembled. These components are under a spring load and attempting to disassemble can cause injury.

One out of every three passenger cars and light trucks use a timing belt to transmit powerfromthecrankshafttothecamshaft(s).Most4-cylinderandV-6engines,aswellasafewV-8s,useatimingbelt.Thetimingbeltiscriticaltotheenginebecauseitsetsthe engines fuel/air and exhaust valves in motion.

There are two basic types of engines using timing belts, conventional and interference. If a timing belt on a conventional type fails there is generally no additional engine damage, the engine simply can no longer function. However, many engines utilize the interference design. This design allows for better power and fuel efficiency, but the valve to piston timing is extremely vital.

If the timing belt fails the pistons will collide with valves. This type of failure is one of the most costly repairs to a vehicle.

Whether your customers vehicle utilizes a conventional or interference engine, these failures can be avoided by adhering to the OEM recommended replacement intervals and preventative maintenance. Typically an automaker recommends a timing belt replacement at about 60,000 miles, but certain make and models require replacement at an earlier or later interval. Also, severe conditions such as towing, aggressive driving and maintenance history need to be considered.

The most common type of timing belt failure is through a failed bearing within the timing belt system pulley. Below are some pulley failure modes to help you recognize a failing pulley:

Misalignment: Misalignment can be determined by rotating the pulley. Does it wobble or is there roughness felt when spinning the pulley? Is the pulley bracket worn or broken? Has the pulley been installed correctly and all foreign material (grease, grime) removed from behind the mount? And finally, are all the bolts tightened to specification?

Locked Pulley: A worn bearing commonly causes a locked or seized pulley. It could also be a result of improper installation or the pulley coming into contact with another object. Pulley surface discoloration is a direct result of a locked pulley.

Damaged Pulley Surface: A pitted, cracked, uneven, discolored or chipped pulley should alwaysbereplaced.Foreignmaterialbuild-uponthepulleysurfaceisalsoanissueandshould be removed or replace the pulley.

Noise: Noise is a result of a failing bearing or improper belt tension. Replace the pulley if the bearing is failing. In the case of improper tension, the use of a tension meter is always recommended. Timing Belt Tensioning Tester, is an excellent and simple tool for this task. See page A10 for details.

Damaged Pulley Bearing Seal: Grease leaking from the front or back of a pulley is an indicator of the bearing seal being damaged and the bearing will soon fail.

Many times you can diagnose a timing belt system problem by looking at the belts appearance.

The chart on page A9 lists several of the conditions you may find.

Synchronous belts have been used on automotive camshaft drives for more than 20 years . Our belts will give OEM equivalent service if the following points are observed .

StorageBelts should be kept in their original packaging until needed . Store in an environment which avoids:

Temperature extremes

Direct sunlight

High humidity

Contamination by oil, water, chemicals, etc.

HandlingIt is important that belts are not crimped during handling since this could seriously damage the tensile members and lead to premature failure .

Installation TipsIMPORTANT: Avoid crimping the belt when installing it on pulleys no tools should be used on the belt .

Replace and properly refit timing cover to prevent drive contamination by foreign matter .

ReplacementFollow vehicle manufacturers instructions regarding belt replacement intervals . Note: If belt is removed, a new belt should be installed . If engine is being repaired and belt is near OEM recommended replacement interval, replace the belt .

Chrysler 2.0 L SOHC Timing Drive Tensioner TroubleshootingThe 2.0L Chrysler engine has gone through several timing belt tensioner design changessinceitsintroductionin1995-96.Threedifferenttimingbelttensionerswere used between 1995 and 2005, and tensioner T43132 is the recommended replacement for all three. T43132 is included in TCK245A.

First design 1995-1998The 2.0L engine was originally produced with a hydraulic timing belt tensioner. The pulley used with this design can be serviced with pulley part number T41002, which is included in TCK245. However, the recommended replacement is tensioner T43132.

NOTE: Previous timing belt replacement(s) may have utilized the T43132 design. Check components on vehicle to make sure the correct kit is selected.

Second design 1998-2001The second timing belt tensioner design is no longer available. The recommended replacement is tensioner T43132 which is provided in TCK245A.

Third design 2001-2005Tensioner T43132 is a direct replacement for this design. The tensioner without the bracket is available as part number T43001. This tensioner (without bracket) is included in TCK245B.

After installation is complete, with the top timing belt cover removed, start the vehicle, and from a safe distance observe the timing belt. Belt should be tracking straight and consistent over the cam shaft sprockets. Shut off vehicle and check tensioner for proper adjustment. Installation instruc-tions for tensioning must be followed completely. Cam shafts must be secured with cam sprockets free to rotate on shafts prior to adjusting the tensioner. Repeat this procedure until proper tensioner adjustment is achieved. Improper tension will cause the belt to track off the drive. Do not attempt to adjust tension while the engine is running.

TCK294AThe upper idler (T42036) in TCK 294A has an outside diameter of 60mm.

TCK294BTCK294B uses the same upper idler as TCK294A and does NOT have a lower idler pulley.
