Bumbilya

Patay, sindi.Patay, sindi.

Dengue Prevention

This photograph shows a mother applying mosquito re-

pellent to her child’s skin in order to prevent mosquitoes

from biting.

How to reduce your risk of dengue infection:There is no vaccine available against dengue, and there are no specific medicationsto treat a dengue infection. This makes prevention the most important step, and pre-vention means avoiding mosquito bites if you live in or travel to an endemic area.

The best way to reduce mosquitoes is to eliminate the places where the mosquitolays her eggs, like artificial containers that hold water in and around the home. Out-doors, clean water containers like pet and animal watering containers, flower planterdishes or cover water storage barrels. Look for standing water indoors such as invases with fresh flowers and clean at least once a week.

The adult mosquitoes like to bite inside as well as around homes, during the day andat night when the lights are on. To protect yourself, use repellent on your skin whileindoors or out. When possible, wear long sleeves and pants for additional protec-tion. Also, make sure window and door screens are secure and without holes. Ifavailable, use air-conditioning.

If someone in your house is ill with dengue, take extra pre-cautions to prevent mosquitoes from biting the patient andgoing on to bite others in the household. Sleep under a mos-quito bed net, eliminate mosquitoes you find indoors andwear repellent!

RED ALERT for the Community: HOW TO AVOID DENGUE

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH reports almost 78,000 dengue cases from January 1to September 5, 2015, higher by 16.5% than last year.

There have been 233 deaths recorded.

DOH urges public to eliminate all possible breeding places of mosquitoes.

Last month, after confirming a full yearwithout a single case of wild poliovirus, Ni-geria was removed from the list of theworld's polio-endemic countries. It was thelast polio-endemic country in Africa. Today,

only two countries – Afghanistan and Paki-stan – harbor the world's final reservoir ofendemic poliovirus. As this issue of TheRotarian goes to press, global cases ofpolio in 2015 number only a few dozen.

e scale of this achievement can hardly be overstated. Polios existed for millennia; it has plagued humanity since our earli-t civilizations. Today, because of Rotary's work and that of ourrtners, the end is in sight. We are counting down not in years,t in months.

nd yet, our success is as fragile as it is monumental. We areoving forward, slowly, steadily, inexorably – thanks to colossal

forts that never cease. We continue to vaccinate hundreds ofllions of children in vast synchronized campaigns; we con-antly monitor environments to prevent new outbreaks. Theeer scale of the effort – the coordination, the cost, and themmitment – boggles the mind.

ome ask why such high levels of immunization and surveillancee still needed to combat a disease that is almost gone. Theswer is simple: It is the only way forward. If we did anything

ss – if we allowed the virus any quarter  – years of work wouldundone. We know too well how easily polio could spreadain. We know how quickly our decades of progress could be

st. And this is why the months ahead are so tremendously im-rtant. We need your voice – to raise awareness, to raise

nds, and to keep the momentum going. We need your strengthhelp fight this war until we have won.

n 24 October, we mark World Polio Day. I hope that on thaty, all of you will take part in some way in our work to eradicatelio. I know that many of you intend to publicize this event on

e club or district level; for those who have not yet made plans, ere are still many ways to participate. Visit endpolionow.org foreas, tools, sample press releases, and ways to donate.

ou'll also find the link to our livestream event; be sure to join in,d share it on social media.is war of ours – which started as a war against polio but is

so a war against hatred, against ignorance, against fear  – this

ar will be won. It will be won soon. And when it is won, all ofotary will have a story to tell – to the children, and the grand-ildren, who will never see a leg brace or an iron lung, or knowworld with polio in it.

hether you are a Rotarian in Kano or Peshawar or Swat, ineoul or Madrid or Chicago – you are a part of this story. Yourrt in it is one that only you can write. I ask you all to write it

ell – so that the story you will one day tell is one of which youl be proud.

Foundation Chairman’s October 2015 Messa

The 2016-17 Rotary year will be the cetennial year for The Rotary Foundationwhich started at the 1917 Rotary convetion in Atlanta. This issue of The Rotarmagazine is filled with information abo

the exciting 2016 convention to be heldSeoul, 28 May-1 June – and part of theexcitement is due to the kickoff activitiefor the Foundation's centennial celebra

The Foundation has a Centennial Celetion Committee, which is chaired by Past Trustee StephanieUrchick, and the committee has comprehensive plans for a year of celebratory events, which will culminate in a giant cebration at the 2017 Rotary convention in Atlanta. The Foundtion trustees, Rotary International directors, and Rotary stafmembers are all committed to a successful recognition of thFoundation's anniversary because of the Foundation's sign

cant role in helping our clubs and districts to conduct servicprojects around the world.

The Rotary Foundation clearly has been a tremendous forcDoing Good in the World! And as we contemplate our high-level plans for the centennwe once more pause to recognize and appreciate that the tity of what happens in our clubs and districts is far bigger anlonger-lasting than what happens in Evanston and at the coventions. As a result, the true success of the centennial celebration will depend on the quality and quantity of the celebratory events in our clubs and districts. The big question iswhether our Rotarians around the globe will embrace the Fdation's centennial and undertake their own centennial proj

and celebrations. So please do your part to stimulate the intest and involvement of your club.

The Rotary Foundation has been highly successful in assisour clubs and districts to promote international understandingoodwill, and peace in the world  – and therefore, it is approate that all of our clubs and districts should participate in thecentennial celebration. As usual in Rotary, there is no pre-scribed way in which the clubs and districts should join the cbration, and I hope our clubs and districts will be as creativetheir celebratory activities as they have been in their myriadhumanitarian projects throughout the years. This is the rightime for all of us to express our appreciation for The Rotary
