The Transfiguration
Snogren, John. The Transfiguration.
St. Theresa Catholic Church Sanctuary, Houston.
Hand-painted triptych-Icon, designed by Winifred Huguley Blair.
FROM DEACON LARRY
T he Transfiguration and the coronavirus make an odd couple on this Second Sun-day of Lent. There is so
much happening in this Gospel ac-count. Even the icon featured on the bulletin cover —a wonderful gift from a parishioner— captures but a moment in the unfolding of this sto-ry. After clothes white as light, Mo-ses and Elijah, and the desire to stay on the mountain, the scene shifts. Peter wanted to stay at the spiritual heights. But the three apostles fall to the ground upon hearing the voice! It is then that we hear these powerful words: “But Jesus came and touched them and said, ‘Rise, and do not be afraid.’’’
The touch is so much a sign of who Jesus is as the “face of the Fa-ther’s mercy,” as Pope Francis wrote in Misericordiae Vultus. Under the specter of the coronavirus risk, we have adopted a “no handshake re-quired” sign of peace and have shift-ed to Communion in the hand as the norm. Companies and conferences around the country are introducing handshake-free events and are bow-ing to replace handshakes. This, along with a heightened awareness of the importance of handwashing, can have a secondary effect beyond safety from the virus. Now, those who used to be seen as our sisters and brothers are viewed as potential risks, possible carriers of the dread coronavirus.
But the touch of Jesus and his words of courage remind us that the call of the Christian life is one of solidarity. When Jesus touched his apostles, he called them to rise up and be their better selves. In the icon, we see those apostles fallen and cowering while Jesus is calling
them —and us— to new life, to the fullness of life, to life lived with courage. Jesus and the three apostles come down the mountain to where life is lived in all its ordinary every-dayness. Peter, James, and John lead us to the valley where we live in sol-idarity. Sisters and brothers, as we struggle with the risk of the spread of the coronavirus among us, let us keep before us not the image of our separateness but of our solidarity. Above the parish office, look up and you will see affixed to our building the opening words to the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World from the Second Vat-ican Council. May we never tire of reading and living this call to soli-darity.
“The joy and hope, the grief and anguish of the people of our time,
especially of those who are poor or afflicted in any way,
are the joy and hope, the grief and anguish of the followers of Christ as well.
Indeed, nothing genuinely human fails to raise an echo
in their hearts.”
Blessings in Solidarity in this Holy Season of Lent, Deacon Larry

As we pray, fast and give during the season of Lent we thank you for doing the things that involve the body, the mind, and the heart and for your continuous support. We are also thankful for those who have increased their stewardship donations, which help with the shortfall. Your ongoing support is needed to help us to achieve our goals. Let’s help our parish ministries to flourish through your generous support, please prayerfully assess your stewardship participation. If you are transitioning to electronic recurring giving or would like to increase your electronic contributions, we can help walk you through this process. Please call 713-869-3783.
W e are extremely thank-ful to all who have par-ticipated in our cam-
paign, as of 3/3/20 we have re-ceived $9.4M out of $11.8M pledges toward our $14.1M goal. Our Church looks beautiful but we’re not done yet! In the next weeks, you will start to notice the construction of the rectory in the back parking lot, which is the last building included in Phase II.
With $2.8M short of our goal, we need those who have not yet par-ticipated, those whose pledge is about to end, and those whose commitment has been fulfilled, to support us, extend, and/or create a new pledge. St. Theresa, your church needs your continuous support. We need those of you who care to go above and beyond.
Please know that the
entire parish thanks you
with all our hearts.
For those of you, who would care to do more,
please reach out to Johanna Bransford at
[email protected] or 713-869-3783.

VISIT CHRIST IN PRISON
Wash clean my heart, O God; And fill me again with thy joy.
Here is my mind; I open it to thee. Forgive its illusions and its delusions.
Teach me to discern thy truth. Cleanse me of my need to criticize and judge others harshly.
Teach me to see only thee, everywhere and in everyone.
Here is my life; I offer it to thee. Forgive my resistance to thy direction.
Cleanse me and redirect my path according to thy will.
Here are my feelings; I surrender them all to thee. Forgive my dissatisfactions;
Forgive my restlessness; Forgive my discouragements;
Forgive my empty joys and my false hopes. Forgive my fears and teach me to trust three alone. Forgive my petty loves and my consuming hates.
Teach me to love as thou dost love And to forgive us thou dost forgive.
Here is my body; I lay it down before thee. Restore unto me thy vision of health and vitality.
Restore in me the sure knowledge of thy presence, That I may awake in the likeness and be complete,
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
