New College, Wellington – Early Years Read the first two pages first (please) Background to this archive I copied the photographs in this file a few years ago when the then Principal of New College gave me permission to do so and ‘do what you want with them.’ I hadn’t intended extending my interest beyond saving documentary evidence relating to the Girls’ High School, the Boys’ High School and the Boys’ Grammar School but I’ve learned over the years that irreplaceable archives need to be copied before they are destroyed through ignorance or lack of appreciation. So I included these notes on the early years of New College, Wellington. The records pertaining to those years are relatively scarce, a reflection of the lack of interest in local history shown by both schools and Council authorities in this area since the inception of the Telford conurbation (please don’t call it a ‘town’, new or otherwise: it’s not). The days when photographs and documents recording school and pupil activities were diligently preserved as a matter of course have almost gone, yet the psychological and social needs of many people wishing to know more about their ancestors and predecessors has probably never before been so actively pursued by ‘ordinary’ folk, including family historians and adherents of ‘social media’ like Facebook. Wellington History Group, of which I’m a member, receives numerous enquiries and it’s becoming increasingly frustrating not being able to help because public institutions can’t be bothered to preserve, extend or maintain the archives on their own premises. New College Records in this file The photograph of the College frontage was taken in 1975, the year in which New College was ‘born’ in Wellington. The newspaper cutting was already in my collection, as were the 1976 Speech Day pages. The photo of New College staff appears to date to the mid 1980s. The remaining items (photographs) in this file were the contents of several large envelopes and boxes kept by the College in a storeroom. They were in no particular order. A (very) few other photos have been supplied by internet aficionados and, while not necessarily of passable clarity, have been included as essential additions to this collection. Regrettably, none of the Tutorial Group photos is dated (although they appear to cover the first ten years of the College’s existence), nor do they always record the names of the people shown in them. Even those that do don’t always include the tutor’s name or initials. Furthermore, photos that do benefit from names aren’t necessarily as clear as they could be because the legibility of handwritten detail varies. In spite of these shortcomings, the contents of this file are available to for personal use only via Wellington History Group’s web site as a free-to-download publication. These images are not copyright free, so please don’t copy anything for posting on social media or for commercial purposes without checking with me first. See the next page for details of how you can help improve the information relating to the photos both for yourself and for others who may have an interest in them. One of the most common problems associated with historic photos is that names, dates and other important detail is seldom recorded. With your help, we can correct past oversights. Background to this archive

I copied the photographs in this file a few years ago when the then Principal of New College gave me permission to do so and ‘do what you want with them.’ I hadn’t intended extending my interest beyond saving documentary evidence relating to the Girls’ High School, the Boys’ High School and the Boys’ Grammar School but I’ve learned over the years that irreplaceable archives need to be copied before they are destroyed through ignorance or lack of appreciation.

New College Records in this file

The photograph of the College frontage was taken in 1975, the year in which New College was ‘born’ in Wellington.

How you can help improve information for others

Each Tutorial Group photo has filename prefix, e.g. ‘NC TG-‘, where NC = New College and TG- = Tutorial Group; the filename includes the surname (where known) of the tutor, followed by forename or initials (e.g. ’NC TG-Suart, G.jpg), plus a consecutive number if more than one photo is of a different Group for which that person was tutor, (e.g. ‘NC TG-Hartley, JA 1.jpg’, ‘NC TG-Hartley, JA 2.jpg’, etc.).

There are some instances where only the tutor’s initials are known, so the filename reflects this, e.g. ‘NC TG-DEC Who.jpg’, where ‘Who’ (and, if known ‘Mr’, ‘Mrs’ or ‘Miss’) has been added to signify more detailed information is needed (e.g. the tutor’s forename or initials plus surname). Similarly, no detail at all has been given for some photos, so their filenames are along the lines of ‘NC TG-Who n’, where n = the consecutive number allocated to that particular photo in this range.

Each photo is shown on its own page in the file with whatever information came with it. The page also shows the photo’s unique filename ending in ‘.jpg’.

If you have information relating to any of the photos, please prepare a WORD.doc file in the following format for each photo for which you can supply information, i.e.

1. The full filename of the photo for which you are supplying information.

2. The date of the photo (if known; a year or (better still) academic year will do).

3. The names (in order) as follows: Back row, from left to right … Centre row … Front row … If there are more than three rows of people, number them (e.g. for four rows, call them Back row, Third Row, Second row, Front row, etc., with names always listed from left to right). Enter first (or initial(s)) and last name of each person (e.g., ‘F. Bloggs, Freda Bloggs’) or put ‘-?-‘ if a name isn’t known, or ‘?’ followed by surname if the first name or initial isn’t known (e.g. ‘? Bloggs’), or a first name or initial followed by ‘?’ if the surname isn’t known (e.g. ‘F. ?’ or ‘Fred ?’. Finally if you think you know a name but aren’t absolutely certain, enter it followed by a ‘?’ (e.g. ‘Fred Bloggs?’). Separate each person’sname with a comma.

4. Even if handwritten names appear with a photo, please help by typing them as mentioned above. This is simply to ensure misinterpretation is avoided to ultimately produce an editable WORD file which could accompany or be added to an updated .pdf file.

5. Add any other relevant information appropriate to that photo before moving on to the next one with which you can help.

6. Please remember that ALL information is important and useful, provided that it is accurate.

7. Send your WORD file as an email attachment to Wellington History Group’s secretary at [email protected] who will forward it to me.

8. If you have any questions regarding this New College Early Years file, please also send them to me via that email address. And contact me if you would like a higher resolution .jpg copy of any of the photos (with comments and the ‘Wellington History Group’ watermark removed) to print yourself; a small payment will be required.

Thank you

New Colleg~ Telford's ~~eX~;tTng new development When New College

opens in September, 197 5, it will provide sixth form education for pupils currently attending the Girls' High School and the Boys' Grammar School plus those pupils who wish to transfer to it at the age of 16 from other schools in the north Telford area, including Newport.

After 1978 there will be no furlher t.raMfer from the grammar schools and QY l~tiu tbe collese will consist of atudents who have attended compreben· sive secondary achoola.

At an early stage ln the planning of the colleae lt was recogniaed that cloae attention must be paid to the changes taking place nationally in post-16 education and to the way in which New College .vould relate to other educational establishment&.

Planning for the college has proceeded through s tudy of 'Vhat is being achieved successfully in similar colleges in other parts of the country and br discusaions among the star , ~overnors and other mterested groups in the area.

Among the demands which the college ia

in education for the 16.: 19 year o lds designed to meet are those being made by employers for an increasin~ proportion or the population to have high e d uc a t i o na l attainment. This must serve as preparation for the eme rging pattern - of successive careers within a person's working life with a p ec i fie training and re-training based on a broad foundation of general education.

The college will therefo re accept full· time students who are prepared to take full advantage of what is offered, irrespec tive of the level of their previous attainment.

Motivation It will provide courses for

a broad spectrum of interests. These will include the t raditional qualifications for higher education and the professions and in addition, other courses which are designed to be relevant to the increasing number of career opportunities in commerce~ industry and services wnich are open to the seventeen to nineteen age group.

Strong emphasis will bt> placed on general personal d evelop ment for al l student&.

The policy of admitting any student& who is prepared to study to the best of his or her ability is so m eLi m es called "open·access." However, the demand for motivation and participation in the college is real and any student who is not pre pared to meet these demands may be aslted to leave.

The curriculum has been divided into t wo sectlons. The first involvin!l · all students, will consist of a pattern of "core studies" providing a !ramework from which specialist work will gain relevance, coupled with a n activities-recreational afternoon.

The second section called elective studies :,;m include a new area of work, known as extension studies! together with GCE 0 Leve and A Level and preparation f or sc h o l ars h i p examinations. Within this section students will select courses to suiL their requirements.

As more and more local e duca t ion a uthori t ies establish sixth form colleges and as more and more schools In both the maintained and private sectors e#labllah separated sixth from centre&, the

MR STEPHEN<; ON

advantage of a break at the age of 16 becomes clearer.

One is that the nature of such a college can be such that fresh relationships are fo rmed with staff m an a du lt aL m osp b ere specifically created for this crucially important age group. This facilitates t.ne difficult t ransition from school to work or higher educat ion and provides the fresh start which is required for some students, including those who are sometimes called late developers.

Another advantage is that the concentration of resources provides a wide range of opportunities., for example, Advanced Level GCE courses will be available in more than 20 subjects which may be combined in hundreds of d ifferent ways. These s ubjects include all those normally found in schools plus many which are less common.

The encouragement of genera l perso n al development will be catered for through a system of tutorial guidance which is fu n damental to the structure of the college. Each student will be assigned to a personal tutor who will be responsible for assistance with personal problems, course selection, the d evelopment of self·d iscipl ine in study and behaviour and also for the direction of individual work wilhin the core studies programme.

Reports The work of the tutors in

each year group will be co·ordinated by the head of year and senior tutor. Specialise assistance will also be available, for example, from a team of staff with

expertise in the field of careers education.

Regular contact between the college and parents will be arranged. This contact will take place in a number of ways. Reports on progress in &tudy and on ot h er aspects of development will be Issued at regular intervals and meetings will be held to enable parents lo discusa lho progreAs of their son or daughter individually with staff. Parent& will also be encouraged to contact. staff at other times when they feel that this will be helpful and staff will contact parents individually if the need arises.

In additional there will be an association through which parents can establish informal contact with the college in a programme of general interest and social function.c;.

Throughout the period of planning activity, the staff have been keenly aware of the responsibilities and obli~ations to existin~ pupals in the grammar and high schools. Every effort has been made to ensure lhe undisturbed progress and smooth runnmg of the5e schools and a major consideration in the coming

years will be the very special relationship between the c o llege a 'ld the Grammar-High School.

Effective

In short, a mlijor exercise in re-organisation is taking place. It involves the combination of two lar~e single·sex schools and thear redivision on the basis or nee being undertaken at lhe same time as the change of sixth form provision to a fully comprehensive systl!m.

When the re·organtSataon has taken place and New College is in operation, North Teliord will have a new style of educational establishment or a kind which has been pioneered in a number of other counties and of a type which is rapidly becoming ~ccepted as an effective, efficient and economic way of meeting the requirements or a substantial part of the expending proportion of tht> population seeking post·l6 education.
