READINGS MASSES INTENTIONS READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Proverbs 9:1-6 A rich woman invites many guests to her home to eat and drink. She appeals to those who lack understanding to forsake foolishness and “advance in the way of understanding.” Second Reading: Ephesians 5:15-20 Paul advises the Ephesians to abandon foolish ways and evil deeds. All Christians should concentrate on doing God’s will before all other things. He reminds them to always give thanks to God in the name of Jesus Christ. Gospel: John 6:51-58 Jesus had just told the crowd that anyone who ate of the bread he planned to give would live forever, and that this bread was his flesh, which he would give up for the sake of the world. The people do not understand, but Jesus reassures them that his flesh is real food and that “those who feed on this bread shall live forever.” Daily Readings for the Week Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday Jgs 2:11-19; Mt 19:16-22 Tuesday Jgs 6:11-24a; Mt 19:23-30 Wednesday Jgs 9:6-15; Mt 20:1-16 Thursday Jgs 11:29-39a; Mt 22:1-14 Friday Ru 1:1, 3-6, 14b-16, 22; Mt 22:34-40 Saturday Ru 2:1-3, 8-11, 4:13-17; Mt 23:1-12 SANCTUARY CANDLE In Memory of: Rita Farina Requested By: St. Simon Stock Parish CONFESSIONS: Confessions are held every Saturday from 3:15 – 3:45 pm in the Church. DIOCESE OF CAMDEN Office of Child & Youth Protection

“We can be sure that we love God’s children when

we love God and do what he has commanded.” 1 John 5:2 The Office of Child and Youth Protection is announcing CAP (Child Assault Prevention) sessions. CAP is the safe environment training program for adults who have regular contact with minors. Attendance is required in order to comply with the USCCB’s Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The policy of the Diocese of Camden is that adults will attend CAP once every five years. CAP 1 teaches attendees to recognize child abuse and neglect and how to report to the proper authorities. Adults are taught that children have the right to be safe, strong and free. CAP 1 is for new volunteers and employees.

CAP 2 is called No More Bullies, No More Victims and is a workshop addressing bullying awareness and bullying prevention. Cyber-bullying is also presented. CAP 3 is called Cyber-Empowerment and is a workshop which promotes adults understanding of cyber activity of youth while teaching them realistic ways to help children keep their own rights and guard the rights of others in the cyber-sphere. Each presentation is 90 minutes.

Adults who are new employees or volunteers should attend CAP 1 before attending CAP 2 or CAP 3. After five years, adults have the option of attending CAP 1, 2 or 3 when they renew their CAP.

40 DAYS OF FRANCIS

This Monday, August 17, will mark exactly 40 days until the arrival of Pope Francis in Philadelphia on September 26. Forty days is a number of great religious significance. It’s the number of years Moses and the Israelites wandered the desert; it’s the number of days Jesus fasted and prayed before beginning his public ministry; and it’s the number of days Catholics spend preparing for Jesus’ Passion, death and resurrection during Lent. During these 40 Days of Francis, Catholic Charities invites you to prepare for the coming of this Pope of and for the poor by “encountering” the reality of poverty in the Diocese of Camden. After Mass this weekend, you will find “knots” at the back of the Church that you can take home with you. These knots, inspired by Pope Francis’ devotion to Our Lady, Undoer of Knots, represent the knots of poverty so many in South Jersey face. We invite you to come visit the Catholic Charities center near you to learn how we as a Catholic community respond to these issues and help untie the knots. Next week, we will hold open houses at all of our centers throughout the Diocese of Camden. We’re looking forward to seeing you! 8
