Things that affect the costsof roofing a house or garageBy C. Dwight BarnettTribune News Service

Q: My garageroof has shinglesthat are worn andweathered. Underwhat conditionswould it be advis-able to lay a sec-ond layer of shin-gles over theexisting layer? Iwould assumethere are cost sav-ings doing this. There is currentlyonly one layer ofshingles on theroof and no leaksin the building.

A: Most peoplewill choose to roofover the first layerof shingles due tocosts. If the areaaround the buildingis accessible andonly one story high, the costs to removeand replace theolder shingles isabout twice the costof a roof-over. Someof the things thatcan affect the costsof roofing a house orgarage are: howmany stories thebuilding is, thesteepness of thepitch or slope of theroof, accessibility tothe building and thestyle or type of shin-gles.

Typically a garageis a 4/12 pitch, thatis, the rafter willhave a vertical riseof 4 inches every 12inches in horizontallength of the wallbelow it. The steep-er the slope of theroof the better whenadding a second

layer of shingles. Iwould not recom-mend adding a sec-ond layer unless theroof is a 6/12 orsteeper angle.

Next, check thesize of the raftersand the spacingbetween the rafters.A two-by-four-inchrafter set every 24inches along thebearing wall maynot adequately sup-port the addedweight of a secondlayer of shingles.Check the collarties, the two-by-fouror two-by-six boardsthat span from onebearing wall to theother.

There should beone collar tie foreach set of rafters.Collar ties preventthe walls fromspreading under theweight of the roof.Add collar ties ifneeded. If therafters are prebuilttrusses, they shouldbe checked by aqualified homeinspector, roofer orcarpenter beforeadding the extraweight.

Inspect the roof ’sdecking. It would bewise to remove theolder shingles andreplace damageddecking. You alsohave to consider theweight of the shin-gles you choose.Shingles vary inweight per bundle.Shingles are typical-ly sold per square(100-square feet)and are marketedby the number of

years they areexpected to performunder normalweather conditions.A shingle that isexpected to last 20years will not be asheavy as a 40- or50-year shingle. Theweight per squarecan be supplied bythe supplier or man-ufacturer.

Next, consider thelongevity of theproduct. A secondlayer of shingles willnot last as long as asingle layer.

Finally, what isthe condition of theoriginal layer ofshingles? Shinglesthat are cupped, cracked or are lift-ing can ghostthrough the secondlayer of shinglesand are not onlyunsightly but willcause advancedwear to the newlayer.

How to remove driedblood from carpetBy Angie HicksAngie’s List

Dear Angie:How do I removeweek-old bloodfrom light beigepile carpet?

– Sue T. ofRichardson, Texas

Dear Sue: It’salways best to dealwith a blood stainbefore it has achance to dry. Manytimes, all you haveto do is dab the areawith a clean clothand cold water.

However, whenblood dries, it bindsto carpet fibers. If itsits awhile, it canbecome more deeplyembedded by foottraffic.

Still, there aretechniques you cantry that may workto remove driedblood. The first step, say pros, is to brushor scrape the areato loosen the blood. After vacuumingthe bits, apply coldwater and blot untilthe stain fades ordisappears.Afterward, rinse ordab the area withhydrogen peroxide,a natural oxidizer.

If that doesn’twork, some pros rec-ommend using solu-tions that vary, depending on thecarpet material.

For synthetic-fiber carpets, applya mixture of twotablespoons ofhousehold ammoniaand one cup of coldwater. For wool car-pet, use a solutionof two cups coldwater and one tea-

spoon of liquid dish-washing liquid. Some pros warn, however, that thesoapy solution couldleave residue thatmay attract dirt andoils.

Whether you treatthe blood stain withplain water or asolution, take careto thoroughly blotthe area with aclean towel. Don’tapply too muchwater or solution, orharshly rub thearea, or you mayspread the stain orpush it further intothe carpet.

After blotting thearea, run a wet/dryvacuum over thearea, then cover it aclean paper towel, weighing it downwith a book or some-thing heavy so itabsorbs more of thestain and liquid.

If the spot turnsbrown after drying, apply a mixture ofone cup of vinegarand two cups ofwarm water. Repeatonce. Blot clean andlet dry as before.

If there’s still evi-dence of the stain, consider consultinga professional carpetcleaner. Considerthose who have posi-tive reviews on atrusted consumersite and who areappropriatelylicensed, insuredand bonded. Angie’sList members reportpaying $25 to $75per room for carpetcleaning, with thecost varying depend-ing on where theylive.

Putting yourtrash cans out ongarbage pickup dayalmost alwaysleaves the discard-ed items open to avariety of pryingeyes.

DEAR MR.MYERS: Twomen in a beat-upold truck drivedown our streetin the earlymorning hours oftrash pickup dayevery week, rum-maging througheach homeown-er’s trash bins tolook for stuffthat can be sal-vaged. Thismakes meextremelyuncomfortable, because I don’twant people tosee what I’mthrowing out, whether it’s per-sonal correspon-dence, emptyprescription bot-tles or otheritems. The policesay the two menaren’t doing any-thing illegalbecause someonewho puts his orher trash out forcollection on apublic street has“no expectationof privacy.” Isthis true, or arethe cops just toolazy to care?

ANSWER: Thepolice are correct.Anytime you putyour trash out forcollection, every-thing in the bin isopen to prying eyes– whether theybelong to salvagers,law-enforcementagencies or simply

a nosy neighborwho wants to learnmore about yourprivate life.

This concept wascemented by alandmark case,California v.Greenwood, whichwas decided by theU.S. SupremeCourt in 1988.Billy Greenwoodwas arrested afterpolice found somedrug paraphernaliain his trash canand then proceededto get a warrant tosearch his home.Inside, they foundeven more.

Greenwoodargued that hiseventual convictionshould be tossedout because thewarrantless searchof his garbage vio-lated his FourthAmendment rightto protectionagainst “unreason-able searches andseizures.” But thecourt rejected thatargument, notingthat Greenwoodhad voluntarilyplaced his trash ina highly traffickedarea where it couldeasily be viewed byanyone, whether agarbage collector, scavengers, school-children, neighborsor – in this case –law-enforcementofficials.

The court upheldGreenwood’s con-viction, therebymaking it “openseason” on any-thing that home-owners and rentersmight toss away inthe future.

Though there’snothing you canlegally do to stop

people from snoop-ing through thecans or bins youput out on a publicstreet on garbagepickup day, thereare a few steps youcan take to ensureat least some levelof privacy.

One is to use apaper shredder todestroy sensitivedocuments, whether it’s oldlove letters, bankstatements or cer-tain types ofreceipts. Labels onempty prescriptionbottles can besoaked off andshredded, too.

Also, keep yourbins as close toyour home as youcan, and try to putthem out as late aspossible on pickupday. Though youcan’t stop folksfrom rummaging

through your trashonce it’s on a publicstreet, it’s illegalfor them to tres-pass on your pri-vate property to geta glimpse of thestuff you’re throw-ing away.

MYERS: Weappreciated yourrecent columnabout the recallsthat Big Lots and

We boughtone of thosechairs twomonths ago butnever got a recallnotice, so wepromptly took itback after read-ing your column, and got a fullrefund of the$400 we paid.Would it be possi-ble to keep yourreaders up-to-date on otherrecalls of home-related items ona regular basis?

ANSWER: Anumber of otherreaders have madesimilar requests, soI’ll begin includingsuch recall noticeson a semiregular

basis – startingtoday.

Two major recallswere announced inlate June. The firstinvolves about24,000 Worx brandleaf blowers andvacuums, distrib-uted by PositecTool Corp. and soldthrough Wal-Martand Menards storesbetween Januaryand May of thisyear for about $40.The grounded andungrounded wiringin some of theWG507 modelscould be reversed, causing a shockhazard to users.

Owners shouldstop using theblowers immediate-ly and contactPositec (866-955-4579,www.worx.com) toget details about afull refund or

replacement.A bigger recall

involves severalmodels of morethan 110,000 “TopFin” plastic aquari-um heaters, soldnationwide by thePetSmart chainbetween August2014 and April2015 for $25 to$40. Again, awiring problemcould result in ashock to the user, and at least onehomeowner suf-fered propertydamage after theheater caught fire.

Owners can findout if they haveone of the defectiveheaters by contact-ing PetSmart (888-839-9638,www.petsmart.com).

They came northout of Mexico intothe desert south-west with theSpanish, thoughnobody knows theiractual point of ori-gin. It’s because somany pre-Columbian cul-tures, including theAztecs, utilized thegreat blue agave, soit had been spreadall overMesoamerica inthis early cultiva-tion. A plant so use-ful was highly val-ued as a source offiber, living fencing, food and of course, the ancient fer-mented beveragecalled “pulque.”

Linnaeus recog-nized this as thequintessentialspecies by namingit Agave americana.Few other agavesare so adaptable, and since introduc-tion it has spreadthroughout much ofthe Southern statesdue to a unique tol-erance of heavysoils, humidity andsummer rain. Thus,it makes a fine suc-culent accent forgardens where con-ditions aren’t suit-ed to the rest of itskin.

Years ago whensucculents firstgrew popular, anEnglish garden TV

show featured onebig potted Agaveamericana thatthey managed toinsert into manydifferent land-scapes. It wasplanted in a largepot because it won’tstand winter tem-peratures below 15degreesFahrenheit, sothey’d move it intoa greenhouse orsun porch for thewinter.

Agave americanais a big plant, sodesigners love itsperennial cool bluecoloring. However,a less vigorous formof the species is theyellow stripedAgave americana“Variegata” and thewhite striped A.americana “MedioPicta.” Thesedemonstrate itsvariability in size, habit and col-oration but maynot prove nearly asadaptable to bothwet summers andfrosty mornings.

A mature blueagave can produceleaves 4 to 5 feetlong, spreadingequally as wide. They are prone toproducing “pups”around the motherplant that candevelop over timeinto a huge colony. These pups areused to propagatenew plants quicklyand are an afford-able local source

for gardeners whentransplanted fromaround the mother.

Oddly enough thelifespan of theagave ends with asingle great flower-ing effort that pro-duces a massivestalk up to 26 feettall. Experts tell usexactly when flow-ering occurs is vari-able, too. In awarm winter cli-mate it flowersafter just 10 years, while the samespecies growing incooler climates canlive up to 35 years.

In the landscapethey are valued forthe uniformity ofsize and growth, which make this anideal agave formodern gardenswhere it can beplanted in pictureperfect rows andgrids. To keep the

agaves lookingtheir best in thisscenario, you maydecide to sever andtransplant all thepups as theyappear. This keepsthe original plantform in its pristinestate rather thanthe moundingresult of a parentsurrounded by aherd of babies.

However, in thenaturalistic succu-lent garden, thelook of a thrivingagave “family” isexactly what youwant. These big, bold conglomera-tions of succulentsmake powerfulnight-lighting sub-jects and valuableelements of oldergardens.

As the agavesage the lowerleaves may touchthe soil, which can

make it hard toclean out the litterthat accumulatesaround andbeneath them. Thelitter can get satu-rated and stayperennially dampin wetter climatesbecause there’s lit-tle evaporation inthe shade. Long-term moisturepotentially upagainst the rootcrown and leafbases can introducerot into the central

core of the plant. Some cooler dampclimate gardenersprefer to trim upthe lower leaves toallow sun to warmthe soil above theroot zone so it driesout and remains asclean as possible.

The best way toget started withAgave americana isto find local plantsand sever the pupsto transplant. These will be natu-rally adapted to the

local climate fromday one. Where noparent plants arearound, buy small-er individuals in 1gallon pots are bestto test their sur-vival over the firstsummer and winterin your garden. Ifit’s successful, waita few years to besure it stands up tothat rare super wetor super cold sea-son. If it survives, only then plantmore.

Q: Is it possibleto remove the fin-ish on a concretegarage floor(applied by apainter) that hasa rubbery tex-ture? Rainwaterfrom car andtires stand fordays, and thefloor is slick andslippery evenwhen dry. We’dlike to return thetexture to theoriginal roughfinish.

A: Depending onthe “rubbery” finishon the floor, youmay be able toremove it with adiamond blade floorgrinder. Concretefloors that havebeen poorly paint-ed, severelycracked or have arough finish can beground to a smoothsurface with thegrinder. Althoughconcrete grinders

and extra bladescan be obtainedfrom rental compa-nies, I wouldstrongly recom-mend the work beperformed by a pro-fessional.

A rubbery surfacecoating on the floormight stick to thegrinding blades anddamage the equip-ment. You wouldalso need a handgrinder to expandand clean cracks. Ifthere are chippedand damaged sec-tions of the floor, you will need a spe-cialty mixed con-crete to adhere tothe existing floor.

There will also belots of concrete dustand debris that willneed to be con-trolled with special-ized equipment toprotect both thehome and the work-ers. Once the floor

has been preparedfor a new covering, you can then decidewhether or not todo it yourself orhave it profession-ally finished. Thereare several videoson YouTube show-ing how to grind aconcrete floor.

Q: My househas soffit ventson the eaves, gable vents oneach end of thehouse and aridge vent. I livein NorthCarolina. Is thistoo much ventila-tion? Also, shouldthe vents to thecrawl space beopen in summerand closed inwinter?

A: I havereceived severalquestions and com-ments since writingabout attic ventila-

tion. The answer toyour questions canbe found on thewebsite of one ofthe major ridgevent manufacturingcompanies. At cor-a-vent.com theystate: “The ridgevent should not beused with otherroof mounted orgable end vents. They can disruptthe air flowthrough the attic.”When you havegable vents, theairflow coming inthrough the soffitor overhang ventscan be disrupted bycross ventilationfrom the gablevents. The ventingworks by air enter-ing through thesoffit vents, thentraveling up eachrafter space to exitthe roof throughthe ridge vent. Thewebsite also

explains how muchventilation is need-ed: “The ridge ventmust have at leastan equal amount ofsoffit ventilation tobalance the airflow. There can be moresoffit ventilation, but NEVER lesssoffit ventilationthan ridge ventila-tion.”

For new andremodeled con-struction I recom-

mend installing aridge vent and thatall the soffitsshould be made ofvinyl and all shouldbe vented. Solidvinyl soffit materialcosts the same asthe vented materi-al. If the homealready has a fan, roof vents or gablevents, these shouldbe blocked andsealed from theattic side of the

From paint chips to the perfect can of paintBy Cathy HobbsTribune News Service

Perhaps you havestood in the paintaisle staring at thepaint chips on dis-play, wonderingwhat to do next.Well, you are notalone.

For many home-owners, choosing apaint color is one ofthe biggest andmost controversialdecisions relating toa home purchase.Paint chips areintended to providea visual sample so ahomeowner orrenter can take asample of the colorwith them and seehow the color lookswithin their space

without taking theplunge by having topurchase a pint orcan of paint.

The issue inmany instances isthe paint chips aretoo small to give thepurchaser a trueprediction ofwhether or not thecolor will be a win-ner or flop.

NAVIGATINGTHE HOMEIMPROVEMENTSTORE AISLE

In nearly allhome improvementstores, the paintaisles are dividedby brand and inmany instancestype (as far as inte-rior versus exteriorpaints). Exterior

paints are specifi-cally formulated towithstand the ele-ments and formu-lated differentlythan paints intend-ed for interior use.

WHAT’S IN ANAME?

Once you haveselected the type ofpaint you are look-ing for, in order tohelp narrow downyour selection, thenext step is to selecta brand. Do yourresearch and readreviews.

One of the biggestdifferentiators isprice. There canoften be quite a dif-ference in price, anda higher price doesnot always mean

higher quality. Youcan often get superbquality as far ascoverage and dura-bility with a paintthat is sold at a lowprice point.

COLORIn many ways

color isn’t as muchof a factor as it usedto be. This is inlarge part becausewith an increase intechnology, manybrands as well ashome improvementstores can “match”color.

The matchedcolor can be createdfrom the smallest ofsamples, includingthe tiny dot oftenplaced on top ofpaint cans.

By Mary CarolGarrityTribune News Service

A favorite part ofmy job is helpingcustomers turntheir houses intohomes, truly uniquedwellings thatreflect their person-ality. So when Annarrived scouting forfurnishings andinspiration to puther stamp on thehistoric home sheand husband Wallyhad just bought, wewere excited tohelp.

I want to inviteyou into Ann andWally’s beautifullibrary because it isa great illustrationof an importantcredo: Make yourinterior design per-sonal. Here’s howthese homeownersdid just that, andthe results arestunning. Come onin ...

PERSONAL-IZATION TIP 1:

PAINT THEWALLS A COLORYOUR LOVE

Most of Ann’shome is painted abright and cheerywhite. But for herlibrary, she wantedto go big in thedrama department. So she paintedevery inch of thiscozy space, from thewalls to the trim, inBenjamin Moore’sdeep, dark, moodyLead Gray.

The paintersthought she wascrazy, she said, andkept asking, “Areyou sure you wanteverything paintedgray?”

But she has greatcolor sense, and lotsof confidence inconsiderable deco-rating skills, so shestuck to her guns.I’m so glad she did, because the wallsmake this roomfeel like a presentwrapped in beauti-ful paper.

Picking a paintcolor can be really,

really hard. A goodway to zero in onthe right hue foryour room is togather lots and lotsof photos of roomsyou love.

You’ll start to seea pattern in thewall color. Whenyou find a color youlike paint test spotsin different placesin the room thenwatch them as thelight changesthrough the day. Ifyou like what yousee, go for it!

PERSONAL-IZATION TIP 2:COLLECT ANINTERESTINGMIX OF FUR-NISHINGS

This wonderfulsofa and set of spoolchairs was one ofmy favorite group-ings this spring.Ann knew she

wanted colorful fur-niture in herlibrary to popagainst her graywalls. When shesaw this collection,it was love at firstsight.

The new uphol-stered pieces blend-ed perfectly withthe leather chairand accent tablesshe already owned.I really like howthis space is filledwith a wide assort-ment of furnish-ings, in a variety ofstyles and finishes. My favorite spaceslook like they haveevolved over time.

PERSONAL-IZATION TIP 3:WEAVE IN YOURTREASURES

When Ann andWally moved intotheir home, she hadboxes and boxes of

treasures she hadreceived from fami-ly members or col-lected through theyears. But she was-n’t sure how, and if,she wanted it usedin her daily decor.

Enter Zakk, oneof our associates atNell Hill’s, whoworks with cus-tomers on personal-izing their decor.Zakk offered a fresheye, killer designsense and somecheerleading to Annas she put her fami-ly’s stamp on theirhome.

“I probably wouldstill have a lot ofthis stuff in boxes ifit wasn’t for Zakk,”Ann laughs. Zakkhelped Ann turnher walls of book-shelves into anarresting showcase,a stage for some ofthe accents she

loves most.One of Zakk’s

tips: Work a fewpieces of your col-lections into yourdisplays. He discov-ered a box packedfull of Royal Daltonfigurines given toAnn by her grand-mother and dottedthem in here andthere.

What can youweave into your dis-plays to make yourhome more person-al? Mementos fromyour childhood?Vacation souvenirs?Family heirlooms? These specialtouches tell yourlife’s story andmake your hometruly unique.

PERSONAL-IZATION TIP 4:FINISH WITHDISTINCTIVEARTWORK

A room isn’t fin-ished until its wallsare filled with won-derful artwork. Art– whether it’spaintings, photos orinteresting objectslike old trays orplatters – pullseverything togetherand makes a spacetruly personal.

Ann and Wallyare lucky enough tohave a number offamily pieces, including originalart painted byWally’s late sister,to add to the art-work they have col-lected through theyears.

This wonderfulpainting, done byWally’s aunt, is ofWally, Ann andother family mem-bers, gatheredtogether for a wed-ding.

Even though we donot generally fertilizethese crops this timeof year, July is thetime to find out whatyour pecan, peach orapple trees andgrapevines reallyneed.

Tissue analysis isa reliable manage-ment tool used toindicate the fertilityneeds of pecan, fruittrees and grapevines.Pecans and fruittrees can be moni-tored by collectingleaf samples whilegrapevine monitoringrequires collection ofleaf petioles.

July is the monthfor both samplingtimes. Pecan andfruit tree leaf sam-ples are collectedaccording to factsheet HLA-6232 orthe instructionslocated athttp://okpecans.okstate.edu/news/pecan-leaf-samples-instruc-tions. Grapevinepetiole sampling pro-cedures can be foundathttp://www.grapes.okstate.edu/news/july-is-grape-petiole-sam-pling-time.

Results will onlybe as accurate as thesample collected so itis advised to followthe directions. Oncethe leaves are sam-pled, they should besubmitted to thePayne County exten-sion office. We willsubmit the sample tothe OSU lab for test-ing and then providespecific recommen-dations for you

plants. The cost ofthis service is twentydollars per sample.

Fertilizer recom-mendations will beprovided for the fol-lowing spring appli-cation. Frequentlygrowers find outthey are applyingunnecessary nutri-ents and can reducetheir costs of fertiliz-ing. The fee for aleaf sample can bean inexpensive toolto determine short-

ages or excessesbefore problemsdevelop.

Q: Dear Ed, Irecently attendedan event at a pri-vate home andthe host had avery sleek-look-ing toilet with-out a handle. Itwas a touchlesstype, and all youhad to do washold your handover the tank toflush. I want toinstall this exacttoilet in my mas-ter bathroom, but my husbandis unsure andwon’t budge

since he hasnever used thistype of toilet. Anyideas on how Ican educate himto be more opento my new toiletidea?

– Mary, Florida

A: Thinkingclean has become anew trend withbathroom productslike odor filteringtoilet seats andtouchless flushingtoilets. Many peo-ple don’t like to

touch toilet handlesand having a toiletwithout a handleeliminates theissue.

Now, eventhough this soundslike a good bath-room upgrade, I

can understandyour husband notwanting to investin a complete toiletreplacement justyet.

But, I do have anaffordable idea thatmay interest him.

For a lot lessmoney you can pur-chase a touchlesstoilet conversionkit. These newtouchless flushingkits can be fittedinside the tank tomost existing stan-

dard toilets.With actual

hands-on usage, there may now bebetter movementfrom your husbandtoward the brand-new toilet installa-tion.
