As we continue on in our series in James, we approach the end of chapter 1. This passage explicitly gets to the heart of the main thrust of the letter. Real faith is not of faith that merely hears and mentally agrees with what is written. It is one that activates and makes us into a ‘doer of the word’.

Discussion Questions1. This series is entitled ‘Real Faith’. When was the last time you questioned

the genuineness of your faith? What sort of things cause you to question it? Is it good for us to question it?

2. Has there ever been a time where you were confronted with God’s word and resisted it? What happened? Do you feel that you are generally quick to receive truth that makes you uncomfortable or do you tend to respond defensively?

3. Read James 1:22-25. What does it mean to be a ‘doer of the word’ and not a mere ‘hearer’? When you read the bible, do you generally approach it with the intent to obey what it says? How can we encourage one another to be better ‘doers of the word’?

4. James talks about bridling the tongue as evidence of an undefiled, worshipful response to God’s word. How are you when it comes to controlling your tongue? Are you truthful, even in the small things? Do you avoid gossip? Are you sarcastic toward others? Where have you acted in faith and where have you not in controlling your speech?

5. James also talks about caring for orphans and widows as pure religion. How do you feel about the most defenseless in society? Is there currently any space in your life at all, for the most weak and vulnerable and needy around us? What does that look like?

Sermon Review Discussion QuestionsThese questions are for after the sermon and can be used for Life Group discussion, one-to-one discipleship, or personal reflection and application.

1. How does real faith go beyond just mere thinking?

2. How is James using the term ‘righteousness’ a bit differently from other New Testament writers?

3. What does it mean to ‘receive with meekness the implanted word’?

4. What big idea of the entire book of James is found in our passage this morning?

5. How is God’s word like a mirror?

6. What three tests does James give us to help us see if our faith is real?

In-Sermon Focus QuestionsThese questions are designed to keep you engaged during the sermon.
