The fall semester has kicked off and it has been exciting to see the students, members, family’s, and guests coming in the Campus Recreation Center to take advantage of the facility along with the many programs we offer. We have recently adjusted our dependant policy to cater to families with children by allowing children access to the facility throughout the year! However, please remember for the safety and well being of your children, every dependant must be accompanied by an adult member at all times. In regards to the facility, here are our most recent updates: 1) We are in the middle of replacing each of the shower stems & handles in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms in an attempt to make things easier when turning on and off the showers. By doing so, this should lead to saving water as they will be equipped to shut off with ease and keep from leaking water. 2) In the near future we will also be replacing our stationary bikes in the fitness areas with newer versions that include TV attachments, similar to those on the ellipticals, along with a few new machines that we demoed this past spring. 3) Lastly, we have replaced the smith machine in the free weight area with a brand new version. If you have any suggestions on equipment that you would like to see in the CRCT, please feel free to provide me that information. Please check out the link for the Blazer Fun Run and training program (www.uab.edu/wellness) as Campus Recreation and UAB Employee Wellness are teaming up to bring the UAB community a fun event for the whole family! This is an opportunity to sign up for a 6 week training program with Campus Recreation for only $35, which includes your race fee, a running/walking trainer and nutrition assessment for the duration of the program. Our end goal is to get everyone off the couch and moving toward a more active lifestyle, so join us as we embark on this journey. News about YOUR Campus Recreation Center

OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2011www.uab.edu/campusreccenter

from your Interim DirectorGreetings!

The cooler temperatures of fall tend to make us want to hibernate indoors, watch football and pig out on tailgating junk food. Not to mention with the holiday season just around the corner, most of us will be gorging ourselves on Halloween candy, Thanksgiving stuffing and Christmas goodies! There is nothing wrong with indulging in a treat now and then, as long as you lead an active lifestyle. However, with so much going on in our everyday lives, it’s hard to find the time and motivation to stay active.

Here are some tips on how to maintain that active lifestyle throughout the fall festivities:

1) Get a workout buddy. Having someone to exercise with and to hold you accountable for your daily workout can sometimes be all the motivation you need! So grab a friend and join a Zumba class, then relax your muscles in the spa and sauna, or maybe even with a massage.

2) Find an activity that you truly enjoy. If dancing isn’t for you and you would rather enjoy the crisp, fall weather, then you can sign up for an Outdoor Pursuits adventure! Sports fanatic? Join an Intramural team or just stop by the Campus Recreation Center and join in on a pickup basketball game. Regardless of your personal preferences, the UAB Campus Recreation Center offers something for everyone!

3) Mark your calendar! By scheduling your workout as part of your daily “To-Do” you will feel a better sense of accomplishment when you get to mark it off of your list. If you need help finding the time, visit the Campus Recreation Center website and take a look at our Ufit schedule. With a plethora of classes to choose from, you are sure to find a class and time that works for you!

It’s important to remain active all year long so you can enjoy those seasonal guilty pleasures, guilt-free. So, treat yourself to an active way of life with the UAB Campus Recreation Center!

INTRAMURALSPORTSIntroducing Inner Tube Water Polo!

This month in RECetera, the Intramural Sport that we would like to highlight is Inner Tube Water Polo. How did it find its way to UAB? The Assistant Director of Intramural Sports at UAB, Charles Judkins, did his undergraduate studies at the University of Miami. While in school at the University of Miami, Charles was actively involved with their intramural program which happened to offer the sport of Inner Tube Water Polo. It was through his back to back to back Intramural Inner Tube Water Polo championships that Charles became very fond of the sport and has been waiting for the right opportunity to bring it to UAB.

It is our goal to try and bring you a rotation of new sports through the UAB Intramural Program every year and when Inner Tube Water Polo was voted on by the students last year as the new sport they wanted to see implemented, it was a no brainer. Intramural Inner Tube Water Polo at UAB was born!

How do I sign-up to play this awesome new sport? All you have to do is go to the website, imleagues.com and create a user profile to play intramurals at UAB. If you already have a user profile then you just need to sign into

your user profile and navigate into the UAB intramural Sports page. Once there, you will see Men’s, Women’s, and Co-Rec Intramural Water Polo League sign-ups which are currently open for registration.

The registration for the Intramural Water Polo leagues will be open until October 11. The captain’s meeting for this specific sport will be held on October 11th at 7pm in the Campus Recreation Center room 150. You can either create a team, join a team, or sign-up as a free agent to be placed on a team. The cost to play intramural team sports is an individual fee of $12 for the 2011-2012 school year. Once you have paid your $12 fee on imleagues.com you may play as many intramural sports as you would like at UAB for the entire school year!

Recognitions!Congratulations to our UAB Intramural President’s Cup Winners from the 2010-2011 school year!

“Only swimmers can benefit from the pool,” is a common misconception among many of our patrons at the UAB Campus Rec Center and it needs to change. Many of the same exercises that are done in the gym can also be done in the pool with some modification. With a little creativity; a kickboard and a noodle; you can turn the pool into “a wet gym.”

Exercising in the pool can offer a number of additional benefits including: buoyancy and a two-fold caloric burn. The two-fold caloric burn is probably the most over looked benefit.

When you enter the water, the first things you notice are a drop in body temperature and an increased breathing rate. The pool’s 84 degree water temperature has an immediate impact on metabolic rate, because water pulls heat away from the body and doesn’t replace it. Your body senses the change in temperature as you enter the water and right away it starts to burn calories to maintain a 98 degree body temperature; then as you start to exercise, your body begins to burn even more calories in order to provide movement.

Exercising in the pool is like “burning both ends of the caloric candle.” Remember the Rec Center is a toolbox with a lot different instruments that can help you build good habits and maintain a healthy lifestyle, so be sure to utilize them all!

Tips for entering the pool:

1) Take a warm shower.

2) Enter the water to hips and scoop water on to face, arms and chest.

3) Relax by breathing deeply and slowly.

4) Entering water is both a physical and mental adjustment, so gradually get wet.

AQUATICSNon-Swimmers Can Also Benefit from the Pool!

OUTDOORPURSUITSThe latest in Outdoor Pursuits!

Over this last week or so the Campus Recreation Center’s rock wall staff embarked on the in-depth process of resetting the entire wall and deep cleaning each of the holds. Friday night was a sight to see as much of the staff spent their night hanging from ropes and repelling down the rock wall with drills in hand, stripping the wall until every single hold was gone.

All day Saturday and Sunday the rock wall staff honed their skills as route setters as they were taught and critiqued by a professional route setter. The new routes have never looked better and each has been set for people of all shapes, sizes and abilities. Regardless of your experience you will love what the new routes have to offer you.

Come join us at the wall!

Featured trip: NEED A PLAN FOR FALL BREAK?! WE HAVE GOT YOU COVERED! Coming up on Oct. 13 – 16 is the trip to Mount Rogers, VA. This backpacking trip takes place over fall break and is really a must do. Whether you are an avid hiker or just want to experience the great outdoors, this trip is for you.

Mount Rogers, located along the Appalachian Trail, is the highest mountain in Virginia, so the views should be great. You can plan on hiking through thick spruce-fir forests and crossing beautiful grassy meadows. Along the way there is a good chance we will get the treat of seeing one of the several herds of wild highland ponies that call Mount Rogers home. The ponies are beautiful and very friendly. Don’t miss this opportunity to see what Outdoor Pursuits can do for you!

For more information stop by the Outdoor Pursuit’s office at the back of the Campus Recreation Center, or call us at 205-996-4913.

Sports drinks were designed to Replenish, Rehydrate and Fuel athletes participating in High Intensity and Endurance sports especially in hot and humid environments. In recent, the popularity of sports drinks has doubled in all populations as a preferred beverage options inside and outside the gym. The Sports drink industry has heavily marketed these products, such that people believe, “If you consume sports drinks during activity your performance will improve, as well as be able to exercise longer” just like the famous athletes promoting it. What the industry fails to explain is that for normal everyday exerciser sports drinks are a big waste of money and can be counterproductive to your health goals. The use of sport drinks in a weight loss exercise program for most overweight/obese adults and children can be counterproductive resulting in more calories consumed than expelled during exercise. Overtime this can lead to a slow progression of weight gain or lack of weight loss, all of which lead to increasing frustration and/or desertion of one’s health goals. In most situations water is always going to be healthier for you than sports drink, particularly if weight loss is a health goal, because water unlike sports drinks contains zero calories and rehydrates the body quicker.

So when are sports drinks appropriate for everyday exerciser and/or individuals trying to lose weight? Hydration and proper electrolyte balance during exercise is important. Water and electrolytes during exercise is primarily lost through sweating, which keeps the body from overheating. Hydration with water will always be the best choice for exercises lasting 60 minutes or less, yet once exercise exceeds 60 minutes, replenishment of body electrolytes (Sodium & Potassium) is required. Minimal amounts of concentrated sports drinks can easily replenish your electrolyte imbalance, but excessive consumption results in higher intakes of carbohydrates and simple sugars. All of which are unnecessary for individuals trying to lose weight. Below are appropriate alternative sports drinks options: 1.) Propel 2.) Powerade Zero 3.) Diluted Gatorade 2 (1/2 bottle G2 and ½ Water)

Come in and explore your way around the weight room for a new workout routine. Recently, we have complimented our weight room with new cable machine accessories, kettle bells and medicine ball storage racks. In addition, we have added 20/25lb dumbbells to our group exercise classes, which will add that extra burn for those who like to be pushed to the limits.

Sept 18th, Campus Recreation hosted a Spinning® Certification class provided by Mad Dog Athletics, which had six people in attendance. We typically host 3-4 group exercise/personal training workshops a year. These one day and/or weekend certifications are quick, fun and valuable as we are always looking for quality group exercise instructors and people who can offer insight to the latest trends in the fitness world. We are hosting a Group Exercise Certification through AFAA on December 3rd for Primary Group Exercise certification and December 4th for Kickboxing certification. If you are interested, you can obtain more information and register at www.afaa.com.

This fall we have added several new Ufit classes to our schedule that are gaining interest among our members as well as several new instructors to our group ex staff. Welcome: James Drake, Jenna Kuzma, Elisabeth Chramer, Kelly Leuch, Sally Shurbaji, Michael Milazzo!!

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) with Jenna is a 25 minute class designed to elevate your heart rate while pushing your muscles to complete fatigue! They are offered on Mondays and

Wednesdays at 5-5:25pm. Additionally, our new instructor James is having an extraordinary time with his lunch time class called Total Body Fitness on Thursdays at 12:15!! Witness it for yourself and give us your feedback!! We continue to offer four free spin classes per month, so be sure to check out our monthly schedule so you don’t miss out! We also sell single and 1/3 month spin passes as well, which can be purchased at the front desk of the Campus Recreation Center. Zumba has hit the weekend; join us Saturdays at 10am! There are currently seven weekend classes now offered at the Campus Recreation Center including: Zumba, Aqua Fit, Spin and more! Our aqua fit programming has expanded to include four aqua fit classes a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

As the holiday season approaches, a great idea to relieve stress would be to book some training sessions with our extraordinary personal trainers or a massage with our massage therapist, Atheena Walters. You can now book your massage session online at www.uab.edu/campusreccenter or contact [email protected]. These sessions would be a perfect start to the New Year for you or your friends and family in 2012! To obtain a personal trainer, call 996-4886 or [email protected].

Saturday, Nov. 12th – UAB Wellness along with Campus Recreation will be hosting the Blazer Fun Run, a 2 mile walk/run event for UAB faculty/staff/alumni/families. We have a six week training program that you can register for as well, that includes the cost of the race. To register or more info, go to http://www.hrm.uab.edu/main/wellness/index.html.
