A long, eight-year, confer-ence championship win-ning streak has defined The University of Texas’ women’s swimming and diving program. That streak ended in Febru-ary 2007 when the Texas A&M University women’s swimming and diving team took them down in a close, one point victory.

Records were set as soph-omore Christine Marshall earned Big 12 Swimmer of the Meet and newcomer freshman Alia Atkinson defeated a three-time con-ference champion. Their outstanding performances,

along with the clutch efforts of many of the other swimmers, led the A&M women to a historic victory. The Aggies were behind 861–833 going into the final two events.

Texas A&M coach and Big 12 Coach of the Meet said, “It’s taken us eight long years to get to this point, but boy does it sure feel good. I can’t say enough about the toughness and resiliency of this team. Winning this meet was one of their main goals from day one and they went out and made it happen.”

Matt Griffith, a Head Lifeguard for the De-partment of Recreation-al Sports, received the campus-wide Student Employee of the Year Award, as well as a second award given to out-standing student employees from the Southern region.

Matt is known for his incredible work ethic and outstanding leadership skills. He constantly searches for and recom-mends ways to improve Rec facilities to better provide for members. Ev-ery member of the Aquatics staff has rated Matt as “the best head guard to work with.” His abil-ity to relate with other employees while making work actually sound fun and appealing make him a strong asset to the Rec Sports team. Matt is known as an employee that is willing to step up any time a problem or concern presents itself; he is able to resolve most uncomfortable situations easily and without complaint.

Matt has gained the respect of both his peers and his supervisors. Angie Mattiza, Rec Sports Aquatics Director, said, “I feel reassured when I leave the facility knowing that Matt is in charge and that he will hold the staff accountable for their job responsibilities.”

Matt is known for his unmatched work ethic, making him a reliable, mature and trustworthy team player. Lynne Barber, Rec Sports Aquatic Coordinator, stated, “Matt is the type of employ-ee that goes above and beyond what is expected of him, and he encourages his peers and those he supervises to do the same. He leaves very big shoes to be filled and will be missed very much.”

Kate is an outstanding example of the dedicated student staff that works in the Department of Recreational Sports. Kate was selected to receive the Department of Recreational Sports Student Staff Schol-arship because of her attitude, commitment, respect and leadership

skills. Kate states, “The Rec is overflowing with diversity; diversity of programs and facilities, diversity of patrons, and diversity of staff.” She strongly believes that diversity strengthens leadership, as it creates a multidimensional and challenging environment, expands one’s perspective, and helps one to realize the virtues of individuality.

The good, the bad, the stand-outs: they all flocked to the Rec Center for their chance to become the 2007 Rec Idol. Judged by three Rec Sports em-

ployees, Rick Kahlich (Golf Pro and Shop Manager), Logan Holt (Class of 2009 Rec Center Supervisor) and Jerrod Jack-son (Intramural Coordinator), the contestants got an expe-rience not entirely unlike the one contestants on pop culture phenomenon “American Idol” go through, just on a much smaller scale.

Those choosing to participate in the competi-tion were asked to audition for the three judges by singing a piece of music about a minute long with no accompaniment. Forty auditioned, but only twenty-five made it to the second round where contestants were asked to sing a full song, with or without accompaniment or CD track. Of these twenty-five contestants, seven made the finals, which were held during the Rec Center’s Student Appreciation Banquet. The contestants making it to the final round were asked to sing full songs with accompaniment or CD track.

The seven finalists advancing to the third and final round had diverse musical interests. Whitney Williams and Ruth Ashurst

showcased their coun-try voices, while Mal-lory McFar-land, Krys-tal Aragon, Lauren Mullins and Ryan Clinkscales belted out pop and hip-hop songs. Only one contestant, Courtney Ste-fan, took it back further than any of her competition, sing-ing a more contemporary version of an Etta James classic.

In the end, it was Mallory McFarland’s outstanding rendition of a Christina Aguilera ballad that took home the big prize: a semester’s worth of books. Mallory had chosen to sing with no accompa-niment in the previous round, so her choice for the final left a lot of opportunity for her to show her abilities when singing with instru-ments backing her. Mallory’s song choice was one of the most important aspects of her final round victory.

Judge Jerrod Jackson said of Mallory’s perfor-mance, “She picked a good song that show-cased her voice and that hit the notes she

needed to hit…and the crowd loved her!”

Rec Idol provided exciting entertainment for the Student Appreciation Banquet and a great stage for a few Texas A&M students to shine. The contest was a success and will likely continue for many years to come.

A graduate of The University of Texas, Lance Lowy has shown the dedication that Texas A&M University administrators, faculty, staff, professors, instructors and other personnel are known for. Mr. Lowy has worked in the Department of Health and Kinesiology since hand-ball was added as a course in 1978, and he has acted as the head of Club Handball Program since he graduated with his Master’s Degree in Health and Kinesiology from Texas A&M.

Mr. Lowy’s perspectives have changed over the years, but his determination has remained the same. Although he originally planned on being a baseball coach, graduate school brought a new ambition: teaching and coaching handball.

“As you go through life wingin’ it, your goals change as your career changes,” said Lowy of his decision to devote his career to Texas A&M Handball. His devotion allowed the Club Handball program to defeat the University of Texas Handball Club Team 28 out of 29 times,

allowing A&M to hold the Handball National Champion title for 13 years.

Mr. Lowy’s choice to be a part of the original handball program at A&M was bold, but is something he looks upon with pride, and those who have learned from him look upon with thanks. Not only has he had the opportunity to teach some of the brightest and most talented students in the nation, but he has also had the opportunity to learn from them. When asked about the best comment a student could make about him as an instructor, coach and friend, Mr. Lowy said that one particular instance stood out in his mind. One of his previous students said that being a part of the Club Handball program was like being “part of a family.”

It was that family attitude that contributed to the pride Mr. Lowy felt when another of his talented students, Andy Bailey, helped him run the first National Collegiate Handball Tournament at Texas A&M in 1997 when the Rec Center opened its doors. He and Andy took on the project, inviting 300–400 people to participate. The tournament was a success, and Mr. Lowy says he felt pride for the job his “standout” student had done.

Lance Lowy is retiring from work at Texas A&M, and he will be leaving a legacy of commitment when he goes. He says he plans to travel a lot upon retirement, currently having made plans for trips to both Europe and South America.

The Department of Recreational Sports would like to wish Mr. Lowy all the best in his future endeavors and thank him for his service to the University.
