    DIFFICULTYLEVEL

This project is pretty simple. If you

dont have a paper cup, a plastic one

will work, too. He looks pretty cute just

sitting on the shelf with that curious

little look on his face, but if you want

to make your HopBot move, purchase

the Recycled Robot Book & Kitand see

    instructions on page 103.

    HERES HOW

Boxbot is so incredible, its hard to imagine

that hes made up of old cardboard boxes.

Dont worry if your materials dont match the

ones pictured. Just be sure to think about

the scalethe BODY box should be bigger

than the HEAD box so your Boxbot doesnt

topple over. If your box has writing

on it, you can paint him silver orbright orange or pink.

If you dont have jewels for

    his controls, try using

    bottle caps, buttons,

    or beads. The only

goal is to have a blast

    making Boxbot!

Find a medium box forthe HEAD. Cut out acircle in the middle tocreate a round neck hole.

Cut the bottom end off of two cups and put gluearound the edges for the EYES. Places the EYESon the robot HEAD.

Seal both sides of the big box (the BODY) and stand it on itsshort end. Poke a starter hole where youd like the arms to bewith the tip of a sharp pencil, then widen the hole by wigglingthe scissors up and down and side to side.

Insert a chopstick throughthe middle of a cup andput glue around the rim.Place two of these on theside to make EARS.

To make the NECK, find thecenter of the bodys top bymaking an X with yourruler from one corner to theother. Apply glue around therim of a cup and attach it tothe center of the X.

Unscrew the rod from apush-along toy. Push the rodthrough the arm holes of theBODY to make SHOULDERS.

Position LEG over center offoot and glue together.

To make LEGS, peel open two mini boxes of cereal. Glue theflaps and put the box back together inside out with the plainbrown side exposed. Leave one end open and apply glue tothe closed end.

Apply glue to the open flaps and attach to the BODY.Repeat steps 810 for the other LEG and FOOT, let dry.

For the ARMS, measure and mark a spot 1 1/2 from one end of a paper towel tube. Poke ahole with a pushpin and then widen the hole soyou can attach the ARM to each SHOULDER.

    Cut a scrap of cardboard,about 3 x 5 ,and marklines at 1/2 , 1 1/2 , 3 1/2 , 4 1/2 .

Fold at each line to form abox and apply mounting tape.

Place HEAD onto BODY, settingthe neck hole over the NECK.

Attach to the inside of a smallopen box to create the CONTROLPANEL. Repeat step 2 with lastcup and glue into box.

Apply mounting tape to all the jewels, cut excess tape, and attach jewels to the CONTROL PANEL. Applymounting tape to the CONTROL PANEL and attach it to

the chest area of the BODY.

Heres anotherversion of Boxbot, using smallerboxes and differentshapes. A takeout

container makesa great head andsmall scraps ofcardboard look justlike hands! If you findpieces of cardboardthat youd like to cutinto certain shapes, make sure you aska parent for help.
