All across the Unites States, more than half a million “Red Crossers” assist those affected by

hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, floods and fires. They provide education in First Aid,

CPR/AED and Emergency Preparedness, they donate blood and help people prepare for,

respond to and recover from disasters.

The American Red Cross Greater New York Region is a volunteer-driven organization

governed, supported, and to a large degree staffed by volunteers. You support our mission to

help communities prepare for, prevent, and respond to natural and man-made disasters.

We are committed to creating meaningful Volunteer Opportunities that lead to Volunteer

Careers, which promote leadership and accountability.

This volunteer guide was developed to help you choose a volunteer opportunity that will make

the most of your time, talent, and skills while helping to manage your expectations regarding

what it’s like to volunteer with the American Red Cross. It will help you make an informed deci-

sion before you apply to become a volunteer.

The first section of this guide tells you about our history, mission, guiding principles, volunteer

philosophy, and values. The second section contains our Volunteer Opportunity listings with a

link to our volunteer application. It is important to read both sections carefully as they can help

determine the area you’d like to volunteer in.

Committed, qualified, and skilled volunteers are the heart of the Red Cross. It would be

impossible to deliver services, 24/7, without a full complement of volunteers in key roles.

Join Us!

Welcome!

Before You Begin

The Orientation to our organization, provided on the following pages, is a brief and easy-to

-read overview of our history, mission and services. Read it thoroughly before

applying for a volunteer opportunity.

You must be over the age of 18 to apply for a volunteer opportunity listed here. If you are

in high school (NYC), please read more about our High School Clubs or, if you are in

College or University (NYC), our Campus Clubs may be for you.

We offer volunteer positions based on our current needs. There may be a limited number

of openings for some positions.

A few volunteer opportunities offer weekend and after hours scheduling. Many, such as all

administrative positions, are available only during regular business hours, Monday through

Friday.

While we welcome and encourage all medical professionals to apply, our region does

not offer any volunteer opportunities allow you to practice as a phlebotomist or pharma-

cist.

Our region cannot fulfill hours needed for court-ordered community service or short-term

community service required by academic institutions.

Excluding internships, short term volunteer opportunities (2 to 3 months) are rarely

available as training requirements make them unsuitable for visitors to the New York

Region or Greenwich, CT.

The information you provide in your application is confidential and will only be used to

evaluate your suitability for volunteering in the position you select.

The American Red Cross does not deploy volunteers to international disaster relief efforts.

If accepted as a volunteer you will be asked to:

Embrace The Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and

Red Crescent Movement (p. 9)

Align your work with our Mission, Vision and Values (p. 10 and 11)

Agree to the policies and procedures of the American Red Cross

Initiate a Background Check

“...most of those who brought their

own good will to the task lacked

the necessary knowledge and

experience...would it not be

possible...to form relief societies

for the purpose of having care

given…by devoted and

thoroughly qualified

volunteers?”

Jean Henri Dunant 1828-1910 The Red Cross began in 1859, when Henri Dunant, a young

Swiss businessman, came upon the scene of a bloody battle

in Solferino, Italy, between the armies of imperial Austria and

the Franco-Sardinian alliance.

Some 40,000 men lay dying on the battlefield. Dunant

organized local people to bind the soldiers' wounds and to

feed and comfort them.

On his return, he wrote A Memory of Solferino which called

for the creation of national relief societies to assist those

wounded in war. This pointed the way to the future Geneva

Conventions.

In October 1863, the International Red Cross Movement

was created in Geneva, Switzerland. The Red Cross emblem

was adopted at this first International Conference as a sym-

bol of neutrality.

Today, the global Red Cross and Red Crescent network is composed of the Geneva-based

International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and

Red Crescent Societies (International Federation), as well as national societies in more than 180

countries, including the American Red Cross.

Clarissa (Clara) Harlowe Barton 1821-1912 Clara Barton, known as the “Angel of the

Battlefield” for her work during the American

Civil War, dominates the early history of the

American Red Cross, which was modeled

after the International Red Cross. She did not

originate the Red Cross idea, but she was

the first person to establish a lasting Red

Cross Society in America.

After risking her life to bring supplies and

care to soldiers on the battlefield during the

American Civil War, she successfully

organized the American Association of the

Red Cross in Washington, D.C., on May 21,

1881.

Created to serve America in peace and in

war, during times of disaster and national

calamity, Barton's organization took its service beyond that of the International Red Cross Movement

by adding disaster relief to battlefield assistance. By the force of her personal example, she opened

paths to the new field of volunteer service in America.

“You must never so much

think as whether you like it

or not, whether it is

bearable or not;

you must never think of

anything except the need

and how to meet it.”

Fundamental Principles of the International Red

Cross and Red Crescent Movement

Humanity The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (the Movement), born of a

desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield;

endeavors, in its international and national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human

suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure

respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation

and lasting peace amongst all people.

Impartiality The Movement makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or

political opinions. It endeavors to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by

their needs, and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress.

Neutrality In order to continue to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in

hostilities or engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious

or ideological nature.

Independence The Movement is independent. The national societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian

services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must

always maintain their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance

with the principles of the Movement.

Voluntary Service It is a voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.

Unity There can be only one Red Cross or Red Crescent society in any one country. It must be

open to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory.

Universality The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, in which all societies have

equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.

As part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent

Movement, the American Red Cross follows, and every volunteer

and employee embraces, these seven fundamental principles.

American Red Cross—Mission and Vision

Mission The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of

emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

Vision The American Red Cross, through its strong network of volunteers, donors and partners, is

always there in times of need. We aspire to turn compassion into action so that…

...all people affected by disaster across the country and around the world receive care,

shelter and hope;

...our communities are ready and prepared for disasters;

...everyone in our country has access to safe, lifesaving blood and blood products;

...all members of our armed services and their families find support and comfort whenever

needed; and

...in an emergency, there are always trained individuals nearby, ready to use their Red

Cross skills to save lives.

American Red Cross—Values Compassionate: We are dedicated to improving the lives of those we serve and to treating

each other with care and respect.

Collaborative: We work together as One Red Cross family, in partnership with other or-

ganizations, and always embrace diversity and inclusiveness.

Creative: We seek new ideas, are open to change and always look for better ways to serve

those in need.

Credible: We act with integrity, are transparent guardians of the public trust and honor our

promises.

Committed: We hold ourselves accountable for defining and meeting clear objectives, de-

livering on our mission and carefully stewarding our donor funds.

We reaffirm our commitment to the Fundamental Principles of

the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and

add to these principles five values that are essential to our

continued success in meeting our mission.

The Definition of a Red Cross Volunteer A Red Cross volunteer is an individual who fully embraces the Fundamental Principles of the

International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and who, beyond the responsibilities of

paid employment, freely assists the American Red Cross in the accomplishment of its mission

Core Services of the American Red Cross

Disaster Services

Each year, the American Red Cross responds immediately to nearly 70,000 disasters,

including single-family and apartment home fires (the majority of disaster responses), and

other natural and human-caused disasters. Red Cross disaster relief focuses on

meeting people’s urgent disaster-caused needs. When a disaster threatens or strikes,

the Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and mental health services, and bulk

distribution of needed items to meet the basic human needs of those affected.

Services to the Armed Forces

The Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) program ensures that service members,

veterans and their families have worldwide, around-the-clock access to timely and

reliable humanitarian services. The Red Cross also reaches out to more than 1.2 million

members of the National Guard/Reserves and their families who reside in nearly every

community in America. SAF services are delivered through the Red Cross chapter network

in the United States and on military installations around the world.

Health and Safety Services

American Red Cross Health and Safety Services is the premier provider of education,

training and products that enable people to prevent, prepare for and respond to

disasters and other life-threatening emergencies through programs and services that

include: First Aid/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/ Automated External Defibrillation

(AED), Aquatics, such as basic swim lessons, Lifeguarding and Water Safety and

Caregiving, including Babysitter’s Training and Preparedness training.

Blood Services

Blood Services conducts research and provides collection, testing, processing and

distribution of blood and blood products for the American people. Each year, the Red

Cross collects approximately 6.5 million units of blood, from roughly 4 million volunteer

blood donors.

International Services

International Services works with a global network of Red Cross, Red Crescent and

equivalent societies to restore hope and dignity to the world’s most vulnerable

people through relief and development projects and its specialized International Disaster

Response Unit. Red Cross tracing services and Red Cross messages help families

separated by war or disaster to locate each other, send communication and learn each

other’s fate. In addition, the Red Cross has the unique mandate to educate the American

public about the guiding principles of International Humanitarian Law.

Page 14: Red Cross Volunteer Guide

14

At one point the American Red Cross operated as interdependent, individual chapters.

Through a re-structuring process known as One Red Cross, chapters combined into re-

gions and regions combined into divisions. We are within Division 10.

Our region is composed of the American Red Cross New York City serving the five

boroughs of New York City, the American Red Cross Metro New York North serving

Greenwich, CT, West Point and the counties of Westchester, Sullivan, Putnam, Rockland,

and Orange, and the American Red Cross on Long Island, serving Nassau and Suffolk

counties.

The Role of Volunteer Resources The Volunteer Resources and Youth Services Department (VRD) is responsible for the

recruitment, on-boarding, retention and recognition of all volunteers. It works to enhance

the volunteer experience while encouraging the development of volunteer and employee

relationships. It provides the tools necessary for Volunteer Managers throughout our region

to succeed in developing meaningful volunteer opportunities that lead to volunteer careers.

VRD also administers volunteer programs such as High School and Campus Clubs, and

“Ready When the Time Comes (RWTC)” corporate partnerships.

Regional VRD offices are located in midtown Manhattan, Mineola, Long Island,

Westchester county and Greenwich, CT.. All are welcome to volunteer in any location

within our region.

Our Recruitment Philosophy Volunteers are viewed as a valuable resource and shall be given meaningful assignments,

treated as equal co-workers, given effective supervision, experience full involvement and

participation, and be recognized for their work.

We believe that volunteers and the organization they serve must meet each other’s

expectations and, when recruiting volunteers, it is more important to place the right

person in the right job than to simply attract volunteers.

Our Commitment to Diversity American Red Cross National headquarters and our chapter are committed to diversity and

inclusiveness. Our employees, volunteers, governors, customers, blood, bone marrow and

tissue donors, financial contributors, clients, suppliers, and vendors should be

representative of the diversity of the people residing in each local community the Red Cross

serves. We are committed to people diversity, program diversity and service diversity.

Volunteer and Employee Roles and Relationships Volunteers may be involved in all programs and activities of the organization, and serve at

all levels of skill and decision making. Volunteers and employees are partners and have

equal and complementary roles to play and both respect and understand each other’s

abilities and needs.

16

Our Region’s Operating Values Integrity:

We communicate openly and honestly.

We make only agreements1 that we are willing to and intend to keep.

When we can’t keep an agreement we communicate to those who need to know

at the first opportunity.

We use our mistakes to create a safe learning environment. When we make a

mistake we admit it, take action to correct it and work together to prevent it from

recurring. When we see a mistake from others, we communicate it respectfully.

Respect

We treat others the way we would like to be treated.

We listen and communicate clearly, calmly, and professionally without interruptions.

We listen with the intent to understand and acknowledge other’s points of view

without being judgmental (use active listening skills of paraphrasing and

asking clarifying questions)

When we have an issue with a person, we speak to them directly to resolve it.

Customer Focus

We respond to all customers2 with integrity and respect. The customer is the reason

for our work.

We ask the customer clarifying questions on what they need and focus on meeting

and exceeding those needs.

We express empathy3 in all customer interactions with the intent to increase their

trust and loyalty.

We continuously improve processes to anticipate, understand, and respond promptly

to all customer needs (expectations and requests) based on experience.

These values provide you with a framework on how to

operate positively and successfully as

one Red Cross and members of one regional team.

1Agreement: An activity that is specific, measurable, and time sensitive.

2Customer: Anyone (within Red Cross or external to Red Cross) with whom we interact or provide with information or services.

3Empathy: Acknowledgement of another’s feelings

Page 17: Red Cross Volunteer Guide

17

Helping You Succeed The Volunteer Resources department uses a set of Core Capabilities to guide volunteers

toward succeeding in their volunteer careers. They are based on the American Red Cross

Values: Compassion, Collaboration, Creativity, Credibility and Commitment (pg. 11) and on

our Region’s Operating Values (pg. 16).

Strategic Alignment

To effectively and ethically carry out the Red Cross mission, volunteers align their work

activities with the strategic goals and objectives of the volunteer opportunities they chose

while adapting well in changing environments.

Staff Integration

Volunteers will do their best to integrate themselves into the structure of the Red Cross by

promoting accountability, teamwork, and leadership.

Relationship Management

Volunteers build strong and meaningful relationships to help ethically carry out the Red

Cross mission, drive positive action, and achieve desired results.

Volunteers work in partnership with their

Volunteer Managers, supported and mentored

during every phase of their volunteer careers.

volunteering is greater?

Volunteer Careers in Disaster Relief require flexibility and commitment.

Are you ready to commit to possible long hours?

Can you work easily with people of varying temperaments and personalities?

We serve a diverse population:

Do you know multiple languages? (A plus, but not required.)

We need leaders.
