The way people see Red Bank is about to change dramatically when theNew Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art (NJMoCA) opens its large-scaleexhibition here on August 19 of works by Romanian artist, Dumitru Gorzo.Curated by art historian and critic Marek Bartelik, HEADS is a series ofmore than fifty 4’ X 8’ bold, vibrant paintings commissioned exclusivelyfor this public art exhibition. The works will be installed on the exteriorwalls of buildings throughout downtown Red Bank, from retail shops tocultural venues and plenty of places in between.

NJMoCA, an innovative new museum-without-walls, was founded in 2010 as thefirst museum in New Jersey dedicated exclusively to contemporary art and culture. Its nomadic programming model is designed to take art outside of traditional museum walls and bring it into places where serendipitous, personal encounters can happen with people in their everyday lives. The museum presents site-specific art exhibitions, events, andperformances in a range of spaces across the state¬—from town centers, billboards and empty storefronts, to abandoned warehouses and corporate structures. The focus is to present emerging artists fromaround the world who are producing significant, thought-provoking new perspectives in artistic expression.Dumitru Gorzo is an artist whose work represents the mission of NJMoCA on a grand scale.

Titled HEADS, the exhibit turns Red Bank into an open museum portrait gallery. The bold, thought-provoking imagery of Gorzo is intended to capture attention, draw the viewer in, and, literally, be the talk ofthe town, stimulating conversation and invigorating the cultural climate of the community.

Born in Romania, Dumitru Gorzo now lives and works inBucharest and New York. In 2006, he was the subject of amajor, one-person exhibition at the Romanian National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest, which devoted anentire floor to his works. SLAG Gallery in New York represents Gorzo’s work.

Taking note of caricatures about New Jersey’s image advanced by reality shows and jokes, NJMoCA founder,Robin Parness Lipson says, “NJMoCA’s objective, exemplifiedby our world-class exhibition of Dumitru Gorzo presented inan unexpected outdoor context, intends to turn that mockingimage of New Jersey on its, well, HEAD.”

Earlier this year, Denmark was ranked #1in a world map of happiness.* You can geta taste of the reasons why with a trip overto The Danish Café in The Galleria, the

newest international addition to theculture-and-cuisine scene that is

attracting visitors to Red Bankfrom all over the world.

It wasn’t long ago thatDanish citizen Lone Kofod

was a successful innkeeperof The Small Hotel (Det Lille

Hotel) that she owned and ran onBornholm, an island south of Sweden. Shesold her place last year and came lookingfor a location to open a business in theUnited States. She wanted somewhereclose by the sea with “good energy” whereshe could have a place that was “a little bitlike my hotel”—meaning small in scale andlarge on hospitality. The Danish Café iseverything she was looking for.

The combination of contemporary Danishdesign and the interior detailing of the historic Eisner Building that houses theGalleria Shops on Bridge Avenue has created an inviting and intimate space toenjoy the European open-faced sandwichesand “real danishes” on the menu alongwith lagkage (layer cake), imported pastries, cheeses, fruit custards and otherDanish delights.

The Café is open from 8am until 9pm seven days a week for a light repast and agenerous portion of happiness.

Summer fun and playtime are here...and so are the injuries and illnesses that make it “the trauma season“ for kids. Every year, millions of children in the United States will require emergency medical care in the summer months. For those living in MonmouthCounty, Riverview Medical Center has a specialized Pediatric Care

Center—an affiliate of K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital that opened two years ago as part of the Meridian PediatricNetwork—that provides a completely new experience and high level of care for pediatric patients and their families.

At the Pediatric Care Center at Riverview, every child is seen and treated in a timely fashion by a dedicated team of pediatric care clinicians. Board certified pediatricians, certified pediatric nurses, emergency care trained nurse practitioners, and emergency medicine physicians are in-house, on-call 24-hours, working together as a team to provide the best care for patients.

“There are distinct patterns to summer accidents, and many can be easily prevented,” says Howard Rubinstein, M.D.,medical director of the Emergency Department and Pediatric Care Center at Riverview. According to Dr. Rubinstein, themost pediatric summer visits are from common ailments and injuries such as dehydration due to extreme heat, asthmaand allergies, insect bites, and broken bones.

Dr. Rubinstein tends not only to the young patients who are rushed through the doors of his emergency department, but, also, to their shocked parents. A brief lapse in supervision is often a critical factor in kids' visits to the ER. From the heat,to pools, to bike riding, parents need to be on alert.

“If I had to narrow down my advice to parents into one top safety tip forthe summer it would revolve around bike riding,” says Dr. Rubinstein.“Bike riding without a helmet is an accident waiting to happen. Wearinga cast on an arm or leg can be uncomfortable in the summer, but youcannot put a cast on a child’s brain. Brain injury is the most serious ofinjuries and children must wear helmets everytime they’re on their bikes—no matter what.”

Trauma is preventable, but keeping childrenout of the emergency room takes thought andpreparation. In summer, kids are everywhereand parents need to be, too, so that a trip tothe emergency room can be prevented.

On March 28, 1912, Fair Haven was incorporated

as a borough, making it separate and free-

standing from Shrewsbury Township by an Act

of the New Jersey Legislature. The historic occasion is the

cause for a heartfelt year-long 2012 Fair Haven Centennial

Celebration with a calendar of events that bring the

community together to make memories. Saturday, June 16

marked the midpoint with the blessings of sunny skies and

balmy temperatures for a fine old-fashioned parade

marching from Sickles School on Willow Street over to

Fireman’s Field on Ridge Road for a fun-filled town

picnic with everyone invited. There’s a July Regatta, the

Tour De Fair Haven, a Centennial Night at the Fireman’s

Fair in August, a garden party, golf tournament, lecture

series...the celebrating continues into December culminating with a

holiday open house. For the complete Centennial Celebration schedule,

updates, and related information, go to FairHavenNJ.org.

Next year Fair Haven Hardware Inc. will celebrate its sixtieth anniversary in theShooman family, an occasion HarveyShooman plans to honor with a hugh celebration. In 1953, when his father,Eli, purchased the hardware businessthat Harvey now runs on the corner of River Road and Fair Haven Road, hundreds of thousands ofindependent hardware stores weremainstays of retail in towns and citiesacross America. According to Harvey fewerthan 30,000 remain today. It’s a statistic that speaksvolumes about Fair Haven Hardware Inc.

Harvey came to work full time in the store along side hisfather in 1973, after graduating from Emery RiddleAeronautical University (ERAU) in Daytona Beach,Florida with a commercial pilot’s license. First, he wentto work for Northwest Orient Airlines based out ofMinnesota. When he changed course and decided tooin the family business, he brought his training for anaeronautical science degree with him, including technicalknow-how and the mastery and management of a complex, multifaceted environment.

“You need to know what you’re doing and stay on top of thingsto stay ahead,“ he says. “It means keeping up with new technologies and reinventing the business all the time.” To thecustomer, that knowledge may be transparent, but it is there, underlying the quality of the shopping experience at FairHaven Hardware and it has sustained the business for decades.Paint formulas, the chemistry of garden fertilizers, environmentallegislations, the latest ruling on light bulbs…the hidden expertisebehind the store’s vast inventory is a lasting benefit that extendsbeyond a purchase.

But Fair Haven Hardware Inc. is more thanjust a full service hardware store. For theShoomans, it’s always been a hardwarestore with heart. “Our customer base hasalways been an extension of our family,”says Harvey, “and there are countless littleways we get to show it all the time.” Waitingon customers can mean the woman whocame in with her fingers swollen by an illness and trusted Harvey to cut off her wedding ring because it was cutting off hercirculation. Or the candy basket on the front

counter that brings in forty to fifty kids a day for a piece on theway home from Sickles School down the street. Or it can comefrom the excitement in Harvey’s voice when he talks about thenew product his employees found, a powder that dries out cellphones when they fall in the water. “It’s perfect for summer,” hesays. “My customers are going to love it!”

Harvey Shooman knows that sixty years in business is something to celebrate, but it’s only worth it if you have something to celebrate a day at a time.

The largest firemen’s fair in New Jersey might take place in FairHaven, but the memories are as big as the world. Thanks to theFair Haven Fire Department, countless numbers of lucky peoplehave grown up carrying ferris-wheel-and-cotton-candy dreamswith them, long after summers have gone.

For more than one hundred years, (the fair has runevery year since 1906, except for a few years during the two World Wars), the firehouse grounds have been transformed into a twinklingwonderland…Thrilling rides like the Zipper, theRainbow, the Wipeout, and, of course, the giantFerris Wheel…Mini-tours around the block on oneof Fair Haven's first-line fire trucks…Cotton candy, ice cream, hamburgers, hotdogs, scrumptious home-made vittles, succulent seafood dishes (records show anastounding total of 100 dozen soft shell crabs and 60 pounds of scallops a night!!! were served under thedinner tent)… And gallons and gallons of Manhattan-style chowders.

It’s a famously all-volunteer effort and the department’sbiggest fundraiser. All hands are welcome and you don’t have to be anything but willing to help. Sign-up on-line at fhfd.org

STUDY WITH PERFORMERS, DESIGNERS AND DIRECTORS WHO WORK IN PROFESSIONAL THEATER!

This July, Two River Theater and visionary modern-dance choreographer Larry Keigwin invite everyone with a love of dance to join Boléro Red Bank, an original performance that will be created for our community and set to the rousing core of Maurice Ravel’s Boléro. If you are between the ages of 2 and 102, please join us—no prior dance experience is required and people of all abilities are encouraged to participate.

Here’s how it works: on July 9, Larry Keigwin will meet with interested community members for improv and theater games. Participants must be available for evening rehearsals over the subsequent two weeks. The final dance piece will then be performed on Two River’s stage on July 20 and 21 as part of a program that will also include three pieces from KEIGWIN+COMPANY’s professional repertoire. Please visit www.trtc.org to learn more.

LITTLE SILVERMaking the business

community one big happyfamily has long been a

mission of the LittleSilver Business and

Professional Association(LSBPA) but the June

wedding of two of its members takes the

meaning to a wholelevel. Ali Major,

pharmacist at LittleSilver Family

Pharmacy, and JayCordaro, manager at

Valley National Bank, metwhile working in the friendly atmosphere that LSBPA fosters downtown.

It was the time of year of the LSBPA food drive forLunch Break. Jay’s curiosity—and, admittedly,

competitive nature—brought him into Little SilverFamily Pharmacy to talk to owner Matt Parisi aboutthe store’s successful efforts in the campaign, butit was soon Ali Major who captured his attention.

Matt’s introduction was followed by an on-the-spotlunch invitation from Jay

that lead, less than a yearlater, to a marriage

proposal. Ali and Jayhoneymooned in St Lucia

and were warmly welcomed home by family, friends, and

the LSBPA.

Salt Creek Grille, Rumson, one of Monmouth County’smost popular waterfront restaurants, has a new menuwith fresh lighter fare, an emphasis on local farms andproducts, and bold flavors unique to this 14-year-oldlandmark. The menu continues to center around the

restaurant’s trademark natural, authentic Mesquite wood firedgrille and award-winning wine list, and is now in place at bothNew Jersey locations - Rumson and Princeton.

“We are very proud of our scratch kitchen approach which we feel lends perfectly to our ability to adjust to the changing palate of our guests,” said East Coast Operating Partner, Steve Bidgood. "Our 'fresh, reinvented' direction is lighter, flavorful and uses local, farm fresh ingredients and local products. It combines a mix of flavors unique to our menu while staying true tothe original grille concept.”

The new reinvented interpretations intentionally utilize a variety of cooking methods and foods that are healthier for both guestsand the environment. For example, the sauces now rely less on cream and butter and more on a time-consuming, yet healthierreduction process. “Super foods” such as kale and whole grains like brown rice are now featured on the menu. The beef is all-natural and sourced from Creek Stone Farms and the chicken, which is organic and raised without antibiotics, is from Bellsand Evans. Both of these sources adhere to sustainable farming practices.

The new menu reflects the best of contemporary casual and traditional cuisine at affordable prices combiningnew specialties with classic Grillefavorites. The menu also boasts an extensive wine list and an array ofpalate-pleasing seafood, chops, creativesalads, classic side dishes and delectablehousemade desserts. Several Salt CreekGrille signature dishes remain, such asthe Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Shrimp andGrille's signature double-cut pork chopthat Zagat’s has called “the best on the planet,” and the made-to-orderchocolate ganache soufflé.

Salt Creek Grille also features a HappyHour, specials throughout the week and aprivate dining room with spectacularwaterfront views.

Victor Kuo spent the better part of 12 years opening up new Walmart stores in Bangkok, Hong Kong, and China. Then, in January 2011, he opened Temple Gourmet Chinese in Red Bank, a welcoming, elegant-but-relaxed restaurant serving Asian fusion, Szechuan-based cuisine in amenu that features traditional, authentic Chinese dishes and innovative,made-to-order delicacies.

What’s a corporate project manager know about Satay Chicken or Kung Pao Scallops, you might ask?

Plenty, it turns out.

Victor’s parents are long-time restaurateurs. From 1988 to about 1995, they owned the luxurious Peking Pavilion on Oakland Street in Red Bank (in the former OaklandStreet School building that now houses the Red Bank Charter School), and before thata restaurant in Richmond, Virgina, where Victor, a Chicago native, grew up. In 1985,the family moved to Holmdel where, three years later, he would graduate from HolmdelHigh School. He attended Colgate University, and received his MBA from ThunderbirdSchool of Global Management.

“Growing up in the industry, I’ve done pretty much everything you can in a restaurant,” says Victor, whose youthful looks belie his 41 years. “Everything frompeeling shrimp to washing dishes to bartending, cooking, and serving.”

When fire gutted his parents’ Peking Pavilion restaurant in Manalapan in 2004 (runconcurrently with the one in Red Bank and extant today), Victor left his Walmart jobin Shanghi to help rebuild. The restaurant reopened, but with Victor’s decision tolaunch his own restaurant, instead of staying at Peking Pavilion, as initially planned.

Victor’s yearlong search for the perfect location took him everywhere from Hazlet toOcean Grove, landing him in Red Bank. “I wanted to have a restaurant that wasserving premium food, focusing on quality, and create a relaxed, cool and trendyatmosphere for people to come in and enjoy,” he explains. He brought with him asexecutive chef Johnny Ho who is of Malaysian-Chinese descent and worked forVictor’s parents at the former Peking Pavilion on Oakland Street. Being “no expert

at interior design,” Victor hired the noted New York interiordesign firm, Alvarez-Brock, to create the atmosphere for theambience he wanted.

It is Victor’s dictum that Temple be reasonably priced. “I’ve seenlarge tables of customers here look at their bill and look at eachother, and say, ‘Wow, that’s not bad!’” he says, adding that hepromotes the sharing of plates among friends at the table so thateverybody gets a little taste of everything—an approach that hesays is well received.

“Everything has worked out,” says Victor, a modest assessmentgiven the explosive popularity of his restaurant. On busy week-end evenings, Temple has been forced to turn away 30 or 40potential customers due to lack of space. “The only thing I coulddo was get bigger,” says the MBA graduate. Fortunately, anopportunity arose to take over half the space of the businessdirectly next door, expanding his original 1,600 SF space by1,500 SF. A 20-foot wine bar—at present Temple is BYO—is inthe new addition, as well as more seating, both inside and out, that almost doubles the capacity. Alvarez-Brock is, again, thedesign firm for the project.

While Victor is the Temple boss, herecalls with fondness a youth spentsitting down with a bucket, peeling shrimp—something he’snot averse to doing today.“Whatever it takes,” he says witha smile.

D id you know that a country can have an astrological birth chart? Like the chart for any newborn, the one for a nation is based on the date, time and place of its birth, so the chart for the United States of America

is calculated for July 4, 1776 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the time of thesigning of the Declaration of Independence.

From an astrological perspective, “America the Beautiful” is more than asong title. Four key planets—the Sun (which describes core personality

characteristics), Mercury, Venus and Jupiter—are in the nurturing, caring, patriotic, love-of-hearth-and-home sign of Cancer. They are all

placed in the part of the chart that represents partnership and committed, collaborative relationship with others. The heart of thechart—the Moon—is in humanitarian, tolerant, independence-loving Aquarius, and these qualities are reinforced by the South Node of the chart, the indicator of a karmic legacy, which is in the sign of Aquarius as well. America’s Ascendant, the symbol that describes how our country interacts with the rest of the world, is Sagittarius, the non-judgmental, freedom-loving, all-inclusive, “never met a person I didn’t like” sign of the

expansive adventurer.

With Saturn, the planet that reminds us our responsibilities, stronglyplaced in its own “home” in the mission-driven, highest segment of the

chart, our nation is called to share the wealth of its riches and resources with others. The United States can best deliver on that mission, not only through the collective union of the diverse energies of its individual states, but in collaboration with other nations as well, because Saturn is in Libra, the sign that reinforces the strongrelationships themes of the chart.

America has a chart that is called to claim freedom for itself and bring it to others—to be inclusive, not restrictive; peaceful, and nurturing, not aggressive. Infused with aspirit of adventure, it has great love of the “motherland” (Cancer is the sign associatedwith “motherhood and apple pie”) and is strong in the defense of its security and safety. And, one last thing—the North Node, which describes the soulful purpose of achart, is in Sun-ruled, attention-attracting Leo, the sign of the generous leader, and isplaced in the part of the chart that represents the power to heal and reform.

As we make our choices this November, not only for President, but for Congress and one-third of the Senate, let’s do all we can to elect the very best people to bring outthe highest potential of this beautiful country and guide it wisely along the next stretch of its historical journey.

The Sibly USANatal Chart

This Horoscope for

the USA was first

proposed by Ebenezer

Sibly (1751-1799), a

British astrologer, physician

and herbalist, who was alive at

the time of the signing of

the Declaration of Independence.

It uses July 4, 1776 5:10pm in

Philadelphia, PA as the date, time

and place for the signing of the

Declaration by some or all parties.

The astrological natal chart is the

symbolic map of the sky as it was at

the moment of an individual’s or

entity’s birth, with that “native”

placed at the center of that Universe.

It shows the positions of the sun,

moon, planets and other significant

celestial markers as modified

and enriched by the qualities of

astrological signs and houses.

With a presidential and congressional elections on the

horizon, it’s timely to take an astrological glimpse into the

birth chart of the USA and see why ours is a nation born to

take the lead—by example and action—in the healing

and transformation of the world of which it is a part.
