CHUCK AURAND, PASTOR Checking in…with Pastor Chuck Wow! In the past couple of weeks, I have been in some kind of transition. I have moved from a warm desert climate up to a mountain paradise. I have left my family to pack up our house in Phoenix to journey to join a new kind of family in the community of Red Lodge. And it has been wonderful! I am blest to have so many great people to help me as I begin my new role as pastor in our Community Church. I look forward to learning more about each of our members and friends. I have already heard wonderful stories about your lives before moving to Red Lodge and how they have blossomed here at the basecamp to the Beartooth Mountains. I have heard stories about the early days of our community and the spirit which brought this wide diversity of souls together. I will soon meet our ministry partners in the Montana-Northern Wyoming Conference where I have already been invited to share in developing new ministry experiences for us all. As it is with me, your new pastor, so it is with each person who visits us at Red Lodge Community Church. A new person doesn’t know everyone’s names. A newcomer may feel a little awkward or out of place. But when the stories begin to flow, then we learn that we are all different and the same. “Oh, you like astronomy. Oh, you play chess. Oh, you like to hike.” And soon the newcomer’s solo “I” turns into “We” as invitations to share in new ministry experiences are offered. As the days slowly get longer and a faint promise of a Spring yet months away begins to germinate, may we take the risk and be the invitational (evangelical) people that we are all called to be. May we take the risk and invite someone to our church. This will mean going out into the community, making contact with people, and building relationships with them. It means inviting them to share in our new experience. And if they say, “Well I’ve never been to a UCC church before.” You can say, “Oh you will love it. After all, it’s YOUR Community Church.” RED LODGE COMMUNITY CHURCH, UCC HALOM HALOM HALOM HALOM Lynette Coleman, Editor CHUCK AURAND, PASTOR

An Ash Wednesday Prayer

Dear righteous Lord, we enter the holy season of Lent confessing our many sins that separate us from you. We’re sincerely sorry for offending you repeatedly through our thoughts, our words and our actions — and often through our inactions, too. Forgive us, Lord, and show us your tender mercy. Restore and strengthen us to become your faithful and faith-filled servants. During our Lenten journey, remind us to show mercy to other people, just as you’ve shown mercy to us. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Message from Search Committee

February greetings from your search committee! This will be our final report and we are all very excited to be retiring our positions under a joyful conclusion. With the New Year our church has gained an amazing new pastor, Rev. Charles Aurand III, or Pastor Chuck, as he likes to be called. On January 3rd Chuck came to Red Lodge and gave his call sermon. After the service there was a congregational meeting and we unanimously voted to call Chuck as our pastor! He accepted and officially began his journey with RLCC on January 15th. Pastor Chuck has over 20 years of experience leading congregations throughout the West and Midwest and is joining us after serving as the Director of Faith formation and technology in the Phoenix church where his wife is the pastor. Pastor Chuck’s wife, Rev. Patti Aurand, will be joining him in several months as she concludes her position in Phoenix. We are so very grateful to have found Pastor Chuck and we know that his many gifts and talents will be a wonderful blessing for our church. Please join us in welcoming Chuck and Patti Aurand to our church family! All our best from The Search Committee.

Love Notes

When it comes to relationships, kid quotes are priceless: • “I love you so much that even God is amazed!” • “Dear Mom, I love when you spend time with you.” (A mom can only dream!) • “I’m sorry that I’ve been chasing you outside. If you start to like me, I will not chase you.” • Responding to a note that asked, “Do you like me?” a child wrote, “I don’t know. I don’t know myself yet. Plus I’m under a lot of stress at home so, I can’t tell. P.S. You don’t know yourself until you’re 18.”

MAKING SENSE OF THE CROSS: A LENTEN STUDY

Beginning on Sunday, February 14th at 1:00 p.m. and continuing through Sunday March 20th, Pastor Churck will lead this video and group discussion by the former head of the Luther Seminary’s Preaching department. In this progressive study titled Making Sense of the Cross by David J. Lose, we will look at the various ways that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus have been interpreted. Spoiler Alert: the most common interpretation is certainly not the most ancient, and may not be the most inspiring for you. Studies will run until 2:30pm. Although not required, you may wish to purchase a paperback or Kindle copy of Making Sense of the Cross by David J. Lose, December 1, 2011, Scott Tunseth editor, through Augsburg Press, Amazon, or call church office. Cost of book is in the range of $13.00.
