SPORTING RESULTS 27

th October

The Year 12 PDHPE class had the opportunity to participate in a flying trapeze workshop at the Sydney Trapeze School. They were shown a variety of basic circus skills and then were challenged to perform a variety of skills on the high trapeze. The class used psychological strategies learnt in class to reduce the anxiety they experienced from being placed in a stressful situation. These strategies allowed them to perform a knee hang, somersault dismount, with some students even managing to be ‘caught’ by one of the aerialists.

SCULPTURES BY THE SEA Year 10 artists had a splendid afternoon absorbed by sun, sea, surf, sand, salt spray and sculptures. We walked from Bondi Icebergs to Tamarama to view the amazing range of sculptures perched on the edge or rock cliffs and nestled between ledges along the coast. A very inspiring journey for the students to see and experience in the flesh the contemporary forms being created on our doorstep.

SUCCESS IN PUBLIC SPEAKING!

Last Friday night, after a hectic week of school activities, six students represented Reddam House in the Eastern Suburbs Public Speaking Competition. In three divisions, our students were pitted against the best orators from Scots, Kambala, Sceggs, Cranbrook, Waverley College and Kincoppal. Our junior representatives were Eric Zykov and Gabi Karney; the intermediate speakers were Evan Ding and Eloise Hirshman and our senior competitors were George Malesevic and Zizi Averill. Students were required to present a prepared speech as well as an impromptu speech with three minutes preparation time. Subjects like "Me or we" and "Mind the Gap" proved extremely challenging but our students were not in the least bit daunted. Eloise's impromptu speech was so entertaining that the guest of honour who presented the awards gave her a special mention. All six speakers are to be commended for their thoughtful, insightful and well delivered speeches. A huge congratulations to Zizi Averill who was awarded second place in the senior division and to Gabi Karney who won the junior division against very tough competition.

The inaugural Reddam House Idol and Battle for the Bands Competition was held on Thursday evening 25

th October. 16 soloists took part in the ‘Idol’ section and 6 bands

engaged in the ‘Battle’. In an extremely competitive but friendly environment a large audience were treated to over 2 hours of excellent music making. The visiting adjudi-cator, Mr. Ben Castelli, was very impressed with the standard of our students and their level of engagement with the audience. A unique feature of this evening was the opportunity for the audience to contribute directly to the outcome, by voting for their preferred soloist and band. On this occasion the audience was able to help alter the adjudicators decision in relation to the ‘Idol’ section with Jarrad Sapsford snatching victory from Brennan Clody by 1 mark. In a more clear-cut decision the Band winner was the duo of Ben Herman and Cameron Lawrence (The Sombrero Brothers) per-forming a very exciting version of Tommy Emmanuel’s ‘Tequila Slammer’ – dueling banjo style! Congratulations to all of the performers, but especially to our Primary entries: Jazmyn Bailey, Sasha Gross, Matteo Schisano and Rubi Carr, who bravely took on the high school competitors.

YEAR 8

Year 8 Digital Media Unity3 Competition Unity3 empowers games developers and novices alike to create immersive gaming environments for delivery on computers, handheld devices and mobile phones. Whether you love “Slender”, “Pong”, “Donkey Kong” or “First Person Shooter” games, there is something for everyone in this robust application. The enthusiasm generated from the Unity3 seminar last term has forced a change to the Digital Media curriculum for Term 4. To meet the excitement, the course has adapted and included a Unity3 module to allow students to explore making their own game. The Year 8 Digital Media group are diligently setting their minds to games development and a prize for the best work from each of the two groups will be awarded. Watch this space for the announcement of our winners in Week 7. Andrea Huxham
